Samsung Intercept for Sprint now totally official: July 11 for $100
Well, that didn't take long, did it? Just earlier today we were talking about how the Intercept was starting to make its way into bits and pieces of Sprint's system, but now, the announcement's here and it's the real deal. Most notably, the Android-powered landscape QWERTY slider will go to market for under $100 (by a penny, anyway) on contract after rebate, making it a value-oriented alternative for the monsters like the EVO 4G and Epic 4G that Sprint is pushing on the high end. T-Mobile and HTC to launch first 21Mbps HSPA+ smartphone in September
T-Mobile might be busy expanding its we-swear-it's-like-4G HSPA+ network to all sorts of metro areas in the US, but those theoretical 21Mbps speeds have been limited to those wielding WebConnect Rocket data cards, not any actual phones. just:play 1.2 improves timeline, adds FCP XML import
ToolsOnAir has released just:play 1.2, a new version of company's broadcast server software. Meant primarily for TV stations, the program lets users schedule output from a variety of different video sources. This can include studio and live feeds, and real-time effects such as logos and tickers.

YouTube Mobile adds HTML5 for Android, iPhone users
YouTube today unveiled a completely revamped version of YouTube Mobile designed with Android and iOS devices in mind. The new page uses HTML5 when present to play video without having to use Flash. Much of the interface has now been reworked for touchscreen devices and incorporates the features that have arrived since the mobile page was last updated, such as like/unlike flags, playlists and suggested searches.

Demiforce has released an update to its acclaimed Trism puzzle game for the iPhone and iPod touch, adding native iPad support and fixing some iOS 4 related problems. Nintendo's Miyamoto says Miis could make the jump to the 3DS
Nintendo already dropped a hint that Miis could be heading to the 3DS by including some Mii-like characters in the Pilotwings demo at E3 last month, and Shigeru Miyamoto himself has now offered some further confirmation that Nintendo is at least looking at the possibility. HTC Desire with North American 3G graces FCC with its presence
Rumors of a June 8 launch of Telus' HTC Triumph -- a rebranded version of the Desire, seemingly -- came and went without a trace, but now, we've got another reason to think that the model's launch might be just around the corner. iDisk jetzt auch für das iPad

UBS holds course on AAPL following NPD numbers
Analyst Maynard Um of UBS is holding onto a current buy rating for Apple stock after analyzing monthly data from NPD. US-only, the data shows Mac sales for May up 8 percent month-over-month, and up 35 percent year-over-year via about 361,000 units. Data covering April and May together shows growth of 37 percent, over UBS's 29 percent expectation in Mac growth rate for the quarter. Overall June quarter results are expected to sit between 2.9 and 3.5 million units, with a precise UBS forecast of 3.35 million.

NTT DoCoMo looks to sell handheld game manufacturers on 3G
Japanese telecom operator NTT DoCoMo is apparently in talks with heretofore unnamed manufacturers to get its 3G modules embedded in handheld game consoles. "We are discussing this with various players," said company president Ryuji Yamada. The Wall Street Journal makes an educated guess that Nintendo might be one of the "players" (or "ballers," if you will), which sounds pretty good to us: we know that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS handheld is still being tweaked, and including 3G would be a pretty big deal. iPhone network settings take 2. Will it fix the proximity sensor bug?
Filed under: iPhoneWe were surprised and gratified at how many of our readers were able to improve iPhone 4 reception (or at least there were more bars) by resetting network settings.
Now it appears people are using the same technique to fix the sometimes buggy proximity sensor that is supposed to turn the screen light off when the phone is near your head for making a call.
A chorus of users are reporting the issue, saying the screen does not turn off and they wind up muting calls and even hanging up on people inadvertently.

Blame for Kin's death spreads, casts doubt on Win Phone 7
More Microsoft employees have weighed in on the death of the Kin project and are now suggesting that the problems may spill over into Windows Phone 7. Updated Verizon Network Extender gets FCC blessing
Sprint got FCC approval for an EV-DO-capable version of its Airave femtocell back in April -- and now, it's Verizon's turn. As you might expect, this is the same Samsung-sourced unit that we saw back in January at CES, which was expected to launch in the second quarter. Samsung already backing out of US e-reader market?
Samsung's yet-to-ship e-readers may have been postponed indefinitely due to intense competition, according to company statements. A spokesperson explained that Samsung is reconsidering its strategy in the light of "current market dynamics." It stopped short of quitting the market entirely and planned news soon, but also didn't give an update on if or when readers like the E6 would arrive, if at all.

iPad finds early favor with enterprise customers
The iPad is starting to find escalating corporate adoption, reports say. Among the interested parties is Wells Fargo, which is said to have initially bought 15 iPads, approving them internally in a space of just two weeks, as compared to two years for the iPhone. The company's senior VP, Megan Minich, now says that the financial firm has "a bunch" more on order, only waiting for Apple's delivery. iPad stock remains tight, but is believed to be improving overall.

AT&T: 3G speed crash a Alcatel-Lucent bug, being fixed
AT&T today explained the sudden upload speed drops that had plagued iPhone 4s and other devices on its network. The carrier claimed that the issue was sparked by a "software defect" in Alcatel-Lucent's 3G base station hardware that stalled uploads for any device that supports HSUPA. As we'd suspected, AT&T isn't intentionally limiting upload speeds on iPhone 4s in some markets where things suddenly got slow over the weekend. Or that's the company's claim, anyhow -- and seeing how they're actually calling out a supplier in the process, we tend to buy it. Apple has begun accepting applications for the beta of a new MobileMe Calendar interface. Among the changes being implemented is a revised layout, reminiscent of the Calendar app on the iPad. The web app should now load faster, and a new list view is designed to make it easier to track events. Apple identifies 400 victims in App Store fraud case
Only a small percentage of iTunes accounts were exposed in the recent fraud incident involving e-book apps submitted by Thuat Nguyen, Apple now claims. The company tells Fox's Clayton Morris that approximately 400 people were affected. iPhone 4 helps Softbank blow past other Japanese carriers
Softbank today beat out fellow Japanese carriers again today by adding the most new subscribers in the country. It credited the launch of the iPhone 4 for helping it add 229,500 new subscribers in June. While larger, NTT DoCoMo only added 164,600 subscribers, and the second-place KDDI Au network added just 61,300 new customers.

HTC may ship 24 million phones this year
HTC is expecting a huge spike in phone shipments that could make it a much tougher competitor in the second half of the year, part suppliers claimed on Wednesday. Estimates have it shipping 60 to 70 percent more phones than it did in the first half of 2010, and as many as 24 million handsets for the whole year. Samsung pushes out BX2350 and BX2335 1080p monitors
We've always been fairly fond of Samsung's Touch of Color design scheme, so we're glad to see it's still firmly in place on the company's new "eco-friendly" LED displays. The outfit's debuting its 50 and 30 series panels today, with the BX2350 and BX2335 both offering a 2ms response time, 1080p resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio and a rather unique new feature called Magic Return. Put simply, this allows users working with two monitors to have their desktop automatically moved to a powered-on screen if one screen happens to shut down -- Sammy doesn't mention if both monitors have to be in this new series, but we suspect those details (along with price and availability dates) will seep out soon.

Apple bestätigt Manipulation von App-Store-Verkäufen
Apple hat am Dienstag gegenüber ZDNet bestätigt, dass ein iPhone-App-Entwickler versucht hat, die Verkäufe der von ihm angebotenen Anwendungen zu manipulieren. Der Entwickler Thuat Nguyen und seine Apps wurden wegen Verstößen gegen die Lizenzvereinbarung aus dem App Store verbannt. Apple wirft ihm unter anderem betrügerische Verkäufe vor.

Wie GoRumors entdeckt hat, erhielt Amazon ein Patent auf einen E-Book-Reader, der über zwei Displays verfügt. Samsung kann Umsatz und Gewinn steigern
Wie Samsung bekanntgegeben hat, rechnet man für das zweite Quartal mit einer deutlichen Steigerung sowohl beim Umsatz als auch beim Gewinn. So konnte man im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum den Umsatz um ungefähr 14 Prozent von umgerechnet rund 21,1 Milliarden Euro auf ungefähr 24 Milliarden Euro steigern. Bluetooth 4.0 Spezifikation steht, erste Geräte soll es im vierten Quartal geben
Ist ja nicht so, dass die heutigen Geräte schon alle Bluetooth 3.0 nützen würden, vielleicht mal abgesehen von Samsungs Wave fällt uns auf Anhieb eigentlich nichts ein, obwohl das Protokoll ja bereits im April 2009 rauskam. Egal, jetzt bringt die Bluetooth SIG Bluetooth 4.0 und eines der Hauptfeatures ist der geringe Energiebedarf, der auch den Betrieb in Geräten erlaubt, die nur eine Knopfzelle als Batterie haben. Die Reichweite soll auf über 100 Meter steigen, mittels Frequency Hopping sollen außerdem Störungen mit anderen Geräten minimiert werden. Auf dem Unplugfest Anfang Oktober in Barcelona können Hersteller und Entwickler mehr zu Bluetooth 4.0 und seiner Implementation erfahren.

Noch eine MobileMe-Neuheit: Apple lädt alle Kunden zum Testen der neuen Kalender-Anwendung ein. Das Design der Web-Applikation ähnelt der Terminverwaltung des iPad. Die “offizielle” Geocaching-App (7,99 Euro) von Groundspeak bekam ein Update auf Version 4.0 verpasst. Die neue Version kommt mit komplett überarbeiteter Benutzeroberfläche, zudem kann man sich zu den einzelnen Caches nun Notizen anlegen, optional Google Maps als Kartenmaterial verwenden, Fotos zu Logs hinzufügen und Trackables loggen. HTC meldet Gewinnsprung von 33 Prozent im zweiten Quartal
HTC hat im zweiten Quartal 2010 seinen Nettogewinn nach Steuern um 33 Prozent auf 8,6 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (rund 211 Millionen Euro) erhöht. Die erste Beta von Firefox 4 kann ab sofort runtergeladen werden (unter dem Quelle-Link, für Windows, Linux und OS X). Änderungen und neue Funktionen gibt's zu viele, um sie hier aufzuzählen. Dafür bitte auf den unterstehenden Changelog-Link klicken. Der Look wurde generalüberholt, es gibt einen neuen Add-On-Manager und Support für WebM. Mozilla veröffentlicht Firefox 4.0 Beta 1
Nachdem letzte Woche schon eine frühe Beta-Version von Firefox 4 auf Mozillas FTP-Server auftauchte, hat die Stiftung jetzt eine erste offizielle Beta-Version der nächsten Browser-Generation veröffentlicht. Diese soll “zum täglichen Browsen” bereits stabil genug sein.

It's been less than a month since Acer rolled out its Aspire One D260 netbook at Computex, but it looks like the company already has a followup (of sorts) lined up in the form of the Aspire One D255. Apple bringt eine Kalender-Beta für MobileMe an den Start. Die Web-Applikation wurde optisch an das uns bereits vom iPad bekannte Kalenderdesign angepasst. Endlich können gemeinsam genutzte Kalender von allen beteiligten Anwendern online bearbeitet werden, zudem lassen sich jetzt Einladungen mit Bestätigungslink an beliebige Empfänger versenden.
Einladungen für den Beta-Test lassen sich über das MobileMe Webinterface anfordern.

Erste Beta von Firefox 4.0 nun erschienen
Die Mozilla Foundation hat nach rund einer Woche Vorbereitungszeit nun die erste Beta des kommenden Firefox 4.0 veröffentlicht. Mit der kommenden Version wird unter anderem die Benutzeroberfläche überarbeitet und natürlich auch die allgemeine Geschwindigkeit erhöht sowie die Unterstützung von HTML5 weiter ausgebaut. Apple fährt iPad-Produktion hoch - Verkaufsstart in 9 weiteren Ländern inkl. Österreich diesen Monat
Apple will im Monat Juli angeblich mehr als zwei Millionen iPads verkaufen. Den Verkaufsstart in neun weiteren Ländern diesen Monat vor Augen, wurde die Produktion deutlich angekurbelt. Die 3G-Version des iPad macht dabei anscheinend rund 60 Prozent der Gesamtstückzahl aus.
Wann genau der iPad-Verkauf in Österreich, Belgien, Hong Kong, Irland, Luxemburg, Mexiko, den Niederlanden, Neuseeland und Singapur startet, wurde noch nicht offiziell kommuniziert. Wahrscheinlich ist ein Termin in der letzten Juli-Woche, wir gehen davon aus, dass Apple das genaue Datum spätestens nächste Woche bekannt gibt.

MobileMe: iDisk-App jetzt iPad-kompatibel
Mithilfe der kostenlosen iDisk-App können MobileMe-Nutzer komfortabel von unterwegs auf die auf ihrer iDisk gespeicherten Daten zugreifen, diese anzeigen und auch weitergeben.

Walt Disney Studios has launched Disney Movies, a new iPad app that provides access to a wide range of Disney titles. The video-enabled app allows users to preview recent movie trailers, or purchase DVDs and Blu-ray discs through supported online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and the Disney Store. 'App farming' update: Apple says only 400 accounts compromised

iOS App Store more likely to have paid, higher-price apps
Apple's App Store is not only attracting more paid apps than Android but higher priced ones as well, Distimo found today. The iPad and iPhone stores have about 73 to 80 percent of paid apps, but Google's store is controlled by free apps at 57 percent. iOS apps also have the liberty of commanding a higher average price, at $4.01 for iPhone apps across the entire store versus $3.29 in the Android Market.

Apple drops iPhone 4 return fee amid reception complaints
Apple has decided to drop its 10 percent restocking fee for customers dissatisfied with the new iPhone 4. The device has achieved extremely brisk sales in the first few weeks of availability, however many customers have complained of poor reception, dropped calls, or a complete loss of signal when the phone is held in a certain way.

Microsoft Kin's death pinned on exec's "jealous" infighting
More details have emerged today of the circumstances that led to the premature death of the Kin that suggest it was endemic to the project. Project Pink was originally led by famed Xbox leader and now departed J Allard but was effectively hijacked by the Windows Mobile team's lead, senior VP Andy Lees. He was "jealous" of the resources he saw being drawn away, according to Engadget sources, and not only took control but forced a change to a Windows CE foundation that conserved resources but doomed the project.

Synium has launched an update to its personal finance software, iFinance 3.2. The application tracks income and expenses, categorizing data to show spending trends. iPhone 4 antenna woes rumored caused by lack of coating
A tentative rumor largely gone unnoticed has raised the possibility that the iPhone 4's reception problems may have been caused by production issues. At least this and one other report claims that Apple support representatives were told there was an issue with a coating meant to prevent accidentally bridging the antenna but which wasn't present on all units. Apple couldn't offer a repair in either case, but one caller was told that their existing phones could be repaired or replaced once Apple had an official solution.

Mac OS X Radeon HD 5000, GeForce GTX 480 drivers leak out
A new firmware discovery in the build of Mac OS X 10.6.4 for the new Mac mini, as well as a set of leaked NVIDIA drivers, has suggested that Macs will have Radeon HD 5000 and GeForce 400 graphics in the near future. The ATI-oriented code doesn't identify any chipsets by name but does at least appear to run an aftermarket Radeon HD 5870 on a basic level through some extra work. Others trying to use a Radeon HD 5770, and Mobility Radeon HD chipsets, aren't having the same success.

Review: BlackBerry Pearl 3G
The Pearl has always occupied an unusual place in the BlackBerry line, if not the whole smartphone world: it's a smartphone for those who hate smartphones and the according price tags. With the Pearl 3G, though, RIM has blurred the line even further by packing 3G, GPS, Wi-Fi and even a high-resolution display into a phone no larger than a free-on-contract candybar. It's very promising, but we'll see in our BlackBerry Pearl 3G review if that amounts to a serious threat.

Leaker insists Jobs e-mails are accurate, gives clues
BGR today denied claims by Apple that an alleged e-mail conversation with Steve Jobs on antenna issues was faked. The site now says it checked the messages headers first hand and verified that the replies attributed to Jobs came from Apple servers and its 17.*.*.* IP address block. While it would be impossible to verify that the Apple CEO sent the e-mail himself, it would reportedly be difficult to hide that someone at the company sent the messages.

Although the device is one of the best smartphones Apple has ever released, it has one major problem: if users hold the device in the wrong way, they will lose their signal with the 3G network. Flash for Android hacked into iPad
Well-known iOS jailbreaker Comex has proven Flash can run on the iPad through Frash. The unofficial mod converts Flash 10 for Android through a translation layer that lets a jailbroken iPad use Adobe's plugin through Safari. From a hands-on video (below), it not only appears to run smoothly but includes audio and keeps working properly even after resizing the view.

Lenovo: Apple is wasting its presence in China
Apple's hesitance to fully commit to China is a big help to Lenovo, the latter's chairman Liu Chuanzhi said on Monday. He accused Apple's Steve Jobs of being fickle and willfully ignoring the mainland Chinese market in terms of reaching out to customers. The American company has strong demand for Macs and iPhones, but with just two Chinese retail stores, one iPhone carrier and a small number of third-party dealers, its much smaller footprint gives China-native Lenovo free rein.

Nokia has quietly bolstered its phone strategy today by recruiting a key developer from RIM. The BlackBerry creator's Europe and Middle East managing director, Charmaine Eggberry, is leaving to join Nokia as its global senior VP of Go-To-Market Operations. Apple pulls host of book apps following App Store fraud
A purge of books has taken place at the App Store following accusations of illegal activity. Apple has removed dozens of titles belonging to "mycompany," really developer Thuat Nguyen, who in recent days came to virtually control the top paid books category. At one point 40 out of the 50 top books were attributed to Nguyen, despite the fact that they were mostly non-localized Japanese comics, submitted within a space of two days and likely violating copyright. Many of these were given Vietnamese names, and priced at $5 apiece.

HTC slashes Desire pricing in wake of iPhone 4
T-Mobile UK has reduced pricing for its version of the HTC Desire in response to the release of the iPhone 4. There are two new contracts for the Desire, with the first composed of 100 minutes, 100 text messages and 3GB of data for the equivalent of $30 per month. At this level, the phone needs to be purchased for $55. The other plan consists of 600 minutes, 500 texts and 3GB of data for $38 per month and a $76 purchase price.

SK Telecom shoots for iPad, iPhone in South Korea
South Korea's biggest cellular carrier, SK Telecom, is in talks with Apple to carry both the iPad and the iPhone, according to the former's CEO, Man-won Jung. When either device might arrive is uncertain. The Wall Street Journal quotes Jung as saying that SK is "worried," given "noises about problems" with the iPhone 4. The comment is likely a reference to reception problems experienced by a number of early adopters.

Google: no Nexus One sequel or Google-branded Chrome devices
Google chief Eric Schmidt in a recent interview talked down the possibility of a sequel to the Nexus One. He treated the device as a one-off project to spur on Android hardware sales and claimed it was successful. Nintendo has no plans to develop iOS games
Nintendo's CEO and president, Satoru Iwata, rejected the idea of his company developing for Apple's iOS devices in the company's recent shareholder meeting. The executive took an Apple-like approach to software himself and said that Nintendo's games were inseparable from the hardware. Blockbuster delisting from NYSE under digital crush
Blockbuster has been dealt a major blow as it has been told it will likely be delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. The company had tried to keep its share price over the minimum $1 by combining its Class A and B shares through a reverse stock split but wasn't able to get enough votes. It had been warned of the problem in November but lost a vote at the meeting that was blamed on "low vote turnout."

iPad better than Kindle for reading; both slower than paper
Reading on an iPad is better than a Kindle, a study by Nielsen Norman has found. Both were slower than with real paper, but the iPad was considerably quicker for reading at 6.2 percent slower where Amazon's ostensibly better Kindle was actually slower, at 10.2 percent off of the time for paper. Apple's tablet also edged out the Kindle in usability, as iBooks not only had more clearly defined fonts but a much easier to understand page marker.

Nike+, iOS 4 experiences lost data, distance, high volumes
A Nike+ support forum is discussing numerous issues with iOS 4. According to users, upgrades to the most recent iOS release have caused problems with Nike's exercise sync gear, like lost workout histories, lost links or dropping connections with the Nike+ sensor and lost connections with the Nike+ remote. Most of the problems have been reported on the iPod touch and iPhone 3GS, but some have popped up for iPhone 4 users on the forum.

Sony cuts Reader prices to fend off competition
Sony followed Amazon and Barnes & Noble into price cuts on its e-book readers. The Reader Daily Edition has seen the steepest cut, falling from $350 to $300. Both of the lower-end readers have also seen drops, as the Pocket Edition now matches the Nook Wi-Fi at $150 (down from $170) and the Touch Edition carries a slight premium at $170 versus its earlier $200.

HTC sees 33% surge in profit thanks to Android
HTC today had one of its best spring quarters in recent memory thanks to Android. The smartphone producer saw its unaudited net profit jump 33 percent compared to a year ago to the equivalent of $268 million; its pure revenue grew by 58 percent to nearly $1.9 billion. Executives didn't say how many phones had shipped, but in late April it had predicted 4.5 million phones would arrive during the spring.

iPad builds now estimated at over 2 million per month
Apple's orders with Taiwanese manufacturers currently put iPad production at over 2 million units a month, according to a new research estimate. In particular, Apple is believed to have ordered between 2.3 and 2.35 million iPads for July alone. RED overcomes EPIC bug, gets US production
RED's Jim Jannard late last night updated videographers on the status of its next generation greater-than-HD cameras. He now says the company has overcome the major bug that had kept the EPIC and Scarlet back, and at least the 5K-capable EPIC will be made in the US. The delays have pushed back the cameras by an unspecified amount of time, but the founder was adamant the development time was also to ensure the camera was completely stable when it shipped.

Analyst drops Q3 iPhone numbers based on supplies, drawdown
Investors shouldn't expect Apple to have shipped as many iPhones during the June quarter as originally called for, says Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu. While earlier suggesting that as many as 9 million iPhones could be delivered, Wu has downgraded the quarter to 7.5 million units, a million below even Street consensus numbers. AT&T users complain of slowing 3G upload speeds
Multiple reports from AT&T subscribers have complained that their 3G upload rates have plummeted in recent days. Those who had uploads as quick as 1Mbps just days ago are now seeing speeds of 100Kbps or less. Apple acknowledges App Store fraud incident
Developer Thuat Nguyen and all his apps were indeed banned from the App Store this weekend, an Apple statement confirms. The company remains relatively mum on why, except to say Nguyen's software was "violating the developer Program License Agreement," displaying "fradulent purchase patterns." To assuage some concerns, the company mentions that developers "do not receive any iTunes confidential customer data when an app is downloaded."

NTT DoCoMo may allow unlocked phones to catch iPhone owners
NTT DoCoMo had the potential to shake up the Japanese cellphone industry today with a claim by the Nikkei Business Daily that the carrier will finally start allowing unlocked devices on its network. Company head Ryuji Yamada is claimed to have opened the possibility of both allowing unlocked phones on the network and offering software to unlock phones so customers can switch. Terms, such as whether it would be available immediately or only after time has elapsed in a contract, weren't mentioned.

QNAP outs QMobile App for NAS media streaming
QNAP, best known for its NAS servers on Tuesday released an app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad that, along with a new firmware update for its servers, lets users stream multimedia files between the devices. The QMobile app (free, App Store) is compatible with QNAP Turbo NAS servers that are running the latest 3.3 update to its NAS management utility update. Chrome, WebKit get orientation support for tablets
Google is working on bringing orientation support to its Chrome browser and operating system. Meant for tablets, the feature is being integrated into the WebKit rendering engine and would allow users to steer in a racing video game or control the direction of a marble on a table simply by tilting the host device. Apple Records edged closer towards Beatles digital tracks on Tuesday with word that it would put up 15 remastered versions of its non-Beatles albums. The famous label plans an Internet launch on October 26 for early albums from well-known artists like Badfinger, Billy Preston and James Taylor, many of whom were working with one or more Beatles. May Mac sales show continued growth, little iPad damage
US Mac sales were up 35 percent year-over-year in May, according to new data from the NPD Group. The number compares with 39 percent in April, and Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggests that for the whole of Apple's third quarter, Macs may grow 19 to 23 percent versus the same period in 2009. This would represent between 3.1 and 3.2 million computers sold.

ASUS hopes to counter iPad with detachable Eee Pad keyboard
ASUS CEO Jerry Shen in a talk on Monday outlined a new line of approach for how his company would tackle the iPad. SaskTel to launch HSPA+ August 16, still talking iPhone 4

US government opens multi-platform app 'store'
The US federal government has re-launched its USA.gov website last week with tweaks it has learned from the private sector. The less bureaucratic website now also includes an app store, with 18 free apps currently available for download. The apps are compatible with iPhones, Blackberries and Android devices, though not every app is available for every type of device. The term app is also used loosely, as some of them are simply websites optimized for viewing on the smaller screens found on mobile devices.

Samsung overtakes Apple in notebook sales race
Samsung rode the coattails of the netbook trend to pass not only Sony but Apple in notebook sales early this year, iSuppli found today. Its portable shipments shot up 14.9 percent in the first three months of the year to top 1.9 million, or just enough to pass Apple's 1.8 million MacBooks for seventh place and to clearly overtake Sony. The year-over-year growth easily soared past the industry, as Samsung nearly doubled its shipments from just 985,000 PCs in early 2009.

Microsoft may slash jobs on Wednesday
A late-breaking scoop from within Microsoft has revealed that the company is close to cutting jobs as soon as Wednesday. The headcount lost isn't known but wouldn't be as large-scale as with the over 5,800 jobs cut at the lowest point of last year's economic crash. Mac sales still up, despite iPad release

If the iPad is going to cut away at the audience for more full-featured computers, it's not going to be the Mac audience, apparently. Even though Apple introduced a tablet earlier this year, Mac sales are still up 35%, showing that the iPad is much more a new category all to itself than a subset of desktop or laptop users. NPD data from the month of May hints that Macs may see 19-23% growth year-over-year this year, which would top Wall Street's estimates.
If there's an issue in Apple's line at all, it's the iPod -- that device is set up to be down 13% year-over-year
