The Engadget Show: Inside the gadget markets of China, part one - Hong Kong
China may have its ups and downs, but there's no denying that it's a geeky wonderland for Engadget advocates. Oh, and we're not just talking about KIRFs either -- this country of 1.3 billion people has a lot more tech love to offer. In this first episode of a two-part series, we'll be showing you around the two hottest gadget districts of Hong Kong -- Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po. California markets show strongest demand for Apple products
California residents represent Apple's most loyal buyers, according to a recent survey conducted by the research group Experian Simmons. The unsurprising results showed that over 32 percent of adults in the region already own an iPod, iPhone or Mac computer. Massive, solar powered bird is overseeing Coachella, pretty stoked about its chance to see Phoenix
This massive structure will greet you this weekend if you're headed to the Coachella music festival. It's a 45-foot tall solar-powered crane (the bird), and it boasts multicolored LEDs for what will surely be an awe-inspiring night. The huge art installation has a wingspan of 150 feet and weighs about 35,000 pounds. The photovoltaic-powered birdie was designed by Crimson Collective, and it's just another reason we're regretting our decision not to head out west for the festival. News: Some colleges rejecting iPad due to network, security concerns
Some US universities are rejecting the iPad from their campus networks due to connection and security issues. Sprint's iPad '4G case' features an Overdrive pocket, oodles of irony
Listen Sprint, we get it, you want the whole US drooling over an iDevice hitting the internet at 4G speeds. First you extolled the virtues of WiMAX in an ad featuring the iPhone, and now you're going so far as to give away an special "4G" iPad case for free with the purchase of an Overdrive from Best Buy -- and yes, to be sure, the tote features a special pouch for your new mobile hotspot. Sprint puts out iPad case with 4G router pocket
Sprint in an unusual step on Friday revealed an iPad sleeve. The 4G Case holds Apple's tablet but also has a space just large enough to hold an Overdrive 4G router. With both, the case gives iPad owners a way of carrying a 3-6Mbps WiMAX connection along with the iPad and sharing it with both the main device and four others nearby.

Apple modifies serial number format with new MacBook Pros
Apple has adopted a new serial-number format for its latest MacBook Pro models announced earlier this week. The new serial numbers utilize a 12-character sequence, adding an additional character to the previous layout. Although the scheme only provides one additional character, it gives the company much more room for ongoing expansion.

Creative Sound Blaster SB1250 wireless touch controller hits the FCC
There's not a lot to go on with this one, unfortunately, but it looks like Creative could be about to add a "wireless touch controller" to its array of Sound Blaster products. As revealed by our friends at the FCC, the Sound Blaster SB1250 (codenamed "Lories") apparently packs a touchscreen of unspecified size, along with a couple of basic media playback keys, a headphone jack and, judging from the test reports, 2.4GHz wireless connectivity. AT&T employee vacation halt pointing to June iPhone launch?
AT&T has allegedly barred employees from scheduling vacation time in June, likely ensuring a full staff when the next iPhone arrives on the market. SaskTel: Next-gen iPhone statements 'not a confirmation'
An earlier claim by SaskTel's CEO, Robert Watson, should not be taken as evidence of a new iPhone coming in June or early July, a carrier spokesperson now says. Wir haben in dieser Rubrik ja schon einiges kurioses gezeigt, aber das nachfolgende Produkt ist wirklich mehr als seltsam, geekig und nutzlos zu gleich. Maya Design hat die Sprocket Pocket erfunden. Eine Tasche mit Sichtfenster, die man sich hinten auf die Jacke bügelt oder anderweitig befestigt um darin sein iPad zu verstauen. RIM chief: no market for tablets, touch-only phones
RIM's co-chief Mike Lazaridis downplayed many of Apple's efforts today in a keynote at the TD Newcrest technology conference in Toronto. The executive was concerned that there wasn't necessarily a market for tablets like the iPad and that any devices would have to be put in the context of computers and smartphones. iPad claiming .03% of all 'net traffic already

I must say, my iPad has become my primary way to access the Web when I'm at home, and it looks like Apple's latest device is getting a lot of exercise from other iPad users too.
In a report from NetApplications, the iPad averaged 0.03 percent, per day, of all Web traffic for the ten days after its launch. Launch weekend had particularly high numbers, and then the numbers trended down as people went back to work, presumably without their iPads. The numbers actually approach

So, was all that hubbub for nothing? Apple reverses rejection of political caricature app
Apple has reversed its rejection of an iPhone app, NewsToons, that features caricatures of political figures and various other editorial cartoons, according to the Wall Street Journal. Leak shows 7-, 10-inch Dell tablets
Dell's plans to launch multiple tablet sizes was confirmed today through a memo today. Both 7- and 10-inch adaptations of the Mini 5 are on the way and have been given rudimentary mockups. Intego outs Mac Malware, HellRTS, with backdoor capability
Intego has sent out an alert to a new form of Mac malware called HellRTS. It is a low risk backdoor code allowing remote users to take control of a computer. The RealBasic-built, universal code can set up its own server on an infected Mac, configure a server port and password. It duplicates itself, using the names of Mac applications, adding the new applications to a user's login items, ensuring that it starts up at login. It sends e-mail via its own mail server, contacting a remote server to give access to an infected Mac.

Apple files patent for new iTunes "Concert Ticket +" System
Apple has been exploring the concept of an iPhone- and iTunes-based system for event tickets, a patent application reveals. People would be able to buy a ticket in one of several ways, such as through a manned or unmanned kiosk, or else on a computer, or directly through their phone. Kiosk tickets could be transferred through near-field communication, or special paper passes, which could copy data to an iPhone via an RFID tag. Alternately, a camera might be used to scan a barcode or matrix.

Wired still using Flash tool for iPad magazine app
Wired today insisted that its magazine app for tablets will still reach the iPad despite being built using Adobe's Flash-to-iPhone tool. Publisher Conde Nast said it was working with Adobe to develop the reader with the middleware but was adamant that it would still pass Apple's iPhone 4.0 guidelines, which explicitly ban cross-compiling software like the Flash CS5 component.

We'd heard through the grapevine that the engineers at Round Rock were working on a number of slates to fill the Streak lineup, but man, we didn't see this coming at least not yet. Apple in talks to use AMD Opteron, Turion chips?
Apple is in "advanced discussions" that may see it use AMD chips to supplement Intel, a potentially major rumor claimed on Friday. Executives and others from AMD have reportedly been seen visiting Apple's Cupertino campus and giving briefings to help Apple work on AMD-based Macs. Apple Q2 results call to be held April 20th
Apple has announced that it will hold a second-quarter results call on Tuesday, April 20th, at around 2PM Pacific time, or 5PM Eastern. Though direct participation is being reserved mainly for analysts, the company will also be airing a live QuickTime stream which can be replayed for the next two weeks via Apple's website. Apple has again ranked first in a BusinessWeek list of the world's 50 most innovative corporations. The results are based on a poll of 1,590 executives from different countries, using a deliberately ambiguous definition of the term "innovation," though generally referring to bringing something new and profitable to the market, whether a product, service or strategy. Counterbalancing opinion is a 10 percent weight on stock returns, along with 5 percent values assigned to three-year revenue and margin growth.

Verizon narrows 4G launch window down to fall 2010
Verizon chief technical officer Dick Lynch in an update has put the launch of the company's 4G network in the fall. Once pegged only for the second half of the year, the Long Term Evolution (LTE) access will reach its promised 25 to 30 cities within the last three months of the year. Lynch didn't explain the delay but did reiterate that "friendly" customers will be using the service early, in summer.

Wenn auch musikalisch nicht ganz unsere Baustelle, Armin van Buuren gehört wohl zu den populärsten und bestbezahlten DJs auf dem Planeten. Nun soll Ende Juni unter seiner Schirmherrschaft die erste DJ-Simulation für die Wii herauskommen. In the mix nennt sich das ganze recht profan und wird nicht wie bei DJ Hero über extra Controller funktionieren sondern ausschließlich über Wiimote und Nunchuk. Da sind wir mal gespannt. In dem Spiel kann man die Karriere eines Star-DJs vom Kellerclub zur Mayday durchexerzieren, Studioarbeit mit Tracks produzieren inklusive.

HP Mini 5102 review
There are netbooks and then there's the HP Mini 5102. Or at least that's always been our impression of the 10-inch business and education targeted laptop, since it isn't every day that you see what's supposed to be a secondary system with a 7,200rpm hard drive, durable aluminum chassis, spill resistant keyboard and capactive touchscreen options. Or you know, a $415 starting price. The Mini 5102 doesn't fall into the same class as those $299 netbooks -- considering our review unit rings up at $668 and all -- but does the extra dough really pay off in a noticeably better shrunken computing experience? Am Beispiel New York lässt sich bereits sehen, was passiert, wenn Google die Panorama-Aufnahmen der Street View mit gerenderten 3D-Modellen von Gebäuden exakt zusammenführt. First public jailbreak for iPhone 4.0 premieres
The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta, believed to be the first publicly-available jailbreak for Apple's iPhone 4.0 firmware. The code relies on the same basic exploit used since iPhone 2.x, and in theory allows people to run unofficial apps. Because iPhone 4.0 itself is new however, the hack is really intended for developers intending to transition their apps to the new firmware.

Google envisions Cloud Print for Chrome OS, mobile
Google today addressed a common problem of portable devices by previewing a technology that would allow them to print anywhere. Cloud Print would use the typical printing option in an app but send the job to an Internet service that would in turn talk to an Internet-aware printer or one put through a proxy. As long as the printer is registered, a user could always print out a document even when well away from the home network.

360iDev: Hands-on with Freeverse's Warpgate HD and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

We got to play two of Freeverse's current and future offerings this past week at 360iDev. Warpgate HD was the first -- it's out now on the App Store, and is due out for the iPhone and iPod touch. It was originally designed for the iPhone, but it ended up being a good fit for the larger device, so they readied it for a launch release. It's a fun title, although it doesn't quite take full advantage of the bigger hardware yet; as you play the space trading simulation, you get the feeling that there could probably be a little more to it on the iPad. It's still a fun title, though.

Auf Microsofts Think Next-Event in Tel Aviv wurde nun gezeigt, wie die Xbox360-Kamera den Spieler scannt und die Bewegungen auf den Avatar überträgt. Quasi die Sicht von innen, der Maschine, sozusagen. Geschlecht und weitere Mitspieler zu erkennen scheint keine Hexerei, vielmehr entpuppt sich Natal als die Vorform eines HAL9000, wenn man technophob ist vorausgesetzt. Supposedly legit WePad video gives us a case of the JooJoos
Ok, so the 11.6-inch WePad was launched running a video and not the real UI. Big deal, at least now we know it'll run Windows 7 in a pinch. In an attempt to save face, the lads at Neofonie posted a video showing what appears to be a real-live working WePad in action. Unfortunately, touch is not yet enabled so the navigation is accomplished with a USB mouse assist. Having been burned once, we're not sure what we can believe about this €450 Atom N450-powered slate. Sony Ericsson returns to profit through cuts, smartphones
Sony Ericsson today surprised the industry by turning a small profit for its first quarter of 2010. The cellphone designer swung from a $226 million loss as recently as this fall to a $28.4 million surplus in the winter. Some of the recovery came through job cuts but was also helped by a major shift towards smartphones, which included the first full uninterrupted quarter of sales for the Satio but also the late shipping of the Vivaz and its most important phone, the Android-based XPERIA X10.

Neues MacBook Pro hat integrierte Antenne am optischen Laufwerk

Ziemlich klar, dass die Kollegen von ifixit nicht lange brauchen, bis auch das neue MacBook Pro in alle Einzelteile zerlegt wird und siehe da, trotz der identischen Hülle hat sich im Innern ein bisschen was getan. Zum Beispiel wurde das WiFi-/Bluetooth-Board verlegt, so dass die Funkverkabelung nicht mehr durch das Kamerakabel laufen muss. Dafür wurde eine Antenne am in Nähe des optischen Laufwerks installiert. Man wird sehen, inwiefern sich das in Zukunft auf die WLAN-Performance auswirken wird, scheint aber nachhaltig gedacht.

The Mountain View crew has decided to solve one of Chrome OS' significant shortcomings -- namely the lack of a printer stack or drivers -- by interposing itself between apps and the printing hardware. Opera hat eine zweite Beta von Opera 10.52 für Mac herausgebraucht. Aufgrund der langen Entwicklungszeit hat sich die Versionsnummer von 10.50 auf 10.52 geändert. Im Gegensatz zur im Februar veröffentlichten ersten Beta unterstützt die neue Vorabversion auch ältere Macs mit PowerPC-Prozessoren. Der Browser benötigt aber mindestens Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.

Zum fünfjährigen Jubiläum der Walkman-Handy Serie und nach immerhin 130 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren hat Sony Ericsson gestern die Walkman-Handys Zylo und Spiro vorgestellt, die besonderes Augenmerk auf die Nutzung von Facebook und Twitter legt. Das Zylo kommt mit vorinstallierten Hintergrundgeräuschen mit denen man allen Anrufern verschiedene Aufenthaltsorte vorgaukeln, (unter anderem mit Büro- oder Strassenlärm oder Geräuschen aus einem Restaurant) aber natürlich auch Musik hören kann. Sieht so aus als ob die iPad-Nachfrage in den Staaten Apple überrascht hat: das Erscheinungsdatum für den Rest der Welt hat sich nämlich von Ende April auf Ende Mai verschoben. Erst am 10. Steampunk iMac: verkehrte Welt

Man kann dem iMac mit Sicherheit einiges vorwerfen, langweiliges oder anstrengendes Design gehören bestimmt nicht dazu. Das hält Woodguy32 dennoch nicht davon ab, euren Apple-Desktop in bester Steampunk-Manier zu verschandeln pimpen die einen sagen so, die anderen so. Auch wenn wir jetzt noch einen Monat länger auf as iPad warten müssen, mit dem amtlichen Ladegerät können wir uns ja schon mal ausrüsten. Das iPad braucht nämlich so viel Strom, dass es nicht einfach an alle Rechner angestöpselt werden kann, um genug für den nächsten Ausflug zu tanken. Samsung NB 30 bekommt Touchscreen und höheren Preis

Samsung verpasst seinem Mini-Laptop NB30 einen Touchscreen. Das ist für viele User immer noch Neuland und auch, wenn sich vielleicht nicht alle sofort darauf stürzen werden, sehen wir hier langsam aber sicher einen Trend. Moonse: iPad Fake mit Android

Wirklich nicht der erste iPad Nachbau aus China, aber irgendwie hat es doch unser Interesse geweckt, denn für nur 130 Dollar bekommt man einen 7-Zoll Touchscreen mit 600MHz Rockchip RK2808 Prozessor, den man möglicherweise bis zum Launch noch auf einen Cortex-A8 upgraded. Und natürlich ist Android 1,5 als OS auch ein Argument. Dazu kommen noch SD-Slot, WiFI, Kamera, USB und 5 Stunden Batterielaufzeit. Es ist zwar ein wenig dicker als ein iPad wiegt dafür aber auch nur die Hälfte. Den Prototyp gibt es zumindest schon mal.

Toshiba bringt noch zwei Tablets dieses Jahr

Toshiba hatte schon länger angekündigt, dass sie Anfang 2011 mit einem eigenen Tablet rauskommen wollen, aber jetzt gibt es mehr Details. Erstens: gleich zwei kommen noch dieses Jahr. Das Premium Model soll mit Windows 7 laufen und 10-Zoll groß sein und - tatsächlich - zwei Screens haben. Das klingt für uns sehr nach Courier. Das zweite kommt mit Android und ist billiger, was sonst ist nicht klar.

Klar, wir haben schon eine Menge Bewegungssensitiver Spiele dank Wii, Sonys Plastation Move und später auch Project Natal, aber da geht doch noch was. Dave & Adie haben Moject (Motion Projection) schon mal als Prototyp entwickelt, dass einen Spiele über den Bewegungssensor des iPhone gesteuert via Picoprojektor auf eine Wand wirft um damit durchs virtuelle All zu rasen. MeeGo 1.0 jetzt im Videodemo auf Fernsehern, Netbooks und Smartphone

Wir haben zwar durch die GUI-Screens schon eienn ungefähren Eindruck davon wie MeeGo aussehen wird, aber bislang hatten wir es noch nicht im Video gesehen. Und jetzt zeigt Intel gleich einen Haufen Demos auf einem Acer Aspire One Netbook, auf einem Fernseher und auf einem Smartphone. Intel geht es blendend: Rekordquartal aber Atom schrumpft

Intel hat soeben seine Quartalsergebnisse vorgelegt und die sind blendend. 10,3 Milliarden haben sie eingespielt, 2,4 Milliarden davon Gewinn, 44% Umsatzsteigerung im Vergeleich zum Vorjahresquartal. Das iPad bekommt einen USB Audio-Ausgang

Es ist schon merkwürdig. Ausgerechnet das Camera Connection Kit soll dafür sorgen, dass Apples iPad vielleicht doch noch eher zu einem nutzbaren Musikinstrument wird. Das nämlich soll USB Audio Class 1 bekommen und somit liessen sich über das Kit Soundkarten wie M-Audio Fast Track oder Edirol UA-25 anschliessen. Laut einer Aussage von William Stewart unterstützt es bislang allerdings nur 16Bit Sampleraten, 24Bit soll aber folgen. Zumindest jeder der plant mit einem iPad zum DJ zu werden wird sich freuen. Googles Nexus One verkauft sich ja angeblich nicht sonderlich gut, aber jetzt haben sie bei der Bekanntgabe ihrer Finanzergebnisse klargestellt, dass sie mit dem Nexus One schwarze Zahlen schreiben. Und mehr als das. Denn nicht nur will Google das Smartphonebusiness ausbauen, sondern sie haben bestätigt, dass es pro Tag 60.000 Aktivierungen von Android gibt. Erschwinglich: Leica V-Lux 20 Leak

Es mag keine M9 sein, aber die neue Leica dürfte Fans der Marke dennoch interessieren. Die V-Lux 20 soll angeblich in 5 Tagen angekündigt werden und mit einem 3-Zoll LCD, 25-300mm Zoom und GPS kommen. Wenn man bedenkt, dass sie auf der Panasonic ZS-7 basiert, die es jetzt schon überall für 340 Dollar gibt, ist der offizielle Preis von 744 Dollar (549 Euro) allerdings wirklich nur etwas für Markensüchtige. Oder Leica hat noch ein paar Überraschungen. Am 9 Mai soll sie zu haben sein.

Für alle Kellerbewohner gibt es gute Neuigkeiten. Winscape ist ein virtuelles Fenster, dass auf die Bewegungen des Bewohners reagiert und das Bild passend angleicht. Dafür gibt es sogar einen Bausatz. Aber wer es sich sparen möchte einen Mac Pro und zwei Plasmabildschirme so mit der Wiimote zu verbinden, dass am Ende auch alles so toll aussieht wie im Video nach dem Break, der kann es tatsächlich ab Juli auch für 3000 Dollar kaufen. Nie wieder Treiber suchen: Google Chrome OS druckt aus der Wolke

Wir warten ja immer noch auf das Google Chrome OS, aber eins wissen wir jetzt. Druckertreiber braucht man für einen Rechner mit dem Betriebssystem wohl nicht. Die Idee: Chrome OS schickt aus dem Browser, oder dem Web App (was anderes gibt es da ja nicht) den Druckauftrag ins Netz, der Google Cloud Print Server sucht nach dem passenden Drucker und schickt den Auftrag dann einfach zurück. Und, Magie, der Drucker nebenan druckt auch wenn sein Auftrag einmal quer durch die Welt gereist ist. Open Source ist der Code dafür auch noch. Kenzero Porno Trojaner verlangt Lösegeld für Browser History

Wir haben schon viele obskure Viren gesehen, aber der Japanische Trojaner Kenzero ist wirklich ein ganz neues Genre. Er entführt die Browser History der User die so blöd waren sich auf einer bestimmten japanischen Pornoseite rumzutreiben und droht damit sie zu veröffentlichen, wenn nicht die 12 Euro Lösegeld zahlt. Die Drohung: ein vollkommen zerstörter Online-Ruf. In Europa soll es laut BBC einen ähnlichen Virus geben, der allerdings verlangt 400 Dollar, wartet aber gar nicht erst auf die Überweisung, sondern sammelt so Kreditkartennummern.

iPad im Netz schon fast so groß wie Blackberry und Android

Die schlechte News für Apple hatten wir heute schon. Jetzt kommt die gute. Kaum mal 10 Tage auf dem Markt hatte das iPad schon einen Web-Browser-Anteil von 0,03% der gesamten aufgerufenen Webseiten. NetApplications.com jedenfalls sieht es jedenfalls schnell an RIM und Android vorbeiziehen, die derzeit bei 0,04 Prozent liegen. Bis zum Anschluss an das iPhone mit 0,6 Prozent wird es aber wohl noch etwas dauern.

Sony Ericsson kehrt in Gewinnzone zurück

Anhang 61416Ryan Hoagland hat mehr als ein Jahr daran gearbeitet, aus einem Mac Pro an zwei großen Plasma-Bildschirmen und einer Wiimote-Tracking-Einheit virtuelle Fenster zu bauen. Der Clou ist, dass die Bildschirme entprechend der Position der Tracking-Einheit den passenden Blickwinkel anzeigen. Ein YouTube-Video zeigt ein beeindruckendes Beispiel, bei dem die Fenster eine schicke Aussicht auf die Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco zeigen. Camera Connection Kit: iPad könnte USB Audio Interfaces unterstützen
Mit dem Camera Connection Kit könnten Anwender auch Audio-Geräte anschließen, die ein USB Audio-Interface verwenden. iPhone 4 Gehäuse gesichtet?
Dem bekannten Apple Weblog "9to5Mac" wurden unscharfe Fotos eines angeblichen iPhone 4 Gehäuse zugespielt. Notizzetteldienst Evernote mit Versionierung

MuscleNerd, ein bekannter iPhone-Hacker, veröffentlichte mit redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA den ersten Jailbreak für iPhone OS 4 Geräte. Das, bisher nur für Entwickler verfügbare, neue Betriebssystem für iPhone und iPod touch kann durch diesen Jailbreak, wie auch die Vorgängerversionen mit unsignierter Software aus anderen Quellen als dem App Store befüllt werden. Gerade für Entwickler, die mit Apples Politik des App Stores einverstanden sind, ist dies interessant, da sie so ihre Software auch ohne einen kostenpflichtigen Entwickleraccount auf ihren Geräten laufen lassen können.

Das iPhone als Ticket für Konzerte
Ein kürzlich veröffentlichtes Patent zeigt Ideen von Apple das iPhone als Ticket für Konzerte und Events zu verwenden. Das über iTunes gekaufte "iTunes Concert Ticket" wird dabei wie eine App auf dem Gerät gespeichert und bietet, wie ein Papierticket, einen Strichcode, der am Eingang zum Konzert eingelesen werden soll. Neben dem Zugang zu Konzerten und Events finden sich auch Hinweise auf die Möglichkeit an Terminals Waren oder Dienstleistungen zu bezahlen.
Sehr Interessant sind auch die Hinweise auf einen RFID Leser, der in einem zukünftigen iPhone integriert sein könnte, so soll es möglich

Preisanstieg im Schweizer iTunes Store (& immer mehr «Nur mit Album»)
Seit diesen Tagen präsentiert sich der iTunes Store Schweiz in einem Wandel: Einzeltitel sind neu für CHF 1.60 bzw. CHF 2.20 statt wie bisher für CHF 1.50 und CHF 2.00 erhältlich und immer mehr Alben können gar nur noch «Nur mit Album» erworben werden. Uns erreichen zahlreiche Mails von macprime.ch-Leser, die uns vor allem auf den zweiten Umstand aufmerksam machen: Vor allem Alben der elektronischen Musik gibt es mittlerweile fast ausschliesslich nur noch als komplettes Album bei denen die einzelnen Songs nicht als Einzeltitel erworben werden können.
«Seit ein paar Tagen ist iTunes völlig durchgedreht», schreiben die Leser, oder die Preise werden mit «UBS Boni-Abzocker-Massstab» verglichen, da man, auch wenn einem nur ein Song kauft, zum Album gezwungen wird (wie früher) und deshalb für ein Song schnell mal 9 bis 15 Franken fällig werden. «Die Musikindustrie killt das einzige funktionierende System» und «die Musikindustrie schneidet sich so selbst das einzig verbliebene Standbein ab!».

Apple-Patent: Eintrittskarten über iTunes
Die US-Webseite Patently Apple erläutert einen interessanten Apple-Patentantrag rund um elektronische Veranstaltungstickets. Zusammengefasst geht es um den Vertrieb von Eintrittskarten für Konzerte, Sportveranstaltungen oder Messen über den iTunes Store. Die virtuellen Tickets können auf einem iPhone oder iPod touch gespeichert und bei Bedarf ähnlich den heute bereits einigen Fluglinien oder der Bahn verwendeten E-Tickets vorgezeigt werden. Zudem lässt sich deren Einsatz mit Bonusoptionen verknüpfen, Apple nennt hier unter anderem Bonus-Tracks oder Live-Mitschnitte bei Konzerten, T-Shirts und Merchandise oder auch Rabatte als Beispiele.

Be clear on this: if you're not a jailbreak app developer then the redsn0w 0.9.5 beta release is not for you. The iPhone OS 4 jailbreak previously hinted at is for real and it's for devs only so that they can prep their wares for the summer update. Don't worry, it doesn't reveal anything new to Apple and no, it won't work on the iPad -- it's Mac OSX only, iPhone 3G only, and iPhone 4.0 beta 1 only for now. But hey, it's early days, at least you know it's out there and that people smarter than you are tending to things.

Samsung launches investigation of chip lines following cancer allegations
Here's an odd one. Samsung, which has been known to be on better-than-average terms with the South Korean government in the past, is launching independent investigations in response to reports that "toxic materials used in chip making may have caused cancer in some of its employees." New iPhone in June, claims SaskTel CEO
Saskatchewan-based SaskTel isn't the biggest Canadian carrier out there -- it's very regional, along the lines of Cincinnati Bell for the US, in terms of subscribers -- but it's definitely a legit company, and its CEO Robert Watson has casually divulged some potentially major news to the Leader-Post. 360iDev: Game Jam creations

Tuesday night at the 360iDev conference in San Jose, around 60 developers gathered in a room on the eBay campus around 8pm as security locked them in for the night (one developer joined the group via Skype -- that's him on the big screen above). Their goal? A game jam. Before 8am the next day, they would put together working prototypes of games, either based on their own ideas, or revolving around the night's theme of "Tiny." Not all developers were there to make new games -- a few were there to work on current projects or offer up their help to others. MacForensicsLab has updated its computer forensics suite, releasing MacForensicsLab 3.0. The cross-platform suite aids investigators in finding and recovering deleted, embedded and corrupted files. Sony outsourcing some VAIO design to beat Apple, HP
Sony will stop designing all of its VAIO PCs itself, the company's business deputy president Ryosuke Akahane revealed in an interview today. The Japanese PC house will split its line into two tiers, with a top tier being its usual self-designed computers and a new, second tier being designed by a contractor that would simply attach the VAIO name to the design. They would include Sony-specific features like a help button, PCPro was told, but would have Sony only approve the design rather than shape it from the outset.

US, Germany, Russia investigating HP bribery claims
An investigation is underway into allegations that HP may have bribed the Russian government to win a computer contract. German, Russian and now reportedly US officials are checking a claim that the PC builder sent the equivalent of $10.9 million to Russia's prosecutor general's office, through a German partner firm, to guarantee that it would get a lucrative deal supplying PCs. The bribe was allegedly elaborate masked and routed through shells in the US and locations as far away as Belize and the British Virgin Islands.

We'd heard a couple times that the Nexus One was selling at a mere trickle, but what we haven't heard is whether the phones that have sold are enough to generate a profit for Google -- and on its earnings call today, the company claimed for the first time that its superphone is indeed in the black.
