iPhone OS 4.0: Enterprise Features
Filed under: iPhoneApple has posted an outline of what it believes to be the key enterprise features of iPhone OS 4.0. Third-party multitasking, enhanced security and mobile device management are among the marquee features.
As a former IT director, I'm drawn in by mobile device management (MDM). Setting up individual pieces of hardware is a time-consuming hassle. New MDM APIs let developers integrate features like wireless configuration and update, remote wipes and policy compliance (no games, please!) into their apps. Additionally, wireless app distribution lets managers then install those apps over Wi-Fi and 3G.

Motorola software update makes 3D automatic, except for the "buying a new TV" part
It's not like a couple of button presses on a remote was the big gap between us and the perfect 3D experience but when most people can't even figure out if they're actually watching HDTV, some automated assistance can't hurt. myTouch Slide found in the wild, looking good in red
Yeah, we saw the myTouch Slide back in January, but it certainly seems to have come a long way in the past few months. For starters, the phone is on now, showing off a slightly custom Android UI and that 480 x 320 screen. The handset also looks to have gotten a fancy red (or is that form of pink?) paint job, and doesn't look half bad for it. Our guess is we'll be seeing this in a number of colors, just like the myTouch 3G, but that's just speculation. There aren't any other details about the phone on offer here, or knowledge on exactly how this shot managed to leak out, but we figure we'll be learning more

MacBook Pro stock dwindles, halts at retail
At least some Apple Stores are no longer buying more stock of MacBook Pros, in what is most likely a run-up to an imminent hardware refresh, sources indicate. A worker at one store comments that the shop's inventory manager has simply been barred from ordering more Pros, even though there are currently no more units to sell. A staffer at a second outlet says that his/her store has completely run out of 13- and 17-inch systems, while a person at a third shop mentions that all three models are in extremely low quantities there.

Netflix for Wii now 'fully available' to all users
Netflix discs have already been shipping out to quite a few Wii users for a couple of weeks now, but Nintendo and Netflix have only just now finally announced that the discs and service are "fully available" to all users as of today. RED takes EPIC pre-orders, preps iPhone preview streaming
RED used the occasion of the NAB trade show to firm up its camera plans. It's near shipping the very early test versions of the EPIC, known as Tattoo models, to its closest customers; these should arrive in May. Pre-orders have also begun for the stage two program of existing RED ONE owners and should see the $19,500 camera reach buyers in roughly July or August.

Google Docs gains real time editing, speed
Google on Monday released a new codebase with several enhancements to Google Docs. Like in desktop processors, users now have the use of a margin ruler, better numbering and bullets options and easier image placement options. In spreadsheets, there is a newfound formula editing bar, cell auto-complete, drag-and-drop columns and other features not previously available.

VirusBarrier Server 3 adds remote access, two-way firewall
Intego has released an update to its network protection software, VirusBarrier Server. Version 3 adds a variety of new features, including 64-bit support and remote GUI administration with full access to settings and configurations. The system allows administrators to manage multiple servers using the remote interface. The update also integrates a two-way firewall, configurable using presets or individual rule-based settings.

Princeton threatens to block iPads over Wi-Fi problems
Princeton University has issued a warning to students, asking them not to connect iPads to the school's Wi-Fi network. "These devices are continuing to use an IP address they have been leased well beyond the time they should," according to a note from Princeton's IT department. "This behavior causes a disruption on the campus network." The memo adds that should IT staff judge a particular iPad to be causing problems, it may be blocked from Princeton's Wi-Fi entirely.

iAds could make a billion dollars, help Google make their deal

There's not a lot of details out about Apple's upcoming mobile advertising program, iAds, quite yet, but Broadpoint Amtech is already convinced it's a moneymaker. Analysts there say that the program could generate a whopping US$4.67 billion in revenue in just one year's time. Of course, that's a high-end guess, but even the medium figures are pretty amazing -- analyst Brian Marshall suggests that even conservatively, Apple could earn $2.48 billion. HTC EVO 4G shows up in Sprint inventory, shots of the accessories surface
Need something to wash that Kin marketing out of your mouth? How about some new tidbits on the superphone to end all superphones? Apple halts retail orders for MacBook Pros ahead of new models
Apple last week instated a stay on new retail orders for MacBook Pros as it prepares to introduce the first significant updates to the professional notebook line in over a year. Google acquires Plink to improve visual search
Plink today said it had been bought out by Google. The deal gives Google access the technology behind Plink's art recognition app PlinkArt and will focus directly on improving Google's photo recognition and search tool, Google Goggles. PlinkArt will still remain but won't be updated, its creator said.

Heute hat der Software-Hersteller Adobe die neuen Versionen der erfolgreichen Creative Suite Designpakete vorgestellt und verspricht zahlreiche neue Funktionen. Mac OS X 10.7 delayed by iPhone 4.0 work?
Work on Mac OS X 10.7 has been delayed, says Daring Fireball's John Gruber. The tech writer notes that some months ago, he received word that Apple had "tentative plans" to ship a developer beta of the OS at this year's WWDC, likely to be scheduled for early June. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 is chasing "Appleís line"
Microsoft's Charlie Kindel in a Dutch speech Sunday acknowledged that Windows Phone 7 carried was similar to the iPhone. He was quick to acknowledge that the new mobile OS was often pursuing "Apple's line." SAP-Umbau: Entwickler erhalten bis Ende 2014 Jobgarantie

Jobs: No more support for first-generation iPhone
Apple will no longer be providing firmware updates for the first-generation iPhone, released in June 2007, says CEO Steve Jobs. The company recently announced iPhone 4.0, a major summer firmware update that will introduce elements like folders and multitasking. Occasionally we've had strangers -- very likely non-Engadget readers -- coming up to us and ask, "Sorry mate, but is that the iPad?" To which we reply, "No, it's the Dell Mini 5." This may sound like a silly boo-boo to make, but there is this common misconception of the iPad being just "a bigger iPhone" while not knowing how much bigger it is (despite our best effort). To clear this up once and for all, we've brough the two devices in question together -- the Mini 5 / Streak smartphone on the left, and the iPad on the right. Job done.

HP schließt 3Com-Übernahme ab
Hewlett-Packard hat die Übernahme von 3Com abgeschlossen. Die 3Com-Produkte sollen jetzt mit dem bestehenden Portfolio von HP ProCurve, der Netzwerksparte des Konzerns, zusammengeführt werden. Seagate preloads Paramount movies on FreeAgent Go drives
Seagate on Monday said it would ship its 500GB FreeAgent Go portable hard drives with movies from Paramount. Initially, users who register their drives will get access to the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie for no extra cost. Those same hard drives contain 20 other Paramount movies, which can be unlocked by purchasing a license key. The movies then become viewable on a number of devices, including desktop or notebook PCs, as well as HDTVs, thanks to the preloaded FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player.

The new suite makes several major changes, perhaps most notably upgrading Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro to 64-bit code on Mac and Windows systems, improving speed on modern multi-core processors. So mag es für ein bisschen Kopfschütteln sorgen, wenn man mitbekommt, dass ein Air Raid-Spiel für satte 31.600 Dollar (23.186 Euro) an einen Bieter ging. Gut, es handelt sich um eine sehr rare Version, da es sich um einen gehackten Code handelt, der zu größten Teilen aus einem anderen alten Atarispiel, Space Jockey, stammt. Google is in the midst of crafting its own tablet to take on the iPad, a leak late Sunday may have revealed. CEO Eric Schmidt at a recent Los Angeles party purportedly told those gathered that the company is working on an Android tablet. Most of its details weren't mentioned, but it would be both an e-reader and a general computing device. The NYT heard that Google is talking with "a few publishers" for licensing books and periodicals.

Apple to drop support for 1st gen iPhone
Filed under: iPhoneYou could see the writing on the wall when Apple announced iPhone OS 4. Apple said most of the features will run on the iPhone 3G, and all would run on the iPhone 3GS. At no point did they mention the first generation iPhone. Steve Jobs has now confirmed what many assumed.
MacStories has published an email a reader sent to Jobs asking if Apple will supply updates to the first gen iPhone in the future. Steve's answer? "Sorry, no." So unless Apple releases another minor point upgrade to iPhone OS 3 before OS 4's release, original iPhone owners can expect to be running iPhone OS 3.1.3 for as long as they keep the device.

Apple's launch of the iAd platform last week was a welcome boost to Google's buyout of AdMob, Google chief Eric Schmidt admitted Sunday. Apple's creation of its own potentially major ad system has legitimized the existence of a "highly competitive market" and would make it more likely that the FTC approves the AdMob deal. Der Twitter-Blog verrät, dass Tweetie2 künftig Twitter for iPhone heißen und kostenlos angeboten werden soll - bislang gab es eine Paid und eine Free App-Version. Der Entwickler von Tweetie, Loren Bichter, wechselt zu Twitter. Eine Twitter-eigene App für BlackBerry gibt es bereits seit kurzem, nun also auch die "original" iPhone App von Twitter.

WebKit2: Neues Web-Framework mit Prozess-Sandboxing in Arbeit

Adobe-Manager wütend über neue iPhone-OS-Lizenzbedingungen
Lee Brimelow, Platform Evangelist für Flash, Flex und AIR bei Adobe, hat in einem Blogbeitrag Apple für die kürzlich verschärften iPhone-OS-Lizenzbedingungen heftig kritisiert. Anwendungen für den App Store danach auszuwählen, welche Programmiersprache für ihre Erstellung ursprünglich benutzt wurde, nennt Brimelow einen "erschreckenden Schritt", der sich rational nicht anders begründen lasse, als dass Apple "tyrannische Kontrolle" über Entwickler ausüben wolle. Wie Mac Rumors berichtet, wird Apple mit iPhone OS 4 die Verwaltungsfunktion von Apps deutlich verändern. GeoHot jailbreakt iPad erfolgreich
Hacker George Hotz a.k.a. GeoHot verkündet stolz in seinem Blog, dass er einen Weg gefunden hat das aktuelle iPad mit OS 3.2 via hauseigenem Tool blackra1n zu jailbreaken. Bei einem iPad dürfte der Jailbreak deswegen so wichtig sein, weil die Möglichkeiten weitaus größer und interessanter einzuschätzen sind als noch beim iPhone, da nun wesentlich mehr Rechenleistung und Bildschirmfläche für kreative Apps zur Verfügung stehen, die Apple jedoch niemals in den Store lassen würde. Ein Update des Tools dürfte in den nächsten Tagen erscheinen.

Panasonic took an uncommon turn in its pro video cam lineup tonight by launching the first-ever Micro Four Thirds camcorder. The AG-AF100 uses the mirrorless capturing but SLR-sized sensor to shoot 1080p30 video with the same depth of field and wide angles as a 35mm film camera but in a much smaller size than either film or most digital cameras. A first week with the iPad
Filed under: iPadHow has week #1 with the iPad been? Pretty good actually. I wasn't going to get one, but while on a TUAW assignment to get some photos and kinda sorta held up my hand and did the deed.
I'm glad I did. It's now a constant companion. I actually prefer surfing the web with it over my laptop because it is small, weighs less, and is quite speedy. I haven't seen any of the wireless issues some are reporting. Mail is good, but I can't wait for that unified inbox coming this fall.

Meizu 's iPad clone to pack 1080p, 12-hour battery
Meizu CEO Jack Wong on Sunday posted some of the first details of his company's iPad clone, the mBook. The tablet will be slightly smaller than its Apple counterpart at 8.4 inches but should play 1080p and officially last longer on battery at 12 hours. He promised the same 1024x768 resolution and capacitive touch as the iPad but noted it would have an HDMI output to show HD video at full size.

Dashboard iPad app rejected by Apple, made open source instead
So you spend hours and hours toiling away on an app that adds some much-needed Dashboard-like functionality to the iPad (sort of, more on that later) only to have it rejected by Apple -- what do you do? If you're Hongrich, developer of the slightly problematically-named "Dashboard" app, you make it open source. Of course, you'll have to be a developer yourself to actually try out the app, and it's not exactly the full-fledged Dashboard that many have been hoping for, but rather a standalone app that simply lets you run and arrange widgets however you like. Aceeca's PDA32 keeps the PalmOS dream alive
We'd heard earlier this year that Aceeca would be sticking with PalmOS for at least a few more devices, and it looks like those hopes have now finally become a reality in the form of the company's PDA32 device. RIM buys QNX, talks in-car infotainment, 'intelligent peripherals'
RIM buying a relatively unknown company for an undisclosed sum may not ordinarily be the most exciting of the developments, but the company's acquisition of Ottawa-based QNX Software Systems does certainly raise some interesting questions, at least some of which RIM is actually answering. According to co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, RIM is buying QNX at least in part to "further integrate and enhance the user experience between smartphones and in-vehicle audio and infotainment systems," adding that the company will also "bring other value to RIM in terms of supporting certain unannounced product plans for intelligent peripherals." Lazaridis didn't get much more specific than that, but the notion of "intelligent peripherals" does offer quite a bit of food for thought, as does QNX'

SanDisk calls it: Microsoft Pink being announced on Monday
Good secrets are hard to keep, and it looks like at least one of Microsoft's trusted partners has spilled the beans on the company's big announce for Monday. SanDisk used the occasion -- the unannounced occasion, that is -- to let some members of the press know today that Microsoft's Pink devices will be compatible with its line of microSD cards. That seems like a pretty lame way to ride on the coattails of a big hardware launch, but then again, when your most exciting products are nondescript pieces of plastic half the size of a postage stamp, how else are you going to make the news?

Microsoft Pink device spotted in the wild, likely 'Turtle'
There's not much too this -- and we'd like to apologize on behalf of the uploader for the choice of music and transitions -- but it looks like someone has managed to score a shot of a Pink device tethered up to a lappie in a coffee shop. From what we've seen leaked in the past, we're figuring this is the smaller model known as "Turtle" internally with a portrait QWERTY slide; it's a funny-looking little beast, isn't it? It's half retro, half compact, and chock full of adventure. It's Olympus' PEN E-PL1, and it's the first Micro Four Thirds camera from the company to boast an MSRP that you aren't terrified to tell your friends about. We've spent some quality time with one here over the past month or so, and aside from a few minor quirks, we were fairly pleased with the overall package. But let's be frank -- that's absolutely not why you're here. You're here to tell us how you'd change things if given the chance, and how you'd differentiate the E-PL1 from all those wannabes that seem to crop up every other month. Bump the megapixels? Firefox Lorentz beta doesn't crash entirely when plug-ins get fussy
Admit it, your love for Firefox is tempered by sometimes sluggish performance and a penchant for perennial plugin crashes. Google did what it could with Chrome to isolate such issues by ensuring the entire browser didn't crash when Flash (or any other add-on, for that matter) went belly up. Now it looks like the gang at Mozilla are adopting a similar tactic, and if you want to try it out for yourself, the Lorentz beta is now available for download. So sayeth the site, "If a plugin crashes or freezes, it will not affect the rest of Firefox. You will be able to reload the page to restart the plugin and try again." Whodathunk we'd ever feel actual elation at such a proclamation?

Steve Jobs responds directly to developer over new iPhone SDK rules, cites blog for explanation
Plenty ink has already been spilled about the new restrictions in clause 3.3.1 of the new iPhone SDK terms of use. The new wording disallows developers to use third party, cross platform development tools (like Flash CS5) to build their apps, and plenty of folks (like Adobe) are angered by it. Now it seems Steve Jobs has chimed in as well. Developer Greg Slepak reached out to Steve, citing the large outpouring of negativity on the topic, including a post by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who Greg calls Apple's "biggest fan." MacBook Pro updates almost upon us? Screenshot of new model numbers offers hope
It seems silly to give up all expectation for a MacBook Pro refresh. After all, isn't a spec bump for Apple's flagship laptops a total inevitability? Still, the arduous wait has begun shake our faith, and we're happy to see even this sliver of evidence to snap us from our stupor. Flip Slide HD caught outside the box, still looks weird
Maybe it's just the odd angle of this newly submitted out-of-box photograph, or maybe we just aren't smart enough for Cisco, but we still we can't quite figure out what exactly is going on here. We suppose the flip-up screen performs as a sort of poor man's photo frame? Kobo's $149 eReader gets reviewed
So, how much e-book reader can $149 get you? Well, Kobo's eReader might not be heavy on the feature set, but based on the general impressions from Electronista's review, we'd say quite a bit. In exchange for dropping the 3G, WiFi, color screen and audio playback frills of the Kindle and Nook, Kobo's barebones device puts a pretty and intuitive face on simple book reading for a pretty lovable price. The biggest complaint hinges around some slow performance when closing and opening books, but with 100 pre-loaded titles and a fairly budget friendly online library, it seems like the device has you covered when it comes to actually reading things. We don't really know why Apple wouldn't have mentioned iChat at its "tentpole"-filled keynote if it was all ready to go on it, but the eternal optimists within us would like to believe that the merest glimpse of the app would instantly reveal a front facing camera on whatever new iPhone hardware is in the works, therefore relegating the app to secrecy. We swear we've seen a Motorola phone that looks like this odd square thing before, but it's also possible we're crazy. Samsung Galaxy S hits the FCC with AT&T bands onboard
It wasn't even a week ago that we deduced the eventual launch of Samsung's Galaxy S Android phone on AT&T, and now here we are looking at FCC documents confirming Ma Bell's favorite frequencies. Microsoft Pink livestream page offers glimpse of Turtle, Pink name changing at launch
