Illusion Labs shows off multitouch 'Touchgrind' gaming demo on a MacBook
One of our favorite iPhone games is Touchgrind. Sure, we're terrible at it, but at least we feel like we're accomplishing something "totally street" and "badass" with the multitouch input that the iPhone allows. Well, Illusion Labs is looking at bringing some of that magic to the Mac. They've got a demo up of the game running in a jumbo manner on a multi-finger-friendly MacBook. It looks pretty much like a straight port at this point, but hopefully the added horsepower and screen size of the Mac can make this into something a bit more magical -- and maybe even trick us into thinking we're decent fingerboardists, if only for a moment. Motorola tries to block BlackBerry in patent dispute
Motorola this afternoon filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission accusing the BlackBerry's creator, Research in Motion, of violating five of its patents. The Droid maker claims that the BlackBerry line copies Motorola technology for app and power management, user interfaces and Wi-Fi. Senior VP of IP law Jonathan Meyer also claims that RIM has been using "delay tactics" in an ongoing patent lawsuit and refusing to change its phones or their software to avoid the dispute.

Palm's Pre Plus and Pixi Plus slipping into Best Buy locales everywhere
Officially speaking, the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus still have a weekend ahead of 'em before they can be sold, but if you know the right person in your local Best Buy, you could very well be playing with one hours before your contemporaries. An anonymous tipster beamed over the image you see above via our handy iPhone app, noting that both of Palm's first entries onto Verizon's network were in stock. Granted, neither are for sale per se, but what's stopping you from moseying on down and giving it a shot? Nothing, that's what.

Motorola asks ITC to ban BlackBerry imports
It's been a hell of a year for Motorola, but one thing's stayed the same: the company still thinks RIM is ripping off some of its patents. At least that's the sense we're getting from a new complaint Moto's just filed with the International Trade Commission alleging the BlackBerry crew is infringing five patents on "early-stage innovations" that range across WiFi, app management, UI, and power management. As per usual with ITC complaints, Motorola's asking for a ban on RIM imports -- we'd imagine a cross-complaint from RIM barring Motor

Briefly: US Army enters App Store, Toon Boom changes prices
The US Army has launched an official app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The title lets users access news, images and videos from the Army website. Users also have the ability to save stories for offline viewing, and spread them to friends via e-mail, Twitter or Facebook. In addition to news and media the app includes a tile-based strategy game, and information on ranks, equipment, uniforms and the Army song.

Apple to open Frankfurt Apple Store on January 22nd
Apple will open a new store in Frankfurt, Germany this Saturday, January 22nd. The shop is located at 30 Große Bockenheimer Straße, and will launch at 11AM local time. Regular hours will run from 10AM to 8PM Monday through Wednesday, and extend to 9PM Thursday through Saturday. The first workshops are scheduled for next Monday, focusing on iMovie, iDVD and GarageBand.

duaLink cable charges two iPhones on one USB port, no problem
The duaLink cable for iPod and iPhone contains its own miniature USB hub, a single USB connector on one end, and two iPod connectors on the other end. If the promise of charging and / or syncing multiple devices from the same USB port hasn't blown your mind, the company has been thoughtful enough to place the whole shebang in a housing that seems to be a little more durable than the (admittedly not so durable) stock Apple cable. Super Talent outs 250MB/sec, long-lived SSDs
Super Talent late Thursday rolled out a new class of solid-state drive for itself that it expects will help those with very high workloads. The TeraDrive FT2 runs on a new, high-speed controller from SandForce that will not only deliver peak read speeds of 250MB per second but do so for its lifetime. ASUS developing slate prototypes, mulling smartbooks
ASUS chairman Jonney Shih revealed the future plans of the company in a recent interview, predicting that the pioneer of the netbook category will continue with its success. Among the revelations to Silicon was that the company is developing slate PCs meant for multimedia consumption and web use, but is holding off from releasing them as Shih feels content needs to be more readily accessible before the devices can be successful. This includes more e-book stores, music, videos and games created just for the devices.

New MAXPower card adds dual eSATA to Mac Pros
NewerTech has begun shipping a new controller card, the MAXPower eSATA 6G PCIe 2.0. The peripheral is designed with Mac Pros and PCs in mind, and uses one PCIe slot to add two SATA ports to a system, each rated at 6Gbps. Installation is driverless, meaning that the controller need only be plugged in to be detected.

Microsoft may not be paying Win Mobile developers
Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile could be denying app developers large amounts of money through flaws in its payment system. In a series of complaints at its official forum, producers have said they have been denied 'thousands' of dollars in revenue from their apps, even for ones released when Windows Marketplace launched in October. The missing payouts come even for those who were listed as eligible for quick payment, some of whom had to make changes to their accounts to qualify.

Improv Electronics Boogie Board brings the chalkboard into the 21st century
When we hear "paperless LCD writing tablet" our mind starts racing, but unfortunately the new "Boogie Board" tablet from Improv Electronics is more of an update of the chalkboard than anything. The unit is based on a power-free reflective LCD technology (similar to the technology in Fujitsu's Flepia readers), with 50,000 erase cycles, and you can draw on it with anything that can apply pressure (stylus, finger nail, blunt trauma). Unfortunately, it ends there. There's no connection back to a computer. Steve Ballmer gibt Autogramm - auf MacBook Pro
Steve Ballmer macht aus seiner beruflich geprägten Abneigung gegen alle Produkte aus dem Hause Apple keinen Hehl. So hat er einem Microsoft-Angestellten schon ein iPhone entrissen und angedeutet, dieses gleich mit seinem Schuh in tausend Stücke zu zerschmettern.
Geradezu verwunderlich ist daher seine Reaktion auf die Bitte eines jungen Mannes dessen MacBook Pro zu signieren.
Ohne auch nur eine abfällige Bemerkung nahm Ballmer den Stift und verewigte sich auf dem Gerät.

LG eXpo Mobile Projector hands-on
As Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets go, LG's eXpo on AT&T is very near the cream of the crop -- it's got Snapdragon and a biometric scanner, after all -- but we all know that the spec sheet doesn't tell the whole story with this one. Really, people care about this phone because of the trick $179 pico projector that you can optionally bolt underneath. Besides being insanely cool, the concept makes sense considering the eXpo's target demographic -- business users probably want to be able to share documents and PowerPoints on the go, right?

Asimo stars in Living With Robots, promises not to forget the 'little people' (video)
When we saw Asimo do his Fred Astaire act a while back we knew he had star quality -- and now it looks like the feisty robot is finally getting his big break. Living With Robots, which just premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was directed by Joe Berlinger (who directed Metallica's Some Kind of Monster) and tells the story of a humanoid robot that gets stranded at home while his family flies overseas for Christmas. Android 7X more popular than iPhone for free ringtones
Myxer in a study today revealed that users of Android, and most other smartphone platforms, are much more likely to look for free ringtones and wallpapers than iPhone owners. Of all the downloads in the fall, the combined Android platform resulted in seven times more downloads than for Apple's lineup. Visits to the website were also three times higher as Android users make up about 12 percent of all traffic.

Analysts change up estimates ahead of Q1 2010 results
Several analysis firms have published new memos on Apple today, which represents the last full weekday before Apple will announce its first-quarter financial results. The most radical note appears to have come from Deutsche Bank, which has removed Apple from its short-term Buy list. BMO Capital by contrast has raised its price target from $245 to $250, repeating an Outperform rating.

Sony waterproof point and shoot splashing onto the scene soon?
Sony Insider's got a source who has tipped them off on to a new Sony point-and-shoot, the DSC-TX5. This one looks to be a super thin and stylish affair, capable of underwater shooting, with a touchscreen, and the Exmor CMOS system. It will probably boast a 10 megapixel sensor, and the source didn't have any other specs for this bad boy, but it looks pretty delicious to us. DiskStation DS1010+ handles five-bay NAS
Synology has launched the DiskStation DS1010+, a new network-area storage system. The unit has five SATA/SSD drive bays by default, and is intended mainly for small- or medium-sized businesses. It can be scaled to use up to 3GB of RAM however, and as many as 10 bays via the DX510, due in March. Adding the 510 should double peak storage to 20TB.

Stanford develops wearable batteries for electronics
Stanford University is continuing its research into organic batteries, this time applying its technology to wearable textiles. The researchers have turned regular cotton and polyester into electronic textiles, paving the way for jeans or t-shirts that can charge cellphones or portable music players. InstaPaper's "read later" bookmarking service was already a pretty handy way to get any article or web page onto your Kindle, but it looks like the company's now taken a considerable leap forward in usability with its latest update. Nothing's changed in the way you actually get articles onto the Kindle (via wireless delivery or .mobi files), but once they're loaded up you'll now have a decidedly more Kindle-like experience. Tesla pulls in $465 million government loan to build Model S electric sedan
The Detroit News is reporting that Tesla has closed on a $465 million low-cost loans from the Energy Department to work on its next electric vehicle, the Model S sedan.The funds will apparently be used by the company to build manufacturing plants in California. The loan, which closed on Monday and was approved back in June, will come from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program, which has about $25 billion to dole out to automakers manufacturing energy efficient vehicles. Telefonica rumored buying Telecom Italia
Italian newspaper la Repubblica stirred talk of a shift in the phone world on Friday with a claim that Telefonica would soon place a bid for Telecom Italia (TIM). Tablet may be worth $2.8 billion yearly, says analyst
As a "base case," Apple could sell 5 million tablets in the product's first year, generating $2.8 billion in revenue, according to RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. The analyst's scenario assumes a $600 retail cost, and a 30 percent gross margin; given this, however, the tablet could add 30 cents to EPS, and by extension an extra $5 to $10 per share in valuation. iLounge today posts some new tablet details:
The first tidbit is that the tablet will have dual 30-pin dock connectors to allow docking in portrait and landscape mode. Good for watching video!
Next, iLounge says that the back is aluminum and has a long black stripe of plastic so the antenna signal isn't blocked. Sound familiar?
They go on to talk prices and subsidies offered by carries since it will likely have a 3G radio. The thought of another carrier plan is just too depressing to talk about.

Apple dealing with key education publishers for tablet dream
A fresh report once again confirms Apple to be in talks with key educational publishers with a view to inking content deals for the soon-to-ship Apple tablet.
“Apple (AAPL) is in talks with the McGraw-Hill Companies, HarperCollins Publishers and Hachette Book Group to include educational and trade titles on its planned tablet computer, according to people familiar with the negotiations,” states Businessweek.
“McGraw-Hill Education, the third largest educational publisher in the U.S. by sales, is discussing getting electronic textbooks and parts of its online learning system onto the tablet, say two people. MacBook Air upgrade speculation starts to trickle in (updated)
Somewhere on the Apple product matrix future roadmap sits a MacBook Air upgrade - but the MacBook and MacBook Pro machines may see themselves upgraded before the Air gets beefed-up, speculates Hardmac this morning.
The website notes that “most computer manufacturers have already announced and/or released their Intel Core i3/i5-based notebook models,” pointing out that Apple still offers Core 2 Duo-based machines, citing the situation as proof of the next claim that the computer company, “will most likely quickly move on to the new Intel mobile platform.”

At least one test says the iPhone soft keyboard is fast enough
Since the day the iPhone was introduced critics have slammed the Apple device for its lack of a QWERTY keyboard - but the iPhone’s soft keyboard may still be an improvement on alternatives in the mobile device space.
Now, we’re not saying this is scientific, but website designer, programmer and manager, Phil Gyford, took little time to run a typing test on a number of devices - and found the iPhone to be more effective than those fiddly mini-QWERTY physical mobile keyboards.

We've gotta say: after witnessing the ASUS press event at CES this year, we have a whole new love for the company and its outspoken Chairman, Jonney "megatrend" Shih. The man, myth, legend recently sat down with Silicon.com and talked a bit about his own brand of the future. Apparently ASUS has slate PC prototypes in its labs, along with netbooks running Android and Chrome OS, but there's nothing he's convinced is ready for market yet. New MacBook Air delayed by ULV Core i5 shipments?
An update to Apple's MacBook Air may be pushed back several weeks due to delays in the ultra-low voltage Core i5 needed to drive it, rumors circulating today suggest. Rekordverdächtige 35TB Speicherkapazität sollen auf 800 Meter lange Band passen, was 44 mal mehr ist, als bislang möglich. Das Band besetht aus einem Magnetmaterial auf Barium Ferrit-Basis. Apple is currently speaking with McGraw-Hill and the Hachette Book Group about bringing various trade and educational books to its upcoming tablet, say sources claiming to be familiar with the talks. Sony Ericsson ships more phones, stems losses
Sony Ericsson on Friday reported continued but slow recovery in the last quarter of 2009. It saw a second straight increase in the number of phones it shipped, pushing 14.6 million phones versus 14.1 in the summer. PGP Whole Disk 10: Komplett-Verschlüsselung auch für Boot-Camp-Partition
PGP hat eine neue Version seiner Verschlüssellungssoftware PGP Whole Disk Encryption Desktop veröffentlicht. Nach dem Update lässt sich auch die Boot-Camp-Partition eines Macs verschlüsseln.

TSMC kann Strukturbreite von Grafikchips weiter reduzieren

At least one test says the iPhone soft keyboard is fast enough
Since the day the iPhone was introduced critics have slammed the Apple device for its lack of a QWERTY keyboard - but the iPhone’s soft keyboard may still be an improvement on alternatives in the mobile device space.
Now, we’re not saying this is scientific, but website designer, programmer and manager, Phil Gyford, took little time to run a typing test on a number of devices - and found the iPhone to be more effective than those fiddly mini-QWERTY physical mobile keyboards.

Sony Ericsson meldet 167 Millionen Euro Quartalsverlust
Sony Ericsson steckt weiterhin in den roten Zahlen. Wie aus der heute vorgelegten Bilanz für das vierte Quartal 2009 hervorgeht, verzeichnete das japanisch-schwedische Joint Venture zwischen Oktober und Dezember einen Fehlbetrag von 167 Millionen Euro. Nach Youtube hat auch Vimeo angekündigt, sein Angebot auf HTML-5-Video umzustellen. Seit gestern steht Nutzern bei einigen Filmen eine Option zur Verfügung, Videos ohne Adobes Flash-Plug-in abzuspielen. Microsoft may show Win Mobile 6.6, date 7 at MWC
Microsoft is slated to talk about two versions of Windows Mobile at Mobile World Congress next month, those reputedly aware of the timetable said on Friday. Beyond releasing the interim Windows Mobile 6.6, which could add not just touch-ready buttons but support for capacitive touch, Microsoft would also set a date for when Windows Mobile 7 would be widely available. Wider availability would start in September and could result in many phones shipping that fall.

Rumour: MacBook Air upgrade speculation
Somewhere on the Apple product matrix future roadmap sits a MacBook Air upgrade - but the MacBook and MacBook Pro machines may see themselves upgraded before the Air gets beefed-up, speculates Hardmac this morning.
The website notes that “most computer manufacturers have already announced and/or released their Intel Core i3/i5-based notebook models,” pointing out that Apple still offers Core 2 Duo-based machines, citing the situation as proof of the next claim that the computer company, “will most likely quickly move on to the new Intel mobile platform.”
However, MacBook Air uses a low-voltage version of the Intel mobile chip, a processor variant the site claims hasn’t yet been made available in good quantity by Intel. However, this may soon change.

Facebook baut energieeffizientes Rechenzentrum
Facebook hat den ersten Spatenstich für den Bau eines eigenen Rechenzentrums gemacht. Das Gebäude wird in Prineville im US-Bundesstaat Oregon errichtet und soll energieeffiziente Technologien nutzen. Google devs reveal Chrome OS will have media player
If you thought Chrome OS was all about the Chrome, here are some words of reassurance from Google's Matthew Papakipos, engineering director for the project. Das iPhone App (iTunes Store Link) verspricht in 96% der Fälle Recht zu haben und identifizieren zu können ob das Baby nun spielen will, Hunger hat, einfach nur geknuddelt werden möchte, oder was sonst noch so in der Babyseele schieflaufen könnte. Sicherlich auch gut investierte 23,99 Euro wenn man junge Mütter im Supermarkt beeindrucken möchte. Bei großen Kindern hilft es allerdings nicht, dafür aber weltweit.

Wie es scheint hat Apple den Namen des kommenden Tablet unweigerlich verraten.
Nachdem iSlate und iGuide im Gespräch waren - beide von unserer Redaktion als eher unglaubwürdig eingestuft - hat der Name “iPad” nun im Internet ebenfalls einen Platz gefunden.
Spannend ist dabei, dass Apple in kürzester Zeit weltweit die Rechte für diesen Namen sicherte. Von China über England bis… ja, bis zu den USA. Denn dort ist das Problem:

Apple dealing with key education publishers for tablet dream
A fresh report once again confirms Apple to be in talks with key educational publishers with a view to inking content deals for the soon-to-ship Apple tablet.
“Apple (AAPL) is in talks with the McGraw-Hill Companies, HarperCollins Publishers and Hachette Book Group to include educational and trade titles on its planned tablet computer, according to people familiar with the negotiations,” states Business Week.
“McGraw-Hill Education, the third largest educational publisher in the U.S. by sales, is discussing getting electronic textbooks and parts of its online learning system onto the tablet, say two people. British electronics e-tailer Clove has started listing a new £53 ($86) HD2 accessory that should be of interest to everyone who owns or plans on owning the device. We always thought that generous 4.3-inch screen could do with some backside support, and indeed the new kickstand-equipped extended battery will provide just that. Steampunk Eye-Pod holt Innereien aus dem iPod

Inspririert von Frankenstein soll man den Steampunk "eye-Pod" als Armband tragen können oder auf sein modisch passendes Dock stellen, und sanft über das Auge streichen um damit Musik zu hören. Internet Explorer gefixt: schleunigst IE 5.01 Upadaten

Ihr erinnert euch alle an das kleine Loch in nahezu allen Internet Explorer Versionen (ausgenommen 5.0), der Google in China so ein Problem gemacht hat? Dafür gibt es jetzt endlich einen Fix. Und diesmal wirklich für alle Versionen zwischen 5.01 und IE 8. Das seit letztem Herbst bekannte Problem hätte eigentlich erst im Februar gefixt werden sollen, aber nachdem zwei Menschenrechtler in China dadurch ins Visir gerieten war der Druck auf Microsoft doch etwas größer. Jetzt also schnell updaten, oder einfach Browser wie Firefox, Chrome oder Opera installieren.

AMD meldet ersten Quartalsgewinn seit drei Jahren
AMD hat im vierten Fiskalquartal 2009 (bis 26. Dezember) einen Profit von 1,18 Milliarden Dollar oder 1,52 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Seit Anfang Dezember ist mit dem "SAP BusinessObjects Explorer" eine iPhone App verfügbar, welche zentrale Teile der Business Intelligence (BI)-Funktionaliät des Business Objects Explorers auch auf dieser Plattform bereitstellt. Das mobile Angebot ist laut SAP vorläufig noch iPhone-exklusiv - eine Version für BlackBerry sei derzeit nicht geplant. Die Entscheidung zugunsten des iPhone fiel aufgrund der grafischen Fähigkeiten, der guten Performance und der steigenden Akzeptanz im Business-Segement. Die App ist kostenlos, setzt aber natürlich das Vorhandensein u.a. des SAP Business Warehouse voraus. Sie soll eine einfache und schnelle Suche in Datensätzen ermöglichen, indem sie den Zugriff auf den Datenbank-Server herstellt. Dabei funktioniert die App genauso wie der "große" BusinessObjects Explorer, indem auf einen gewünschten Datensatz zugegriffen wird, der sich im Arbeitsspeicher des SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse Accelerator (SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator) befindet.

Am vergangenen Abend erhielten wir die E-Mail, dass unser Update von MTN Mobil "ready for sale" ist, das Programm also durch den Prüfprozess kam. Über den mobilen AppStore wurde man ebenfalls benachrichtigt, eine neue Version stehe zur Verfügung, im iTunes Store erschien die aktualisierte Produktseite mit Update-Beschreibung. What's this? Another Google ad heralding the imminent launch of a gadget desirable? We're guessing yes just as those Apple ads preemptively signaled the launch of refreshed Macs and new Mighty Mouse. Engadget reader Geoff spotted the YouTube ad above that clearly shows the Nexus One Dock being available and for "only $45!" For that tidy tithe you'll get a charged phone and the ability to kick off a slideshow -- presumably the "and more" refers to Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and AV tethering we saw in the FCC filing. Der Axel Springer-Verlag meldet Erfolge für seine kostenpflichtigen News-Apps für das iPhone: Einen Monat nach Einführung der BILD- und WELT-Apps seien diese bereits über 100.000 mal kostenpflichtig geladen worden. Gleichzeitig sollen die ersten Updateversionen, die seit kurzem Tagen im App-Store zur Verfügung stehen, die von den Nutzern geforderten technischen Optimierungen und Stabilisierungen für die beiden Mobilangebote bringen. Eine weitere Update-Version sei bereits in Arbeit - bis zu deren Launch wird der Testzeitraum der Einstiegsangebote verlängert. Auf den einschlägigen Plattformen kursieren allerdings bereits gehackte und somit kostenfreie Versionen der BILD-App, gewissermaßen auch ein Indiz für die Beliebtheit des Angebots.

With the number of mobile phones having a true internet access and multi-function system, some people resurrect some old hack to get money on their bank account by stealing it from mobile phone users. Imagine while using one of your favorite applications on your iPhone or mobile phones, the usual ads banner displays a attracting claims/photo, so you just click on it to have a look. It could be a very bad idea, especially if the ads is managed by AdMob. Indeed, several security expert have found dialer viruses hidden in some ads managed by AdMob. By clicking on this banner, your mobile phone suddenly switches to the calling interface and dials typically an international call (at a very high price rate). New Future for FED Display Technology
In 2007, Sony unveiled a new technology allowing the production of a new generation of flat panel display: the FED.
Very promising on paper and from specification, this technology was offering the power consumption from LCD display associated with the thickness and responsiveness of the plasma display, each pixel being its own electron emitter. Unfortunately, due to the lack of resources and partners, Sony dropped its development in 2009.
This technology might resurrect with AU Optronics, a display manufacturer, that announced to have purchased the FED technology and associated patents from Sony. So, with its huge financial resources, this manufacturer might give a second life to the FED, and maybe in couple of years, it will be the default technology.

The Macbook Air to Be Updated After the MacBook and MacBook Pro?
While most computer manufacturers have already announced and/or released their Intel Core i3/i5-based notebook models, Apple is still offering Core 2 Duo-based units and will most likely quickly move on to the new Intel mobile platform. According to the last rumors, the MacBook Air might not be updated in a very near future with either Core i3/i5 has it uses Low Voltage version of the Intel mobile CPUs. Such processors are not fully ready/available and Apple will have to delay the update of the MacBook Air by couple of weeks. It is still possible that Intel ships first samples to Apple, in small quantities, at a premium price. It is true that the MacBook Air does not look really sexy anymore when compared to the MacBook Pro 13.3" maybe not for long.

Firmware 1.5 for the OCZ SSD
OCZ offers a new firmware update for its SSD Agility and Vertex (except Turbo). The update 1.5 applies to the disks that were already running 1.4 or 1.4.1 and supports simultaneously Garbage collector and the TRIM (see here for the explanations). Garbage collector would be also more aggressive, and the parameters of Wear-leveling adjusted.Although it does not erase the data of the disks, we strongly suggest that you make a backup before the update. It is applied in a traditional way, downloading and then burning a freedos image on a CD; it is then necessary to restart and to follow the instructions. Apple rushing tablet talks with AT&T and Verizon?
Apple has two US carriers in mind for its rumored tablet but is even now still negotiating deals, a late leak says. Insiders at AT&T and Verizon alike tell Fox News that they're both discussing terms to supply 3G for the device but that neither deal has been finalized with less than a week left before the unveiling. Versions have been developed for data on both AT&T's HSPA and Verizon's EVDO, however, and would likely use free Wi-Fi hotspot service from their respective carriers.

There was a mini-internet revolt the last time NBC Universal's TV chief started talking about ways to actually turn a profit from Hulu and the search for a balance continues. By my last count, I regularly carry as many as five different devices in my bag, with lots of overlapping functions. But I seldom want to carry more than two, and one of those is always going to be a phone. As good as today's phones are, however, I'm still left wanting. Spotify has reportedly developed a revenue model that Universal Music Group International considers to be "sustainable," the music label's senior VP Rob Wells told Telegraph. Opinion: Apple's tablet will be a breakthrough convergence device
At the introduction of the iPhone, Steve Jobs touted that new device as a "Widescreen iPod", "Revolutionary Mobile Phone" and "Breakthrough Internet Communications Device".
I believe the same type of convergence thinking is going into the tablet. It can't just be a "Kindle-killer" eBook reader. It can't just be a "Media Pad". It can't be a Nintendo DS or PSP competitor. Amazon in a support document for publishers using its Digital Text Platform has revealed that it will let those selling Kindle books shed the copy protection. 18% likely to buy Apple tablet, PC sales at new high
A new study today reveals that nearly a fifth of buyers would like to buy Apple's rumored tablet if and when it ships. Even without knowing its features or price, about 18 percent of ChangeWave's January panel say they're either "likely" (14 percent) or "very likely" (4 percent) to buy the touchscreen hardware. The demand is on par with what was seen when the researchers asked about a then-upcoming Intel Mac in August 2005 and, while very likely to change, potentially hints at substantial pent-up demand.
