Editorial: 10 outdated elements of desktop operating systems
We've come so very far in the way computer operating systems treat us, and in the way we treat those computer operating systems. They multitask, they animate, they reach into the internet and pull down our favorite parts, they rarely crash and they're always on. It's a far cry from a decade ago, but I think we could go so much further. The advent of the cheap, ubiquitous touchscreen, always-available internet and continually cheaper and more powerful hardware has revolutionized the phone industry, and I think it can also help the desktops and laptops we know and love do more for us. But a laptop isn't a phone: we're supposed to get a lot done on it, under some unrealistic deadlines, and some random company with big ideas can't c

AMD-Prozessor mit 4x 3,6 GHz in Kürze?
Nachdem der AMD Phenom II X4 965 Anfang November 2009 in einer neuen Variante mit einer TDP von 125 statt bisher 140 Watt an den Start ging, wurden schnell Gerüchte laut, dass man doch einen Prozessor mit einer 200 MHz höheren Taktfrequenz und der „alten“ TDP bringen könnte. Diesen Gerüchten wird aktuell ein wenig mehr Halt gegeben.

iLounge has some double-confirmed tablet news: Twin Dock Connectors, a Big Antenna Panel
iLounge today posts some new tablet details:
The first tidbit is that the tablet will have dual 30-pin dock connectors to allow docking in portrait and landscape mode. Good for watching video!
Next, iLounge says that the back is aluminum and has a long black stripe of plastic so the antenna signal isn't blocked. They go on to talk prices and subsidies offered by carries since it will likely have a 3G radio.
Is this thing really going to be a big iPhone?

Project X 2.0 adds Flow, Mail views, web app
Marware has launched an update of its project management software, Project X 2.0. The app uses a task-based organization scheme, and has 55 preset progress reports for expenses, costs, incomes and resource allocation. It can also track subprojects, and create milestone goals that help measure advancement.

Recent PS3 updates prompt more complaints of console failures
Well, we heard a raft of complaints of Blu-ray drive failures and other issues when Sony rolled out the 3.0 and 3.1 firmware updates for the PlayStation 3, and it looks like things may have taken another turn for the worse with the recent 3.10 and 3.15 updates. While it's a bit early to call things widespread, some forums are once again starting to heat up with reports of various problems that mostly seem to have occurred after the 3.15 update rolled out last month -- although some folks also seem to have had trouble with the earlier 3.10 update. Apple refurbs: iPod touch, Nano and more
Apple's online store today has a wide range of iPod models available in refurbished condition like the 2nd gen. 16GB iPod touch, which is now $199 after a $50 price cut. Toronto school board switches from Macs to PCs
A decision of the Toronto District School Board to switch from Macs to PCs is proving controversial, reports say. The changeover was first announced on November 13th, and has since been explained as happening because a PC can be bought for less than the cost of an equivalent Mac; PCs are further described as having cheaper and easier automatic maintenance. USB forum buys up ExpressCard, PC Card assets
The USB Implementers Forum this afternoon said it would buy the assets of the PCMCIA group. The deal gives the USB-IF control over testing, developing and managing all of the removable notebook card formats that the PCMCIA controls, including ExpressCard as well as the legacy CardBus and PC Card formats. Officials hope the move will simplify certifying devices and doesn't expect it to necessarily disrupt the existing process.

Google macht fast 2 Milliarden US-Dollar Quartalsgewinn

Cisco successfully tests orbital IP router, Pirate Bay 'very interested'
It's been almost three years since Cisco and the DoD announced the IRIS project. Short for Internet Routing in Space, the idea is to route IP traffic between satellites instead of bouncing it on and off ground stations. The whole thing has moved forward steadily since we first caught wind of it, culminating with the launch of the first Cisco Space Router aboard an Atlas V rocket last November. According to The Register, the company has just finished its first in-orbit test of the thing, and -- lo' and behold -- it's a success! After some more testing by the DoD (which will go down between now and April), Cisco plans on running yet more trials. And after that? News: Wintek claims worker strike resolution
Taiwan-based Wintek, a leading supplier of touchscreen panels for a number of devices, including the iPhone, claims to have settled a dispute with striking workers that resulted in apparent chaos at one of its Chinese plants late last week. Siemens tests 500Mbps wireless
Siemens this week announced it has reached a new record in wireless data transfer speeds, beating the previous speed by a factor of 2.5. Together with the Heinrich Hertz Institute, the company was able to achieve a speed of 500Mbps thanks to white LED light. The light-emitting diode used in the test was produced by Osram, a Siemens subsidiary, and transferred data over a distance of 16.4 feet. The Ostar LED is one of the brightest LEDs on the market.

NetTalk challenges MagicJack, gets slammed by MagicJack founder
Air enough annoying late-night commercials and you're bound to attract a few imitators, and it looks like MagicJack now has its first courtesy of upstart NetTalk. Same basic idea here: buy a VoIP box (for $100, in this case), plug in your phone, and make all the long distance calls you want. Of course, MagicJack's outspoken founder Dan Borislow wasn't about it slide by without notice, and he fully lit into the company in a recent interview with Laptop Magazine. Firefox 3.6 brings Personas themes, full screen native video
Mozilla has finally released Firefox 3.6, following several months of beta testing. The latest version is based on the company's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which is claimed to be faster and more responsive while adding optimizations for mobile devices running on operating systems such as Maemo. Users can now change the browser's appearance using various Personas, which work in a similar way to Google's Chrome themes.

Tablet design to resemble original iPhone?
The impending Apple tablet will most closely resemble the original iPhone in design, say sources claiming to be familiar with the hardware. The most obvious connection is alleged to be an aluminum shell, different mainly in size, but also in being thinner proportionately. All of the standard iPhone buttons should likewise be present, including the Home button; a black border is said to separate the touchscreen from the shell.

Corsair pushes speed envelope with 2,333MHz Dominator GTX RAM modules
Corsair and speed generally run in the same circles, so it follows logic to see said memory outfit cranking out the planet's fastest Intel XMP-certified RAM. The 2,333MHz Dominator GTX now has Intel's stamp of approval, and it easily surpasses the company's 2,000MHz stuff that was king of the castle just yesterday. As the story goes, each module is "hand screened" and tested to the hilt before being shipped to end suers, which apparently explains the $200 per 2GB stick that you'll be asked to lay down. ViewSonic VPC08 MID/phone appears on video, fails to steal xpPhone's thunder
Maybe it's all the talk of the ITG xpPhone that's made ViewSonic's VPC08 come out of hiding, but the phone/MID contraption is finally making a video appearance and revealing why it's so damn thick. Unlike the xpPhone the VPC08 is actually an ordinary feature phone with a 2-inch display stuck on top of an Atom Z500-powered 4.3-inch MID. Uh, innovative? Not so much since it doesn't appear that the two work in conjunction, but we do know that the phone supports EV-DO, and that the MID portion packs 512MB RAM, an 8GB SSD with Windows XP, and WiFi. Verizon now says no piracy disconnections yet
In response to yesterday's report that telecommunications provider Verizon has cut off some people from the Internet due to illegally sharing files, a spokesperson tells BBR this hasn't happened yet. Bobbi Henson says she was misquoted, adding that while the company reserves the right to cut off heavy users or pirates, it has not done so, and that there is no bandwidth cap at Verizon.

HP Compaq AirLife 100 smartbook hits the FCC

This one looks a bit shaky. AppleInsider is saying that the tablet, which will be revealed next week, resembles a first generation iPhone. We've been duly impressed with the Dyson vacs that we've encountered in the past, but one thing's for certain: these things are large. Digital music up 12%, yet to offset CD slump
Online sales of music were up significantly in 2009 but still weren't enough to compensate for dropping CD sales, the IFPI said today in its annual overview. The revenue from Amazon, iTunes and other sources climbed 12 percent to $4.2 billion during the year, but a corresponding drop in CD sales is estimated to have made total revenues shrink by 8 to 9 percent to about $15.6 billion.

Patch für Internet Explorer schließt acht Sicherheitslöcher
Microsoft hat wie angekündigt außerhalb des monatlichen Patchday-Zyklus einen Sicherheitspatch für den Internet Explorer veröffentlicht. Damit werden gleich acht Sicherheitslecks in Microsofts Browser beseitigt. Eine der Sicherheitslücken wurden für Angriffe auf verschiedene Unternehmensnetzwerke verwendet. 3D stole the show at CES 2010
Not sure why we've been putting this off, but we'll just come right out and say it: there's no doubt that this was the year for 3D at CES. We walked the show floor for countless hours and can tell you that just about everyone was showing something related to 3D at their booths. Most of these demos required a bit of a wait to experience them (thanks, hype), and everywhere you went people were talking about 3D. Hulu mulls charging for hot or back catalog shows

Green machine - Apple looks to solar-powered iPods, iPhones
The latest Apple-related U.S. Patent and Trademark Office publishing reveals a design for a solar powered portable device (i.e. an iPod or iPhone), an improvement on a previous 2008 patent filing.
As described, such a device would host built-in rigid solar panels on its front and back with which to collect power. In the filing the entire front and rear of the device would be covered with the cells.
The system includes circuits to monitor the battery's state, choosing whether to recharge using external solar power or to store solar energy for later use.

iPhone dominates mobile web in Americas, Europe
The iPhone is increasingly taking control of the mobile web in certain continents, AdMob says in its study of the last quarter of 2009. Alongside the iPhone growing to 54 percent of all smartphone Internet traffic in North America, it now makes up more than half of all handheld traffic in Latin America (56 percent) as well as Western and Eastern Europe (78 percent and 51 percent). Apple's lead is especially high in Oceania, which centers on Australia and New Zealand, as it represents 92 percent of all mobile data.

Am Department of Engineering in Stanford hat eine Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern um Yi Cui eine Tinte entwickelt, die, zum Färben von z.B. Jeans genutzt, so feine Strom-Speichereigenschaften hat, dass man sie als Aufladegerät für Handys nutzen kann. Der Nachteil: Man darf dann demnächst zusätzlich seine Klamotten über Nacht aufladen. Der Vorteil: Man fühlt sich irgendwie elektrisiert. Waschbar bleiben die mit solcher Tinte versetzten Klamotten natürlich, und allein die Optionen für Add-Ons wie Aufladekabel lassen uns schon von einer neuen Modewelt träumen.

Bundesarbeitsgericht: Betriebsrat hat Recht auf einen Internetanschluss
Das Bundesarbeitsgericht hat jetzt eine frühere Entscheidung Landesarbeitsgerichts Berlin-Brandenburg bestätigt, wonach der Betriebsrat vom Arbeitgeber die Bereitstellung eines Internetanschlusses dann verlangen kann, wenn er bereits über einen PC verfügt, im Betrieb ein Internetanschluss vorhanden ist, die Freischaltung des Internetzugangs für den Betriebsrat keine zusätzlichen Kosten verursacht und der Internetnutzung durch den Betriebsrat keine sonstigen berechtigten Belange des Arbeitgebers entgegenstehen (Aktenzeichen 7 ABR 79/08).

Apple pushes 27-inch iMac shipments out to three weeks

YouTube experiments with HTML5 video
YouTube this morning branched out beyond just movie rentals to begin an HTML5 beta. The opt-in test avoids Flash entirely and uses the new web standard's built-in video plugin to stream H.264 video directly to the browser. Making the move simplifies video viewing and theoretically allows devices without Flash to see YouTube, or those without Flash hardware acceleration to get improved performance.

Logitech steigert Gewinn im dritten Quartal um 41 Prozent
Logitech hat die Geschäftszahlen für sein drittes Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 31. Dezember) veröffentlicht. Daraus geht hervor, dass das Unternehmen seinen Gewinn gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs um 41 Prozent von 40 Millionen Dollar (28,5 Millionen Euro) auf 57 Millionen Dollar (40,6 Millionen Euro) steigern konnte. Sony Ericsson Vivaz brings 720p capture to US phones
After a premature reveal on Wednesday, Sony Ericsson today officially took the wraps from one of the first phones to provide HD video capture in a US-ready form. The Vivaz is now known to include North American 850MHz 3G and will let those on AT&T, Rogers and others record 720p video they can then push to Picasa or YouTube. In a small tweak to Apple, Sony Ericsson also touts that its uploads will work in the background, although full 720p detail will need to go over Wi-Fi due to battery worries.

Wintek claims end to strike, no production impact
A strike at a Wintek plant in Suzhou, China is over, the manufacturer says. Workers first walked off the job on January 15th, ostensibly over the lack of a Lunar New Year bonus. Final Fantasy: Rollenspielklassiker als App

Wir zweifeln noch ein wenig daran, ob es nicht einfachere Methoden gibt in der Badewanne ohne Angst vor Elektroschocks fernzusehen, aber Hydra dürfte zumindest für Familien deren Kinder eh schon so verzogen sind, dass man ihnen Strom im Badezimmer nicht zutrauen kann, eine Variante sein die Gören ruhig zu stellen und sauber zu bekommen. 16:9 Widescreen, 1080p LCD Bildschirm, der leider bislang nur in einer 19-Zoll Variante kommt. Nokia fights rivals with free turn-by-turn GPS
Nokia at a special event has unveiled a major new initiative to fend off competitors with GPS-savvy phones. A new version of Ovi Maps now offers both driving and pedestrian turn-by-turn navigation for free, shedding the subscription that Nokia previously needed for either feature. Seagate verzeichnet Umsatzsteigerung um 33 Prozent
Seagate hat seine Bilanz für das zweite Quartal seines Geschäftsjahres 2010 (bis 1. Januar) veröffentlicht. Demnach steigerte der Festplattenhersteller seinen Umsatz in den vergangenen drei Monaten gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 33 Prozent auf 3,03 Milliarden Dollar (2,15 Milliarden Euro). Im Oktober hatte das Unternehmen noch mit Erlösen in Höhe von 2,75 bis 2,85 Milliarden Dollar (1,95 bis 2,03 Milliarden Euro) gerechnet.

Zusammen mit dem Heinrich Hertz Institut in Berlin haben sie eine Methode entwickelt über LED-Lampen Datenübertragungsraten bis 500Mbps hinzubekommen. Der vorherige Rekord lag wohl bei 200Mbps. Ebay meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung im vierten Quartal
Ebay hat im vierten Quartal seinen Umsatz um 16 Prozent auf 2,37 Milliarden Dollar erhöht. Der Non-GAAP-Gewinn klettert gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 12 Prozent auf 586 Millionen Dollar beziehungsweise 0,44 Dollar je Aktie. Analysten hatten die Einnahmen im Vorfeld auf 2,29 Milliarden Dollar und den Gewinn auf 0,40 Dollar je Aktie geschätzt. Der Überschuss nach GAAP, der Erlöse aus dem Verkauf des Tochterunternehmens Skype enthält, wächst zwischen Oktober und Dezember um 269 Prozent auf 1,355 Milliarden Dollar.

Amazon responded to the wave of more advanced e-book readers today by unveiling plans for a Kindle Development Kit. The software tool will give developers a means of producing apps, or "active content," that will sell through the Kindle Store. Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity6: Grafikkarte für 6 TFTs

Final Fantasy heading to iPhone
Square Enix is bringing versions of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II to the iPhone and iPod touch.
The publisher hasn't revealed any info on the mobile ports, but screens suggest these will be based on the existing PSP versions, featuring redrawn graphics and character art, exclusive all-new dungeons and an updated camera view.

Quanta arbeitet an einem 3,5"-Touchscreen-Mini-Computer mit Handy, die Welt schaut weg

Ohne konkrete Bilder oder zumindest konkrete Anhaltspunkte ist es uns nicht ganz klar, was Quanta vor hat, aber der Plan von Barry Lam, Vorstandsvorsitzender von Quanta, für einen "Computer in der Größe eines iPhones" besorgt uns doch. Laut Hersteller geht es um ein "Smartbook" mit einem 3,5"-Touchscreen, Telefonie und einem Webbrowser. Das seien die primären Funktionen. Einen Komplett-Rechner würden wir das noch nicht nennen, aber vielleicht ergibt sich das ja später noch. YouTube: HTML5-Player anstelle von Flash-Videos
Wer mit Safari 4 oder Chrome im Internet surft, kann YouTube-Videos neuerdings in einem HTML5-Player betrachten. HTML5 ist ein neuer Web-Standard, welcher unter anderem die Wiedergabe von Videos ermöglicht. IDC: SSD-Verkäufe steigen 2009 um 14 Prozent

Piraterie im App Store schlägt mediale Wellen
24/7 Wall Street haben mit einer Veröffentlichung zum Thema App Store-Piraterie einige Wellen zumindest in der Apple-affinen Blogosphäre geschlagen. 450 Mio. US-Dollar haben - so die Analyse -Apple und unabhängige App-Entwickler seit dem Start des App Store bereits durch Piraterie verloren.
Ganz offiziell von Apple stammt noch die Zahl der drei Mrd. App-Downloads bis Januar 2010. Schätzungen besagen, dass 13 bis 21 Prozent davon auf kostenpflichtige Angebote entfallen. Schon erklärungsbedürftiger ist die Annahme, dass kostenpflichtige Apps im Durchschnitt drei US-Dollar kosten. Es würden sich 60 bis 110 Mio. US-Dollar an App Store-Einnahmen pro Quartal ergeben - mit eindeutig steigender Tendenz und trotz des unterstellten Umfangs von raubkopierten Apps auf iPhones und iPod touch mit Jailbreak.

Digieffects has launched Atmosphere, a new After Effects plug-in for simulating atmospheric conditions. The plug-in is capable of generating haze and fog effects within videos, while several configuration options allow users to adjust the effects depending on lighting and distance to the camera. Kindle dev kit announced, 'active content' coming to Kindle Store later this year
Amazon's just announced the Kindle Development Kit, or KDK for short, which will be rolled out starting next month in limited beta and then to wait-listed folks "as space becomes available." Samsung to Pay Rambus 900 million USD...
In order to stop current lawsuits initiated constantly by Rambus, Samsung decided to pay 900 million USD. This jackpot will be splitted for 200 million USD in shares, 200 millions USD cash when the contract will be signed and then 25 million USD every semester for the next 5 years. For such price, Samsung will get unlimited access to Rambus patent portfolio, without requiring to pay additional fee for all technologies, especially RAM-related ones. In addition, both companies will work together to develop specific RAM types for mobile devices and GPU.
If the overall value might look huge, this is not much when looking at the cash generated by the RAM/flash memory activities run by Samsung. This is also a smart way to stop any legal actions, especially in USA where legal decisions can sometimes be synonym of multi-million or billion fines. Both companies will benefit, as Samsung will not have to invest too much in lawyers anymore (Rambus might then re-allocate lawyers to other RAM manufacturers)

First SLC-based SSD at "Competitive" Price
For economical reason, the SSD market has mostly be using MLC chips as it offers twice the density of SLC (see our article about SSD). Nevertheless, SLC chips are faster and offer longer lifetime: 10x more than MLC. Of course, they are more expensive and most SSD manufacturers have made the MLC choice. AMD persecuted by Intel and now NVidia
AMD can now claim officially that they are persecuted by Intel who did everything they could to block AMD from getting a share of the market. According to CNET, Apple is speaking to recording companies on the possibility of a free streaming music service. Apple didn't reveal much, but much like what was reported yesterday, the idea is that people would upload their music to Apple's servers and it would be available to them anywhere in the world on any device.
The service would be framed to the recording industry as a "value add that could help stimulate sales" according to their sources and would be available as early as this Spring.
The issue appears to be whether the licensing for music changes when users are able to store them in the cloud. MP3 founder Michael Richardson says consumers shouldn't have to pay the labels any extra to store their music in the Cloud. But he's currently being sued by EMI for doing just that

Microsoft's Twitter chatter suggests Danger is up to something -- Pink drawing near?
The other day, we happened to catch a tag on a tweet reading "from Danger." No biggie, really -- Sidekicks have had Twitter integration for a while now. Here's the thing, though: tweeting from a Sidekick plugs a "from Sidekick" on the end, not Danger -- and what's more, the Danger text links to Microsoft's home page rather than Sidekick's. It's starting to get juicy, right? Anyhow, these "from Danger" tweets have really picked up across dozens of accounts since December or so, to the point where we've got a constant cacophony of 'em today -- possibly a sign that these guys have a product in the works that's nearing completion.

YouTube trials movie rentals
YouTube on Wednesday revealed that it will start offering video rentals through its site. In sync with the Sundance Film Festival, the host plans to rent movies from the 2009 and 2010 Sundance festivals as well as "other U.S. partners." Those from the festivals will be available through to January 31st, while other movies and videos should be available in the weeks ahead.

The Tablet Prophecies – Part 2
Patently Apple has Part II in their series on Apple Tablet related patents today. Some highlights: Four antennas, surround sound speakers, advanced 3D map navigation and automobile race gaming. What particularly grabs our attention however, is the quantity of multi-touch language patents Apple has been working on. So many details are covered. It will certainly be interesting to see how much of this makes it to next week's tablet introduction.

Verizon iPhone to be announced next week?
We've heard this before, but with AT&T announcing both Android and Palm Pres earlier this month, it just might be time for Apple to announce a Verizon iPhone. According to Canaccord Adams' Peter Misek (via Apple 2.0), there is a "good chance" that Steve Jobs' one more thing will be the announcement of iPhone OS 4.0 and a Verizon iPhone. In a note to clients Wednesday he said:

"Jobs hates Eric" (Schmidt)?
Jim Goldman got a little bit of feedback on the Bing search for Mobile Safari story we discussed yesterday. Of the three points, one struck us as pretty significant.
"Jobs hates Eric."
That doesn't bode well for the Apple/Google relationship. Perhaps there was some tension caused by the Admob deal? ChromeOS? Android on AT&T? Google Latitude? Google Voice? Chrome passing Safari? …see what we're getting at here?
Goldman goes on to mention that the Bing iPhone app saw more action that all of Verizon's phones combined a

AT&T prepping network for "Unannounced device?"
BGR has another vague one today about how AT&T's busybodies are scrambling to upgrade their network to meet the demand of some new, data-hungry device. Obviously they are looking at Apple's event next week.
AT&T has apparently been meeting individually with regional executives to inform them of some changes to the AT&T network.

Lenovo RapidDrive brings SSD and HDD together, demoes 66 percent speed boost on video
You know, making that jump from HDD to SSD still costs an arm and a leg, so how about somewhere in between that gap? That's what Lenovo's offering as an option for the IdeaPad Y460 and Y560 coming in March. The idea with this RapidDrive technology is that you can have a 32GB or 64GB PCI-E SSD installed alongside your regular HDD (up to 500GB option), and the two drives will effectively be combined into one. Sounds like a tribute to the hybrid hard drives that seem to have quietly disappeared. The guys at Lenovo Blogs
