Study: middle-aged people unimpressed with modern technology
The Olds -- they're never happy, are they? Just look at this study conducted by the feared and respected Zogby International. According to a poll, those aged 35-54 are most disappointed by how far technology has come by 2010, having grown up with the concept of that Jetsons robot that automatically brushes your teeth and the promise of Sleeper's Orgasmatron. Still, 21 percent of Emperor Zogby's subjects said tech was more advanced than they would have imagined, while another 37 percent claimed we were right on track with our technological achievements. But what about the super old people, you ask? Well go figure, a third of those queried 70 years of age and over said our current tech was basically blowing their collective minds (or, was more advanced than they expected). Said one

Here’s the thimbleful of information I have heard regarding The Tablet (none of which has changed in six months): The Tablet project is real, it has you-know-who’s considerable undivided attention, and everyone working on it has dropped off the map. I don’t know anyone who works at Apple who doubts these things; nor do I know anyone at Apple who knows a whit more. I don’t know anyone who’s seen the hardware or the software, nor even anyone who knows someone else who has seen the hardware or software. Softbank's 1Seg TV tuner gets companion iPhone app
Softbank this week revealed plans to give its iPhone 1Seg TV tuner an official iPhone app. The upcoming TV Mobile app will let those with an iPhone 3G or 3GS watch over-the-air TV from the tuner without having to keep the peripheral near the Apple device as they do today. Rather than create a short-range connection over Wi-Fi, the app can be set to stream TV from the tuner over the Internet to a distant iPhone, using a local Wi-Fi router to give the 1Seg add-on its connection.

BPhone looks like a netbook, acts like a netbook, has 'phone' in its name (video)
If you were looking for a large and impractical "cellphone," we just might have some news for you. Hot on the heels of a certain Dell netbook mod, we submit for your approval a 5-inch convertible device that features a QWERTY chocolate keyboard, trackball, and quite possibly Windows XP. We've got no relevant data for you, such as manufacturer, price, and release date are all mysteries at this point, but you can see it in action if you like -- just check out the videos after the break. As for us, we think we'll just wait for the xpPhone.

Apple tablet team in a "cone of silence"
Apple has maintained a level of secrecy surrounding its tablet project not seen since the iPhone about three years ago, John Gruber says. Referencing sources at Apple, the historically accurate technology writer reiterates that a Get Smart-like "cone of silence" exists surrounding those developing the tablet and virtually no information comes from those directly involved. Many of those involved are the same who developed apps like Calendar, Mail and Safari for the iPhone and underwent a similar routine in late 2006.

MacBug.de wünscht ein frohes neues Jahr!
Noch ist es 2009 - das ändert sich aber bald.
Das nächste Jahr wird bereits im Januar in Sachen Apple spannend beginnen - das neue Apple Tablet, ob es jetzt nun iGuide oder iSlate heißen wird, wird am 26. Januar voraussichtlich angekündigt. Auch sonst steht ein interessantes neues Jahr 2010 vor der Tür!

Tempted by 1080p even on an underpowered Mac?
For lack of optimized drivers, our Macs are obliged to use their main processors to decode HD videos. Even though 720p does not pose a problem on Mac Intel, it is a different story on the least powerful machines like MacBook, or mini Mac, except the latest model with the 2,66 GHz option that just about works. Of course, this is still more of a fantasy for machines equipped with a GMA. It is however now possible thanks to XBMC and via the addition of a small card. It has a name, Crystal HD. It is a new magic chip manufactured by Broacom which is a hardware decoder of the MPEG2, VC1 and of H.264 up to 1080p.
As icing on the cake, this chip it is sold for $69 with PCI Express 1x compact format. All Mac Intel have such a connector on their mother boards. It is simply that which is used to connect the

Acer Aspire One AO532h joins the Pine Trail party with a $299 pricetag
It's about time that the number one netbook manufacturer officially release details on its Pine Trail packing netbooks. The 10-inch Acer Aspire One A0535h seems to look slightly different than its predecessors, but its brand new Intel Atom N450 CPU, GMA 1350 graphics and promised 10-hours of battery life should give it bragging rights at the family dinner table. The rest of the specs are standard fare - Windows 7 Starter, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and a 4400 mAH six-cell battery. Ex-president of Google China lets the cat out of the bag concerning the Apple Tablet
For reasons that we are not aware of, Kaifu Lee, the former president of Google China decided to tell all he knows about the future Apple Tablet.
The Apple Tablet resembles a large iPhone with an incredible user interface and a magnificent 10.1" screen. It combines the functions of a netbook, a Kindle and an Ebook. It has a virtual keyboard for entering text and a webcam to make Video conferences.
This is a scoop, but confirms what we know while we wait for the official announcement.

WakeMate provides quiet Bluetooth alarm for iPhone
In an attempt to help users get a better night's sleep, a company called WakeMate has introduced a product that will pair with the iPhone and other Bluetooth handsets to detect a user's sleep patterns and wake them up within a 20 minute window that is said to be the most efficient and healthy for the body. The wrist band is an actigraph and will infer the wearer's sleep pattern and circadian rhythms based on motions.

Appeals court sides with Apple in iPod hearing loss dispute
Well, it looks like that iPod hearing loss lawsuit that's been nagging Apple for the past couple of years may finally be going away (in its current form, at least), as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has now affirmed a 2008 district court ruling and rejected a class-action lawsuit that sought to hold Apple responsible for hearing loss allegedly caused by iPods. While that may be a possibility, the court said that the "plaintiffs do not allege the iPods failed to do anything they were designed to do nor do they allege that they, or any others, have suffered or are substantially certain to suffer inevitable hearing loss or other injury from iPod use" -- further adding that, "at most, t

Orange to launch "HD" calls in 2010
Orange UK today said it would be one of the first carriers to upgrade its call quality with plans to launch "high definition" calls. The HD Voice service will use a new speech transmission format known as Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate (WB-AMR) that allocates multiple times more bandwidth to a call than normal 3G voice without increasing the amount of data used. Orange expects calls to sound as good as if the other caller was "actually in the same room" if both are using the same technology.

SmartQ V5 MID available now to a world that's just stopped caring
When we first laid eyes on the SmartQ V5, we were pretty underwhelmed yet another resistive touchscreen MID? We're beginning to long for those halcyon days of late 2009 when an Android handheld was a thing of awe and wonder. Just a refresher: this guy features a 4.3-inch display, 600MHz ARM11 processor (which the brave among us can overclock to 800MHz), 256MB RAM, HDMI out, and more. Of some interest to the jaded gadget-head, this guy ships with Android, Ubuntu, and Windows CE 6.0 pre-installed -- not a bad feature, if that's your thing. If you poke around the Internets you should be able to find this bad boy for near $180.

Don't send special keys in 10.6's Screen Sharing
In 10.6, the system will send keys, such as Command-Tab, Command-Option-Escape, and others, to the remote machine during Screen Sharing sessions. This hint explains how to prevent that from happening, so that the special keys are interpreted by the local Mac.

Figures from China Unicom: 300,000 iPhones in China
Last figures of iPhone sales in China are now available: China Unicom sold 300,000 units within two months. If we consider that around 200 millions potential customers for the iPhone, such results is rather low. However, as we explained it already in the past, the device distributed via Unicom is locked as it lacks Wi-Fi while all iPhone available in China via the grey market are not locked and cheaper

To close out 2009, Apple's online store has cut prices on a variety of refurbished Mac models starting at $899 for the 2.0GHz aluminum MacBook with 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. Apple TV sales inch ahead, AirPort loses ground
Most of Apple's networking peripherals sold only adequately during 2009, according to data from the NPD Group. The firm notes that Apple TV sales were up less than 10 percent in 2009, continuing a lethargic trend that emerged in 2008. The product has not been helped materially by the release of the Apple TV 3.0 firmware -- adding features like Internet radio -- or a price cut down to $229.

Former Google president confirms Apple's tablet plan...
Apple will indeed announce its much talked about but still unconfirmed tablet device next month, and this will be equipped with 3D graphics and cost under $1,000, the former president of Google China, Kai-Fu Lee, wrote in a blog post last night.
Lee informs us that “Apple predicts production of nearly 10 million units in the first year,” he wrote, citing a source he described as a knowledgeable friend. The tablet will look like a large iPhone and come with a 10.1-inch multitouch touchscreen, a virtual keyboard and support for videoconferencing and e-books, the post said.
Lee worked for Apple a decade ago before quitting Google this year. He now heads up his own firm, Innovation Works, a Beijing-based technology fund with investment from WI Harper Group and Foxconn Group He also says

Apple beats 'ear-bashing iPod' suit
Apple has fought off a class action lawsuit alleging iPods damage hearing.
A federal appeals court yesterday rejected the lawsuit, which claimed iPods to be defective because they lack adequate controls against “dangerous volumes” in music playback.
The lawsuit was filed by two iPod users in 2006. They argued that the max volume limit of 115dB on the products was too high - enough to cause permanent hearing loss to someone who uses the device.
The devices' ear buds provide less protection against hearing damage than conventional headphones, they claimed, observing that the volume switch doesn’t adequately inform listeners about sound levels that might be harmful.

Apple has updated an existing patent to describe a remote control to provide a more natural control experience when controlling devices such as the Apple TV - with a remote that’s very like a Wii-mote.
MacRumors tells us the filing includes details of accelerometers within the remote control, which can be used to browse media, fast forward/rewind, rotate images and even zoom in and out.

This is why Apple denied Google Latitude from the App Store...
Another Apple patent today looks remarkably similar to the functionality of Google Latitude which Apple relegated to WebApp status earlier this year. Obviously if Apple is working on their own version of Google Latitude (or owns the IP rights to this functionality), they'd be hesitant to put an app with the same functionality on their devices from another company. Now it all makes sense!
In Apple's implementation, it looks like the location data can be carried in an SMS or Instant Message (interesting news in its own right), which can then be opened in the Maps application to show the other person's location relative to the iPhone user's.

Orange plans to bring 'HD Voice' calls to UK next year
We've had some indication that Orange planned to expand its "HD Voice" technology beyond the hot testbed of Moldova sometime in the coming year, and it looks like the carrier is now starting to get a bit more specific about when the UK will finally have an alternative to standard definition calls. Apparently, Orange will begin trials of the new and improved, 3G-facilitated service early in the new year, and fully roll it out along with a "range of handsets" before the end of the year. Additional Apple motion remote patent surfaces
A newly-published patent application may suggest that Apple has been seriously contemplating a major upgrade of the Apple TV. Originally submitted on May 1st of last year, the filing depicts a remote specifically interacting with an updated Apple TV interface. The interface would support commands from a new remote, capable of recognizing motion gestures in addition to regular button presses.

MagicPrefs: Funktionsumfang der Magic Mouse erweitern
Mit der Magic Mouse hat Apple endlich die Mighty Mouse abgelöst, deren Scrollball viele Leute in den Wahnsinn getrieben hat. Spätestens nach zwei Monaten funktionierte mindestens eine Scrollrichtung nicht mehr, da ein die Sensoren des Scrollballs recht schnell verschmutzten. Ein letzte Ausweg war oft nur noch, den Scrollball hart auf einem Stück Papier zu rollen oder mit einem schmalen Papierstreifen in der Maus zu hantieren.
Mit der Magic Mouse gehört dieses Ärgerniss nun endlich der Vergangenheit an. Doch die Lieferschwierigkeiten stellten die Geduld auch der hartnäckigsten Apple Fans auf die Probe. Palm App Catalog nears 1,000 apps
Owners of the Palm Pre and Pixi discovered on Thursday that the Palm App Catalog is nearing the 1,000 app mark. As of the morning, the portal had 946 titles and is likely to cross 1,000 by or shortly after the smartphone creator's CES keynote. Apple beats 'ear-bashing iPod' suit
Apple has fought off a class action lawsuit alleging iPods damage hearing.
A federal appeals court yesterday rejected the lawsuit, which claimed iPods to be defective because they lack adequate controls against “dangerous volumes” in music playback.
The lawsuit was filed by two iPod users in 2006. They argued that the max volume limit of 115dB on the products was too high - enough to cause permanent hearing loss to someone who uses the device.
The devices' ear buds provide less protection against hearing damage than conventional headphones, they claimed, observing that the volume switch doesn’t adequately inform listeners about sound levels that might be harmful.

Former Google president confirms Apple's tablet plan...
Apple will indeed announce its much talked about but still unconfirmed tablet device next month, and this will be equipped with 3D graphics and cost under $1,000, the former president of Google China, Kai-Fu Lee, wrote in a blog post last night.
Lee informs us that “Apple predicts production of nearly 10 million units in the first year,” he wrote, citing a source he described as a knowledgeable friend. The tablet will look like a large iPhone and come with a 10.1-inch multitouch touchscreen, a virtual keyboard and support for videoconferencing and e-books, the post said.
Lee worked for Apple a decade ago before quitting Google this year. He now heads up his own firm, Innovation Works, a Beijing-based technology fund with investment from WI Harper Group and Foxconn Group He also says

Wir könnten jetzt hier eine Debatte darüber anzetteln, wie menschenunwürdig es mitunter sein kann, eine internationale Zeitschrift in Deutschland zu abonnieren und warum wir uns nicht wundern, dass das Print-Business dringend ein paar Updates in Sachen gesunden Menschenverstands braucht. Der National Geographic allerdings hat eine Lösung parat. Alle Ausgaben seit 1888, gesammelt auf einer Festplatte. Kann man kaufen, kostet 200 Dollar. Und weil das Magazin keineswegs beabsichtig, 2010 den Verkauf einzustellen, sind lediglich 60GB belegt auf der Festplatte, damit man eigenhändig weiter archivieren kann.

AT&T asks FCC to phase out landline regulations
A day without landline phones? Some may say that's inevitable, but it looks like AT&T is now starting to try to speed things up a bit, with it recently responding to an FCC request for comments with a 32-page filing that details its position on the matter. That more or less boils down to two major requests: that the FCC eliminate the regulatory requirements that it support a landline network, and that it provide a firm deadline for phasing it out. Kritik an Tagesschau-App: Die ARD wehrt sich!
In den vergangenen Tagen gab es immer wieder starke Kritik gegen das Vorhaben der ARD, eine kostenlose Tagesschau-App für das iPhone zur Verfügung zu stellen. Insbesondere der Springer-Verlag hat sich nach meiner Meinung, extrem weit aus dem Fenster gelehnt und drohte mit dem Verlust von Tausenden Arbeitsplätzen (wir berichteten). Aber auch Politiker unterschiedlicher Parteien schalteten sich in diese "Diskussion" ein. Als letztes sprach sich sogar der Bund der Steuerzahler gegen eine solche kostenlosen App aus.
Nun hat sich der Chefredakteur der Tagesschau, Dr. Kai Gniffke, der Kritik gestellt und im Tagesschau Blog dazu Stellung genommen. Eine Aussage ist, dass die die Tagesschau-App nichts anderes, als schon vorh

Pünktlich zur Markteinführung im Oktober hat sich auch Apple in einem Support-Dokument zu Windows 7 und Boot Camp geäußert. Nokia Launched a New Lawsuit against Apple
The battle between Nokia and Apple concerning patent infringement is becoming more violent everyday. It was initiated by Nokia last october, then Apple fired back on the same topic about 2 weeks ago. While the first lawsuit was related to patents linked to software used for mobile phone technologies, the new legal action is targeting the antenna, energy management as well as user interface. Based on recent reaction from Apple, we can imagine that the company will react soon. The battle is just beginning, both parties are exhibiting their weapons and testing them to evaluate the strength of the opponent. At the end, there will be agreement between both companies, and only lawyers are currently sure to win big bucket of money, independently of the winner.

Ex-Google exec: Apple tablet has front camera
Former Google China president and now Innovation Works head Kai-fu Lee has stirred attention over Apple's rumored tablet this week with an update to his 163 mini blog claiming knowledge of the device. The executive, who claims an "informed friend," says the tablet has the predicted 10-inch screen and resembles a "large iPhone." While multi-touch and 3D support are expected, he adds that the tablet has a front camera for video chats, making it a first of the sort for any Apple handheld.

TiVo planning a new "Premiere" DVR?
A packaging mixup may have revealed the next DVR coming from TiVo. Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be the Series4 we were looking for, but the "TiVo Premiere" (or Premiere XL) instructions sent along with a new TiVo HD to self-described Chicagoland geek Patrick McCarron show a slimmed down box with one (multistream only) CableCARD slot instead two and no S-video or phone jack. Verizon now forcing Bing app on BlackBerry users
Verizon has stepped up its tie-in with Microsoft by installing a Bing icon on subscribers' BlackBerries without their consent. Mophie readies iPhone credit card reader
Mophie today broadcast its intent to get into mobile payment by unveiling early details of a credit card reader for the iPhone. The peripheral when attached will let owners "complete financial transactions on the go" and will come with its own companion iPhone app to handle the payments themselves.
