FCC makes white space database for future devices

The FCC late last week approved the creation of a database of white space frequencies to accelerate white space data access. Collected by a third party, the information would make a note of which frequencies are still being used by existing TV networks and thus which of the unused airwaves, or white spaces, could safely be used for wide-area networks. The database would be privately run and could charge for access to a limited number of aspects of the database, such as pre-made lists of available frequencies or registering hardware that runs at a fixed frequency.

Kindle Kradle aims to be to 'holding things' what the Kindle is to paper

We're not entirely certain, but there seems to be at least a decent chance that this is a case of the name coming before the actual product. In any event, the so-called Kindle Kradle is nothing if not ugly unique, and promises to finally get rid of that pesky need to actually hold the Kindle while you use it. Apple will offer Psystar a way out without loss of face

According to Infoworld, Apple will sign an agreement with Psystar that could put at an end the crisis and the war between the two companies. In this agreement, Psystar would agree not to sell any more machines on which Mac OS X is pre-installed and should pay Apple damages of which the amount is not known. In exchange, Apple would stop the proceedings against the company and would accept the amount of these damages once Psystar have exhausted all the possible appeals.If this agreement is signed, Apple will give an indication of firmness but also of great leniency. Apple approves Knocking live-streaming video app for iPhone

Apple has approved Knocking Live Video, the first App Store title to enable live video streaming directly from an iPhone using the 3G network. The utility supports device-to-device connectivity between handsets, rather than uploading videos to web-based portals such as YouTube. Users can set up an account before requesting and "Knocking" friends. The video feed is then transmitted to the recipient, regardless of their proximity to the sender.

AT&T is once again trailing other major US carriers in its quality of service rankings, Consumer Reports has found in its latest survey (live soon; subscription required). Readers scored the network just 66 points for its performance across 19 cities, just below the declining Sprint's 67 and significantly lower than T-Mobile's 70 or Verizon's leading 75 points. Apple dings Psystar for $2.67m, round two heads to Florida

It looks like the first phase of the Apple / Psystar Mac cloning saga is winding towards a conclusion, as the two sides have just filed wrap up their case with the California court that ruled decisively in favor of Apple last month. As you probably expect, Apple hasn't ceded much ground here: Psystar has agreed to be deemed to be liable for illegally copying OS X Leopard, bypassing the OS X kernel encryption in violation of the DMCA, and breaching Apple's EULA, all to the tune of $2,675,050. In return, Apple's dropping its various trademark and unfair competition claims, and has promised to hold off on collecting any cash until the various appeals have run their course. Fring adds video calling to iPhone

Fring (App Store Link) has always been our favorite iPhone instant messaging appby far.  Not only is it free, it was the first to allow Skype calls and SIP calls (Including Google's Gizmo5).  IT was also one of the first to have Push Notifications and it works across many smartphone platforms.  Today's iPhone update allows video calling to Skype users via the iPhone's built in camera.  We're not quite sure how this works yet (assuming you'll need a mirror or something to watch and record at the same time).  Anyone out there tried it yet?  Does it work on the original iPhone and 3G or just the 3GS? A leak today reveals that at least three of Intel's mobile Core i5 and i7 parts should be available come the start of next year at moderate prices. Apple and Psystar have agreed to a partial settlement in their long-running legal battle, court documents show. Following a judgment against Psystar, and an Apple call for a permanent injunction, Psystar has agreed to pay an unspecified amount in damages once all appeals have been exhausted. Mac's web share sees rare drop in November

Mac web usage saw an uncharacteristic drop in November that may be owed partly to Windows 7, new data from NetApplications shows. Windows 7's first full month of availability saw its share nearly double to 3.98 percent of Internet traffic and contributed to a rare fall in the Mac's share, which fell 0.16 percent across all versions. The data also reveals that many users had skipped Vista entirely, as Windows XP lost 1.45 percent of absolute share in the Windows 7 switchover while Vista only lost 0.23 percent.

All is not well in the land of the E6400- and E6500-series lappytops. What looks to be hundreds of owners of these machines have been complaining of massive performance issues, throttling themselves down by as much as 95% under what would seem to be normal operating conditions. Photoshop fürs iPhone weltweit erhältlich

Photoshop.com Mobile für das iPhone war bereits seit Anfang Oktober 2009 im App Store von Apple für die USA und Kanada erhältlich, nun gab Adobe die Verfügbarkeit für alle Länder mit App Stores bekannt. Nutzer können mit Photoshop.com Mobile ihre Bilder einfach und schnell bearbeiten, hochladen, ansehen und direkt über ihr iPhone mit Freunden austauschen. Im US- und Kanada-App Store wurde die Anwendung seit dem 09.10.09 laut Adobe bereits über drei Millionen Mal heruntergeladen. Die mobile Anwendung ermöglicht Anwendern den Zugriff auf ihre Online-Bildersammlung auf Photoshop.com. Weiter bietet die kostenlose App "grundlegende Bearbeitungswerkzeuge zum Beschneiden und Rotieren von digitalen Bildern sowie Effekte und Filter", aber natürlich nicht die Funktionsvielfalt der hochpreisigen HighEnd-Anwendung für Mac und PC. iTunes-Link

They're short on details, but the folks at Cambridge Consultants might just be onto something with this new "Suma sensor system" of theirs. Basically it translates the deformation of its soft material into 3D data that can be used in a video game to "unleash the full capabilities of both the human hand and the user's imagination." QuickerTek intros soloar chargers for range of MacBooks

QuickerTek has expanded its line of solar chargers to include new models capable of supplying power to MacBooks. The Apple Juicz chargers feature a flexible solar cell that can be folded for storage while traveling. The 27 watt version unfolds to 41.5 x 30.5 inches and is claimed to recharge a MacBook or MacBook Pro in eight to 12 hours when used in optimum sunlight conditions. A 55 watt model is said to charge a notebook in as few as five hours.

Nook online orders pushed to January 11th

Compounding its retail delay, Barnes & Noble quietly noted today that pre-orders of the Nook have been pushed back yet another week, to January 11th. The news comes less than a week after the first delay into 2010 and doesn't come with an additional explanation. Analyst sees iPhone headed for T-Mobile USA next

Verizon's pro-Android stance may push Apple to choose T-Mobile as its next US carrier for the iPhone, Thomas Weisel analyst Doug Reid said today in an investor's note. Assuming AT&T's exclusivity in the US ends next year, the researcher believes T-Mobile would be the easier option as Google's deal with Verizon creates a united front that sets up Verizon as an 'enemy' to Apple. T-Mobile would be a relatively easy addition, while Verizon is deemed less likely to be an option until 4G is widely available in 2011.
