New US carrier promises BYO phone use
A new MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) launched today in the US in the form of Simple Mobile. The cell provider has its own pick of phones but emphasizes attaching the SIM card over its own devices; customers are encouraged to bring their own unlocked phones, including smartphones. About 180 phones have already been pre-screened, though it should work with other devices.

News: Apple delaying approval of iPhone DJ apps?
The delayed approval status of three DJ applications for the iPhone and iPod touch—from three separate developers—has raised questions from fans of the genre as to whether Apple is intentionally delaying their release. Okay, so maybe you didn't need a full-on review to tell you that Fusion-io's ioXtreme PCI Express SSD was staggeringly pricey, but at $11 per gigabyte ($895 for 80GB), you may want to turn a blind eye right now if you're short on disposable income. Photo Essentials 3 adds 'Make It Cool' module
onOne has published Photo Essentials 3, an updated version of its extension for Photoshop Elements. The add-on attempts to simplify certain tasks in Adobe's software, such as color correction, framing, enlargements and background removal. Verizon "very pleased" with early Droid sales
Verizon today responded to predictions for Motorola Droid sales with only a brief statement on their actual results (subscription required). A spokeswoman for the carrier declined to say whether or not a rough estimate of 250,000 Droids sold is accurate but did say the company is "very pleased" with sales in just over a week since the Android phone reached stores. Verizon doesn't normally provide sales breakdowns for phones and doesn't intend one for the Droid, she says.

Pioneer suing Garmin over three navigation patents
Pioneer's GPS products don't make huge waves in the Stateside navigation market, but it's actually got some fairly broad patents on route guidance and mapping, and apparently Garmin's infringing them. That's at least the story Pioneer's telling to the US International Trade Commission, where it's filed a complaint against Garmin and asked for a ban on sales of GPS products that infringe the patents. Obviously that would shake things up in a big way, but we clearly don't have the whole story here -- Pioneer and Garmin have apparently been negotiating for some time, and the two companies are currently fighting it out in the German court system as w

Rivet 2.3 supports Plex Media Center, Denon receivers
Cynical Peak has released v2.3 of Rivet, its Mac media streaming software. The app shares music, video, photo and podcast content with consoles on a local-area network, namely the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Material can be pulled direclty from Aperture, iPhoto or iTunes libraries, though video can only be streamed from custom folders.

Windows Marketplace trickles down to WinMo 6.0 and 6.1
Now that the 6.5 fat cats like the Imagio and Pure have had their fun for a few weeks, it's high time that the love start to trickle down to older upgrade-less devices, and as promised, Microsoft's now obliging with a Windows Marketplace download that'll work on phones running Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1. Gartner: PC sales bouncing back faster than expected
Gartner today said the computer industry is recovering much faster than expected. Based on processor sales, the analyst group estimates PCs have turned from double-digit year-over-year declines at the start of the year to slight increases by the end. It still expects processors, flash memory and other chip technology to face an 11.4 percent decline for all of 2009 but also anticipates levels jumping back to an all-time high seen in 2008.

Sony offering ePub upgrade / trade-in program for PRS-500 e-reader
Sony's already made its commitment to the ePub e-book format fairly clear, but it does still have a lingering problem with some older e-book readers that don't support the format. While some of those are beyond hope, the company does now have an upgrade available for the PRS-500, although it's not quite as simple as you may hope. Turns out you actually have to send your reader in to Sony to receive the firmware update, which is completely free of charge and should take less than 14 days. NVIDIA outs Fermi-based Tesla cards
NVIDIA today provided details of the first official hardware to use its upcoming Fermi architecture. The Tesla 20 series is even more optimized for general-purpose computing standards like OpenCL or NVIDIA's own CUDA and handles complex math that previously hasn't been as practical, such as ISO standard double-precision math and C++ code processing. Unlike past models, though, the card model also has a video output and works as a video card rather than just as a companion device.

Apple working on Concierge iPhone app, Nashua store?
Apple is planning to launch a new iPhone app for visitors to its retail stores, several sources claim. Dubbed Concierge, the app is expected to mimic the company's web-based reservations system, which lets users schedule Genius Bar and One to One appointments. Users should also be able to monitor membership subscriptions of various types. No date for the app's release has so far been leaked.

Wall St. Journal asks why PCs at work are so much worse than at home
The Wall Street Journal gives me a laptop with Windows XP, an operating system I found satisfying when it came out eight years ago but that lacks a lot of modern touches, like a speedy file-search function. My home computer, meanwhile, is a two-year-old iMac running the Leopard version of Apple's Macintosh operating system. Among other virtues, it's got a search function called Spotlight that lets me track down files in a flash. Or take email. Please. There's a limit on how much email employees can store on the company's system, and I routinely bump into it. OnLive promises server-based gaming for iPhones
Gamers should in the future be able to play OnLive titles via an iPhone, the company claims. The forthcoming service takes an alternate approach to processor load, shifting the burden from local devices to OnLive's servers; gamers play via a video stream, making performance more closely tied to bandwidth. The transition to Snow Leopard has problems with Open GL
The arrival of a new update for Mac OS X and is a good reason to hope to have better performances with the hardware. Unfortunately, this is that seldom the case, and with Snow Leopard there seems to have been a clear regressions of the performances of the Open GL drivers. This is what Barefeats noted by comparing the performances of certain games with several graphics cards under Mac OS 10.5.8, 10.6 and 10.6.2.
With OpenGL Extensions Viewer, one notes a clear fall with the performances under Snow Leopard, in particular with Radeon, while the Geforce GTX 285 performs better.
With Xplane, the Radeons do a little better with Snow Leopard, but a bug obviously affects the drivers of the Geforce 285 under 10.6.2 which results with its performances being divided by 2!

Hitachi offers 2TB SimpleTech external drive
Hitachi on Monday added a new range of SimpleDrive external desktop hard drives available in up to a 2TB capacity. In addition to the new capacity, the disks have a Turbo USB 2.0 interface that is said to be 25 percent faster than the traditional spec. Hitachi includes its Fabrik backup software, which automatically copies over selected files from the host PC and includes 2GB of free online backup.

New XPERIA X10 hands-on video brings the snappy
Sony Ericsson's Android-based XPERIA X10 was mighty sluggish when we played with it at the launch a couple weeks ago, but this new video from hdblog.it shows what looks like a much newer software build that's dramatically faster and more responsive. There's nothing much new here in terms of features, but just the fact that the X10 is in the wild and running well is encouraging -- especially since we're really digging that media playback interface. Intel plans six-core Xeon for supercomputers
Intel today promised a version of its Xeon processor specifically tailored to high performance computing (HPC). The design will share the same architecture as the eight-core Nehalem-EX but drop to six cores in return for greater overall performance. Clock speeds should be higher and will still take advantage of the extra bandwidth of the new platform, making it a better pick for clusters and multi-processor servers.

Bitkom meldet sinkende Preise für Hightech-Produkte
Der Bitkom meldet unter Berufung auf Daten des Marktforschungsinstituts GfK, dass die Anschaffungskosten für Hightech-Produkte im laufenden Jahr rückläufig sind. Die Durchschnittspreise für Flachbildfernseher seien dieses Jahr um 17 Prozent auf 720 Euro gefallen. CodeWeavers has posted the first beta of CrossOver Games 8.1.0, a significant update to the company's Mac virtualization software. ASUS to buy Toshiba's notebook business?
ASUS could push its way to near the top of notebook market share by buying out one of its largest competitors, company chairman Jonney Shih reportedly revealed today. He hopes for ASUS to reach the top three in notebook builders by 2011 and says the company has talked to Toshiba about buying its notebook business. Nothing has been finalized, and it remains unclear how close if at all the two may be to a deal.

Sprint 4G goes live in Austin, San Antonio
Sprint on Monday launched its 4G mobile broadband in two Texas cities, Austin, and San Antonio. As before, the WiMAX network promises speeds between 3Mbps to 6Mbps for downloads in real-world use, which should bring VoIP, video and other tasks that are normally too data-intensive for 3G networks. Sprint's 4G mobile broadband network is already available in regions such as Chicago, Dallas and North Carolina.

Smartphone wars: WinMob, Symbian down. iPhone, Blackberry, Android growing
Apple remains ascendant in the smartphone wars, last week's Gartner figures show, with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile shedding 28 percent marketshare inside a year.
The latest data shows Microsoft’s mobile market continuing to shrink, falling from 11 percent in Q3 2008 to 7.9 percent in Q3 2009. Apple, meanwhile, continues to generate interest, with a marketshare climbing from 12.9 to 17.1 percent in the same period of time.
Frequently rumored to be a Microsoft aquisition target, Research In Motion also fared well, climbing from 16 to 20.8 percent. Symbian fell from 49.7 percent to 44.6 percent and Android - which hasn’t fully impacted on the market yet, achieved 3.9 percent.

We think this might be a huge stretch on the term 'clone' but the latest aspiring Air coming out of Taiwan packs an impressive array of features, especially for the $249 pricetag it carries. This one has:

On the downside, it has a Intel Atom 280 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a battery rated at 2.5 hours -and it is plastic and not so thin

The latest Strand Consulting report points out a guarantee risk for European operators of carrying Apple’s insanely popular device - European law demands a two year product guarantee be provided to CE consumers, while Apple only offers a single year’s free warranty.“Within the EU there are general rules governing products purchased by end users. Apple was interested in Admob before Google purchased for $750 million
If true, today's Bloomberg report that Apple approached Admob about acquiring the advertising company just weeks before Google swooped in and purchased them would be a departure from Apple's traditional business. It would also underscore the increasing competition between former corporate "friends" who, only a few months ago, shared board members and interests in dethroning Microsoft from its monopolistic perch atop the computer world.

Apple almost bought Admob before Google for $750 million
If true, today's Bloomberg report that Apple approached Admob about acquiring the advertising company just weeks before Google swooped in and purchased them would be a departure from Apple's traditional business. It would also underscore the increasing competition between former corporate "friends" who, only a few months ago, shared board members and interests in dethroning Microsoft from its monopolistic perch atop the computer world.
Apple contacted AdMob a few weeks before Google made its bid, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the negotiations weren’t public. AdMob, based in San Mateo, California, sells ads that appear on mobile phones.

Apple took tentative steps towards buying AdMob ahead of the recent Google acquisition, say sources contacted by Bloomberg. Sehr detailverliebt ist dieser Mininachbau einer 1956 Corvette C1 mit Benzinmotor und allem, was ein richtiges Auto auch hat. Mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 56 km/h und 7 PS Leistung auch alles andere als langsam und so bräuchte die breit grinsende Flitzpiepe zudem ausreichend Platz, um das schnittige Cabriolet mal richtig auszufahren. Aber Leute, die so was kaufen, haben auch den Platz daheim, sagt man ja so. Nokia N900 quick hands-on
We've finally had a chance to play around at length with a very late pre-production version of Nokia's N900 (retail units are already shipping, but not to our neck of the woods just yet) and we wanted to scribble out a few notes for you before taking delivery of a final build for a full review hopefully in the next week or two. Here are some highlights we've noticed so far:
Processor, processor, processor. Oh, and did we mention the processor? The N900's Cortex A8-based core yields significant improvements in day-to-day usability over the N810's ARM11 unit.

Telekom liefert sichere Smartphones an Bundesregierung

Zu Beginn der Supercomputer-Konferenz "SC09" hat Nvidia erste konkrete Angaben zu Rechenleistung und Strombedarf seiner neuen GPU "Fermi" gemacht. Nvidia hat auf der diesjährigen Supercomputing Conference in Portland zwei neue Tesla-System auf Basis der kommenden Fermi-Architektur vorgestellt. Casio intros two Exilims with low-light sensors
Casio on Monday upgraded two of its key Exilim cameras to focus on low-light image quality. The EX-FH25 superzoom and EX-FC150 compact both have backlit CMOS sensors borrowed from the Sony TX1 and can take in more light, improving the detail both for night scenes as well as portraits of backlit subjects. The latest Strand Consulting report points out a guarantee risk for European operators of carrying Apple’s insanely popular device - European law demands a two year product guarantee be provided to CE consumers, while Apple only offers a single year’s free warranty.“Within the EU there are general rules governing products purchased by end users. Consumer electronics like mobile phones are covered by a two-year guarantee. Apple gewinnt vor Gericht gegen Psystar
Am 3. Juli 2008 reichte Apple im Heimstaat Kaliforninen Klage gegen Open-Mac-Hersteller Psystar ein. Psystar vertreibt mittlerweile seit über 1.5 Jahren normale PC-Hardware mit einem vorinstallierten, gecrackten Mac OS X. In der Klageschrift wurden Psystar Verstösse gegen die Lizenzbedingungen sowie Urheberrechtsverletzungen vorgeworfen. Nun hat das Gericht entschieden - zugunsten Apple, denn das Gericht spricht Psystar schuldig, mehrfache Urheberrechts-Verletzungen gemacht zu haben. We think this might be a huge stretch on the term 'clone' but the latest aspiring Air coming out of Taiwan packs an impressive array of features, especially for the $249 pricetag it carries. This one has:
Built in Ethernet port
3G Wireless
HDMI video out
Full laptop HDD
SD Card slot
On the downside, it has a Intel Atom 280 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a battery rated at 2.5 hours -and it is plastic and not so thin
So really, it is simply a flattened out Netbook with a 12-inch screen. Still, some of these features might be nice on the Air - which would you like to see? We're in the 3G camp. Lots of pictures below.

Samsung started the week by launching its second Android phone on a world level. OnLive demonstrates iPhone app, set to redefine mobile gaming?
Okay, we admit to still being a little bit unsure about OnLive's pledges for high-end, high-resolution, lag-free gaming on any 'ol device with bandwidth, but we want to believe, and so it's with skeptical optimism that we report on news of mobile implementations. The company has demonstrated an iPhone app in which users are able to play against gamers on a PC or on the company's MicroConsole -- despite not having a single button to press. Golf ist wohl eines der Sportarten, wo das Spielgerät aka Ball sich am weitesten vom Spieler weg befinden kann. Folge: man sucht eher Bälle als sie zu spielen. Dass geht selbst dem Aufsichtsrat an die Kaffeekasse und Radargolf will genau das vermeiden, in dem per Ortungssystem Bälle viel einfacher wieder aufzufinden sein sollen. Apple gewinnt vor Gericht gegen Psystar

Apple remains ascendant in the smartphone wars, the latest Gartner figures show, with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile shedding 28 per cent marketshare inside a year.The latest data shows Microsoft’s grip on the mobile market continuing to shrink falling form 11 percent in Q3 2008 to 7.9 percent in Q3 2009. Apple, meanwhile, continues to generate interest, with a marketshare climbing from 12.9 to 17.1 percent in the same period of time.Research In Motion also fared well, climbing from 16 to 20.8 percent. ASUS has already gone public with its plans to jump past Dell to become the number three PC vendor by 2011. Sicherheitslücke in SSL bzw. TLS
Eine Funktion in SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) bzw. im Nachfolger TLS (Transport Layer Security) wurde nun zu einem Sicherheitsproblem, wie Heise Online mit Verweis auf ein Proof of Concept bei Twitter berichtet. Demnach ist es mittels der Renegotiation-Funktion von TLS möglich, HTTPS-Requests mit unterschiedlichen Verschlüsselungen zusammenfassen und vom Server schließlich entschlüsseln zu lassen. Apples Magic Mouse kann mehr, als Apple derzeit per Software unterstützt - kein Wunder also, dass sich auf dem Markt inzwischen etliche Tools für die Touch-Maus tummeln ( wir berichteten ). So müssen zumindest im Social-Network-Kontext Pre und Pixi nicht mehr iPhone oder Android hinterschauen. Apple vs. Psystar: Sieg für Cupertino
Sieg für Apple, Niederlage für Psystar: Beide Firmen hatten eine Beschleunigung des laufenden Verfahrens beantragt. iTunes sucht besten Song/Album 2009
iTunes sucht den besten Song und das beste Album 2009 (iTunes-Link). Abgestimmt werden kann noch bis zum 1. Dezember über Facebook, man muss dazu allerdings iTunes-Fan auf Facebook sein.

Facebook finally comes to webOS, not with a bang but a whimper
Just in time for the Pixi's grand debut, webOS devices (that's just Pixi and Pre) now have their first official Facebook app, joining the ranks of iPhone and Android and we're sad to report that it's about as barebones as they can get. It pulls from the raw live stream, seemingly unfiltered -- even if you said "no" to Farmville updates on your main feed, they'll show up here. New York Times ponders an ad-supported Mac OS
We told you about Apple patenting an ad supported version of Mac OSX last month. Today, the New York Times is examining the possibility in a piece called Apple Wouldn’t Risk Its Cool Over a Gimmick, Would It?
Admittedly, it does seem like a far stretch to think Steve Jobs (who is incidentally named first on the patent) likes this idea and its potential weakening of the Apple brand. Until now, the warranty applied on Airport station and Apple TV was tied to the regulation applied in the country where the unit was purchased (unlike computer). This is not true anymore, as both products now feature an international warranty and after sale support. So, you will be able to make it repaired in another country. For Airport Station you will have to keep in mind that the channels dedicated to wireless network are different depending on countries, so, the repaired unit might have different settings:
USA and Canada: Channel 1 to 11 for 2.4 GHz. Channel 36-48 and 149-165 for 5 GHz.
Japan: Channel 1 to 13 for 2.4 GHz. Channel 36-64 and 100-140 for 5 GHz.

Menq's $80 EasyPC E790 netbook runs Windows CE now, should run Android later (video)
Don't be fooled by that background: this Menq EasyPC E790 is only using Windows CE 5.0 for the sake of this hands-on. Lawsuite Psystar vs. Apple: The Cloner Lost in Court
Apple won against the clone maker company Psystar. This is an important judgement in the on-going lawsuit. The federal judge in San Francisco ruled that Psystar had violated Apple’s copyright and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The Judge William Alsup might have signed the death of Psystar by granting Apple’s motion (copyright-infringement action) while denying Psystar’s counterclaims.
However, the battle between Apple and Psystar is not finished and following claims remain for trial: (1) breach of contract; (2) induced breach of contract, (3) trademark infringement; (4) trademark dilution; (5) trade dress infringement; and (6) state unfair competition under California Business and Professions Code § 17200; and (7) common law unfair competition.
