China Unicom's Prez: iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone
Bloomberg has the story.
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Chairman Chang Xiaobing said he expects Apple Inc.’s iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone, countering skepticism by analysts who say the handset is too expensive. “We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone,” Chang said yesterday in Hong Kong in his first interview with overseas media since becoming head of the company in 2004. Unicom, China’s second-biggest wireless carrier, started an advertising program for the device this week, he said.

NVIDIA quietly adds $99 GeForce GT 240
NVIDIA in a low-key move today launched the GeForce GT 240. The chipset brings performance from the mid-level to sub-$100 cards and uses the newer 40 nanometer manufacturing process to make itself a reasonable fit in budget PCs: its low energy use both helps it occupy only one slot and to run entirely off the power of the PCI Express bus instead of needing a separate power connector.

SimCap for Mac creates iPhone screenshots, videos
Just About Managing has announced SimCap 1.0, an iPhone Simulator screencapture utility. The title is designed for developers creating App Store images, or else professional demonstration videos. Entire UK town to have free Wi-Fi
Swindon Borough Council is planning on offering free Wi-Fi to the entire population of its town by April of next year, says a Tuesday report. The UK town's 186,000 residents will not have to pay any connection charges or subscription fees for the service, due to be called Signal. The project will cost the equivalent of about $1.68 million and is run by newly formed Digital City UK Ltd, 35 percent of which is owned by Swindon's city council.

Dell's slimmest laptop ever still isn't shipping out to eager consumers, but at least the Win7-packin' Adamo XPS is now configurable over on the outfit's website. Needham downgrades Apple stock on economy, progress
Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf has issued a slight downgrade to Apple stock, dropping his rating from "Strong Buy" to simply "Buy." Apple's share price has grown less than 15 percent over a recent $200 price target, he notes, meeting "admittedly arbitrary" criteria for a lower valuation. Also bearing blame is said to be the economy, which remains in recession and may be the ultimate arbiter of whether Apple makes any gains during the holiday season.

Microsoft defeat in Chinese suit bans Windows XP
Microsoft today lost a lawsuit that could temporarly block it from selling netbooks and other PCs in China (registration required). A Beijing Intermediary Peopleís Court determined on Tuesday that two fonts used in Windows 98 SE, 2000, XP and Server 2003 weren't properly licensed from Zhongyi Electronic and that Microsoft must pull sales of any of those releases from the Chinese market. The two companies already had a license agreement but have disagreed over what it covered.

A few nasty rumors were circulating that Barnes & Noble wouldn't accept its own gift cards for ebook purchases, but thankfully, the outfit has come clean today to refute those claims. 'Course, it's possible that this change in policy was a direct result of all the bickering, but either way, the company will be accepting physical gift cards and online gift certificates as payment for ebooks really, really soon. Verizon seen turning to Palm; Droid "disappointing?"
Palm may prove to be Verizon's best hope if the Droid line doesn't bear fruit, Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu said in a note today. South Korean researchers devise a safer lithium ion battery
While some researchers are focused on making batteries that are both safer and longer-lasting, it seems like the folks at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (or KAERI) are simply concerned with making 'em really, really safe. Apple's laptops rate 'Better than Average' in reliability study
We know some of the fanboys aren't going to like Apple's laptops anywhere but at the top of a reliabilty test. Therefore, take this with a grain of salt. A recent study (PDF) by SquareTrade research has shown that Apple's laptops just rate "Above Average".
Asus and Toshiba's laptops ranked higher prompting SquareTrade to remark, "ASUS and Toshiba laptops failed just over half as frequently as HP, which makes them a solid bet in terms of reliability." Apple ranked at 4th place in the study of nine manufacturers between Sony and Dell.

Flash Player 10.1 improves performance but much more to come
The Adobe Flash 10.1 pre-release player is now available for your perusal (download link). Flash 10.1 promises much improved performance via GPU acceleration and other tricks which should make tasks like watching full screen Hulu and 1080P Youtubes much easier on the CPU. (anyone else think the release timing with 1080P Youtube is curious?)
Well, Mac users, don't get too excited yet. Adobe still hasn't enabled GPU acceleration on the Mac version. In fact, GPU acceleration has only been enabled on recent models of NVIDIA GPUs on Windows (where it is showing some major improvements on machines like ION netbooks).

Google has released v2.0 of Google Earth for the iPhone, its portable 3D mapping software. Users navigate a graphic representation of the Earth, on which various places, businesses, photos and Wikipedia articles can be located. RealView's V-Screen for PSP review
The PSP may be a lot of things to a lot of people, but it's not capable of pumping out images in 3D -- cross your eyes all you want but nothing's going to leap off of that LCD. We'll have to wait for at least another iteration of portables before we can start expecting any miracles in that department, but until then there's the V-Screen! It's a big, silly-looking attachment that pledges to add depth to your PSP games despite the system's distinctly two-dimensional screen. Is it magic? Is it sorcery? Is it complete bull? You might be surprised.

Mobistar: Diebe stehlen über 3000 iPhones

OCZ today formally launched the Colossus, its first solid-state drive line aimed primarily at the desktop. Kabel Deutschland erreicht im ersten Halbjahr die Gewinnzone
Kabel Deutschland hat im ersten Halbjahr seines Geschäftsjahres 2009/2010, das am 31. März 2010 endet, knapp die Gewinnzone erreicht. Der Überschuss stieg zwischen dem 1. April und dem 30. September auf vier Millionen Euro. Im Vorjahr hatte das Unternehmen noch einen Verlust von 20,6 Millionen Euro verzeichnet. Das EBITDA-Ergebnis erhöhte sich um 16,2 Prozent von 277,1 Millionen Euro auf 321,9 Millionen Euro.

Look, we're all for competition, but it's about time for some of these guys to stop copying and start innovating. As if your noggin' wasn't already spinning enough as you attempt to whittle down your laundry list of HD media streamers, in flies PrimeDTV with yet another hopeful. The PHD-HM5 looks to be fairly standard in terms of features, with HDMI / component outputs, a lengthy list of supported formats, an Ethernet socket and a pair of USB 2.0 ports. Belgian theft grabs approximately $3 million in iPhones
Between 3,000 and 4,000 iPhones have been stolen from CEVA Logistics in Willebroek, Belgium, according to regional newspapers De Standaard and Gazet van Antwerpen. Although the exact number of phones taken is uncertain, each one is estimated to have been worth between €575 and €675, putting the total value of the robbery around €2 million, or $3 million US. Huge iPhone heist hits Belgian warehouse - best local detectives on case for 'inside job'
Thousands of stolen iPhones will likely appear on the grey market in the coming weeks, following the heavily-planned theft of up to 4,000 of the devices from a warehouse in Belgium this weekend.As reported by De Standaard and Gazet van Antwerpen, burglars used a fire ladder to climb the roof of the warehouse situated in Antwerp province. Evoluce ONE gives you 47 inches of multitouch surface to play with (video)
We're kind of late to this party, but better late than never, right? At the end of last month, German company Evoluce announced its 47-inch multitouch display, touting Full HD (or 1920 x 1080) resolution and "Integrated-Through-Screen-Optics," which allow it to recognize an unlimited number of simultaneous inputs. The ONE also features haptic feedback and is compatible with Windows 7's multitouch features right out of the box, with support for some "other OS" also planned. Adobe posts Flash 10.1, AIR 2 betas with multi-touch
Adobe today fulfilled earlier promises and provided betas for both Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2. Both are the first from Adobe to have a Flash layer that supports multi-touch input, including gestures. Flash Player specifically gets H.264 hardware decoding through newer video chipsets and, initially for Windows PCs, can significantly reduce the workload on the CPU or a notebook's battery.

ASUS best, HP worst for notebook reliability
A new study published by SquareTrade revealed that the smaller name brand notebook manufacturers are usually more reliable than their larger rivals. Of the top nine, ASUS has the lowest tracked breakdown rate with fewer than 10 percent of its notebooks failing in the past two years. Toshiba, Sony and Apple also have better-than-average performance and are either just over or under the same figure.

Motorola Droid camera autofocus fixed in secrecy?
While we were busy looking into external speaker problems on the Droid, it would seem Moto was itself hard at work remedying a separate issue with the device. Nook for sale at Barnes & Noble stores on November 30th?
If you're looking to pre-order a Nook today you'll be greeted with a December 18th ship date from Barnes & Noble's on-line store. However, if you stop by your Barnes & Noble on November 30th, you might find the Android-based dual-screen ereader in stock and ready to take home for $259 plus the usual government tithe. Als Melodyne DNA (Direct Note Access) letztes Jahr auf der Frankfurter Musikmesse von Celemony erstmals vorgestellt wurde, gab es grosses Hallo und auch eine gehörige Portion Skepsis: mit Melodyne sollte man nämlich nicht nur aus Akkord-Samples einzelne Noten extrahieren und ändern können, sondern sogar aus fertigen Songs einzelne Instrumente. Das gab es bisher noch nicht und von einigen Experten war zu hören, dass es auch unmöglich wäre. Magellan: GPS-Halterung für den iPod touch angekündigt
Magellan ist zumindest in Insiderkreisen seit Jahren als Hersteller von Navigationsgeräten bekannt. Jetzt will sich das Unternehmen seine Scheibe vom großen Kuchen der Navigationslösungen für das iPhone abschneiden und darüber hinaus den iPod touch mit einem GPS-Emfpänger ausstatten.
Neben einem bislang nur mit US-Karten erhältlichen Navigationsprogramm hat Magellan eine Autohalterung explizit mit iPod touch-Unterstützung angekündigt. Zwar gibt es noch keine Informationen zu Preis und Verfügbarkeit, der Wettlauf um das erste GPS-Kit für den iPod touch wird dank der Magellan-Ankündigung aber zweifellos spannender. Im Gespräch für ein derartiges Produkt waren seither schon TomTom, Navigon und DUAL-Electronics - allen Beteiligten dürfte klar sein, dass der Gewinner dieses Wettlaufs zum Verkaufsstart mit enormen Absatzzahlen rechnen kann.

Gartner erhöht erneut Prognose für weltweiten Halbleitermarkt
Gartner hat erneut seine Jahresprognose für den weltweiten Halbleitermarkt erhöht. Gegenüber dem Vorjahr soll er nur noch um 11,4 statt um 17 Prozent schrumpfen. Das Marktforschungsinstitut rechnet 2009 mit einem Branchenumsatz von 226 Milliarden Dollar. Ende August hatte die Voraussage noch sechs Prozent niedriger gelegen.

The first 2.5" 512 GB SSD is here
The first 2,5" 512 GB SSD has arrived on the Japanese stalls. It is a Supertalent ultradrive DX with a quoted data flow of 230 MB/s for reading and 180 MB/s for writing.
One of the arguments against the SSD, their low capacity, has thus fallen. They have almost caught up with the largest discs 2,5" who are available in 9,5 mm at 640 GB. It still will be necessary to wait concerning the price. This SSD is offered at the prohibitive price for most of the population at almost 1350€!

Dell's 5-inch Android Streak MID on AT&T in 2010?
It's not much to go on but after months of rumors and then the sudden appearance of Dell's 5-inch MID on video, well, even unsubstantiated reports from the Commercial Times can be taken with a degree of truthiness. The latest tattle has QISDA manufacturing Dell's Android 2.0-based MID (spotted with a 5 megapixel camera, 800 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, 3G data, and WiFi) with the intent of ramping up for an AT&T launch sometime in 2010. Samsung's Ubicell CDMA base station going 3G in 2010
We're all for upping our cell service in-home, so a few cheers to Samsung for upgrading its Ubicell personal CDMA base station to 3G. Joining the femtocell party in 2010, all we know beyond its primary directive is built-in GPS for more accurate E911 calls. Mum's the word on price, carriers, or any more definitive launch date. Verizon: AT&T sued over 3G ads because "the truth hurts"
Verizon has filed a response to AT&T's lawsuit which had sought a temporary restraining order (TRO) to ban the "there's a map for that" ads critical of the latter carrier's 3G coverage. Verizon defends its ad campaign, claiming the coverage maps are accurate and clearly labeled as 3G networks. AT&T argues that the ads mislead customers to believe the comparison includes 2G coverage.

Mad Catz today dipped into networking with its own wireless bridge. Meant as an alternative to the official Xbox adapter, the Wireless-N Gaming Adapter takes the Ethernet connection from an Xbox 360, 20GB PlayStation 3 or any computer and turns it into an 802.11n Wi-Fi signal. Is Apple trying to rid the App Store of applications created in Flash?
Gizmodo is reporting that Apple has added another layer of protection/rejection to the App Store approval process. According to some (well sourced?) developer Tweets, Apple has added a static analysis tool to look for private API calls inside submitted Apps.
