Smartphone wars: WinMob, Symbian down. iPhone, Blackberry, Android growing

Apple remains ascendant in the smartphone wars, last week's Gartner figures show, with Microsoft’s Windows Mobile shedding 28 percent marketshare inside a year. The latest data shows Microsoft’s mobile market continuing to shrink, falling from 11 percent in Q3 2008 to 7.9 percent in Q3 2009. Apple, meanwhile, continues to generate interest, with a marketshare climbing from 12.9 to 17.1 percent in the same period of time. Frequently rumored to be a Microsoft aquisition target, Research In Motion also fared well, climbing from 16 to 20.8 percent.
