Gerüchte: 32 GB-iPhone und iTunes 8 im Herbst
Einen interessanten Fund weiß MacRumors zu vermelden: Auf einer beim Apple Webservice .Mac gehosteten Internetseite finden sich diverse Grafiken mit neuen Notebook-Designs, einem iTunes 8-Veröffentlichungstermin für Oktober diesen Jahres sowie einer 32 GB iPhone-Ankündigung für Australien.
Alles in allem eigentlich zu viel, um ernst genommen zu werden - wären da nicht auch die mitveröffentlichten gültigen Zugangsdaten für einen auf die E-Mail-Adresse eines Apple-Mitarbeiters registrierten iTunes Store-Account.
MacRumors gibt die Adresse der Seite aufgrund der dort veröffentlichten Nutzerdaten nicht frei, es besteht aber eigentlich kaum Zweifel an der Glaubwürdigkeit der Meldung. Ob bei Apple allerdings wirklich jetzt schon Grafiken für die Ankündigung von iTunes 8 in einem halben Jahr vorbereitet werden, wagen wir stark zu bezweifeln. Bisher werden Intels neue Penryn-CPUs in der Santa-Rosa-Mobilplattform verbaut. Im Sommer steht mit der Montevina-Architektur schon wieder die nächste Generation bereit, die ebenfalls neue Penryn-CPUs mit einem höheren Frontside-Bus verwendet. Laser scanning robot creates 3D map of silver mine

Just 11 months after the DepthX robotic submarine mapped the El Zacatón Cenote, the 3D-R1 has managed to collect over 5GB of map data in 3.5 days which was then used to create a "comprehensive 3D plan of the underground mining operation." Samsung-Chef wegen Steuerhinterziehung vor Gericht
Die südkoreanische Staatsanwaltschaft hat Samsungs Konzernchef Lee Kun Hee wegen Steuerhinterziehung angeklagt. Ihm wird vorgeworfen, rund 1200 Konten unter anderen Namen zu Aktientransaktionen genutzt und etwa 113 Milliarden Won (71,7 Millionen Euro) an Steuern hinterzogen zu haben. Amazon MP3 beats iTunes on album sales, kinda?
iTunes may be the number one US music retailer, but Amazon boss Jeff Bezos thinks he has the Apple service beat in terms of album sales.
Bezos talked business with Fortune this week, it's a wide-ranging chat that covers many of the bases of the giant online retailers international operations and his near-death experience during a fated helicopter ride. And includes the Amazon boss' claim that his MP3 service outsells Apple, at least when it comes to album sales, at least proportionally.
An Amazon spokesman explains: "One exec I know at a big label, who asked to remain anonymous, says he's excited by one trend in particular: At Apple''s iTunes store, two thirds of the music sold is single tracks and one third is albums. But at Amazon, two thirds of the music sold is albums and one third is tracks."

IOGear, who specializes in KVM Switches, announces a new product which could tempt some professionals. It lets you transmit a DVI signal over a distance of 90ft via a simple ethernet cable. To achieve this, one connects the DVI output from one computer to a box that will convert and amplify the signal along the cable to a second box that will restore it bac to a DVI signal. It is also possible to convey sound via cable jack.

Ebay erzielt Umsatzplus von 24 Prozent
Ebay hat im ersten Quartal 2008 (bis 31. März) eine Umsatzsteigerung von 24 Prozent auf 2,192 Milliarden Dollar verzeichnet. Apple's Safari 3.1.1 update is available now. It's a security and stability patch that among other things fixes the vulnerability that was used to hack into a MacBook Pro at the CanSecWest security conference in late February. It's worth noting it took Apple just three weeks to fix this widely-reported vulnerability (which researchers now admit can be used to undermine most platforms running WebKit).

Provider fürchten Online-Durchsuchungen
Der Verband der deutschen Internetwirtschaft eco hat die von der Bundesregierung beabsichtigte Form der Umsetzung der Online-Durchsuchung kritisiert. Insbesondere dürften die Spähangriffe des Bundestrojaners nicht gegen Provider gerichtet werden. Als Anbieter wichtiger Infrastrukturen müssten sie die Integrität ihrer Systeme jederzeit sicherstellen. Provider zu hacken sei weder notwendig noch vertretbar, da der wirtschaftliche Schaden einer durch eine Online-Durchsuchung ausgelösten Vertrauenskrise sowohl für die Provider als auch für ihre Kunden enorm sei.

IBM-Pilotprojekt untersucht Wechsel zum Mac
Eingefleischten und langjährigen Mac-Nutzern ist IBM sehr wohl noch ein bedeutender Begriff. Schließlich fütterte Apple seine Rechner eine lange Zeit mit Prozessoren von IBM, bevor im Jahr 2006 der Wechsel zu Intel-CPUs erfolgte. So ganz vom Mac lassen kann das traditionsreiche Unternehmen aber wohl doch nicht. Denn in einem Pilotprojekt des IBM Research Information Service ließ man nun 24 Mitarbeiter längere Zeit mit einem MacBook Pro und einem firmeneigenen Thinkpad arbeiten.

Apples Marktanteile weiter gestiegen
Am nächsten Mittwoch legt Apple seine Ergebnisse für das erste Quartal 2008 auf den Tisch. Diese werden rund 25 bis 30 Prozent höher ausfallen, als die Zahlen des Vorjahreszeitraums, ermittelten Marktforscher. Exchange-Unterstützung für den Mac?
Technologie-Blogger Christopher Price fragt sich derzeit, ob Apple nach der angekündigten iPhone-Exchange-Kompatibilität auch Macs für die Nutzung mit Microsofts Exchange Server lizenzieren lassen will. She's back: Ellen Feiss in online screening
Famed church of Mac cult figure Ellen Feiss' film, 'Bed and Breakfast' will be broadcast online next week.
The film was shot in France in 2006 and follows a young American couple on vacation in France looking for an old friend who has inherited a castle. It's the debut movie for Feiss, who became an internet celebrity following her appearance in one of the initial "Switch" campaign ads from Apple.
Feiss became a cult figure after her "Switcher" ad aired in 2002. In one unreleased ad, Feiss talked about an Apple PowerBook: "It's really fast and it's silver and I don't have to watch airplane movies any more", she said. Her laid back personality generated huge interest in the teenager, who turned down appearances on The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman in order to lead a normal teenager's life.

IBM: 32 nm Engraving Processing by Year End
IBM seems to have gained some time over competitors in the race towards thinner engraving process, and has decided to heavily communicate about it.
IBM expects to manufacture the first 32 nm engraving-based CPU samples by the end of the year. Thank to a new material, the high-k/metal gate (HKMG), the company expect to increase clock speed by up to 35% when compared to 45 nm engraving-based CPU. In addition, it should also help to save 30 to 50% power consumption
On its side, Intel is not communicating as much as IBM regarding the 32 nm engraving, and we only know that it should happen in 2009. One should also not forget that getting samples does not mean that scaling up to mass production.
Last but not least, it would be nice to get a better usage by OS and applications of the increasing number of cores in our CPUs, what the use of having 8 or 12 cores CPU, engraved at 32 nm, if the system or applications can only benefit from 4 cores

STEC Replied to Seagate Lawsuite
Yesterday, we were mentioning the legal action launched by Seagate against STEC, a small SSD manufacturer.
It did not take long before STEC published an official answer to patent infringement claims from Seagate.
STEC starts by reminding Seagate that they were already building flash memory-based HD in 1994 (as they are developing such products for space and military industries), while Seagate patents were issued in 2005. STEC even think that Seagate might misappropriate STECs core technologies
To conclude STEC cite a fact about which we will almost all agree:
We view this action as Seagate's attempt to slow down the growth that STEC's SSD business is experiencing, particularly in the enterprise segment.

Cyber-Laufband ermöglicht Spaziergang durch virtuelles Pompeji

OpenComputer/Psystar nur heiße Luft?
Noch vor wenigen Tagen machte der Mac-Klon der Firma Psystar Schlagzeilen. Für 400 US-Dollar bot das Unternehmen aus Miami einen PC als verbesserten Mac mini an, der durch einen Hack auch Mac OS X nutzen konnte. Handschrifterkennung für iPhone und iPod touch
Eine ganz besondere "Tastatur" installiert die native iPhone-Anwendung HWPen: Es implementiert eine Handschrifterkennung in das System, die dann beispielsweise in der Notizzettel-Anwendung verfügbar ist. Die Erweiterung kann neben Zahlen und lateinischen Buchstaben auch chinesische Schriftzeichen erkennen, wobei für einige der komplexeren Zeichen vielleicht ein Stylus ratsam ist.
