Update für Safari erschienen
Apple hat ein Update für Safari veröffentlicht. Die Aktualisierung auf Version 3.1.1, die einen Neustart des Macs erfordert, ist 39 MB groß und verbessert laut Apple die Stabilität, Kompatibilität und Sicherheit des Webbrowsers. Gleichzeitig wurde auch eine neue Version für Windows herausgegeben.

Psystar: not quite what it appears to be
Source : Guardian UnlimitedContrary to what its comprehensive and detailed website implies, Psystar appears to be a one-man-show. The Guardian uncovers the truth behind the website, exposing a only the bare bones of what can be considered a "business solutions" company.
Their phone reception system is buggy, won't allow you to leave messages, and only connects you to "support" to talk to a person. Researchers take aim at terahertz computing

FSC erzielt trotz Umsatzrückgang mehr Gewinn
Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC) hat heute seine Zahlen für das Geschäftsjahr 2007 präsentiert. Online media operators want the BBC

The BBC has already encountered a huge success with its iPlayer, which allows online-viewing of many of their programs. They have already had 550,000 visitors. The BBC does not stop there, and proposes a version for the Wii, and after that, for the iPhone.
The reasons for their success are simple. The group has been deadlocked on the DRM and it covers all visibly better. The only current victims of this success are the ISPs. Indeed, if there was an impression of free Web, it is readily apparent. They must pay for the use of the data pipes that their customers use, and videos weigh particularly heavy.
They have come to try and find common ground at the BBC and they request participation in sharing the costs generated by its success. Already operators had tried to do the same with Google and other heavy bandwidth hogs. If it comes here, it will be a new revolution for the Internet,

Apple may plan to introduce not one, not two, but three different iPhone offerings in June, implementing 3G support and offering an iPhone mini to widen the reach of its technology.
Apple's apparently considering a premium model iPhone that's equipped with support for 3G. Larger than the existing model its extra size conceals a battery offering triple the duration of the current generation, with more models too

NVidia Announces 1 Billion Transistors for its Next-Gen GPU
NVidia started unveiling details about the next-generation GPU in its pipeline. Known as GT-200, it should score a new milestone by reaching the mythical barrier of 1 billion transistors, 25% more than the current GPU powering the high-end graphic cards from NVidia. The future flagship might sport up to 200 processing cores instead of the 128 cores of the GF 9800 GTX, and should hit shelves this summer.
Of course one will have to wait for the first test to evaluate if such raw power can really deliver performance boost; but it is nevertheless the first true innovation from NVidia over the past year.

Seagate Warns to Sue SSD Manufacturers
For HD manufacturers, SSD is probably the main challenge to overcome in the coming months and years as many analysts predict SSD will replace plate-based HD in a mid-term future. The reason is also that flash memory manufacturers have been taking the lead of SSD market, and are now ahead when compared to standard HD manufacturers.
Probably as part of a marketing campaign, Seagate CEO recently warned SSD manufacturers for patent infringement if SSD market is really taking off. Indeed, the CEO is convinced that SSD makers like Samsung and Intel are violating Seagate's patents. Most of HD manufacturers own patents related to the ways a storage unit communicates the computer hardware, including all steps. It stands to reason that Seagate will sue if it looks like SSDs could become a real threat.
Seagate already initiated such legal action against a small SSD manufacturer (STEC), probably to easily get a legal decision about this topic. It will then be easy for Seagate to use such judgme

Apple signs new iPhone parts supplier
Apple has signed-up United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC, NYSE) to create chips for the next-generation iPhone.
The move means the end to the sole supplier status enjoyed by former supplier of these particular components, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, according to local reports.
Siliconware Precision Industries Co. will provide packaging and testing of the UMC chips contracted for use in the iPhone, the report adds.
UMC stock currently stands at $3.39 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Damn, sexy huh? That's Sony's 0.2-mm (0.0079-inch) thin OLED display. Granted, this 3.5-inch prototype is only capable of 320 x 220 pixels, just shy of a cellphone standard QVGA resolution. However, that panel's fracking impressive when compared to those relatively chubby 0.67-mm (and that's a world's slimmest), 320 x 240 pixel LCDs capable of just 2.2-inches of display. And just look at those blacks -- you can barely see the bezel.

It was a long time coming, but we finally have a full review of Sony's PFR-V1 "personal field speakers." C|net's intrepid review team took the headphones for a spin and not unsurprisingly found them to be "expensive and impractical" and almost entirely lacking in bass. Goofy looks aside, they did move the music from inside your skull to in front of your face as promised. Of course, that little novelty comes with excessive sound leak to the annoyance of those around you. iPhone for India on Vodafone, September
Apple will release the iPhone in India in September, local reports claim.
The company is partnering with Vodafone India for the launch, which is expected to take place in September. Initial reports claim the 8GB iPhone will be the first model to ship, with a higher-capacity version set to reach the sub-continent in mid-2009. And Vodafone may also pick up the deal as network partner for Australia.
“The carrier deal for India is being worked out with Vodafone,” an Apple source, told the Business Standard, adding: “Vodafone could also become the carrier for the Australian market once iPhone is launched there, though more than one carrier is likely for Australia.”

Der C64-Soundchip-Emulator SIDPLAY wurde auf die Version 4.0 aktualisiert. Deutscher Computerspielemarkt wächst um 30 Prozent
Im deutschen Computerspielemarkt wurden 2007 mit Konsolen sowie mit Spielen für Konsolen und PCs insgesamt 2,3 Milliarden Euro umgesetzt, was einem Plus von knapp 30 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr entspricht. 2006 lagen die Umsätze nach Angaben des Bundesverbands Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (Bitkom) bei 1,77 Milliarden Euro, 2005 noch bei 1,6 Milliarden Euro.

iPhone-Positionsbestimmung fälschen
Seit dem letzten Firmware-Update für iPhone und iPod touch ist eine Wi-Fi-Standortbestimmung Bestandteil der Geräte. Forscher aus Zürich haben nun bewiesen, dass diese Funktion leicht überlistet und mit falschen Daten gefüttert werden kann. Grundlage der iPhone-Funktion ist die Datenbank des Dienstleisters Skyhook, welche über Mac-Adressen die Standorte von WLAN-Access-Points identifiziert.

Intel: Rekordumsatz im ersten Quartal 2008
Die Intel Corporation erzielte im ersten Quartal 2008 einen Rekordumsatz von 9,673 Milliarden US-Dollar, was ein Plus von neun Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal, gleichzeitig aber auch einen saisonal bedingten Rückgang von zehn Prozent zum letzten Quartal bedeutet. Der Nettogewinn hingegen ging deutlich zurück.

Nokias Embedded-Linux soll Qt unterstützen
Bisher setzte Nokias Maemo-Plattform auf die GUI-Bibliothek GTK+ für die grafische Oberfläche und Anwendungen. Doch nach der Trolltech-Übernahme Anfang 2008 will Nokia Maemo nun auch mit dem neu erworbenen Qt-Toolkit ausrüsten, das Entwickler dann für ihre grafischen Bedienoberflächen verwenden können. Im Auto: iPhone- und iPod touch-Halter
DLO stellt mit VentMount eine pfiffige Autohalterung für den iPod touch und das iPhone vor. Mit einem speziellen Clip wird die Halterung an den Lüftungsschlitzen im Armaturenbrett befestigt, der iPod bzw. das iPhone kann in der Halterung um 90 Grad gedreht werden und die Halterung taugt nebenbei auch noch als Gürtelclip sowie als Standbein beim Video gucken.
Der US-Preis liegt bei 25 Dollar, das Case dürfte in wenigen Wochen auch in Deutschland verfügbar sein - vorausgesetzt DLO verkraftet die Übernahme durch den Philips-Konzern gut und wird nicht durch einen bürokratischen Overkill aus der Bahn geworfen.

Thank to this enclosure, one can plug external SATA HDs (eSATA) to the SeriTek/SpyderHUB, then get the data through FireWire or USB2 when connecting the computer to the SeriTek/SpyderHUB. So, one can use eSATA with any Mac, even the Mac Book Air, or use those eSATA HDs as booting volume.
Of course the data transfer speed available will be defined by the slowest connection, so it will be far from being as fast as native eSATA. If such converters are also found in eSATA enclosures too, here FirmTek added an extra value by turning it into a multiport hub. Starbucks said it would transition to AT&T-provided WiFi sometime this spring, and it looks like T-Mobile's getting the boot right on schedule. The first Starbucks to switch over is just 4.2 miles away from AT&T corporate headquarters in San Antonio, at 5321 South Broadway Road, and the rest of the country should come on market-by-market. iPhone price cut in the UK
Source : TechradarJust like in Germany with T-Mobile, O2 will (probably) slash its iPhone prices in the UK starting from tomorrow. The 8Gb model will be £100 off, it will only cost £169.
We're waiting for Orange (France) now, it's their turn to lower their prices too, to around £250, which will definitely boost iPhone sales.
And, just like in Germany, the promotion will only apply to the 8Gb model. It's possible that Apple will only offer 16 and 32 Gb models for the new 3G iPhone, thus boosting the storage capacity.
