Just when we were getting used to T-Mobile's Shadow, it appears we're going to have to make room in our pockets for its successor the Shadow II. Picking up almost exactly where the first iteration left off, this grainy spy shot reveals that its going to be more of the same for the revamp, save for some new rounded edges and oh-so-chic reflective finish. Google macht KML zum offenen Standard
Google hat die Kontrolle über das XML-Format KML (Keyhole Markup Language) an die internationale Standardisierungsorganisation Open Geospacial Consortium (OGC) abgegeben. Two Gartner analysts have pilloried Microsoft in a recently-published scathing analysis. Arcor muss YouPorn nicht mehr sperren - seit Februar 2008

Mac: Podview erleichtert den iPod-Export
Ein ganz kurzer Hinweis auf ein kleines Mac-Tool, das wir bislang noch nicht in den News hatten. Podview ist nicht mal 1MB groß und erlaubt euch den Inhalt beliebiger iPods auf eurem Mac anzuzeigen, abzuspielen, zu exportieren (bzw. direkt in eure iTunes-Bibliothek zu verschieben) und zu durchsuchen. Das kleine Utility kommt mit einem integrierten Music-Player und sortiert den iPod-Inhalt ähnlich übersichtlich wie iTunes. Landkartenformat KML wird offener Standard
Google hat sein in Google Earth verwendetes XML-Format "Keyhole Markup Language" (KML) an das Open Geospacial Consortium (OGC) übergeben, die es als offenen Standard anerkannt und fortan die Kontrolle über das Format haben. O2 plans £100 iPhone price cut
O2 is set to cut £100 off the price of the iPhone tomorrow, a report claims. The news follows a similar price cut earlier this month by Apple's Germany iPhone partner, T-Mobile.
As predicted by 9 to 5 Mac in February, when we reported plans to cut prices on the device "perhaps as late as mid-April". Mobile Today is now reporting plans to impose a £100 discount on the iPhone.
The discount will reportedly be announced tomorrow. The original report suggests iPhone stocks are falling in the UK, France and US, stating that the price cut suggests Apple is moving to introduce a new model of the device, introducing 3G support.

Neue ReTune-Version am Horizont
ReTune haben wir bereits hier ausführlich vorgestellt (noch mehr Infos). Für alle die das kostenlose Tool noch nicht kennen, hier noch mal die kurze Zusammenfassung: ReTune, gedacht für all jene die sich nicht mit iTunes anfreunden können, ermöglicht die iPod-Nutzung mit minimalem Verwaltungsaufwand. Den iPod als Wechselfestplatte an Mac- oder Windows-Rechner angeschlossen lassen sich MP3s gleich ordnerweise auf ihn kopieren, reTune kümmert sich dann im Anschluss um die Erstellung der passenden Datenbanken und macht das ganze spielbar.
Die nun angekündigte Version 0.4.0 erreicht uns in den kommenden Tagen und durchläuft gerade noch das obligatorische private-Beta-Test Programm. Das Warten dürfte sich aber lohnen. ReTune unterstützt mit dem baldigen Update alle neueren iPod-Modelle, kommt nun auch mit Videos zurecht und b

Betrugsversuch kündigt SMS-Telegramm an
Wie die Süddeutsche Zeitung berichtet, versuchen Kriminelle derzeit mit einer neuen Methode, Handy-Besitzer um ihr Geld zu bringen. Mobilfunknutzer erhalten eine SMS, in der sie aufgefordert werden, mit einer Antwort und dem Stichwort "Kati" ein dringendes SMS-Telegramm abzurufen. Die Beantwortung der SMS versteht der Betreiber Server-Tel allerdings als Buchung von 70 SMS zu je 85 Cent.

Kontrollsystem findet schwarze Löcher im Internet
Forscher der Universität Washington in Seattle haben ein Kontrollsystem namens Hubble entwickelt, das die Wege von verschwundenen E-Mails und fehlgeschlagenen Seitenanfragen nachvollziehbar macht. Nach Angaben der Forscher konnte auf diese Weise nachgewiesen werden, dass während einer dreiwöchigen Testphase im September 2007 rund sieben Prozent der Computer weltweit mindestens einmal von verschwundenen digitalen Informationen betroffen gewesen sind. Insgesamt ortete das System seitdem knapp 900.000 sogenannte schwarze Löcher im Internet.

Einer der vielen Gründe, Apple zu lieben ist die Tatsache, dass sie direkt aus der Verpackung heraus einfach funktionieren. Nur in einigen wenigen Fällen gibt es mal Probleme, jüngst besonders auf dem Display-Sektor. Die 13-Zoll-MacBooks und die 15-Zoll-MacBook-Pros setzen eine traurige Serie von Grafik-Fehlern fort. Bejeweled ist wieder zu haben
Letzte Woche wütete Apple mit der Axt in der Spielzeugabteilung ihres iTunes Stores. Einige der noch nicht für die aktuellen iPod-Modelle (classic, nano 3G) verfügbaren Spiele verschwanden ohne jede Spur aus den virtuellen Regalreihen. Verkaufszahlen: PS3 erneut stärker als Xbox 360

HD 3870 mit GDDR3 schneller als mit GDDR4?
Da GDDR4-Speicher höher getaktet ist als GDDR3-Speicher, muss dieser auch schneller sein. Ohne Zweifel, der Logik nach müsste diese Aussage zutreffen. Bis jetzt war es aber nicht möglich (und wurde wohl auch von keinem für nötig gehalten), diese Aussage zu überprüfen.

Zwar haben unsere Schweizer Nachbarn das Glück, mit einer wesentlichen geringeren Mehrwertsteuer leben zu müssen als wir, trotzdem kommen bei den Produktpreisen häufig noch andere Abgaben oder Steuern hinzu. So bisher auch beim Kauf eines iPods, denn hier wurde eine nicht eben geringe Urheberabgabe fällig. Doch die Schweizer Urheberrechtsgesellschaften geben nun nach und senken die Gebühren für Flashspeicher rückwirkend zum 1. April.

MacMinute-Gründer Stan Fleck gestorben
Was wäre die Welt ohne Mac-Neuigkeiten, täglich aktuell und immer frisch serviert? Zu berichten gibt es genug und das bereits seit über einem Jahrzehnt. Seit 1994 war Stan Flack als Mit-Gründer der Publikation MacCentral und später der Newsseite MacMinute aus dieser Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Er schuf das zunächst wöchentlich erscheinende Mac-Blatt MacCentral und startete dann zu Beginn des Internet-Booms MacMinute.com. Am gestrigen 14. April starb er im Alter von nur 42 Jahren an den Komplikationen einer Vorerkrankung.

Neuer Computer: iPod touch Apps weg
Ein Tipp aus dem iFUN-Forum:
Problem: Neuer Computer gekauft und eingerichtet, nach einer Wiederherstellung des iPod touch (ohne Verwendung eines Backup) sind die gekauften Zusatzprogramme Mail, Maps und Konsorten verschwunden.
Lösung: Vorausgesetzt der alte Computer oder ein Backup davon ist noch verfügbar, kopiert man die Datei "Anwendungsdaten\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Applications\Pod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" (Windows) bzw. "Library\iTunes\Mobile Applications\Pod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" (Mac) aus dem Benutzerordner des alten Computers an die selbe Stelle auf dem neuen Computer. Danach einmal Synchronisieren und die Programme sind wieder verfügbar.

Video problems with portables containing the Penryn
Source : APCMag A video display problem affects certain portables containing the Penryn processor, the very latest generation.
It is characterized by this type of corruption of the image.
Strangely, it affects both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro which have radically different graphic solutions. It appears that the next update of Mac OS X, or all at least its beta, regulates the problem, which is good news.
If one encounters many less hardware problems than two years ago, Apple obviously suffers from the evil eye with the software.
It was already necessary to wait many weeks recently so that Mac Pro can wake up from sleep normally!

Apple TV: Update und neue Menüs
Besitzer von Apples Set-Top-Box können über das Menü Einstellungen die Aktualisierung der Gerätesoftware auf Version 2.0.2 starten. Das Update bringt keine augenscheinlichen Verbesserungen, demnach dürfte es sich um Kompatibilitätsanpassungen und Fehlerbehebungen handeln.
Bei dieser Gelegenheit wäre aber zu erwähnen, dass Apple wie erwartet im Menü TV-Sendungen nachgebessert hat. Dort lassen sich die im deutschen iTunes Store erhältlichen Fernsehserien nun auch nach TV-Stationen oder Top-TV-Sendungen sortiert anzeigen. Screenshots gibts nach dem Klick.
