IBM rolls out systems based on "fastest chip on Earth"

It's not the first time IBM has tossed around "world's fastest" language when discussing its Power6 processors, but the company's now found reason to boast again, with it recently announcing that it's released some new supercomputers based on its new "world's most powerful microprocessor." Getting that distinction is IBM's latest Power 575 "Hydro-Cluster" supercomputer which, thanks to some nifty in-rack water-cooling measures, is able to accommodate the company's speedy new 5GHz Power6 processor. FCC gives national SMS alert system stamp of approval

Canon's building on its well-received XL H1 prosumer, interchangeable-lens video camera with the new XL H1S and XL H1A. iTunes to seize 28% global music sales by 2012
The latest series of digital music reports are in, and they suggest Apple could account for 28 per cent or more of global music sales by 2012; that's fairly impressive for a service which only launched on April 28, 2003.
The understanding that Tunes may one day account for a quarter of global music sales comes through the extrapolation of data from a series of recent reports. These reports suggest digital sales will soon stem the continued meltdown in music retail.

This server is based on the Power 6 processor running between 4,2 to 5 Ghz. It will be proposed in configurations going from 8 up to 64 cores; with 64 cores this will be the fastest Unix machine in the world.
To cool these monsters in a restricted space, IBM has chosen watercooling that one hopes is more long lasting than that of the Powermac G5.
Here are some additional figures to give you an idea of its capacities:
- Each processor has 8 cores and each core has 4MB of L2 cache and 32 MB of L3 cache per chip. Each CPU is associated with 16 or 32 memory connectors.
- There are 16 disk slots.
- There are 20 connectors PCI-X.

Apple räumt um: 1 iPod-Spiel aktualisiert, 7 gekickt
Das Durcheinander mit iPod-Spielen für die verschiedenen Generationen hat ein Ende: Apple hat mit Zuma ein weiteres ehemaliges 5G-Spiel auch für die Verwendung mit den neuen iPod nano-Modellen und dem iPod classic freigegeben und die restlichen sieben Spiele, die ausschließlich für iPods der fünften Generation verfügbar waren, aus dem iTunes Store entfernt.
Fortan gibt es im Bereich iPod-Spiele des iTunes Store nur noch eine Liste mit Spielen, die auf iPods der 5. Generation, dem iPod classic sowie dem neuen iPod nano der 3. Generation laufen. Das auch in Deutschland verfügbare Internetportal Last.fm hatte offenbar den richtigen Riecher, als im Januar die neuen Marketingkonzepte umgesetzt wurden. Neben dem Streaming eines individuellen Radiosenders können Nutzer seit Anfang des Jahres auch direkt alle Titel bis zu dreimal in voller Länge von der Startseite aus abspielen und werden dann erst auf die Kaufoption verwiesen. Details on the new iPhone 3G to Come
TG Daily is not really a rumors-type of website, and one should consider information published as reliable. According to them, Apple would release 2 version, with the same price tag, 399 USD for the 8GB unit and et 499 USD for the 16 GB model. An optional version featuring 32 GB of storage space would cost 100 USD more.
The iPhone 3G would be thinner than the first revision (2.5mm less) and its design slightly revisited to eliminate as much as possible the "plastic-touch" of some part of the device. The accelerometer sensor might have been tuned while the remaining GUI and software part would remain unchanged; otherwise it would have made developer's life a nightmare with a just not fully released iPhone SDK

Einstellungsdateien von OS X überprüfen lassen
Für das Abstürzen eines Programmes unter Mac OS X kann es viele Ursachen geben; ein häufiger Grund dafür sind fehlerhafte Einstellungsdateien. Zwar bietet Mac OS X ab Leopard schon von Haus aus an, nach dem zweiten "Abschmieren" einer Applikation besagte Dateien neu anzulegen, doch für Systemprogramme gibt es das (noch) nicht. Der Entwickler Jon Nathan hat deshalb ein Skript geschrieben, das alle Einstellungsdateien des Systems auf formale Fehler überprüft und anbietet, korrupte Dateien neu anlegen zu lassen.

Maybe the Cell will get into our Macs through the back door
Almost at the same time as Toshiba abandoned the format HD-DVD, one learned that Sony had agreed to sell their manufacturing equipment to them to produce the Cell processors and to give them 60% share of a joint venture based on this processor.
Some see this as a compensation or an incentive for Toshiba to throw in the sponge quickly. Toshiba had not joined the Blu-ray camp and had announced that they wanted to focus on the online distribution of HDs.
They intend to propose accelerator cards charts using the Cell processor. They will be able to decode and encode the MPEG-2 and H.264 on the fly and will be in the form of PCI-Express cards.
In order to reduce the consumption of this processor, Toshiba will run them at 1,5 GHz (against 3,2 in the PS3),a frequency sufficient for this use and allows the power to remain between 10 and 20W.

SlingCatcher delayed again, this time until "sometime in 2008"

We've been waiting to get our hands on the SlingCatcher ever since it was announced at CES in 2007 (and re-announced at this past CES) but it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer -- Gregg Wilkes, Sling's VP of sales, has said the product won't be released this quarter as scheduled, but rather sometime later this year. Think tank envisions robots filling jobs en masse in Japan
