Wii Pong: the Twilight Princess hack evolves

Those hackers work fast. Two days ago, we saw a demo of the Zelda: Twilight Princess exploit, which allowed for the possibility of Nintendo's Wii to boot homebrew code off of SD cards via stack smashing (buffer overflow). Now a clever coder named Auby has gone ahead and extended the hack to load an ELF version of Pong which was originally coded for the GameCube. Right now the controls aren't functioning, but it appears that this is a work in progress, so we should be seeing updates to it soon. HARV gives soldiers a robot's-eye view

LG aims for Android handsets by 2009

UK blames sat navs for damaging 2,000 bridges per year

iTunes startet weiteres London Music Festival
Letzten Juni erst wurde im iTunes Store die Rubrik "iTunes Festival" eingeführt, in der Live-Mitschnitte von speziellen, von Apple ausgerichteten Konzerten verkauft werden. Im Juli fanden schließlich die ersten "intimen Live-Auftritte" in London statt. Jetzt setzt der iTunes Store die erfolgreiche Veranstaltung fort und richtet ab 21. Februar bis zum 2. März insgesamt elf weitere Konzerte aus.

The European commission has decided to seriously strike some large corporate to demonstrate that the EU authorities are considering suspected monopoly cases as serious. German police forces have carried out a search in Intel headquarter in Munich as well as in headquarters of the founder's partners (including distributors and resellers)
If this is not really new, the scale of the police actions must have been a surprise for Intel executives, and no doubt AMD is most likely thinking of ways to benefit from such problems affecting its historical competitor.

Europäische Mobilfunkbetreiber wehren sich
Die Vereinigung der Mobilfunkbetreiber hat sich jetzt gegen die Forderung der Europäischen Kommission gewehrt, die Roaming-Preise für die mobile Datennutzung im Ausland zu reduzieren. Nach Ansicht der GSM Association (GSMA), die die Mobilfunkbetreiber vertritt, fallen die Preise ohnehin schon. England looking at the French graduated response to piracy
There is no longer the slightest doubt. Soon P2P networks will be under close surveillance and "pirates" will be warned before eventually (3rd time) their Internet subscription will be terminated for one year and they will be blacklisted, making any new subscription impossible during that period.
England seems to have appreciated this method of enforcement and is (hastily) considering its adoption.
It must be said that this approach has the benefit of enforcing sanctions against pirates that is totally different and far less traumatic than those proposed previously (by our freinds from the RIAA, amongst others), those being heavy fines and possible imprisonment(and lots of legal fees).

Microsoft friendly bid for Yahoo turns hostile
Following the announcement of the board of Yahoo to refuse the offer from Microsoft to purchase it, Microsoft have increased the pressure and has addressed shareholders directly in an attempt to convince them of the commercial merits of their offer.
It appears that MS is now moving towards a hostile takeover of the coveted company. This solution may cost them much more than 44 billion, since other interested parties, such as Google, could raise the stakes in the rush to gain control.

A good way to reinstall the system on a MacBook Air
Given the limited size of the hard disks of MacBook Air, the majority of owners will certainly want to reinstall its system, so that unused languages and printers drivers can be purged.
If you have bought the external DVD unit, it is very simple. Connect it and restart the machine holding the ALT key- and at this moment insert the DVD which will mount in some seconds. Attention: the DVD unit does not power up immediately. Avoid using force otherwise you risk causing damage. Also avoid moving the unit when it is in use and turning it around its cable - this causes the DVD to rub!
If you did not get the DVD unit, you will have to do the installation using CD/DVD sharing. While waiting for Mac OSX 10.5.2 (now available) the software could be found on the DVD installation disks of the MacBook Air. Install them and restart
You will have access to this option in the Sharing option of the system preference.
You will just need to start 'Remote Install MacOSX' found in the Utilities fold

NVidia dresses up its old chips and calls them new
Source : Hardware.frNVidia will shortly announce its new reference of video cards for portable computers - the 9500M GS and the 9300M GT.
If you believe that these products will find their way into the next MacBook Pro thus the release must be imminent - you should know that you are being fooled. In effect the 9500 GS is already installed in the Santa Rosa machines.
NVidia has not created anything new - it has been content just to change the name of the old chips. The 9300M GT is identical to the old 8400M GT and the 9500M GS is a perfect copy of the 8600M GT already fitted in the MBP for several months!
Certainly the uninformed will believe that thay are buying a more powerful product, something that marketing department will do nothing to disavow.

Flash on iPod Touch and iPhone?
We've got conflicting reports on this one so we'll just lay it all out on the table. One of our sources who apparantly gets to play with upcoming iPhone builds says there is no Flash on the upcoming builds. However, Gearlive, who outted the iPhone/iPod 1.1.3 software about three weeks before it went live, says they have seen it.
As Gearlive says, if it is coming a great time to announce it would be at the SDK event.
Personally, Flash is nice but we'd rather see Apple focus on things like an iChat client or full stereo Bluetooth capability - but we'll take what we can get.

iPhone iPod touch 1.1.3 Hack for the rest of us
OK, truth be told, we hacked our 1.1.3 iPhone a few weeks ago - but it was a pain in the a$$. Took a few hours and we had to upgrade, downgrade, sidegrade etc. A lot of people who aren't as stupid/bored/daring have taken a pass on the 1.1.3 jailbreak until something easier came along. Android - So far, so Craptastic
We know it is early and the hardware is pre-Alpha but it is hard to see this thing catching up to even last year's iPhone very soon. With Microsoft buying Danger and Sony going to WM6 and other Symbian and WM6 players considering Android the cell phone market seems to be in disarraythe iPhone (which is the likely cause of the industry fire drill) just keeps looking more solid.

Intel and Nokia working on seamless WiFi / WiMAX switchoffs

We've seen a lot of research and even some products that promise seamless WiFi / cell roaming, but Intel and Nokia are cooking up tech that might one day bring us true uninterrupted broadband connectivity, based on automatic undetectable switchovers from WiFi to WiMAX. Intel's posted up a brief video demoing the tech auto-switching without interrupting a video conferencing session on a laptop, but it's easy to imagine the potential application on a mobile phone or UMPC -- dare to dream after the break.[Via

Über Apple TV im iTunes Store shoppen
Mit Apples Set-Top-Box Apple TV lässt sich jetzt auch bequem im iTunes Store shoppen. Das riesige Angebot an Filmen und Fernsehserien der amerikanischen Stores bleibt uns zwar noch vorbehalten, immerhin lässt sich in Deutschland bereits Musik per Fernbedienung in Apples Onlineshop erstehen.
Voraussetzung ist natürlich ein iTunes Kundenkonto. Die Einkäufe werden direkt auf das Apple TV heruntergeladen und von dort bei der nächsten Synchronisierung auch in die iTunes Mediathek des verbundenen Rechners übertragen. Die Einkäufe lassen sich bei Platzbedarf direkt auf dem Apple TV löschen, in iTunes bleiben die Titel selbstverständlich erhalten.

Android - So far, so Craptastic
We know it is early and the hardware is pre-Alpha but it is hard to see this thing catching up to even last year's iPhone very soon. With Microsoft buying Danger and Sony going to WM6 and other Symbian and WM6 players considering Android the cell phone market seems to be in disarraythe iPhone (which is the likely cause of the industry fire drill) just keeps looking more solid.

Apple TV 2.0 Update
As announced by Steve Jobs at the MWSF almost a month ago, it's finally available for the public! (Thanks to Jean-Jacques for the info).
This 2.0 update gives users the possibility to rent movies, buy music online (iTunes Store) and view both Flickr and .Mac slideshows, it also brings support for 5.1 HD sound.
The update is available through Apple TV.
