Apple TV "Take Two" - Das Update ist da
Nach eine langen Verzögerung gerade veröffentlicht, hat Apple heute nun das auf der Macworld gegebene Versprechen - ein Software-Update und mehr Funktionalität für das Apple TV - eingelöst. Zu beziehen über das im Apple TV integrierte Update-Feature, bringt euch der 20-minütige Download nun den Movie-Rental-Store (dieser dürfte mit einem entsprechenden US-Account auch problemlos in Deutschland zu nutzen sein), eine neue Video-Sequenz zum Start, Zugriff auf Flickr, ein komplett überarbeitetes On-Screen Interface und die Möglichkeit das Apple TV nun auch als entfernte Speaker in iTunes anzuwählen. Apple TV (take 2), take two

We got some good time in with Apple's take 2 (i.e. v2.0) software update at Macworld this year, but now that it's out we had to put the spurs to it. We'll be updating with more as we go, but for right now here's what you need to know:
The update itself took us under five minutes to download, but over ten minutes to install. Our first try failed out. Also, get used to seeing that loading bar screen, it cycled through about five times for us.

News: T-Mobile to offer iPhone in Austria
Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile unit will begin selling the iPhone in Austria in the first half of 2008, according to T-Mobile chief executive Hamid Akhavan. Motorola gets snubbed again, Samsung won't be buying either

NVidia launches its first standalone CPU

The growing success of the iPhone and other smartphones has prompted NVidia to announce its first processor, the APX 2500, which will be aimed at such devices.
Based on an ARM core CPU, it use Nvidia's expertise in 3D acceleration with a chip able to decode and encode video in 720p.
It will also be able to handle cameras with a resolution of up to 12 million pixels.
NVidia clearly indicates that its target is mobile devices running Windows Mobile with support for Direct3D. The manufacturer leaves the door open to other systems (Mac OS), and will also be compatible Open GL.
Samples of the APX 2500 have already been distributed to interested manufacturers. Mass production will start during the spring.

Laut dem Gesetzesvorschlag erhalten die betroffenen Online-Piraten beim ersten Verstoß eine Warnung per E-Mail, beim zweiten Mal werden sie vorübergehend gesperrt und beim dritten Mal endgültig aus dem Verkehr gezogen.

News: T-Mobile to offer iPhone in Austria
Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile unit will begin selling the iPhone in Austria in the first half of 2008, according to T-Mobile chief executive Hamid Akhavan. T-Mobile already offers the iPhone in Germany. Last November, Austrian T-Mobile chief Robert Chvatal said that the company would offer the iPhone sometime this year. Akhavan also said that T-Mobile would launch the first Google Android phone in the fourth quarter.

Nokia: GPS-Tracking zur Umgehung von Verkehrsstaus
In Kalifornien wurde ein Feldversuch abgeschlossen, bei dem Nokia-Smartphones mit GPS-Empfänger benutzt wurden, um die Position von Verkehrsteilnehmern aufzuzeichnen. Le MacBook Air takes along time to recharge
Apple markets the Air MacBook with a small 45W charger. By way of comparison, the MacBook has a 60W charger and the MacBook Pro 85W.
MacFixit reported that it would be a little small for the machine. In the case of intensive use, plugged in, the battery will virtually not recharge at all. A completely discharged battery can take 8 hours to be recharge fully, which is too long. Appleinsider reports that the time is reduced to 5 hours using the charger from a MacBook ( which requires raising machine for connecting the larger MagSafe ).
Note: It looks like a bug to conclude that the (re)charge is much faster on an off-machine as compared to a machine-on-standby, since consumption in standby is very low.
It is also possible that Apple preferred a slow battery charger to prevent the risk of a dramatically swelling battery (as has been the case on some MacBook P

Flash on iPod Touch and iPhone?
We've got conflicting reports on this one so we'll just lay it all out on the table. One of our sources who apparantly gets to play with upcoming iPhone builds says there is no Flash on the upcoming builds. However, Gearlive, who outted the iPhone/iPod 1.1.3 software about three weeks before it went live, says they have seen it.
As Gearlive says, if it is coming a great time to announce it would be at the SDK event.
Personally, Flash is nice but we'd rather see Apple focus on things like an iChat client or full stereo Bluetooth capability - but we'll take what we can get.

Aperture akzeptiert neue RAW-Formate von 10.5.2 nicht
Nach dem Betriebssystem-Update auf Mac OS X 10.5.2 wurden auch die unterstützten RAW-Formate ausgeweitet. Was allerdings in Vorschau und iPhoto hervorragend funktioniert, ist unter Aperture nicht möglich - das Programm erkennt derzeit die neuen RAW-Dateien noch nicht. Der Ärger der Anwender ist entsprechend groß.

Analysten fordern verlängerten Verkauf von Windows XP
Analysten von Gartner und der Burton Group haben jetzt verlangt, dass Windows XP mindestens noch bis 2009 in den Regalen stehen soll. Damit schließen sie sich einer Forderung des Online-Computermagazins Infoworld.com an, das mit einer Petition den Verkaufsstopp von Windows XP Ende Juni 2008 verhindern möchte. - Best Buy has announced they'll support Blu-ray in their stores. They will still offer HD-DVD, but Blu-ray media and players wil get the best places on the shelves.
- NetFlix, a movie rental service, will leave HD-DVD somewhere later this year.
Toshiba's HD-DVD players are selling for as low as $112, or less than €100, for the HD-A20 (1080p compatible), they're not selling as well as expected apparently.
But still Toshiba is not giving up yet, it probably takes Paramount to leave HD-DVD before they'll admit their loss.

LG zeigt in Barcelona eine Konzeptstudie zu einem Mobilfunkkarmband-Handy. Das Armband mit Mobilfunktechnik und etwa einem Zoll Bilddiagonale soll sich zum Telefonieren, SMS-Empfang und als Musikplayer nutzen lassen. Who has forgotten a track on the pcb?
In order to test a Mac Pro with a non standard configuration, we recovered a (very expensive) Apple RAID card. For both generations of the MacPro this card is installed in the PCI Express slots on top and takes over control of the 4 hard disks iinstead of the mother card.
On close study of this card, we are surprised to find this:
A line has been added to the pcb by hand using a thin piece of wire. The work has been done in best way possible and this story is more an anecdote rather than a real problem. Apple has done a similar thing with the bipro card in certain macs. Knowing that they took nearly a month to deliver this card, it is possible that this do-it-yourself was set up to ensure compatibility with the last Mac Pro.

Toshiba bringt HSUPA-Smartphone
Toshiba zeigt auf dem Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona mit dem G810 sein erstes Smartphone, das neben HSDPA auch HSUPA unterstützt. Damit ist der schnelle Upload von Dateien via Internet möglich. iCab 4.0 - der alternative Webbrowser jetzt Cocoa-basiert
Die älteren werden sich erinnern, zu Zeiten von Mac OS 9, lange bevor es Mac OS X gab, surfte der Mac-Anwender entweder mit dem Netscape Navigator oder mit Microsofts Internet Explorer. AAPL-Talfahrt nach Citibank-Analyse gestoppt
Mit Weltwirtschaftskrisen ist das so eine Sache: Haben sie einen Markt erst einmal erfasst, beginnt eine kaum noch zu stoppende Rallye, deren Kurs steil nach unten führt. Ein Faktor, der auch das Apple-Wertpapier nicht unberührt ließ. Neue Xen-Version von Citrix
Citrix hat die erste neue Version seiner kommerziellen Xen-Variante angekündigt, seit das Unternehmen XenSource gekauft hat. Gear Live berichtet, dass in Kürze mit Flash-Unterstützung auf dem iPhone zu rechnen ist. Die Internetseite lag bereits bei der Ankündigung der "zitternden" Icons auf dem iPhone richtig. Neuer Chip von Samsung könnte iPhone-Videofähigkeiten verbessern
Geht die Reise für zukünftige iPhones in Richtung Intels Silverthorne-Plattform oder bleibt Apple Samsung treu? Samsung hat auf dem Mobile World Congress in Barcelona einen neuen Chip vorgestellt, der für das iPhone geeignet sein könnte. Im S3C6410 sind die ARM-CPU (667 MHz) und Video-Hardware zur De-/Enkodierung vereint. Gerade letzterer Bereich würde die CPU bei der Wiedergabe von Formaten wie H.264 deutlich entlasten. Nebenbei ist der Chip in der Lage, die Aufnahme von Videos mit einer Auflösung von 640x480 zu verkraften.

Digitalradio für iPhone und iPod touch?
GCap Media betreibt rund 90 digitale Radiosender in Großbritannien. Jetzt hat die GCap-Chefin Fru Hazlitt so ganz nebenbei erwähnt, dass ihre Firma zusammen mit Apple digitales Radio auf das iPhone (und vermutlich auch auf den iPod touch) bringen will: "She also announced a new tie-up with Apple enabling people to listen to digital radio on their iPhone" schreibt Macworld UK.

iPhone sales vs Windows Mobile phone sales figures...
There have been several reports on the Internet quoting Microsoft's sales figure of 14.3 million Windows Mobile phones sold in 2nd half of 2007. This has been picked up by Windows fan sites such as Supersite for Windows and endorsed without any clarifications. Some observations :
1. Microsoft's figures are worldwide. Note that Apple only started selling iPhones in the UK and Germany half way through 2H of 2007. Whilst sales in France were in the last month of 2007. The figures quoted by Canalys only relate to the US market, which given the limited number of countries officially selling outside of the US, makes it more useful as a yard-stick indicator of growth :

Digital radio OFFICIALLY coming to the iPhone
Jonny Evans at Macworld UK caught the Guardian outing digital radio by Apple. The guardian quoted:
She said the greatest growth opportunities for the company's radio stations were on FM and broadband. She also announced a new tie-up with Apple enabling people to listen to digital radio on their iPhone.

The discussion boards lit up almost immediately this evening with word that 10.5.2 and Linotype Font Explorer (which has quickly become a challenger for the industry standard font-management app) do not play nice together. It appears that FX makes other apps and the dock hang until you force-quit the font manager.

Vmedia's cellphone optical disk system is probably not the next big thing

Seeing as cellphones are usually connected to mobile networks, we'd think the problem of content distribution would basically solve itself, but a company called Vmedia Research is at Mobile World Congress with a new type of optical disk designed just for phones. Digital radio OFFIALLY coming to the iPhone
Jonny Evans at Macworld UK caught the Gardian outing digital radio by Apple.
She said the greatest growth opportunities for the company's radio stations were on FM and broadband. She also announced a new tie-up with Apple enabling people to listen to digital radio on their iPhone.

Starbucks drops Tmobile and goes with AT&T AND free 2 hours of browsing, iPhone access?
Big news day today - especially for us coffee addicts. Starbucks has announced that it was dropping its T mobile wifi access points around the world and going with AT&T. The new deal will give free wireless access to Starbucks card holders and AT&T broadband users and charge about half of what T mobile charged for WiFi access. $3.99/visit or $20/month.
Now this deal has Apple written all over it for a number of reasons - not just because taking your MacBook to Starbucks will be a whole lot cheaper. Starbucks and AT&T are also iPhone partners. Starbucks sells it's music to iPhone and iPod Touch users through its Wifi Music store (now run by AT&T). AT&T is obviously the carrier for the iPhone.

Microsoft says "We got nuthin!" buys Danger/Sidekick platform
Microsoft should really be scaring its shareholders and partners these days. First it throws almost $50 Billion at Yahoo! for a portfolio that largely mirrors the functionality (or supposed fuctionality) of its MSN properties and an advertising division that has the same issues that it does. That and everyone in the Tech world is wondering what value Yahoo could offer Microsoft?
Today it puts its Windows Mobile line in question by acquiring Danger. Danger built the Sidekick device platform that is very popular with the consumer smartfphone public, but has faltered recently because of the superior Symbian and iPhone operating systems and the Sidekick's tier 2 hardware made by Sharp and Motorola. As you can imagine, the news generated a lot of excitement -- particularly from the folks at eBay, who decided it would be a sweet item to feature on their homepage.
