Facebook now lets you share your consumerism with linked pages

iPad flies off of car roof, wedges itself into another car's bumper
A few days ago, the above picture began making the rounds on social media sites. No, your eyes aren't deceiving you -- that's an iPad wedged securely into a car's front bumper.
Now thanks to ABC57 news, we have more information as to what happened and how the iPad landed in such an unusual place.
A Georgia woman claims that she was driving down the road when she saw an object flying in her direction. Though she didn't hear a huge impact, upon exiting her car later in the day she noticed an iPad had wedged itself securely in her front bumper. Indeed, the iPad was so firmly in place that a hammer was needed to extract it.

IDC: PC shipments in Q1 faced their steepest known drop to date
If Windows 8 is the ticket to a bounce-back in PC sales, it's going to be a long, slow recovery. At least, as long as you ask IDC. It estimates that worldwide computer shipments in the first quarter of 2013 fell 13.9 percent to 76.3 million, which is the steepest quarterly drop the research firm has recorded since it started tracking PCs back in 1994. Foursquare 6.0 for iOS puts discovery features at forefront
Check-in service Foursquare has released v6.0 of its iPhone app, making some significant changes. TUAW TV Live: Tools and toys
Today on TUAW TV Live, the topic is tools and toys. For bloggers, the most popular tools are text editors, and I'll have a live demo of Ulysses III on the show today. Megan Lavey-Heaton wrote up a nice review of this text editor from The Soulmen a few days ago, and I was impressed enough by what she said that I ended up buying Ulysses III and its iOS counterpart Daedalus. Apple's U.S. Mac Shipments Fall 7.5% as Overall PC Market Plunges 14% Year-Over-Year
Research firm IDC today released its preliminary calculations of PC shipments for the first quarter of 2013, finding the worst year-over-year performance in the nearly 20-year history of its tracking studies. According to IDC's numbers, the worldwide PC market declined nearly 14% compared to the first quarter of 2012, with the U.S. market declining by nearly 13%.Despite some mild improvement in the economic environment and some new PC models offering Windows 8, PC shipments were down significantly across all regions compared to a year ago. Samsung Galaxy S4 undressed on camera, found to be easily repairable
If you damage the microUSB connector, SIM slot or camera module on Samsung's new Galaxy S4, you may not need to spend a lot of time or cash swapping in replacements. Leaked roadmap has Office for iOS, Android only coming in fall 2014
Promised iOS and Android versions of Office won't launch until the fall of 2014, according to a leaked roadmap obtained by CNet. The document describes a project called "Gemini," said to be Microsoft's plan to incorporate the Metro user interface into Office. The first "wave" in Gemini is expected to be an October 2013 update of the core apps -- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote -- that will run on mobile versions of Windows 8 and Windows RT. The software will allegedly supplement the desktop Windows suite, instead of replacing it.

ComiXology CEO denies Apple ban of comic, calls issue self-censored
Following the author reporting that Apple had banned an issue of an adult-oriented comic, the Cupertino manufacturer came under some fire for inconsistent application of its own standards. Seemingly available only on Apple's website and in its sotres, Incase is now offering 6" Sync and Charge Lightning to USB Cable ($25). It's the shortest Lightning cable we've yet seen, measuring half a foot from the end of one plug to the other. Instead of Apple's traditional white or an equally plain plack, it comes in a blue. The casing around the Lightning plug is, not surprisingly, larger than on first-party cables, but still relatively narrow.

Chrome Beta for Android just hit version 27 today, delivering with it a few nice enhancements to what is already arguably the best mobile browser on the market. Comixology claims responsibility for banning Saga #12, rescinds ban
Yesterday, we posted about Apple reportedly banning a comic book called Saga #12, due to a couple of graphic sex scenes included in it. The book's creator, Brian K. Vaughn, had posted that Apple wasn't allowing his book to be sold on the App Store, though it was available through a number of other channels. Alleged Office roadmap says Office for iOS possibly not until 2014
The rumor mill had previously stated that Office for iOS might be coming as soon as last month, but obviously that never happened. Now, an alleged roadmap for the Office family of products from Microsoft says we may not see Office for iOS this year at all.
ZDNet reports that it has obtained a roadmap from the company which does not list iOS or Android support for Office until fall of 2014. Samsung being cut out of A7 chip production, report says
Apple is giving A7 chip production over to TSMC, instead of long-time A-series chip manufacturer Samsung, an executive with one of Samsung's Korean partners has indicated to The Korea Times. "Apple is sharing confidential data for its next A7 system-on-chip (SoC) with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC)," the person is quoted as saying. Apple has refused to carry a comic, Saga #12, on app-based platforms due to gay sex scenes, according to a report. The comic’s writer, Brian K. SimCity for Mac coming on June 11
EA announced today that the latest version of SimCity will be arriving on the Mac platform on June 11, 2013. Lucy Bradshaw, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EA's Maxis Label, said that "We didn't want to make any compromises when it came to the Mac so we created a native version that is optimised for the hardware and OSX."
For those who have already purchased the PC version of the game, the Mac version will be available as a free download on EA's Origin platform. Origin will make it possible for players to play both the Mac and PC versions with the same account, continuing their game progress across platforms.

ZDNet has shared a roadmap it received from a source who claims it is the timetable for Microsoft's plans for both the Mac and iOS versions of Office. Apple has paid about $10 million to license patents from ACCESS, including patents related to Palm, Bell Communications Research and Geoworks. Japan’s ACCESS owns the company formerly known as PalmSource. The move was likely done to aid Apple in patent litigation moving forward. 'Spaceship Campus' architecture firm to revamp Apple retail stores

As noted by Macotakara, Japanese firm ACCESS today announced [Google translation] that Apple has agreed to license a set of patents related to Palm's smartphone technology. Piper Jaffray: Half of US teens own an iPhone, iPad very popular
Piper Jaffray has published a "Taking Stock with Teens" report [PDF] that examines US teenager's buying habits. The study looked at two groups of teenagers around 16 years of age: 1,600 from upper-income families and 3,600 from average-income families. The study found that nearly half (48%) of American teenagers own an iPhone -- an 8% rise since the previous survey. Further, 62% of teens plan on making the iPhone their next smartphone purchase.

Hon Hai/Foxconn sees 19 percent drop due to lower iPhone demand

Believe it or not, the European Union's public data hasn't been very public: despite a 2003 directive, there wasn't a clear right to reuse weather or other vital data, whether it's for an app or a service. Apple pays $10M to license patents tracing back to Palm, others
Apple has agreed to pay 1 billion yen, roughly $10 million US, to license patents originally devised by Palm and Palm OS creator PalmSource, among other companies, according to Macotakara. Googles «Play»-Store hat mehr Downloads, aber iOS macht 3 von 4 App-Dollars
Eine neue Studie von Canalys legt das Augenmerk auf die Entwicklung der vier führenden App Stores für mobile Geräte. Dabei handelt es sich um den «iOS App Store», «Google Play», die «BlackBerry World» und den «Windows Phone Store». Die Daten, die dabei herauskamen, sind durchaus beachtenswert.
Im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr wuchs das Download-Volumen im ersten Quartal 2013 laut der Studie um 11 Prozent. Insgesamt sollen in den vier untersuchten App Stores 13.4 Milliarden Apps heruntergeladen worden sein. Davon entfielen gemäss den Schätzungen von Canalys 51 Prozent auf «Google Play», während der «iOS App Store» auf dem zweiten Platz folgt. Konkrete Zahlen zu Apples Absatz nannte Canalys allerdings nicht.

Neue MacBooks zur WWDC im Juni 2013?
Laut einem Bericht von DigiTimes soll Apple im Juni neue MacBooks vorstellen. Die Aktualisierung der MacBook-Modelle soll pünktlich zur hauseigenen Entwicklerkonferenz «WWDC» präsentiert werden. Die WWDC dürfte dieses Jahr wieder im Juni in San Francisco stattfinden — bis dato hat Apple aber noch keine entsprechende Pläne kommuniziert. Gleichzeitig mit der Einführung der neuen MacBook-Air- und MacBook-Pro-Modelle sollen die «nicht-retina» Pro-Modelle aus dem Angebot genommen werden.
Auch wenn DigiTimes des öfteren falsch liegt mit deren Vorhersagen, könnten sich diese Gerüchte bewahrheiten. Intels neue Prozessoren-Generation «Haswell» wird für den Verlauf dieses Sommers erwartet. Sobald Intels neue Prozessoren auf den Markt kommen, dürfte es nicht mehr lange gehen bis Apple ein kleineres oder grösses Update bei den MacBook Pros und MacBook Airs durchführt.

Vor rund zwei Wochen veröffentlichte Apple ein MacBook-Firmware-Update, das ein seltenes Batterieproblem bei 11- und 13-Zoll-MacBooks behebt. Jetzt können sich auch Benutzer von 15- und 17-Zoll-MacBook-Pro-Modellen der Jahre 2010 und 2011 ein entsprechendes Update herunterladen.
Das Batterieproblem scheint somit alle MacBooks der Jahre 2010 und 2011 zu betreffen. Den meisten Benutzern dieser Geräte dürfte es jedoch noch gar nicht aufgefallen sein, da es erst dann Symptome zeigt, wenn das Gerät 1000 Ladezyklen überschritten hat. Sobald dieser Wert erreicht ist, kann es passieren, dass die Rechner sich abschalten oder nicht mehr funktionieren.

Gerüchten zufolge soll Apple für das dritte Quartal diesen Jahres die Einführung eines neuen Modells des MacBook Air planen. Die neuen Rechner sollen nicht nur Intels Haswell-Chips, sondern auch ein “Facelift” bekommen – und vielleicht auch ein Retina Display.

Neue iMacs: Lieferzeiten normalisieren sich
Die jüngsten Modelle des iMac sind dünn, hübsch – und schwer zu bekommen. Seit dem Verkaufsstart in November und Dezember letzten Jahres waren die Lieferzeiten sehr lang. Mittlerweile reduzieren sie sich aber auf ein normales Niveau.
Vor allem Besteller des 27-Zoll-iMac mussten sich recht lange gedulden: Noch im Januar lagen die Lieferzeiten bei drei bis vier Wochen. Doch auch auf das 21,5-Zoll-Modell mussten Kunden zwischenzeitlich zwei bis drei Wochen warten.

iMac-Verfügbarkeit lässt US-Mac-Verkaufszahlen im Januar und Februar steigen
Nachdem die Mac-Verkaufszahlen in Apples erstem Geschäftsquartal 2013 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr sogar rückläufig waren, soll das Unternehmen in den Monaten Januar und Februar zumindest in den USA wieder ein Plus erzielt haben. Verhandlungen für tiefere Integration von Yahoo in Siri?
Laut dem Wall Street Journal sollen Apple und Yahoo angeblich über eine engere Partnerschaft der beiden Unternehmen diskutieren. Der Bericht enthält keine spezifischen Angaben, welche Formen diese verstärkte Partnerschaft annehmen könnte. Apple und Yahoo verhandeln über tiefere Integration in Siri
Laut dem Wall Street Journal sollen Apple und Yahoo angeblich über eine engere Partnerschaft der beiden Unternehmen diskutieren. Der Bericht enthält keine spezifischen Angaben, welche Formen diese verstärkte Partnerschaft annehmen könnte. Bei den Gesprächen soll aber eine vertiefte Integration der Yahoo-Daten bei Apples digitalem Assistenten «Siri» zur Diskussion stehen. Bereits heute nutzt Apple die Daten von Yahoo zur Darstellung der Sportergebnisse, der Börsendaten oder des Wetterberichts (letztere beiden auch in den entsprechenden Apps). Angeblich könnten künftig Nachrichten, welche von Yahoo verbreitet werden, Bestandteil von Siri werden. Zudem könnte Yahoo mehr Sportdaten für Siri zur Verfügung stellen.

Study: half of US teens own iPhone, iOS share rising
A new poll by stock analysts Piper Jaffray shows very little change since last fall in the status of the iPhone as the coolest electronic device among teens. Nearly half of all of the 5,200 teenagers polled said they already owned an iPhone, a rise of eight percent from the previous survey. Some 62 percent said that they plan on buying an iPhone as their next device (about the same number as said that last time). Only 23 percent of teens indicated they were planning to buy an Android phone, but this did represent a one percent gain from the fall.

As T-Mobile prepares to officially offer the iPhone for the first time, it's trying to pump up the lure with a trade-in offer for owners of the 4 and 4S models. Available through mid-June, the promotion lets iPhone 4 and 4S owners trade in their current device for an AWS HSPA+ friendly iPhone 5 for no money upfront (with monthly payments) under its new no-contract Simple Choice Plans. Additionally, depending on the condition of the hardware being traded in, customers can get a credit of up to $120 to be used against those payments (knocking it down to $15 from $20, for example)

Apple and Yahoo are discussing ways to bring more of Yahoo's best features to Apple's iOS platform, the Wall Street Journal reports. Report: Apple bans graphic novel over explicit sex depiction?
The popular author of a "mature" comic book known as SAGA says that Apple has banned the most recent issue from its apps -- though not necessarily from its own iBookstore -- over two small images of explicit gay sex. Despite what Brian K. Vaughan says have been previous and "more graphic" imagery in previous issues, he and collaborator Fiona Staples claim that the issue is specific to the fact that in the two panels of the comic, a wounded character with a TV set for a head displays explicit male sex.

Apple bans Brian K. Vaughn's Saga #12 comic book due to graphic sex scenes
I never thought I'd write two stories in one day about Apple attacking the comic book industry over adult content, but that's indeed what's happening today. The latest controversy comes from writer Brian K. Vaughn, who writes a terrific series called Saga. The just-released issue number 12 of the book contains "two postage stamp-sized images of gay sex," according to Vaughn in a press release, and as a result, Apple has officially banned it from the App Store, commanding various comic publishers to not carry the book digitally for sale on the iPhone or iPad.

Video streamer Vudu reports physical break-in, customer data stolen
According to Vudu, unknown perpetrators broke into the video streamer's office on March 24 and stole a number of items, including hard drives including customer information with names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, account activity, dates of birth, and the last four digits of some credit card numbers. Digital comic publisher threatened by Apple over adult content
Digital comics publisher Izneo has pulled much of its content from its App Store app, after being cautioned by Apple about selling adult content on the iPad. Izneo has been on the App Store since 2010, but Apple only recently reached out to the company, saying that it had just 30 hours to remove all "adult" comics. Apple didn't identify the offending titles, so Izneo first pulled over half of its content, and then restored some of the (apparently) less explicit content later. Facetime, iMessage communications hampered for some users
Apple is reporting that "some users" are affected by an outage affecting both iMessage and FaceTime communications.
