Online Steve Jobs memorial pays tribute to the original Mac OS
Rememberum is a new start up company that provides clean, customizable options for creating online memorials for loved one. To promote their new service the company has published a stunningly creative tribute to Apple founder Steve Jobs, designed to look like the original Mac OS.

Disney's Mittens, Dream Chaser and more now available
Today saw a number of big releases on the App Store worth trying out. Here's a quick roundup of some of the biggest new app releases.
Disney has released a game called Mittens, which looks impressive. It was put together by a company called Metrogames, so it's not a fully internal product. Fortune: iPad sales hinting at new model soon?
Two recent sales on full-size and smaller iPad models by major US retailers may be laying the groundwork for a new model to emerge soon, Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt believes. Google has released a new beta of its Chrome browser for the desktop and mobile. Big box, online retailers slash iPad prices
Are you about to purchase an iPad? There's good news if you are -- Apple 2.0 is reporting that three large retailers have lowered prices on the iPad and iPad mini. Best Buy, Wal-Mart and MacMall are all showing price cuts on the third-generation iPad and the iPad mini, possibly signaling that the retailers are beginning to clear inventory for new models of Apple's popular tablet.

Apple Continues to Gain Smartphone Market Share in U.S.
comScore today released the results of its monthly rolling survey of U.S. mobile phone users for the December-February period, revealing that Apple's smartphone market share rose 3.9 points from November to February going from 35% of total U.S. smartphone platform and hardware sales to 38.9%. Phlo for Mac is a quick and useful search utility
If you are like me, you do a lot of searching every day. Not just Google, but IMDb for movie info, Amazon, TED talks and even TUAW. To help out people like you and me, Cynapse Software has introduced a nifty utility called Phlo. It provides a pop-up search field that be assigned to a global hotkey and always ready to go.
If you're looking to go beyond Google, there are dozens of combinations, and you can have multiple search engines selected. There's an extensive list of search portals buillt in, but you can add your own by simply providing a URL.

Facebook Home wird, wenn verfügbar (zuerst ab dem 12. April), einfach in den bestehenden Facebook-Apps angezeigt und lässt sich dann über den Playstore mit einem Click ziehen. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg today introduced a new home screen experience for Android devices. The company is trying to flip the user experience on phones so users will navigate their phone "through people, not apps". Apple pulls 'at least one' app from China App Store for banned books
Apple has pulled "at least one" app from the Chinese App Store for containing books banned by the Chinese government, the Financial Times reports. Although the name of the app hasn't been identified, it is said to have provided access to 10 books, include three by political activist Wang Lixiong, whose works are mostly illegal in the country. The banned books in the app discuss Tibet, the future collapse of the Chinese government, and a visit by Wang to Xinjiang, followed by his detention by state security.

Apple's planned 'spaceship' campus reportedly $2 billion over budget
In June of 2011, Steve Jobs stood before the Cupertino City Council and announced Apple's desire to build a massive new campus on 98 acres of land it had previously acquired from Hewlett Packard.

France Telecom: time is right for a low-cost iPhone model
As part of an interview with Bloomberg, France Telecom CEO Stephane Richard says that sales of "premium" smartphones such as the iPhone and Galaxy S models may start to suffer as the economy of Europe continues to stagnate. DEA upset by inability to intercept Apple iMessage content
The US Drug Enforcement Administration is complaining that it can't intercept content on Apple's iMessage service, even with a warrant, according to an internal note obtained by CNet. "On February 21, 2013, the DEA San Jose Resident Office (SJRO) learned that text messages sent via iMessages between Apple products (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and iMac) are not captured by pen register, trap and trace devices, or Title III interceptions," the DEA writes. The encryption used by Apple's iMessage service is hindering federal drug enforcement agency investigations, says a report in CNET. CNET obtained an internal Drug Enforcement Administration document that details the problem faced by agents who are tracking suspects using non-traditional communication methods.

Budget for Apple 'spaceship' campus rockets to $5 billion
The budget for Apple's upcoming "spaceship" campus in Cupertino has ballooned by $2 billion to a massive $5 billion, say five Bloomberg sources described as close to the project. Architectural firm Foster + Partners is reportedly looking to slash $1 billion from that budget, but that could still make the new campus more expensive than the new World Trade Center in New York City, which is expected to cost $3.9 billion. The attempt at cost-cutting is said to be behind the delay of the campus' opening until mid-2016.

U.S. Federal Law Enforcement Says It's Impossible to Wiretap iMessage Conversations
CNET has obtained a 'sensitive' U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency document that says it is impossible for law enforcement agencies to eavesdrop on iMessage conversations, even with a court order, because of Apple's "secure end-to-end encryption". The memo appears to be aimed at informing DEA agents that while they may have the appropriate subpoena to get SMS messages, they may not be getting all messages sent and received if the target is using iMessage. Online music royalties in UK exceeds radio for first time

Apple yesterday rolled out another tweak for its iOS App Store, adding age rating icons to the top section of each app's information page. While the ratings have long been included in app details at the bottom of the pages, the new icons are much more prominent to help parents quickly assess whether a given app might be age appropriate for their children. The change comes roughly two weeks after Apple added new "Offers In-App Purchases" labels to relevant App Store listings in another effort to make parents and other customers more aware of potential costs involved with apps.

Twitter iOS app updated to allow installation, launching of apps from tweets
Twitter updated its iOS app to version 5.5 and added support for its Twitter Cards feature. Twitter cards let developers and content creators attach media and links to Tweets. In the iOS app, it'll let users tap a link in a tweet and view content directly in an app that is installed on their iOS device. Blink statt WebKit: Google baut sich neue Browser-Engine
Google wird fortan für seine Produkte nicht mehr auf Apples WebKit-Engine «WebCore» setzen, sondern hat sich aus WebKit eine eigene Rendering Engine gebaut: «Blink». Der WebKit-Fork «Blink» soll künftig als Basis für den Chrome-Browser und das Chrome OS dienen. Einfach sei der Entscheid jedoch nicht gewesen, wie Google im hauseigenen Chromium-Blog schreibt. Der Suchmaschinengigant lobt die Perfomance, die Flexibilität und das durchdachte Design der Rendering Engine.
Google erklärt den Schritt zu einem eigenen WebKit-Fork damit, dass seine Chromium-Produkte bereits heute nur ein Bruchteil von WebKit (die WebCore-Engine) benutze und bei anderen Bestandteilen auf andere Lösungen setzt — so benutzt Google zum Beispiel eine andere Multi-Prozess-Architektur. Das Mobiltelefon feiert heute seinen 40. Geburtstag. Am 3. April 1973 wurde zum ersten Mal ein kommerzielles Telefonat von einem Mobiltelefon geführt. Noddler: Social-App zum Arschtreten oder Anstupsen deluxe
Seit zwei Wochen wache ich manchmal mit einer Torte im Gesicht auf. Oder kriege ein High-Five zum Frühstück. Oder kann mit weit entfernten Freunden zum Feierabend anstoßen. Anstupsen war gestern, heute ist Noddler.

Nach diversen Beschwerden und Reklamationen von Eltern, deren unbeaufsichtigte Kinder über In-App-Käufe horrende Summen ausgegeben haben, stellt Apple die Altersfreigabe für Apps prominenter dar. Das Wachstum der elektronischen Medien hat gemäss dem Tech-Experten dazu geführt, dass sich die Gesellschaft von der Schreib- und Lesekultur abwendet und sich in eine «mündliche Gesellschaft zurückentwickelt». Possibly in response to a growing number of stories of inept or naive parents who have inadvertently allowed their children to run up huge bills through in-app purchases (IAPs), Apple's App Store now puts the age recommendation of a given app directly below the title and author credit. The move effectively relocates the age recommendation to the first thing a buyer will likely see after the title. T-Mobile reports 'first positive branded (customer) growth in four years'
Right on the heels of its announcement of becoming the "UnCarrier", T-Mobile has dropped an early update on customer count for Q1. Close to half of Instagram's 100 million+ users are on Android
Originally launched in October 2010 as an iPhone exclusive, Instagram quickly became a runaway success. The photo sharing app was a personal favorite of Apple's Phil Schiller and was chosen as Apple's 2011 iPhone app of the year. Rather quickly, the app amassed millions of users and was held up by Apple enthusiasts as an example of why the iOS ecosystem was superior to Android's.
Instagram's iOS exclusivity, however, wasn't destined to last. After 17 months as an iOS-only application, the Instagram team finally released Instagram for Android on April 3, 2012.

Ultima is, of course, one of the oldest and best-loved RPG series in video games, with over a dozen different variations and versions. And EA has decided to bring the Ultima series to iOS with Ultima Forever, which is sort of a remake or reimagining of Ultima IV, one of the most popular versions of Ultima.

Majic Jungle's The Blockheads charges on
Developer David Frampton is one of our favorites around here at TUAW -- he made a big splash on the App Store a while ago with Chopper 2, but these days he's working on a huge sandbox app he's made called The Blockheads, which is a Minecraft-style game where you can explore a world with the titular characters, making and building items and contraptions from the items that you can find and collect.
The Blockheads is doing very well for Frampton -- he says the game has seen over four million downloads so far, and it's definitely the biggest project he's ever worked on. The game's gotten even bigger after a recent update that allowed "backgrounding,"

Security Researcher Brian Krebs outs the man behind the Flashback malware
In April 2012, security researchers discovered a new piece of malware targeting OS X users. The malware was dubbed 'Flashback' and reportedly infected more than 600,000 Mac users, including about 200 machines on Apple's Cupertino campus. The malware was able to infect so many machines because it was cleverly masqueraded as a fake Adobe Flash installer.
Once active, the malware would inject ads from pay per click providers into search results instead of sourcing the ads from Google. The security firm Symantec estimated that the malware had the potential to net its creators upwards of $10,000 a day, but further analysis

Google Forking WebKit To Create New Web Rendering Engine for Chrome
Google announced today that the company is forking the WebKit rendering engine to create its own web rendering engine called 'Blink'. Google had been the using Apple-initiated WebKit project to power its Chrome web browser. Future versions, however, will now be based on this new system. Google is now free to make changes to its rendering engine with less complexity and bureaucracy than when it was saving its changes to Webkit. Injustice: Gods Among Us gets an original iOS version
Injustice: Gods Among Us is a game that's been coming to consoles for a while now -- it's a fighting game, made by the same team behind Mortal Kombat, that features DC Universe superheroes battling it out against each other. Rdio introduces social video streaming service Vdio
Online music streaming service Rdio has announced the launch of Vdio, a new video-streaming service. Vdio is a pay-per-view service, unlike its sister program's "all you can eat" subscription model. The service builds off Rdio's social focus with Sets, playlists for TV shows and movies that make it easy to share and discover new content to watch. Furthering the social theme of the service is the ability to check out what your friends are watching at a given moment and jump into the program with them.

Game developer LucasArts shuttered by Disney, 150 looking for work
Following its acquisition of Lucasfilm, Disney has shuttered the venerable video game producing arm of the company, LucasArts. Formerly known as LucasFilm Games, the dissolution of the company is leaving approximately 150 people looking for work. Rather than develop titles, the company is moving to a licensing model with no internal development taking place, and existing titles being cancelled.

Daily iPhone App: bit Dungeon is a retro RPG done well
bit Dungeon arrived on the App Store a little while ago, and if you missed it then, you'd do well to try it out now. Quite a few games have used the old 8-bit top-down RPGs as a rubric, but bit Dungeon is probably the best example I've seen of all of them. You simply go from room to room, Legend of Zelda-style, hacking away at enemies, getting better gear, and surviving as long as you can.
The controls are interesting -- rather than using virtual controls, you simply tap on the screen to move around, and then again to attack. This ends up working kind of like Diablo, actually, where you tap to move out of the way of certain incoming spells or monsters, and then tap back in for your own offense when the way is clear.
