Pocket updates its iOS and Mac app with new "Send to Friend" sharing feature
Pocket changed its name from Read it Later one year ago today, and the company is celebrating it's first anniversary with an update that brings a new sharing feature to the app.
Pocket's latest version has a completely redesigned Share menu that includes a "Send to Friend" feature. This option lets you share content directly within the app using just a few taps. You can add a comment or include a highlighted quote from the article in a message that will be sent out to your friends or family. Apple today issued build 12E33a of OS X Mountain Lion to developers, eight days after build 12E30 was released. Build 12E33a marks the third beta iteration of OS X 10.8.4. Arris closes deal to buy Motorola Home cable and internet biz from Google
About a year and a half after Google announced its acquisition of Motorola, it's closed a deal to sell the Motorola Home half to Arris. Motorola Home covers the company's cable TV and internet device, which combined with Arris' existing businesses creates what it's calling "the Premier Video Delivery and Broadband Technology Company." Meanwhile, Google keeps the Motorola Mobility half that covers its cellphones, tablets and of course, the related patents. The move cost Arris $2.2 billion in cash along with 10.6 million shares of its stock issued to Google. That's on top of 10.6 million shares for

WhatsApp: Mehr Nutzer als Twitter, keine In-App-Werbung geplant
In einem Interview hat der WhatsApp-CEO Jan Koum interessante Zahlen zum Instant-Messaging-Dienst preisgegeben – unter anderem zählt WhatsApp mittlerweile mehr aktive Nutzer als Twitter. Google updates mobile search with quick views, expandable links
Google has made two significant changes to the way mobile web search results are presented, an official blog post states. The first is the concept of an expandable sitelink; some results now show a series of drop-down menus below them, which when opened reveal links to specific pages or subsections. Google uses the example of Rotten Tomatoes, in which tapping on the "In Theaters" menu will display "Best Movies in Theaters" and "New Movies in Theaters" links.

TWC TV iOS app updated for TV streaming away from home
As we revealed a few days ago and Time Warner Cable announced yesterday, its iOS app has been updated with the ability to stream video even when away from subscriber's home networks. Google Fiber in Provo, UT hinging on city council vote
An update on the official Google Fiber website has revealed that the search engine is attempting to expand into Provo, UT. While the deal is not yet finalized, Google has proposed that it will "commit to upgrade the network to gigabit technology and finish network construction so that every home along the existing iProvo network would have the opportunity to connect to Google Fiber."

BBC Worldwide to offer first-run TV to Australia through Foxtel in mid-2014
Australians have long had access to the BBC, although a current four-channel lineup on Foxtel won't completely satisfy fans of British TV when it's just a sliver of the content they know. Briefly: Microsoft two-step security, Novatel MiFi 2 updates
Microsoft has enabled two-factor authentication for Microsoft Accounts. Leaked earlier this month, users will see the option to add the extra security measure through the account management menu over the next few days, and can download an authenticator app from the Windows Phone store or use third-party apps on other platforms, according to a company blog post. Apps and devices that will not work with the new security measure directly can have application-specific passwords created in order to function.

iPad mini suppliers anticipate 20-30 percent shipment drop in Q2
iPad mini shipments are expected to decline about 20 to 30 percent in the current quarter, say supply chain sources for DigiTimes. Apple is already believed to be cutting its Mini reserves, from roughly 15 million in the previous quarter to between 10 and 12 million. The shipment forecast is being blamed on people waiting for the release of a second-generation Mini, even though the first-gen tablet shipped in November.

Report: Amazon acquires Siri competitor Evi for $26M
Amazon has reportedly acquired voice-assistant app developer Evi Technologies, unnamed sources have told TechCrunch. The deal, which is said to be worth $26 million, is said to be focused on Evi's mobile apps for Android and iOS, which provide functionality similar to that of Apple's own Siri technology, though both parties have yet to make an official announcement.

Piikki is the best receipts scanner I've used
I've become religious about tracking paper receipts over the last year (and can't wait until all receipts are digital). That means I've tried most of the big-name iOS receipt scanner apps. Out of all of them, an app called Piikki (US$2.99, universal) is my favorite.
On the surface, Piikki is similar to other receipt scanner apps. It photographs receipts and saves the image to your phone. But the beauty of Piikki is its tagging and archival power. Every time you photograph a receipt, it's date, time, and geolocation is saved. Users can then enter a title for each receipt, select a category the receipt falls in to, select the appropriate currency and add tags.

Provo, Utah is the third city to get Google Fiber
It was recently announced that Google Fiber is coming to Austin, and today Mountain View revealed a third city that will enjoy its high-speed internet: Provo, Utah. iTunes maintains its music download dominance as Amazon plays catch-up
Nearly 10-years after the iTunes Music Store first opened up for business, iTunes remains the market leader in digital music downloads.
According to a research report published by the NPD Group earlier this week, iTunes accounted for approximately 63% of all digital music downloads in 2012. Trailing behind is AmazonMP3 with a somewhat respectable 22% share. While Amazon has a ways to go before even getting close to Apple, the world's largest online retailer has been making significant gains in that regard. In 2011, Amazon's share of the digital music download market checked in at 15%, representing a solid 50% increase year over year.

Apple sells 5% of PCs world-wide, makes 45% of the profit
Talk to people who are PC fans and they'll point out that while Apple controls the smartphone market in many respects, the company still only has a small fraction of the global PC market. But as Horace Dediu at Asymco points out, any other PC maker in the world (like Dell, HP or ASUS) would kill to have Apple's share of the PC market if it meant also getting Apple's share of the profits. You see, while Apple only owns 5 percent of the world-wide PC market, they make 45 percent of the profit.

Evernote looks to create 'new and magical' devices in future

TechCrunch is reporting that Amazon has acquired Evi, a natural language search platform that is similar to Apple's Siri, for $26 million. The Evi app was originally posted on the App Store but Apple had threatened to remove because of similarities to Siri, but later said it would "work with" the company to reduce similarities. Evi remains available on the App Store. TechCrunch understands from sources that the company has been sold to Amazon for $26 million. However, calls to Amazon PR, backers Octopus Ventures and the founders of Evi have ben met with a stoney silence. A spokesperson for Octopus told us: “On this occasion Octopus will decline to comment on this specific portfolio company”.

Google Play catching up with iOS App Store in volume, trails in revenue
The App Annie Index market report for the first quarter of 2013 is out, showing some fascinating trends. While the Android-centric Google Play app store is seeing continued growth in download volume, the iOS App Store dominates revenues, earning almost 2.6 times the app revenue of Google Play.
Almost half of the total iOS downloads were from four countries -- the US, China, United Kingdom, and Japan. Not surprisingly, those four countries were also responsible for the most revenue from the iOS App Store, followed by Australia.

Rolecule's Rolomotion is designed to convert an iPhone or an iPod touch into a motion controller, similar to a Nintendo Wii Remote. The iPhone motion controller combines with games streamed over AirPlay using the Apple TV, allowing for motion-based gaming directly on a television. The Power Matters Alliance (PMA) just scored another major boost. AT&T has announced that it will integrate wireless charging within select smartphones by 2014. Those TBA handsets may be manufactured by BlackBerry, ZTE, or any of the organization's latest members: HTC, Huawei, LG and Samsung. Google Play encroaches on App Store download volumes
The Apple App Store and Google Play are now nearly equal in terms of download volume, according to new data by analytics firm App Annie. "While the iOS App Store and Google Play both had solid gains in app downloads last quarter, Google Play had a higher percentage growth rate as well as a greater gain in absolute downloads," the firm writes. Next month Apple will open its first store in Berlin, and in a sign that the completion of the store is progressing as scheduled today the exterior construction scaffolding has started to come down. App Annie today released its latest data on mobile app downloads, finding that continued momentum for Android has allowed the Google Play marketplace to nearly match Apple's App Store in download volume. Die Marktforscher der «NPD Group» haben in einer neuen Studie die Marktanteile der verschiedenen Screen-Sharing-Technologien analysiert. Untersucht wurde dafür im ersten Quartal 2013 das Verhalten von 2’600 Tablet- und Smartphone-Nutzer.
Gemäss den Ergebnissen wissen lediglich etwas mehr als 20 Prozent der iPhone- und iPad-Nutzer Bescheid über Apples Screen-Sharing-Technologie «AirPlay» und die Verwendungsmöglichkeiten dieser Technologie. In Anbetracht der vielfältigen Nutzungsmöglichkeiten handelt es sich somit um eine sehr kleine Gruppe, welche sich mit AirPlay auskennt.

As well as this morning's redesigned sports watches, TomTom has just launched a refreshed version of its GO GPS unit for drivers who still prefer a dedicated sat nav. After delaying the release of iSteve due to the tragic bombing at the Boston Marathon this week, the Steve Jobs parody film went live on Funny or Die's website late on Tuesday.

Facebook hires former Apple executive and iOS 6 Maps lead Richard Williamson
Bloomberg reported late on Tuesday that Facebook recently hired former Apple executive Richard Williamson as a manager in its mobile software group.
A 10 year Apple veteran, Williamson previously served as Apple's Director of iOS Software, a fact which serves to explain the hiring given Facebook's aggressive new push in the mobile space.
While at Apple, Williams oversaw the development of Apple's homegrown Maps app, which, if you recall, debuted to much controversy with the release of iOS 6. Williamson was ultimately shown the door this past November when Eddy Cue decided to shake up Apple's Maps team.

Adobe will Googles WebKit-Fork «Blink» unterstützen
Vincent Hardy, Adobes Leiter des «Web Platform Team», hat in einem Blog-Eintrag Google Unterstützung bei der Entwicklung des Webkit-Forks «Blink» zugesichert.
Der Adobe-Manager geht durch Googles Initiative von einer weiteren Belebung auf dem Browser-Markt aus. Die offenen Webstandards werden durch Googles Engagement nicht bedroht, ist der Manager überzeugt. Aus seiner Sicht braucht es den Wettbewerb zwischen verschiedenen Implementationslösungen, wie beispielsweise Mozillas Gecko, Microsofts Trident oder Apples WebKit. Vincent Hardy geht davon aus, dass sich der Blink-Code mit der Zeit etwas von WebKit entfernen wird. Solange die verschiedenen Technologien die gleichen Features auf unterschiedliche Weise implementieren, wird dies aus seiner Sicht für das Web kein Problem darstellen.

Two separate analyses by different companies paint a clearer picture of Apple's role both among the traditional desktop/notebook and mobile device industries: while statistics on shipments versus sales or Internet use often paint a conflicting picture, in one area the verdict is in: Apple, unlike any other manufacturer, is raking in the lion's share of profits from tablets, smartphones and computers. Apple-Aktien Betrug: 25 Jahre Haft für Trader möglich
Ein ehemaliger Trader muss sich in wenigen Tagen vor Gericht verantworten, weil er sich durch den Kauf von Apple Aktien in ungerechtfertigter Weise bereichern wollte. iSteve — Satire-Film über Steve Jobs nun online
Der «erste Film über Steve Jobs» hätte eigentlich bereits vorgestern veröffentlicht werden sollen. Aufgrund des Bomben-Anschlags in Boston wurde die Veröffentlichung des Satire-Filmes über Steve Jobs auf heute Mittwoch verschoben. Nun lässt sich der 80-minütige Streifen auf der Webseite von Funny-or-Die anschauen.
Der Film mit dem Namen «iSteve»blickt satirisch auf das Leben von Apple-Gründer und -Visionär Steve Jobs zurück. Steve Jobs wird von Justin Long verkörpert. Long ist aus Filmen wie «Die Hard 4.0» oder Apples «Get a Mac»-Werbespots (der Mac) bekannt. Neben Justin Long spielt mit Jorge Garcia eine weitere bekannte Person mit. Apple closes Boylston Street store in Boston in reaction to bombing
Apple has temporarily closed its Boylston Street location in reaction to the bombing that occurred during Monday's Boston Marathon. The store's page on Apple's web site has a short message that reads "Our thoughts are with our neighbors in the community and everyone affected by Monday's tragedy in Boston." There is no word yet on how long the story will remain closed, but it was located just a block away on the same street from where the second blast occurred in what police have described as a deliberate act of terrorism that killed three and injured 140 people.

I first learned about Artkive last week at an event here in LA, put on by Technori and designed to show off some of the best startup ideas in the City of Angels. The company has been around for quite a while, and has picked up a whole lot of buzz from mom bloggers and the parenting industry (which explains why I'm so late on it: I don't have kids and don't plan to any time soon). Time Warner Cable bringing on-the-go live TV and on-demand video to iOS devices
Time Warner Cable has announced an upcoming update to their iOS app that will enable subscribers to watch live television and on-demand programming from their mobile device as long as they have a Wi-Fi connection. Verizon Wireless customers can stream content over 3G and 4G.
The app update is significant because it marks the first time Time Warner subscribers will be able to access content on mobile devices outside of their home-based Wi-Fi network.

Safari, Java, printer drivers updated for OS X 10.6 and later
Apple on Tuesday updated both Java and its web browser Safari for users of OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and higher. The updates now allow users to enable the Java web plug-in on a site-by-site basis, as opposed to the "active" or "inactive" options it has had. Following a spate of serious issues, Apple forcibly disabled the Java plug-in because of malicious, in-use threats -- though users can reactivate Java once they've updated. Yahoo disappoints street, posts continued decreasing quarterly revenue
Yahoo today released quarterly financial results that approached, but fell short of Wall Street expectations. The company's net revenue reached $1.07 billion, the low end of what the company forecast in January, with analyst estimates at $1.1 billion. Yahoo said it earned $390 million, or 35 cents a share in the first three months of the year, compared to $286 million, or 23 cents in first quarter of 2012.

While Apple's success in established markets around the world is taken for granted, the company is having a harder time gaining a solid foothold in two large and growing smartphone markets -- China and Brazil. Time Warner Cable enables away-from-home streaming on select channels
Time Warner Cable is revising its TWC TV app, and is adding live programming out of the subscriber's home on Apple mobile devices. Chrome for Business adds legacy browser support, cloud management

Q: Since Google has announced it is killing off Reader, what do you recommend for those who don’t want to give up RSS? I’ve seen plenty of platform-specific RSS reader apps but it’s unclear if any of them will provide the background service to sync read/unread articles in the cloud for use with multiple devices/apps/operating systems. iTunes maintains digital music lead, but loses some ground
Apple remains in control of digital music sales in the US, but has lost some ground in the past few years, according to a new NPD Group report. The company currently holds a 63 percent marketshare with iTunes, down from 66 percent in 2010. Amazon has meanwhile established itself as a major player, now at 22 percent of the market versus 13 percent in 2010. The companies are however competing for a static number of music buyers, since the number of Americans that have bought at least one song has remained at roughly 44 million annually for the past three years.

Apple updates iPhoto, Aperture with bug fixes, tweaks
On Tuesday amidst a slew of small updates, Apple has posted new versions of its photo-management and editing software programs iPhoto (now at version 9.4.3) and Aperture (now at v3.4.4). Both are designed to address an handful of specific issues in each program, along wit the usual stability and performance improvements. Both also require OS X 10.7.5 (for Lion users) or 10.8.2 (for Mountain Lion users) as a minimum. Apart from that, the two updates address entirely different areas to resolve known issues.
