US Navy holt die erste Drohne mit der Laserkanone LaWS aus dem Himmel (Video)

Die US Navy hat dieses Video veröffentlicht, in dem die Laserkanone Laser Weapon System (LaWS) von Bord der USS Dewey aus eine Drohne abschiesst. Das ist zwar noch ein Testsystem, aber bereits zwei Jahre früher als geplant, nämlich schon 2014, soll das erste Schiff mit einem SSL-Laser ausgerüstet werden. Die Dinger kosten 32 Millionen Dollar pro Stück, sollen aber pro Schuss unter einem Dollar kosten, was deutlich billiger ist als die Munition herkömmlicher Geschütze. PlayStation Vita's firmware update 2.10 adding folders, enhanced video playback
Tired of all those messy icons cluttering up your PlayStation Vita's home screen? Panic teases a new iPad app, probably Panic Status Board
Panic is one of our favorite Mac developers -- they make the excellent Coda web editor, and Transmit, which is my OS X FTP client of choice. They have a new iPad app arriving this week, and word around the Internets is that it's an iPad version of Status Board, the internal tool the company developed for tracking projects, appointments, and Twitter messages. As you can see above, the Panic tool is meant to be used by multiple people and can track updates and todos for multiple projects and products, but presumably a more personal iPad tool would be applicable to more than just the Panic

Nearly Half of Surveyed U.S. Teens Using iPhones, Over One-Third Using iPads
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster today released the results of his semi-annual survey of U.S. teenagers, finding that iPhone and iPad usage remains strong among the 5,200 teens included in the study. According to the report, 48% of teens now report that they are using iPhones, up from 40% just six months ago.We believe this demonstrates that Apple remains the top choice for teens despite more competition from Samsung. Additionally, the survey demonstrated that 62% of teens expect their next phone to be an iPhone, which we believe shows that the iPhone has loyalty amongst teens. In terms of Android, 23% of teens expect their next phone to be an Android device, up from 22% in Fall 2013. We believe that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and eventually the S4 are taking share from other Android devices, but little from Apple in terms of the teen demographic.

Chrome for iOS now includes Google Cloud Print, AirPrint, and fullscreen browsing
Google's Chrome browser for iOS (free) was updated to version 26.0.1410.50 today, providing some new and much-appreciated features.
To begin with, the app now provides support for Google Cloud Print, a way of printing documents to printers from just about anywhere through PCs or Macs that are aware of attached or wireless printers. The app also provides support for Apple's own AirPrint and AirPrint-aware printers.

Vudu offices burglarized and customer info stolen
Usually when customer info is snatched up by a ne're-do-well, it's done digitally. Video streaming service Vudu, however, was the victim of an old fashioned burglary on March 24th of this year when someone broke into its offices and stole hard drives with customer data on them. According to an e-mail sent out to users today, those HDDs "contained customer information, including names, email addresses, postal addresses, phone numbers, account activity, dates of birth and the last four digits of some credit card numbers." Apple seeds second OS X 10.8.4 build to developers
Apple is now seeding a second beta of OS X 10.8.4 to developers, reports say. The build is labelled 12E30, and as before comes with no known issues. Developers are also once again being asked to focus on Wi-Fi, Safari, and graphics drivers.

Boingo opens limited Wi-Fi access to AT&T global subscribers
Software and service provider Boingo Wireless today revealed a deal with AT&T allowing global roaming data subscribers to use its network of Wi-Fi hotspots globally. By way of the AT&T Wi-Fi Internataional App, users can locate and sign into the network operated by Boingo's subsidiary, Concourse Communications Group. The AT&T Wi-Fi International app is available to AT&T customers who subscribe to either the 300MB or 800MB AT&T Data Global Add-On package. Pay-as-you-go or other data cap packages are ineligible for the offering.

iOS App Store accounts for nearly 75% of mobile app download revenue
A new research report from Canalys took a look at the four leading mobile app stores -- Apple's App Store, Google Play, BlackBerrry World and the Windows Phone Store -- and came away with some interesting data.
During the first quarter of 2013, Canalys found that the number of worldwide mobile downloads grew by 11% compared to the same quarter a year-ago. Cumulatively, the number of downloads across all app stores checked in at 13.4 billion.

Akamai demos Hyperconnected Living Room second-screen concept at NAB
Companion apps are nothing new, but while they can serve up bonus material for a TV show or medal counts for the Olympics, they can't see exactly what you're watching and display relevant information in realtime. Akamai's Hyperconnected Living Room concept demoed here at NAB aims to enhance the dual-screen experience by both pushing out on-demand movies and other streaming content and bringing related info to your slate, exactly when you'd expect to see it. Bungie's Pathways Into Darkness comes back to Mac for free
Back before Halo was the biggest title on Microsoft's Xbox, it was actually planned as a Mac title. That's because Bungie, the game's developer, was actually a Mac game company -- they made a number of really terrific shooters for the Mac, including Marathon (which has since been released on iOS along with its sequels). AT&T announces 1Gb Austin expansion on heels of Google Fiber deal
Following in the wake of Google's announcement of Fiber expansion in Austin, AT&T has announced similar plans, according to a press release. The company is planning to build out a gigabit fiber network in the city, but hasn't yet revealed what parts of the city will be served, or what the gigabit tier might cost. Likewise, it hasn't set a timeline for when the network will be completed.

Nifty tip for retaining the detachable plug on an Apple Power Supply
Have you ever lost a "duck head"? That's the term for the detachable plug that comes with Apple power supplies. You can remove the duck head and install a full extension cord, but it's quite irritating to lose the plug if you occasionally want to use just the power supply and its thin cable. Panasonic prices and ships its first media streamers, newest Blu-ray Disc players
Don't look now, but Panasonic has just gone public with pricing and availability information for its inaugural line of streaming media players. Announced a few months back at CES, the 3D-capable DMP-MS10 is shipping today for $79.99, offering up VIERA Connect (for easy integration with older Panny HDTVs), inbuilt WiFi, external HDD playback and access to Netflix, Hulu Plus, CinemaNow, Vudu and YouTube. Today "angelmb" had an automator workflow question, so they turned to the forums looking for some advice, a solution has yet to be found. Yesterday one Junior Member was looking for a reason why their Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse won't connect to their iMac until after they log in when they don't display this behavior while being used with other devices.

NASA gives planet-hunting TESS space telescope go-ahead for 2017 launch
NASA's Kepler space telescope hasn't exactly been a slouch when it comes to planet hunting, but that effort will soon be getting a considerable boost courtesy of a new mission selected by NASA as part of its Explorer program. Dubbed the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (or TESS), this new space telescope will one-up Kepler with the ability to perform an all-sky survey (an area 400 times larger than previous missions) to search for transiting exoplanets, with an eye towards planets comparable to Earth in size. Google and Apple Losing Mobile Advertising Market to Publishers
Research firm IDC today announced the release of a new report covering the mobile advertising market, noting that ad networks such as those from Google and Apple are losing traction to publishers able to use their size to drive their own advertising sales.Where in past years, ad networks such as Google, Millennial Media, and Apple received most of the spending on mobile display ads, now publishers control the segment, thanks to very strong sales growth in the past year. AppGratis CEO says app removal was sudden reversal
AppGratis' removal from the App Store was marked by a sudden reversal on the part of Apple reviewers, says AppGratis CEO Simon Dawlat. Vine tops the free app list in the US App Store
Twitter's Vine app has only been available since late January of 2013, but it's already become a favorite app for folks who love shooting, editing, and sharing six-second videos of just about everything. Yesterday, Vine reached the number one spot of the US App Store for free apps, causing Vine app creative director and co-founder Rus Yusupov (@rus) to engage in a little Twitter hyperbole (above).

Laser scans objects in 3D from half a mile away, scientists just need reason to use it
3D scanning at a range of 0.62 miles? It just became possible, thanks to a laser camera developed by physicists at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. California-based AOptix today announced an iPhone app and sleeve to perform biometric scanning for verifying the identity of people. The AOptix Stratus system turns an iPhone 4/4S into an iris, face, fingerprint, and voice scanner that can be easily used by anyone who has used an iPhone before.
The AOptix Stratus App for iOS costs US$199 and is available in the App Store today in a first public release. Apple working on 'at least two' iPhone screen sizes, analyst claims
The next-generation iPhone will launch with "at least two screen sizes" as options, says Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. Musubo's latest case for the iPhone 5, Diamond ($33), is a truly distinctive looking option. Coming in black, purple, red, or blue, it combines an opaque TPU frame with a matching translucent diamond-patterned plastic panel. The case includes button protection and well-tailored holes for the openings. It comes with a stand, although the website lists screen film and a cleaning cloth as well, which were missing from our review samples.

Rumor pushes fifth-gen iPad production to July-August timeframe
Mass production of the fifth-generation iPad is only slated to start in a July-August window, say DigiTimes sources in Taiwan-based supply companies. Apple hat am Wochenende eine neue Job-Anzeige veröffentlicht, mit welcher Apple einen Software-Entwickler für den Standort im «Melbourne Design Center» in Florida sucht. Bei diesem Job könnte es sich um eine Stelle beim aufgekauften Fingerabdruck-Spezialisten AuthenTec handeln. AuthenTec hatte bereits vor der Übernahme durch Apple einen Standort in Florida. Die Niederlassung befindet sich in der Nähe des «Kennedy Space Centers», dort haben sich einige High-Tech-Betriebe angesiedelt.
Apple erwartet vom gesuchten Mitarbeiter die Fähigkeit, einfach aufgebaute Codes zu schreiben, um Hardware konfigurieren und kontrollieren zu können. Was auf dem Foto hier so aussieht wie ein verrutschtes normales Headset ist ein Headset mit EEG-Sensor namens "Neurosky MindSet", mit dem Forscher an der UC Berkeley die Möglichkeit untersuchen, eine Authentifizierung mit Gehirnwellen zu erreichen. Das scheint schon gut zu funktionieren, denn selbst mit dem vergleichsweise simplen Neurosky MindSet, das für ca. 100 Dollar zu haben ist und nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt der Hirnaktivität abbildet konnten sie eine Fehlerquote von weniger als einem Prozent erreichen. Zum Kalibrieren mußten die Versuchspersonen verschiedene Aufgaben erfüllen, sich zum Beispiel auf den eigenen Atem konzentrieren, oder sich vorstellen, ihren Finger auf und ab zu bewegen. WhatsApp: Gerüchte um Verkauf an Google stimmen nicht
Neeraj Arora, Manager des Nachrichtendienstes WhatsApp, hat in der Nacht auf heute zu den Gerüchten rund um einen möglichen Kauf von WhatsApp durch Google Stellung bezogen. Gegenüber AllThingsDigital sagte der Manager, WhatsApp führe derzeit keine Verkaufsgespräche mit Google. Einen weitergehenden Kommentar zu diesem Thema lehnte der Manager ab. 13.4 billion downloads app downloads in Q1 2013, Apple tops profit
A new report by Canalys estimates that the top four app stores served up a total of 13.4 billion apps for the first quarter in 2013. Die bisher eher weniger für Gerüchte bekannte News-Seite MacDailyNews berichtet unter Berufung auf eine «verlässliche Quelle», Apple solle bereits in diesem Monat eine neue Generation des Mac Pro auf den Markt bringen. Möglicherweise könnte der Launch auch in den Mai oder Juni verschoben werden, so die anonyme Quelle. Allerdings hält die Quelle den April für das wahrscheinlichste Datum für die Marktlancierung. Intel zeigt neue Thunderbolt-Generation mit 20 Gbps
In Las Vegas findet derzeit die jährliche Ausstellung der «National Association of Broadcasters» (NAB) statt. Intel nutzte die Ausstellung gestern für die Präsentation der nächsten Generation der Thunderbolt-Technologie, welche Intel zusammen mit Apple entwickelt.
2014 soll die derzeit «Falcon Ridge» genannte dritte Thunderbolt-Generation marktreif sein. Während die aktuelle, zweite Thunderbolt-Generation «Cactus Ridge» auf eine Transferrate von 10 Gigabit pro Sekunde je Kanal kommt, soll Falcon Ridge diese Bandbreite auf 20 Gbps verdoppeln. Mit diesem Interface soll es möglich sein, gleichzeitig 4K-Auflösungen und Daten übertragen zu können. An der NAB demonstrierte Intel «Falcon Ridge» mit einer Transferrate von 1.2 GB pro Sekunde (siehe Video unten).
Falcon Ridge soll mit den aktuellen Steckern und Kabeln rückwärts-kompatibel sein.

Eyes-On mit Sonys 4K OLED-Displays (Video)

Sony hat auf der NAB gestern zwei Prototypen ihrer neuen 4K OLED-Monitore vorgestellt, einmal mit 56 Zoll und einmal mit 30 Zoll. Ron Johnson verlässt JC Penney — zurück zu Apple?
Ron Johnson muss seinen CEO-Posten beim Einzelhandelsunternehmen JC Penney verlassen. Johnson baute bei Apple die äusserst erfolgreiche Apple-Retail-Store-Kette auf und stand der Ladenkette von ihrem Start 2001 bis Ende 2011 vor, bevor er zu JC Penney ging. Bei JC Penney sollte Johnson die 111 Jahre alte Ladenkette ins 21. Jahrhundert katapultieren. Die Modernisierung ist derzeit in vollem Gange, gestaltete sich bisher aber nicht so erfolgreich wie erhofft. Die Neugestaltung der Ladenlokale kam bei der Hauptkundschaft nicht wie erhofft an und auch die jungen Einkäufer konnten mit den neuen Lokalen nicht genügend angelockt werden. JC Penney schrieb die letzten sechs Quartale rote Zahlen. Alleine 2012 sanken die Umsätze bei JC Penney gegenüber 2011 um 27 Prozent, was einem Minus von 13 Milliarden US-Dollar ausmacht.

Google has finally released an update for its AdMob advertising SDK for iOS developers that leaves those reliant on it just three weeks to update affected apps before Apple's hard deadline for rejecting apps that still use Unique Device Identification (UDIDs) to track app usage and advertising effectiveness. You may (or may not) remember Trism, which was one of the first iPhone games I've ever played, and was one of the App Store's first big gaming winners. Developer Steve Demeter was behind that game, but after his huge success on the early App Store, he left the spotlight for quite a while, and hasn't released another game since. RAID cards are one of the more difficult things in the technology world to get excited about. Home Box Office has updated its HBO Go app to version 2.1, adding background AirPlay streaming that lets users pass video onto TVs and other devices using AirPlay while making the mobile device free to run other applications. Daily iPhone App: Ms. Splosion Man splodes out onto iOS
I'm a big fan of developer Twisted Pixel -- their console games are always terrific, with the original Splosion Man being one of my favorites. Now, the company has teamed up with developer Iron Galaxy and publisher Microsoft to bring the sequel to that one, Ms. Splosion Man, to iOS, and the result is a really impressive port. In fact, I don't know if "port" is even the right word for this one. If you'd never heard Ms. Splosion Man was released on Xbox before it arrived on the iPhone, this could just be one of the best platformers on the App Store.

AppGratis pulled from App Store for promotional abuses
Apple has removed the app-discovery program AppGratis from the iOS App Store, saying in a statement that the company behind the app violated two developer rules, one of which was only recently added. Originally thought to have gotten in trouble for breaking a rule that said that apps that promote other apps "in a manner similar to or confusing with the App Store will be rejected," Apple later clarified that AppGratis was promoting apps whose developers had paid for them to do so, and were also abusing push notification rules.

HBO Go for iOS version 2.1 adds AirPlay multitasking

Ron Johnson fired as CEO of JCPenney; Ullman to return
Former Apple retail boss Ron Johnson is leaving department store chain JCPenney, fired after his plan to remake the venerable business in an effort to update to 21st century buying habits failed to win over customers. Johnson, who put the brakes on endless sales in favor of everyday low prices and remodelled stores to have "store within a store" concepts for major brands, will be succeeded by his predecessor, Mike Ullman. Johnson left Apple in late 2011 to revitalize the chain, but the 111-year-old company has posted losses for the last six quarters.

Sony announces Long GOP 4K codec for pros, XAVC-S for consumers
If you were chomping at the bit to create content for the oncoming 4K revolution, Sony has just announced a couple of enhancements to its XAVC video format to help you on your way. Long GOP is a high-efficiency codec designed to meet the requirements of the professional market, while XAVC-S is aimed squarely at consumers with its MP4 wrapping. HBO Updates iOS App with AirPlay Multitasking and Game of Thrones Interactive Features [iOS Blog]
HBO Go for iOS has been updated to version 2.1, most notably adding AirPlay multitasking support to allow video content from the HBO Go app to stream to the television while leaving the iPad or the iPhone free to operate other apps. Ron Johnson ousted as JC Penney CEO
One of the key aspects of Apple's resurgence under Steve Jobs was the rollout of Apple's insanely profitable retail stores. And the man spearheading Apple's efforts was Ron Johnson, a retail veteran who made a name for himself at Target.
In June 2011, Johnson announced he was leaving Apple to take on the CEO position at J.C. Penney. At the time, Johnson described it as a dream job.
