Facebook brings free VoIP calling to Android users in the US
Not content to own your phone's home screen, Facebook is bringing free VoIP calling to users of its Home and Android Messenger apps in the US. VoIP for iOS users has been available for a few months now; with Android already enjoying the service in 23 other countries, including Canada. The feature will roll out over the course of the day, and it appears to be an OTA update; Android users will know they have the new VoIP feature if they can click the "I" icon on a friend's profile and then select "free call." Amazon/Goodreads deal quashed Apple iBookstore plans, say sources
Amazon's buyout of Goodreads in late March also had the effect of derailing Apple plans for the iBookstore, say Wall Street Journal sources. During the past year, Apple and Goodreads reportedly discussed integrating Goodreads content into the iBookstore, namely in the form of displaying user reviews and ratings. The scheme would've echoed the way Rotten Tomatoes ratings are presented alongside movies on iTunes.

US Cellular announces its intent to carry Windows Phone 8 devices
In response to a customer's question about Windows Phone plans, US Cellular used its official Facebook page to proclaim its intent to launch a WP8 device in the near future. While the representative specifically mentioned Windows 8 (sans "Phone"), we reached out to US Cellular for clarification. A company spokesperson confirmed our suspicions, stating that a device running the mobile platform will indeed be launching. AMD Q1 2013 earnings: softer $146 million net loss on $1.09 billion revenue
Just two days after the earnings report of its storied rival, AMD has followed suit with a Q1 2013 earnings report of its own. The company reported a net loss for the quarter of $146 million, which stings, but isn't quite so painful as the $473 million loss that it took just one quarter earlier. Meanwhile, AMD revenue of $1.09 billion is more or less flat from the previous quarter, but has fallen by $500 million since Q1 of the previous year. Nokia Lumia: 5,6 Millionen verkaufte Devices in Q1 2013
Nach neuen Informationen hat Nokia im ersten Quartal dieses Jahres rund 5,6 Millionen Lumia-Geräte verkauft, in den meisten Märkten wurde zudem eine Verbesserung der Verkaufszahlen im Vergleich zu Q4 2012 erreicht. DevJuice: Forget iUI. Say "welcome" to Emy for web-based cross-platform mobile dev
For years, iUI has been the gold standard of iOS web development. Dating back to 2007, iUI was initially created by Joe Hewett to simplify the development of iPhone web apps using an iPhone-style look and feel. It's been stuck at its 0.4 release for some time.

Google Q1 2013 earnings: $14 billion in revenue, $3.35 billion net income
Google's out with its first quarter earnings this afternoon, and it's reporting an even $14 billion in revenue, with net revenue clocking in at $3.35 billion. That's a 31 percent increase year-over-year on the revenue side, and nearly a half billion dollar increase in net income (up from $2.89 in the same quarter of 2012). Compared to more recent quarters, though, the growth is a bit more flat: both Q3 and Q4 of 2012 were also around the $14 billion mark. Microsoft posts Q3 2013 earnings, generates $6.06 billion in profit as its CFO steps down

These days, the only iOS card game I'm playing with any regularity is SolForge -- I wish there was a little more to it, but the mechanics are very well constructed. What? You thought you were going to be able to make it through another day without an update on what's going on with AppGratis? Sorry to disappoint you -- Apple has now added insult to injury by killing push notifications for AppGratis.
The company let subscribers know this morning in an emailed newsletter that Apple had killed notifications. Apple changes One to One plan to limit data migration, assistance
Apple has quietly changed the US terms for its One to One retail service, notes ifoAppleStore. The option is available to new Mac buyers for $99 per year, and provides access to Personal Training, Group Training, and Open Training sessions, as well as one-time data migration from an old Mac or Windows computer. Under previous terms, migration could take place any time during a One to One contract. Now, however, it must be requested within the first 60 days.

Skitch update (iOS and Mac) includes PDF annotation, stamps
If you are already a Skitch user and happen to have an Evernote Premium account, a new update now allows you to annotate PDFs using the app. Once you open a PDF in Skitch you'll get a 30-day trial of the premium PDF annotation feature. All users see a new way to add graphics to documents in Skitch: stamps. Like map markers, these can be used to call out specific points with an icon and text for easy viewing. There are many icons available for call outs, like an exclamation point or heart, and you can add text next to the stamp.

Skitch for Mac and iOS Updated with PDF Annotations and Stamps [iOS Blog]
Evernote today updated Skitch for OS X and iOS to version 2.5, adding a PDF annotation feature that is aimed at Evernote Premium users. With PDF annotation, files can be modified with shapes, arrows, and text. Important passages can be highlighted and instructions can be added, which makes Skitch an even better collaboration tool. PDFs are sent with a summary of all annotations. The new version supports Stamps, which are designed to offer fast feedback. For example, Stamps can be placed to indicate whether something is liked, disliked, or unclear in a document. Skitch has also added a plain text notation mode and a Tool Tip to explain the new features.

Adobe teases Shake Reduction feature for Photoshop
Adobe has posted a brief teaser video for an upcoming Photoshop feature, Shake Reduction. The option will allow people to globally or selectively reduce the blur created by factors like camera shake and/or slow shutter speeds. iOS leads Android in mobile ad revenue
Mobile advertising platform Opera Mediaworks have released their State of Mobile Advertising report for Q1 2013 and it shows iOS ads generate more traffic than any other mobile platform, including Android. Opera collects data through its advertising subsidiaries, AdMarvel, Mobile Theory, and 4th Screen, which collectively serve 50+ billion ad impressions each month.
The study highlights three drivers of the current mobile advertising market. First, that competition is still tight between iPhone and Android even with iPhone's current advertising dominance. iPhone jailbreak hack puts Facebook Messenger all over iOS
The Verge is reporting that a new jailbreak tweak to the Facebook iOS app enables the Chat Heads feature to run on iOS the same way it does on Android. In other words, Chat Heads can now permeate the entire iOS UI if you simply can't get enough of Facebook messaging.
The tweak was put together by 21-year old Canadian Adam Bell who is planning to have it available for download this weekend on Cydia once he works out a few kinks.
As for how Bell added his own enhancements to Chat Heads, The Verge reports:

Developer Saied Ghaffari of It's About Time was perplexed by something recently; while there are good dedicated YouTube apps for iOS, there's nothing similar for OS X. Instead of a clean, fast app for discovering and viewing YouTube videos, Mac users must rely on web browsers and the YouTube site. The result isn't that great -- you can't type or read comments if you put the video in full-screen mode, scrubbing doesn't work very well, and the video pages have a lot of wasted white space. Apple revises One to One program for new customers
ifoAppleStore is reporting that Apple has changed the terms of the Apple Store One to One service, limiting how much Apple Store employees will do in terms of data migration for new Mac purchases.
One to One service is offered to purchasers of new Macs for US$99 per year, providing not only data migration from a PC or Mac, but also Personal, Group and Open Training. With the new terms of service, customers can only request data migration within the first 60 days of the service, instead of any time during the one year service term.
In addition, the Apple Store staff will now only help install any compatible Apple hardware that was purchased with the new Mac, and will only "assist" with install

Photo shows alleged rear shell for low-cost iPhone
A new photo represents the first leak of a rear shell for Apple's low-cost iPhone, claims Tactus. Unlike the shell for the iPhone 5, which mixes glass and aluminum, the one for the low-cost phone is believed to be made of uniform plastic, rounded at the edges. The component is estimated to be about 0.4 to 0.6mm thick, but part of a device that might measure 9mm thick, 120mm tall, and about 62 to 65mm in width. Verizon Q1 results show extra 677,000 wireless subscribers
Verizon has managed to secure an extra 677,000 subscribers to its postpaid wireless service in the first quarter of this year. Quarterly financial results released by the carrier show it as having a total of 720,000 net retail connections for the quarter, with its entire wireless subscriber base hitting 98.9 million, a year-on-year increase of 6.4 percent.

Apple has temporarily stopped ordering any parts for Mac systems, and hasn't sent any word of when orders might resume, supply chain sources tell DigiTimes. The universal iOS LinkedIn app has been updated to version 6.0. The update brings a dramatic overhaul to the iPhone app, plus bug fixes and improved performance on the iPad.

Neue OS X 10.8.4 Vorabversion erschienen
Etwas mehr als eine Woche nach der Veröffentlichung der zweiten Beta von OS X 10.8.4 veröffentlichte Apple am gestrigen Abend die dritte Vorabversion. Registrierte Entwickler können die Beta mit der Build-Nummer «12E33a» über die Developer-Homepage herunterladen.
Die Entwickler sollen sich zum wiederholten Male auf Safari, Wi-Fi und die Grafik-Treiber konzentrieren.
In der letzten Beta-Version wurden Hinweise auf die nächste WLAN-Generation 802.11ac gefunden. Dieser Umstand deutet darauf hin, dass Apple bereits bei der nächsten Überarbeitung der Mac-Modelle die neue Funktechnologie einsetzen könnte. Damit könnten im Wi-Fi-Netzwerk Bandbreiten von bis zu 1.3 Gigabit pro Sekunde erreicht werden.

Verizon added 677,000 subscribers, made a $4.8 billion profit in Q1 2013
Last quarter, Verizon was able to add a record high 2.1 million subscribers, but at the cost of a $1.93 billion net loss. iPad 5 Estimated to Be 15% Thinner, 25% Lighter Than Current iPad

Chinese government orders Apple to remove 'obscene content' from its App Store
As a part of a sweep that cited some 198 websites, China government officials directed Apple to remove obscene content listed in its App Store in the country. Apple recently faced criticism about, and eventually apologized for, its warranty policy in China. The Financial Times reported an app was pulled earlier this month for providing access to banned books, just days after the warranty issue surface. As it has done almost every week for the last few months, Apple on Wednesday seeded a new build of the next update to 10.8 Mountain Lion on Wednesday. Study: Play catching up App Store on app downloads, but not revenue
The Apple App Store and Google Play are now nearly equal in terms of download volume, according to new data by analytics firm App Annie. "While the iOS App Store and Google Play both had solid gains in app downloads last quarter, Google Play had a higher percentage growth rate as well as a greater gain in absolute downloads," the firm writes. "As of Q1 2013, Google Play's app downloads were close to 90 percent of iOS App Store downloads." The App Store is, however, continuing to do far better than Play in terms of generating revenue.

Apple motion: Google patent discovery search methodology flawed
As part of the 2014 Apple versus Samsung smartphone patent trial workup, Apple filed a motion to compel discovery from Google. As the deadline for a program that would replace defective MacBook bottom cases under certain circumstances approaches, Apple has moved to extend the program for free replacement from two years after purchase to four years. Apple India sees iPhone boost to bottom line
TUAW has recently reported several times about Apple's efforts to tap the huge market for iPhones in India. Now the Times of India is reporting that Apple's net profit for the India business unit has skyrocketed 431 percent year over year.

iPhones will play a big part in the upcoming automotive revolution
I just spent a few days in San Francisco attending a conference sponsored by Telenav, one of the leaders in navigation and services in both the automotive and smartphone worlds.
Much of what is discussed at these kinds of get-togethers is off the record, giving reporters a sneak peek at upcoming technology. One session that was on-the-record was a panel of industry experts on the future of electronics, particularly navigation in cars.
I think this panel pointed the way to what we will be seeing in future years, and hints at how important the iPhone will be. There was input from people at Ford, Delphi, Nuance, Gracenote and, of course, Telenav.

LG's curved OLED displays to arrive in the second half of 2013
Alongside its wafer-thin 4K TVs, LG's curved OLED display was another product that occupies a special place in our CES memories. Fortunate, then, that the product has taken a step away from vaporware, with the company's Vice President of Home Entertainment Europe, Thomas Lee, confirming that its "world-first" curved OLED TVs will launch in the second half of this year. Funny or Die's 'iSteve' movie debuts to mixed reviews
A satirical look at the life of Steve Jobs starring former Apple pitchman Justin Long has debuted after being delayed slightly due to the bombing at the Boston Marathon on Monday. The film from comedy site Funny or Die, called iSteve, is an 79-minute romp through some of the well-known chapters of the life of Apple's co-founder and former CEO. In addition to Long -- who plays Jobs from the age of 19 onwards -- the movie stars Jorge Garcia (Lost) as Steve Wozniak, Venture Brothers voice James Urbaniak as Bill Gates and Michaela Watkins as Melinda Gates.

Stampsy for iPad launches as digital media content creation tool
A new app for digital content presentation called Stampsy (free) has debuted for the iPad, with the goal of giving users easy-to-use tools to help them arrange and integrate visual images and text into cohesive "digital experiences" that can be shared on the web. Pictures can be imported from a photo library or Dropbox and combined with text and layout tools, making the ability to post a visually-interesting, creative effort online more expressive that is seen in template-driven methods such as Tumblr or blogs.

Apple to Court: Pinch-to-Zoom patent invalidation will take until 2017
Court filings for the 2014 Apple versus Samsung case continue to fly in Judge Lucy Koh's courtroom in the Northern District of California. In the latest round of filings, Samsung requested that the next patent trial between the pair be stayed, pending reexaminations of two key Apple patents by the US Patent Trade Office. Apple filed its response yesterday to the request, saying that a stay of the trial pending the review would be ""unwarranted and prejudicial" as at the earliest, the patents wouldn't be truly invalidated until the middle of 2017 or later.

Wunderlist announces Wunderlist Pro for Mac, iOS and the web
The folks behind Wunderlist, the excellent to-do app that recently updated to version 2, have announced that Wunderlist Pro is almost ready for prime time. Wunderlist is a free service and is remaining free, but Wunderlist Pro is a new premium service that's designed to help get Wunderlist working with teams of all sizes, from just a few people to much larger groups, on all of Apple's platforms.

Apple Extends Repair Program for MacBook Bottom Case Defects [Mac Blog]
In 2011, Apple announced a worldwide repair program for MacBooks with a defective bottom case, which caused the rubber surface to separate from the hard plastic casing. The program originally stated that Apple would replace the bottom case of any affected MacBook for two years from the date of purchase, but the company recently extended the replacement period to four years from the original date of purchase. YoWindow for iPhone ($0.99) is a super cute weather app that combines information with good looks into a handy little utility. I've been using it for about a week and, while it won't satisfy hardcore weather junkies, those who simply want to know, "What's it gonna be like?" should enjoy YoWindow.

AAPL drops below $400 briefly; Cirrus Logic inventory numbers blamed
Apple Inc. (AAPL) stock fell to its lowest price since December 2011 today following a report from Cirrus Logic, a producer of chips used in the iPhone and iPad, that it was dealing with an inventory surplus.
Cirrus Logic said one of its customers is moving to a newer component causing the slowdown, The Associated Press reports. It did not specify which customer made the switch, but Apple is reportedly its biggest customer.
