The Engadget Interview: Bre Pettis talks MakerBot's Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner
The job of kicking off this year's South By Southwest Interactive conference fell firmly in the hands of none other than MakerBot CEO Bre Pettis -- and really a show like this couldn't ask for a better, more enthusiastic evangelist for emerging technologies. And certainly the fact that Pettis' company has firm ties to the event doesn't hurt matters either. Pettis spent much of his talk espousing the "next industrial revolution," a phenomenon in which he sees desktop 3D printing playing a pivotal role -- MakerBot's 3D printing specifically, if he has his way. Apple CEO Tim Cook 'May Testify' in E-Books Antitrust Lawsuit
Apple CEO Tim Cook may testify in the e-books antitrust lawsuit filed against Apple and book publishers by the United States Department of Justice, reports Bloomberg. The lawsuit was originally filed in April of 2012, and has focused on the so-called 'agency model' for pricing ebooks that Apple attempted to negotiate with a number of publishers. Some Retina MacBook Pro users report rampant fan activity
Reports have surfaced that some users who purchased a Retina MacBook Pro are experiencing mostly unexplained bursts of system cooling fans shifting to fast speed. A 27 page thread on the Apple support forums is collecting user data on the phenomenon, with no user fix apparent. Apple has yet to issue a formal response on the matter.

Neo is known for building smartphones with price tags so low that a Nexus 4 would seem like a luxury. Scosche has launched a new iPhone 5 case that can be secured to a bike's handlebars or frame. The reqKASE is made from silicone and uses an adjustable strap that can be mounted vertically or horizontally. PayPal debuts iOS SDK for in-app checkouts
Online payment service PayPal has launched a new iOS SDK for developers. The tool should let iOS apps integrate PayPal checkouts directly, including optional direct credit card payments. For those, apps will have to rely on PayPal's card.io system, which involves taking a photo of a credit card for scanning purposes.

GifMill brings animated GIF creation to your iPhone
Animated GIFs kind of come and go in popularity, but seem to be having a bit of a resurgence lately. GifMill is a free app for your iPhone or iPod touch that lets you take photos and create animated GIF images you can share with friends via Tumblr, Twitter, email or text message.
You can also use photos from your camera roll or even use short videos. Up to 100 stills can be used to create the GIF. Once the frames are selected you can control the frame rate and quality, and rearrange or delete frames from your sequence.

Apple eBay shop Macs $100 less than official refurbs
At its eBay refurb store, Apple is now selling the 13.3-inch MacBook Air for $899 -- $100 less than the price of a similarly refurbished model at the official online Apple store, AppleInsider notes. Other products are also getting unusual deals, such as 32 and 64GB iPod touches, which are going for $179 and $229 -- $30 and $50 off Apple's normal refurb costs. Verizon models of the iPad 2 are listed at $429 for 32GB and $529 for 64GB, in each case $50 less than normal.

PayPal introducing new iOS SDK, APIs at SXSW
PayPal has announced that it's bringing a new iOS SDK and some new API tools to SXSW next week. As you might expect, the API will allow apps to use PayPal's tools to integrate payment information directly rather than having to go through a separate authorization page. As you can see on the official website, devs will be able to simply use a few method calls to set up PayPal payments, and get proof back that payment has taken place.

Securus updates GPS pet tracking hardware to 2.0
Mobile safety and security developer Securus has unveiled the SpotLite 2.0, a GPS pet locator that enables tracking and location of cats and dogs. The new 2.0 version, in addition to being waterproof, enables pet owners to keep tabs on companion animals online with an Apple, BlackBerry or Android smartphone or tablet device, by sending a text message, and also view turn-by-turn GPS directions to recover pets on the run.

Floating around this week was a wonderful story from former Apple Store employee Chris Gonzales. He tells the tale of a group of deaf students who visited his Apple Store to purchase new Macs. After struggling for a few minutes because he couldn't communicate with them, he came up with the idea of using an iMac to type things out. Patient has 75 percent of his skull replaced with 3D-printed prosthetic
Earlier this week, an un-named man in the United States had 75 percent of his skull replaced with a 3D-printed plastic prosthetic, the first-known operation of its kind. The transplant was carried out by Oxford Performance Materials, which received approval to carry out such procedures from the US Food and Drug Administration last month. The company crafted the artificial skull based on a 3D scan of the patient's head, and the polyetherketoneketone prosthetic sports holes meant to encourage the growth of new cells and bone. PayPal Creates iOS SDK to Integrate Checkouts and Payments Directly in Apps [iOS Blog]
PayPal today introduced a new mobile SDK that allows iOS app developers to integrate PayPal checkout and mobile credit card payment mechanisms directly into their apps. Currently, iOS developers can include PayPal payment buttons into their apps, but users are redirected to Safari to complete their transactions. Now, users will be able to pay without ever leaving the app, including using PayPal's card.io technology that allows users to pay with a credit card by taking a picture of it rather than manually entering the credit card number. Senator renews FAA skirmish to loosen in-flight gadget rules
In a frustrated letter to FAA director Michael Huerta on Thursday, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) expressed concern with Huerta's "lack of direct engagement" on the subject of in-flight use of personal electronic devices. The senator is proposing a bill to greatly increase the usage window of cellphones, tablets, music players, and other electronic devices before, during, and after the flight, including during takeoff and landing.

Alleged Apple eBay Store Offers Better Deals than Apple Refurb Store
In late 2012, a new Apple seller appeared on eBay, offering Apple-certified refurbished products. The storefront, known simply as Refurbished-Outlet, is believed to be run by Apple itself. As 9to5Mac pointed out in November, the Refurbished-Outlet seller makes the same promises that Apple does when selling refurbished products on its online Apple Store, with a full one-year warranty and a quality inspection by Apple. Court demands Apple evidence in location tracking case
Apple must show how it's complying with earlier court orders to turn over evidence in a lawsuit over iOS location tracking, US Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal has ruled. Plaintiffs have accused the company of withholding documents; either way, Grewal states that it's "unacceptable" that Apple waited over three months to show compliance with a November order. FTC report on mobile payments raises concerns about 'cramming' on carrier billing
The FTC held a workshop on mobile payments last year, and it's now followed that up with a full report that raises a few concerns and offers some recommendations for the industry. Those include the expected issues of privacy and security, which the FTC encourages companies to step up their efforts on, as well as the issue of billing disputes. On that latter front, the FTC draws attention to one problem in particular known as "cramming," in which companies or individuals place fraudulent charges on a user's cellphone bill. iOS tops among airline passengers
Gogo, the in-flight Internet provider for when you're cruising at 37,00 feet, says iOS devices are by far the most prolific users of its service.
According to Gogo's blog, tablets and smartphones account for 67 percent of the devices connecting to its service, and laptops account for the remaining 33 percent. AT&T Plus trial winding down on March 31st
AT&T has been testing the viability of loyalty rewards through a limited AT&T Plus trial over the past year. Unfortunately, time's up: as you can see in the letter above, the carrier is shutting down the Plus experiment on March 31st, with discounts and fee waivers ending for existing members on May 31st. Apple and Samsung are expected to add wireless charging to their phones in 2013, industry sources for DigiTimes claim. The people don't elaborate, except to suggest that Apple will probably develop its own wireless charging system, whether integrated directly into iPhones or dependent on connected accessories. Skype 4.6 for iPhone, iPad improves calling experience and more
Skype for iOS has been updated to version 4.6, with improvements to the experience of making and receiving Skype calls as well as numerous bug fixes.
There's been a complete overhaul to the UI when making and receiving calls. On first impressions, I wouldn't say it's any easier to use than the previous version, but it's a cleaner look that has an air of freshness to it!
According to Skype's blog, other major improvements include one-to-one chats appearing in the correct order and the ability to select messages as read in a few taps. Additionally, there have been bug fixes to Voice Over, conversations, file-transfer and account editing.

Apple on Thursday filed an objection to putting its second US lawsuit against Samsung on hold while the verdict in the first is reviewed, Bloomberg reports. Rumor has low-cost iPhone using Qualcomm Snapdragon
Apple is planning to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor in the low-cost iPhone, and manufacture it using TSMC's 28nm production lines, claims an industry watcher quoted by the China Times. The move would be unusual, since Apple currently relies on its own A-series processors for iOS devices, which are produced at a Samsung facility in Texas. The Times' report does say, though, that Apple will continue to use A-series chips in other devices.

Leap Motion-Hack: 3D-Hologramm mit Fingersteuerung

Noch eine smarte Aktion mit Leap Motion. Diesmal kein Game sondern ein 3D-Hologramm, das per Gesten steuerbar ist, fast wie bei Iron Man, aber auch nur fast. Von Robbie Tilton stammt dieses Interface auf Basis eines Plexiglasprisma. Der hier zu sehende Globus kann per Fingerbewegungen wie bei Google Earth gedreht werden. A German court has revealed it is inclined to ban Google Maps in the country, as part of ongoing patent litigation. A friend told me his iPhone was broken because the screen no longer rotated in Safari, Mail or any other app. He suspected the accelerometer was broken, but was confused because it still worked in games and apps like Google Maps.

Digitimes meldet jetzt, dass die Geräte dadurch 10 bis 20 Prozent billiger werden könnten. Bislang sollen nur 10% der Verkäufe von Notebooks auf Windows 8 Touchscreen Notebooks entfallen.

Google und MPEG LA einigen sich im VP8-Streit

Googles VP8-Videocodec «WebM» bleibt gebührenfrei
Mit dem «VP8/WebM»-Videoformat wollte Google einen neuen Standard für Internet-Videos etablieren. Google stellte «VP8/WebM» im Frühjahr 2010 als «lizenzfreie» Alternative zu H.264 vor. Mozilla und Opera unterstützen das Format als Kooperationspartner. Die «MPEG Licensing Administration» sah durch VP8 jedoch eigene Patente verletzt und leitete rechtliche Schritte gegen Google ein. Die MPEG LA hat sich nun mit Google geeinigt — VP8/WebM darf gebührenfrei bleiben.
Google erhält laut der Vereinbarung von MPEG eine Lizenz für die essentiellen H.264-Techniken in VP8/WebM. Google darf diese Technologien ausserdem weiter-lizenzieren.
Während Google derzeit bereits am Nachfolger VP9 arbeitet, fokussiert sich der Grossteil der Branche auf MPEGs nächsten Codec HEVC bzw. «H.265». Es darf damit gerechnet werden, dass Apple noch in diesem Jahr Unterstützung für H.265 anbieten

Arbeiter in Apples Zulieferbetrieben leisteten weniger Überzeit
Nachdem in den 2000er-Jahren unfreiwillige Überstunden zu einem branchenweiten Standard in der IT-Industrie geworden sind, hat sich Apple im Jahr 2011 dazu entschlossen, die Arbeitszeiten der Angestellten bei den Zulieferbetrieben systematisch zu erfassen und darüber Rechenschaft abzulegen. Gemäss dem neusten Bericht ist es Apples Zulieferern gelungen, die von Apple vorgeschriebene 60-Stunden-Woche fast vollständig einzuhalten. Von rund einer Million Arbeitern arbeiteten im Januar 2013 lediglich 1 Prozent mehr als die von Apple vorgeschriebenen 60 Stunden pro Woche. Damit arbeiteten noch nie so wenige Arbeiter zu lange wie in diesem Monat. Gemäss Apple arbeitete ein durchschnittlicher Arbeiter in einem Zulieferbetrieb weniger als 50 Stunden pro Woche. Über das ganze Jahr hinweg gesehen arbeiteten 92 Prozent der Arbeiter in den Zulieferbetrieben weniger als die von Apple maximal tolerierten 60 Stunden pro Woche.

Test Studio for iOS 2.0 automates reviewing, user feedback
Software development tool maker Telerik has released an automated testing tool for iOS applications called Test Studio for iOS (free). The program introduces a cloud sync web portal for both test automation and beta user feedback and works with web, native and hybrid apps. GoGo: in-flight Internet use 84 percent iOS, 16 Android
GoGo Inflight, which offers paid Internet service on various airlines serving North America has reported that mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets now make up 67 percent of the devices being used to connect to its service, with tablets just edging out laptops and smartphones. Motorola workforce to drop by 10 percent, cuts being made in US, China and India

Rovio releasing a game based on The Croods movie
Rovio has announced another game, and it's yet another surprising title from the Finish developer of Angry Birds. GroupMe Updates App with Ability to Split Costs and Collect Payments from Friends [iOS Blog]
GroupMe today updated their group chat app to version 4.1, adding a gallery view and a feature called Split, which allows users to split costs and collect money from their group. The company detailed potential uses for the feature on its blog:You can start a Split within any of your groups, just like you can attach a photo or a location. Studies: iOS enterprise share up; iPad still king of tablets
Two new studies -- one focusing on enterprise usage of mobile devices, the other looking at tablets -- have shored up conventional wisdom on the distribution of platforms, relegating everything but iOS and Android offerings to "other," but providing some new insights and a hint of changing trends. Google concludes legal wrangling with MPEG LA over VP8, WebM
The patent and licensing disagreement between Google and video codec licensing group MPEG LA has concluded. MPEG LA is granting a license to techniques essential to the Google-promoted VP8 video codec (and retroactively to earlier incarnations). The agreement also grants Google the right to sublicense VP8 to any takers of the currently badly adopted codec. As a result of the agreement, MPEG LA will stop trying to develop a VP8 patent pool.

Daily iPhone App: Sneezies Match is a good idea made better
I know developer Gavin Bowman of Retro Dreamer (co-creator of apps like Velocispider and Duckers, along with artist Craig Sharpe) fairly well, having met up with him at a number of different conferences and events in the past. His studio released a game called Socks a little while ago, which was just a fun, simple puzzle game (meant for kids, really) where you matched socks of similar patterns. LG Optimus G for Sprint updated to Android 4.1.2
Today's been a good day for smartphone updates. Facebook previews upcoming app-inspired newsfeed for desktop and mobile
Facebook today announced a major revamp coming to its signature News Feed every user sees when they launch the Facebook app or login to Facebook on the desktop. The updated News Feed is heavily inspired by Facebook's mobile app, which was first developed for iOS.
While there are several changes to the News Feed coming, the most obvious will appear in the desktop browser. Analytics firm Applause launches the Applause Index
I'm not sure how useful this idea is, but it is interesting, and we'll see how it all plays out. Applause is an analytics firm that purports to measure app quality and user satisfaction, by scanning the App Store for rankings, sales and reviews (there are a few other companies that do this already, like App Annie and Distimo). But Applause's innovation is that it boils an app's performance down into one 0-100 number, called the Applause Score.
