President Obama to nominate Tom Wheeler as FCC Chairman tomorrow
As Julius Genachowski winds down his five-year term as Chairman of the FCC, rumors of his successor are in full swing. Now, Engadget has confirmed with a White House official that President Obama will nominate industry veteran, Tom Wheeler, for the position, in an announcement that will come tomorrow. According to Wheeler's profile on his personal blog, he currently identifies himself as a venture capitalist and sits on the boards of Roundbox, UpdateLogic, Twisted Pair Solutions, EarthLink and TNS. Briefly: AT&T $100 trade-in credit, Firecore Infuse video player app
Starting May 1, AT&T is offering a $100 credit off the purchase of a new phone in its corporate retail stores. The promotion applies to any smartphone AT&T sells including the Galaxy S 4 and iPhone 5, and gives owners of phones less than three years old in good working condition the credit. Microsoft's next revision of Facebook for Windows Phone 8 hits beta
Last year's revision to Facebook for Windows Phone may have gotten fans closer to the Facebook grail, but it was still lagging behind its iOS and Android siblings. Apple Seeds Build 12E40 of OS X Beta 10.8.4 Developers [Mac Blog]
Apple today issued build 12E40 of OS X Mountain Lion to developers, a week after build 12E36 was released. Build 12E40 marks the fifth beta iteration of OS X 10.8.4. Apple erects product displays outside upcoming Berlin Apple Store
Apple has erected special displays promoting the iPhone 5 outside of its first Berlin Apple Store, scheduled to open May 3rd, notes German site ApfelPage. The displays -- featuring mock, oversized white iPhones -- are unusual for an Apple Store, but may be necessary to help draw attention to the outlet. Although the building the store is housed in has an elaborate facade, the only other signs of Apple's presence are two small logos by the doorways.

Nest updates iOS app and adds notifications
The popular Nest Thermostat has updated its internal software to version 3.5, and pushed out a new iOS app to control it. Most people should have had their thermostats updated automatically at some point yesterday. The software is being billed as summer enhancements to the thermostat aimed at better handling of high temperatures.

AT&T Announces Upgrade to In-Store Smartphone Trade-In Program [iOS Blog]
AT&T has announced an upgrade to its in-store smartphone trade-in program. The plan will give an instant credit of at least $100 for any smartphone that is less than three years old, with more recent and valuable phones receiving larger credits. The credits are good for the purchase any AT&T smartphone or accessories, meaning someone could trade in an older Android smartphone for a new iPhone 4S, or half-price on a 16GB iPhone 5. Apple and Samsung headed to court this November to calculate new damages amount
When Apple was awarded a US$1.05 billion judgement against Samsung last Summer, you might have assumed that Samsung would promptly cut Apple a check and focus on any number of their other ongoing legal entanglements with Apple.

BlackBerry CEO predicts 'no reason to have a tablet' in five years
BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins believes that the future of tablets are on borrowed time, giving the hardware platform five years to live. Apple wins patents on smart contact service, physical input for iOS
Apple has won a pair of new patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office, says AppleInsider. One, Method and system for facilitating contacting people using electronic devices, describes a software system in which a person can be automatically informed of the best way to contact someone, and on the receiving side, pick what the best contact method for a given time is. In an example provided by Apple, the contacting party might want to talk to someone who's currently driving, but email or a text message might be more appropriate.

Russian Billionaire Buys $100 Million in Apple Stock [Mac Blog]

Vine 1.1 update enables the front-facing camera and user mentions
Vine, the micro-filmmaking cousin of Twitter, has just been updated to version 1.1 with a few important new features. The biggest addition is the ability to use the front-facing camera on your iPhone, making it easier than ever to switch angles on the fly. No longer will you have to restart filming a video because you were trying to film your own face and accidentally aimed over your shoulder.
Version 1.1 also brings user mentions to posts, similar to how you add friends on Twitter. Simply add an @ -- either manually or via the new "mention" button -- and type in their name like you would in Twitter. People search has been improved as well, adding the ability to look up other users by their Twitter handles. The new app is available for download right now.

New Damages Trial in Apple v. Samsung Set for November
Samsung and Apple will be heading back to court in November for a partial retrial, reports FOSS Patents. The trial follows judge Lucy Koh's March ruling that struck $450 million from the $1 billion in damages that were awarded to Apple last August, on the premise that the original damages may have been miscalculated by the jury. According to Koh, the original jury may not have had a clear understanding of the patent issues, which resulted in a lump sum award that did not distinguish between patent violations, making it impossible for the court to determine which part of the damages were applicable to each patent.

Russia's richest man takes a $100 million interest in Apple
Over the past few weeks, shares of Apple have been trading at 52-week lows. Earlier this month, shares of Apple dipped below US$400 a share for the first time since 2011. Shockingly, Apple had a P/E ratio lower than Dell's for a few days last week.

The richest man in Russia, Alisher Usmanov, recently bought $100 million in Apple shares, Bloomberg reports. While cautioning that "nothing is eternal," he argues that Apple is a "very promising investment" for the next three years, pointing to the company's plan to return $100 billion to shareholders by 2015. Jawbone today launched a new API for developers, called the Up Platform. The API can deliver all of the data that the Jawbone UP collects, including steps taken, distance traveled, calories consumed, and sleep quality for use in third party apps. Apple taking ownership of patents acquired from Kodak
Last year, a group of 12 licensees bid on 1,100 digital photography patents that were being sold by Kodak as part of bankruptcy proceedings. Although the venerable photography company was hopeful that the sale would be enough to help it restructure, the portfolio sold for only US$525 million to the licensees. Those patents are now being transferred from Kodak to licensees including Apple, with the Cupertino company taking ownership of four patents in the last week.

Vine Adds Support for Mentions and Front-Facing Camera [iOS Blog]
Twitter's popular six-second video sharing app Vine has received its first major update, adding support for the iPhone's front-facing camera and Twitter mentions in posts and comments. You can now shoot with the front-facing camera. When creating a post, tap the button in the bottom left corner to try the front-facing camera. You can switch back and forth between the regular and front-facing camera as many times as you want. Vine now supports mentions, so you can tag people in your post. Apple already taking steps to prepare for its upcoming debt sale
Apple last week announced that it would embark on a massive stock repurchasing plan whereby it will purchase US$60 billion worth of its own shares by the end of 2015. In a press release on the matter, Apple called it the "largest single share repurchase authorization in history."
What's more, the company also announced a 15% increase to its quarterly dividend, upping the payout from $2.65 to $3.05 per share.
Taken together, Apple's capital return program is designed to return a total of $100 billion to shareholders.
That's a lot of dough, but with upwards of $145 billion in the bank, there's no denying that Apple has the cash to make that happen. There's just one slight problem -- the bulk o

Hulu: Paid subscriptions have doubled to four million in past year

Judge sets Nov. 12th date for Apple v. Samsung damages retrial
US District Court Judge Lucy Koh has set a November 12th date for a trial to recalculate damages vacated from last year's initial, $1.05 billion Apple v. Samsung ruling, reports say. On March 1st, Koh issued an order vacating $450.5 million from the original judgment, owing to a questionable jury outcome which set only one damage figure per device despite multiple patents being involved in each instance. The $450.5 million figure did come down on Monday though, since Koh reversed a ruling on the AT&T edition of the Galaxy S II, returning $40.5 million back to Apple.

Consumer Reports has announced that Apple has come out on top again -- and bested its previous score -- in providing consumer tech support to its users.

Original iPhone to be obsolete at Apple stores
The original iPhone will soon reach "obsolete" status at Apple retail stores. Obsolete status means that a product is not eligible for repairs or parts replacement even if the customer pays for it. The date the original iPhone reaches obsolete status is June 11, 2013, according to 9to5Mac, which obtained a leaked memo revealing the date.

Intels neue CPU-Generation «Haswell» kommt am 4. Juni
Intel hat am 26. April um 08:00 im firmeneigenen Blog mitgeteilt, dass die nächste Generation der Intel-Prozessoren in 3’337’200’000’000’000 Nanosekunden in den Handel kommen wird. Diese Zeit entspricht 38 Tagen und 16 Stunden, womit der vierte Juni als Veröffentlichungstermin feststeht. Ob die Prozessoren bereits ab diesem Datum verfügbar sein werden, wurde nicht offiziell kommuniziert. In der Vergangenheit waren allerdings bereits am Präsentationstag genügend Prozessoren an Lager.

Occasionally, my 1080p Apple TV (ATV) loses interest in connecting to my local network. More specifically, if I go to the Network setting I find no IP address listed. That's right. The IP address listing is empty. There isn't even an invalid self-assigned (169.x.x.x) address. US-Verbraucherorganisation: Apple mit dem besten Support
Laut den neusten Resultaten der jährlichen «Computer Tech Support»-Umfrage der US-Verbraucherorganisation «Consumer Reports» konnte Apple die Bestnote vom vergangenen Jahr weiter verbessern. Insgesamt kam Apple auf einen Wert von 86 von möglichen 100 Punkten. Kein anderes IT-Unternehmen erreicht einen solch hohen Support-Standard wie Apple, berichtet die Organisation. Lediglich einige unabhängige IT-Dienstleister schafften es bei der Kundenzufriedenheit in die Nähe von Apple. Lenovo kommt als nächster grosser IT-Konzern hinter Apple auf einen Wert von 63 Punkten.
Gut abgeschnitten hat vor allem die «Genius Bar» der Apple Retail Stores. Die Experten von Apple waren in der Lage, 88 Prozent der Probleme im Store zu lösen. Bei der Konkurrenz waren es lediglich rund 70 Prozent der Probleme, welche auf dieselbe Weise gelöst werden konnten.

Obwohl weder eine Vorabversion von OS X 10.9 vorhanden ist noch Apple eine offizielle Ankündigung gemacht hat, will 9to5Mac von mehreren Insidern detaillierte Informationen zu OS X 10.9 erhalten haben. Gemäss den Insidern hat sich Apple bei der Entwicklung von OS X 10.9 vor allem auf Verbesserungen für professionelle Nutzer konzentriert. Research company Informa says that app-based messaging -- such as Apple's own Messages app or the popular What'sApp for mobile devices -- has surpassed traditional SMS-based text messaging for the first time. Skype for Outlook.com preview launches in the UK, coming to the US soon
Outlook.com users will have another feature to take advantage of soon, as Skype is previewing web access to its service. Currently available in the UK and coming to the US and Germany "soon," it lets users make calls directly from their inbox via a browser plugin available for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Apple Tops Consumer Reports' Tech Support Ratings, Bests Its Own Score [Mac Blog]
Consumer Reports today released the results of its annual computer tech support survey, which revealed that Apple bested its own scores from last year while also topping every other brand-name computer manufacturer.The company scored far higher than the other big companies for the elements that make for successful online and phone support: ease of contacting staff, clarity of advice, technical knowledge, patience, and time for follow-up.Although the full details of the survey are restricted to Consumer Reports subscribers, Macworld reports that Apple's Genius Bar was able to solve 88 percent of problems for in-store support, compared to 73 percent for Staples' EasyTech and 70 percent for Best Buy's Geek Squad.

Adobe is offering customers a 20% spring discount on some of its editing software, dropping the price of Lightroom 4, Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 by $30. 11 Bit Studios has announced that Anomaly 2 now has an official release date. The game will be available for the Mac (along with Windows and Linux) on May 15. Anomaly is, of course, a popular iOS game these days, though the series started on the PC and it's returning there for the sequel. Nokia parodies Apple-Samsung phone wars in latest ad
In a new TV ad that vaguely recalls the Tareyton cigarette slogan "I'd rather fight than switch" from the 1960s, a new commercial for the Nokia Lumia 920 and its Windows Phone 8 OS pokes fun at the war between Apple and Samsung (and their respective users) in an amusing manner, portraying Nokia's offering as being outside the fray and a fresh alternative. The ad features a brawl breaking out at a wedding between iPhone and Galaxy users and features a number of witty moments, including the Siri signature sound and man with an Apple tattoo.

Daily iPhone App: Robot Unicorn Attack 2 turns Adult Swim's biggest hit freemium
Adult Swim has built up a nice stable of games on the App Store, and the biggest workhorse in it is Robot Unicorn Attack, a Flash game that's an endless runner where you play as the titular creature dashing and jumping to 80s music playing in the background.
