Apple deals: iMac, iPod, iPad
Apple's online store currently offers a wide selection of refurbished iMacs, iPods and iPads. The 21.5-inch iMac with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive has been reduced by $200 to $1,099. For $1,269 is the 21.5-inch iMac with a 2.9GHz Intel quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive.

Forums: Which MacBook Pro is faster?
Yesterday in the MacNN forums, a discussion was started about which MacBook is faster, the 13-inch Retina model or the non-Retina model with many stating they would prefer a Retina model regardless of speed. Verizon changes upgrade cycle from 20 months to 24 months
Verizon today posted an update on their website indicating that subscribers will no longer be eligible for early upgrades 20 months into their contract. Instead, subscribers will have to wait a full 24 months before becoming eligible for subsidized upgrade pricing.
The new rule will be applicable to customers who entered into a Verizon contract in January 2012 or later.
In alignment with the terms of the contract, customers on a two-year agreement will be eligible for an upgrade at 24 months vs. today's early upgrade eligibility at 20 months. This change aligns the upgrade date with the contract end date and is co

Rockstar shares the Grand Theft Auto soundtracks on iTunes and Spotify
Rockstar, the developers of the very popular Grand Theft Auto series, has kindly set up playlists for every one of the series' radio stations, for use in both iTunes and Spotify. Australian court orders Apple to pay for retail construction
A Queensland state court recently ordered Apple to continue to pay for its share of construction in the historic MacArthur Chambers building in Brisbane, Australia, say ifoAppleStore sources. Apple was at one point working on a store in the location, but cancelled it without explanation. The construction work is needed so that the space is in fit condition to be leased out to another tenant.

Funny Or Die's Allison Hord discusses making Jobs biopic
Funny or Die producer Allison Hord recently stopped by Bloomberg TV's Bloomberg West to discuss the comedy network's upcoming Steve Jobs "biopic" iSteve. The project originally started as a fake trailer mocking all of the Steve Job biopic projects Hollywood was working on at the time, until someone suggested they just go ahead and make their own movie. So they wrote the script in 72 hours and shot the film in five days.

Verizon lengthens mobile upgrade timetable from 20 to 24 months
Verizon has issued a revision to its mobile device policy, restricting upgrades even further. With the new terms, customers on a two-year agreement will be eligible for an upgrade at 24 months versus. today's early upgrade eligibility at 20 months. Verizon claims that the change "aligns the upgrade date with the contract end date and is consistent with how the majority of customers purchase new phones today."

AppGratis CEO: "Apple has not returned any of our calls"
There's yet another update in the AppGratis saga. Earlier this week, the app discovery and deals app was yanked from the App Store for violations of Apple's iOS developer guidelines.
Several statements from Apple representatives have been posted on various blogs, saying that Apple is in conversations with AppGratis. According to AppGratis CEO Simon Dawlat, those reports couldn't be further from the truth.

BlackBerry asks regulators to probe Z10 comments by analyst
BlackBerry has asked for US regulators to investigate claims made by an analyst over its flagship handset. The manufacturer is filing a dispute with the Ontario Securities Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission over comments made by Jeff Johnson of Detwiler Fenton, claiming that returns of the Z10 were exceeding sales of the handset.

T-Mobile stores see extra traffic on iPhone 5 launch day
A number of US T-Mobile stores saw small lineups today for the carrier's launch of the iPhone 5, reports say. The information is confirmed by photos, first-hand accounts, and calls to some locations. In some cases, according to AppleInsider, shops reported having a "full store" for some time after opening. Documents obtained by TmoNews reveal that T-Mobile is limiting orders to one phone per person every 14 days, and that it has over 240,000 launch units to sell.

Some users experience FaceTime, iMessage outages for the second time in one week
Apple's FaceTime and iMessage service went saw downtime Friday morning, the second such outage this week. Today's outage only lasted from 10:45 AM to 12:07 PM, but the outage on Tuesday lasted for five hours and affected the same programs. Other Apple services were not affected, and the App store remained open.
The status of Apple's online services can be tracked via the company's System Status page. Normally short outages aren't considered news, but when it's the second such disruption in the span of a week it's worth mentioning.

ASUS FonePad ships April 26th in the UK, up for pre-order now

iPhone 4 a hot commodity in India thanks to new trade-in plan
One of the most untouched markets in the world for smartphones is India, and Apple has quickly leaped to second place in the market by using a very smart pricing workaround. As noted on Electronista, Apple is now using a trade-in promotion with resellers that has tripled sales in less than a week.
In India, contracts on mobile phones are rare and customers have to pay up-front for the full cost of the phone in addition to their regular cell service plan. Apple could face "legal undertakings" in UK over in-app purchases
Remember the UK police officer who reported his son to authorities for fraud after the 13-year-old ran up a US$5,600 bill for in-app purchases on the iOS App Store?
That kind of unexpected consumer cost has thrown the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) into a tizzy, and they've announced that they'll be starting a six-month investigation into whether children are being "unfairly pressured or encouraged to pay for additional content in 'free' web and app-based games."

Analyst sources say iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone in July
Apple will announce both an iPhone 5S and a low-cost iPhone in June, and launch the hardware in July, says Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. The claim stems from a meeting with Apple vendors and suppliers during a Chinese tradeshow this week. Briefly: Defender iON coming Apr. 18, Bump loses iTunes access
Engadget has learned that Otterbox will be releasing its Defender case with iON Intelligence on April 18th. First shown at this year's CES, Otterbox's new case provides full body protection to the iPhone 4/4S along with additional power through a 1,450mAh battery. The additional should roughly double the battery life of the device with the iON Intelligence app automatically turning the external battery on and off when it's needed. The iPhone 4/4S version will be sold through Otterbox's website for $130, while models for other popular iOS and Android handhelds are currently in the works.

Court orders Apple to complete retail space
Apple is having a hard time Down Under these days. Recently a company executive had to appear before a Parliamentary inquest about why prices for its products are higher in Australia than in other countries, and now Apple has been ordered to pay for continued construction on a canceled Apple Store project.

Computer Chronicles aired on PBS during the 80s and 90s and tracked the rise of the personal computer. Not surprisingly, Apple was often featured on the program. We've stumbled upon one episode that Apple users may find interesting.
The 1998 episode kicks off with a look the new iMac G3, one of Apple's big comeback devices. It was launched under the leadership of Steve Jobs and was designed by Jonny Ive. Apple urges developers to localize, opens Chinese Support forum
Apple has sent out a memo to developers this week, urging them to localize Mac and iOS apps as well as titles on the iBookstore, notes AppleInsider. iPhone 5S: Analyst rechnet mit Killer-Feature und iRadio
Laut eines Berichtes könnte Apple dieses Jahr auf der WWDC einen neuen Internet-Dienst bzw. ein “Killer-Feature” für das iPhone 5S präsentieren.Es vergeht eigentlich kein Tag an dem nicht irgendein Top-Analyst einer großen US-Bank irgendwelche Apple-Produkte und deren Features prophezeit. Meistens sind die Berichte dieser Analysten auch noch so vage formuliert, dass man im Grunde alles hineininterpretieren könnte. Und wenn sich ihre Vorhersagen als falsch herausstellen, was sie meistens tun, suchen sie die Schuld nicht bei sich selbst, sondern natürlich bei an irgendwelchen 0815-Zulieferern, die irgendwelche Schräubchen nicht rechtzeitig liefern können.

Bing soll fünf Mal mehr verseuchte Webseiten liefern als Google

Keine gute Nachricht für Microsofts Searchengine. Bei einer Studie des AV-Test wurde ermittelt, dass Bing bei einer Stichprobe von 11 Millionen Webseiten ca. 5 Mal mehr Seiten mit Malware anzeigt als der Erzkonkurrent Google. Es dürfte Microsoft auch nicht wirklich beruhigen, dass Yandex noch 3 Mal mehr davon in seinen Suchergebnissen liefert.

Chinese man steals iPhone from bicyclist using chopsticks
A talented thief is making headlines in China after he pickpocketed an iPhone from an unsuspecting bicyclist. What makes the theft newsworthy is his method of stealing -- some careful moves and a single pair of chopsticks.
Photos of the theft hit the Internet in China and showed a man in a suit coat and jeans running alongside a group of bikes. The "suit man" then reached out with a pair of chopsticks and lifted a phone delicately out of a cyclist's pocket. Nächste iPad-Generation mit neuer LED Hintergrundbeleuchtung?
Einer Analyse von «NPD DisplaySearch» zufolge soll Apple für die fünfte Generation des iPads ein überarbeitetes Display verwenden. Überarbeitet werden sollen gemäss den Gerüchten vor allem die LED-Leisten, welche zur Beleuchtung des Displays notwendig sind. Angeblich plant Apple, die beiden LED-Leisten kleiner und energieeffizienter zu gestalten.
«NPD DisplaySearch» äussert sich nicht zu den Gerüchten, nach welchen Apple auf die zweite LED-Leiste verzichten soll und wie beim iPad der ersten und der zweiten Generation nur eine LED-Leiste verbaut. Die zweite LED-Leiste wurde notwendig, als Apple das Retina-iPad auf den Markt brachte.

Apple agrees to $53 million settlement in iPhone and iPod Touch warranty class action
Wired is reporting that Apple has agreed to a $53 million settlement in a class action suit regarding Apple's warranty practices regarding water damage in older iOS devices. The settlement agreement, which was leaked to Wired, has already been signed off on by Apple chief litigation counsel Noreen Krall and now awaits the official signatures of the remaining parties.
The lawsuit alleges that Apple improperly refused to honor warranty agreements for iPhones and iPod Touch devices which were seemingly damaged by water.

Führen Entwicklungs-Probleme zu Verspätung für iPhone 5S und iPad mini?
In den letzten Monaten wurde immer wieder über den möglichen Zeitpunkt verschiedener Produkte-Lancierungen von Apple diskutiert. Aufgrund des Konkurrenzdruckes gingen viele Analysten und Kommentatoren von einer Verkürzung der Produktzyklen der iOS-Geräte aus. Dieser Logik folgend hätten gemäss einigen Analysten bereits in den letzten Wochen die ersten überarbeiteten Geräte auf den Markt kommen sollen. Nintendo to retire Wii network services in Japan, including the Weather Channel
No one disputes that the Wii is old, but old enough to retire? It seems so, at least in the case of a number of its internet services, which Nintendo has scheduled for closure on June 28th. An End of Life notice to Japanese customers reveals that a total of six channels will be put out to pasture, including News and Weather, as will the the ability for Wii Friends to exchange data over Wii Connect24. In dieser Woche verdichteten sich die Gerüchte, nach welchen Apple spätestens in diesem Sommer einen eigenen Musik-Streaming-Dienst auf den Markt bringen könnte. Apple has taken second place in the large and growing smartphone market in India by using a clever workaround on its pricing. While offering its iPhones at roughly the same prices worldwide, in the India market the company is now employing a "trade-in" promotion with its reseller partners that has tripled sales in the space of a week. According to a settlement set to be filed in San Francisco federal court soon, Apple has agreed to pay $53 million to settle a class action suit accusing Apple of not honoring warranty repair terms. Report: Apple lands Universal Music Group for 'iRadio'
Should Apple actually succeed with its alleged plan to start up a Pandora-style streaming radio service, one of the biggest obstacles the company faced may be behind it as early as next week, if a report on The Verge is true. Bump removes ability to share iTunes tracks in latest update
We see tons of app updates come through the App Store every single day, but it's very rare that one of those updates removes functionality rather than adds it. The latest update for Bump for iPhone does exactly that, unfortunately. Apple Offers $53 Million Settlement to Customers Accused of Water Damaging their iOS Devices
Wired is reporting that Apple has agreed to pay $53 million to settle a class action lawsuit, which originated in 2010, that accuses them of failing to honor warranties on certain models of iPhones or iPod Touches. The settlement, which should be filed in San Francisco federal court in the next couple of weeks, provides cash payouts to possibly hundreds of thousands of iPhone and iPod Touch customers that say Apple did not honor either their one-year standard or two-year extended warranty. Ambrosia Software rebuffs claims it is going out of business
Ambrosia Software, a long-time maker of Mac software stretching back to System 7, is not going out of business -- at least according to its founder and president, Andrew Welch. He took to Twitter to dispel accusations that the company was closing up shop, following tweets to that effect from former coders who announced on Wednesday they had been let go. Alien Hive arrived on the App Store a little while ago, and I wrote it up as a Daily App a little bit after that. Since then, however, it's stuck in my brain, and I find myself coming back to it again and again. 3000 Kilometer entfernt: Gestohlenes MacBook bespitzelt Diebe
Bis zum 4. Februar diesen Jahres war Dom ein glücklicher Besitzer eines MacBook Pro sowie eines iPads.
An diesem Tag, während Dom gerade mit Freunden unterwegs war, stahlen Einbrecher seine geliebten Geräte aus seiner Londoner Wohnung.

Daily iPhone App: Dungeon Hunter 4 is a hack-and-slash that asks for cash
I got to see Dungeon Hunter 4 in action a few weeks ago at GDC, and now the app is out and available for free on the App Store for you to try out for yourself.
I'm torn on this one, unfortunately. On the one hand, this is an excellent game -- the graphics are extremely well done, the controls are excellent, and while it is a little repetitive, this is a very respectable dungeon crawling action game, similar in tone to the very famous (and much-loved) Diablo series. We probably shouldn't have been surprised when David Cope excitedly asked us if we'd like to see his new iPad app, as we began packing up our shoot for a forthcoming Engadget Show episode. After all, the former UC Santa Cruz music professor's name has, over the past several decades, become closely tied to the world of computer-generated music -- it figures that the journey that began with punch cards would have eventually led to tablets and smartphones.
