Android engineer: five months a 'reasonable' time for update
Google's Android Open Source Project (AOSP) engineer Jean-Baptiste Queru drew flak late Thursday after comments that many have interpreted as giving a pass on slow Android upgrade intervals. He saw Sony's Android 4.0 upgrades having rolled out in a "very reasonable time," five months after 4.0 was available, given the nature of the OS. Sony had even had a head start, since its AOSP code contributions gave it an idea of what to expect for its own upgrades, he said.

Google faces antitrust cases in Argentina, South Korea
Google and its business practices have fallen under the watchful eye of regulators in Argentine and South Korea, Google revealed in a recent SEC filing. The Argentinean Competition Commission and Korea Fair Trade Commission have each opened an investigation into "certain business practices" of the software giant. Argentina is concerned with Google's search and search advertising service and is conducting a preliminary inquiry, with which Google is cooperating.

Reuters: Apple in talks to stream films owned by Epix, no deal expected before September
It's reasonably well known at this point that Apple is looking to line up partnerships for some sort of a streaming video service. We've heard again and again that it's coming, so get ready to hum along with that 'ol tune one more time. Reuters is reporting that Apple has been in negotiations with Epix since earlier this year, hoping to secure access to films from Lions Gate, MGM and Paramount Pictures. AT&T stockholders vote down net neutrality proposal
AT&T stockholders took to the ballot box today at their annual meeting and voted not only to reelect the entire board of directors, but also on a number of measures concerning how the company should conduct business. Chief amongst them was a provision that would have required the carrier to operate its network according to the tenets of net neutrality. Unfortunately for you (unless you're an AT&T exec), the proposal was voted down by a pretty stunning margin. 94.1 percent of shareholders opposed, with only 5.9 casting their voice in favor of true network neutrality. Celeb Apple iPhone 4S ads vie with Samsung's for popularity
Apple's new turn towards celebrity iPhone 4S ads is having an effect on viewers, Ace Metrix gauged Friday. The Zooey Deschanel and Samuel L. Jackson TV spots were the most effective ads of the week of April 20, beating out two Samsung Galaxy Note ads. They weren't the most effective ads so far in 2012, as one of Samsung's earliest feature-focused Galaxy Note ads from February just slightly pulled ahead.

US iPhone app downloads drop 30 percent in March
Daily US iPhone app downloads fell 30 percent month-over-month in March, from 6.35 million to 4.45 million, according to mobile marketing firm Fiksu. The company adds that it was the second straight month of decline in the course of tracking, although the January-February transition was much less severe, dipping only from 6.79 million.

In here, it's always Friday(R), and you can always pay for your food and booze with your iPhone. Casual dining chain T.G.I. Friday's has announced that iPhone owners can now use a mobile payment option called Tabbedout to pay their bills. The option is part of a free mobile app called Friday's that came out a few days ago.
You'll be able to launch the app and enter your credit card info as a payment option. Once you're ready to pay up, the app will use the credit card on file to settle your bill. Samsung denies orchestrating Wake Up anti-Apple campaign
Samsung on Friday gave a statement denying that it was responsible for the Wake Up campaign 'protesting' at Apple's retail store in Sydney, Australia. The company told SlashGear that it wasn't involved at all with the campaign, which makes no mention of any company or organization's name. Apple shuts down Chomp for Android in wake of acquisition
Apple has severed all Android ties in the app discovery service Chomp, GigaOM reports. The Android app has been discontinued; on the Chomp website, "Android" has been removed as a search option, leaving only iPhone and iPad titles. HP Slate 8 render leaks, shows first true Windows 8 tablet
The first production Windows 8 tablet may have been uncovered early in a presentation believed leaked on Friday. Badged as the Slate 8, the third-generation Windows tablet seen by Neowin in preliminary rendered form would be much sleeker than previous generations. Study: One in four iPad customers are new to Apple
Remember the early generation iPods - they were so popular and it seemed like everyone, even non-Mac users, had one? A recent NPD report about the iPad suggests the tablet device is slowly replacing the iPod as the device that gets people into the Apple ecosystem. In its Apple Ecosystem Study, the NPD group says 25 percent of buyers in the US snagged the iPad as their first Apple device.
In its heyday, over 70 percent of Apple product owners purchased an iPod as their first Apple device. This number drops to 57 percent when you poll people who bought their first Apple device in the last two years. New iPad arrives in India, eight other countries today
Apple began selling the new iPad today in an additional nine countries, including India. The other countries include Colombia, Estonia, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa and Thailand. With today's rollout the new iPad is now available in 56 countries around the world -- the fastest iPad expansion to date.
However, as noted by CNET, the biggest country in today's launch, India, seems to have little excitement for the new tablet. Apple has no official retail presence in the country. USC develops printable liquid solar cells for flexible, low-cost panels
Solar cells are becoming more viable sources of energy -- and as they become more efficient, they're only getting smaller and cheaper to produce. Liquid nanocrystal cells are traditionally inefficient at converting sunlight into electricity, but by adding a synthetic ligand to help transmit currents, researchers at USC have improved their effectiveness. Apple may have held off Samsung for top smartphone spot
IHS iSuppli posted an estimate that suggested Apple may have kept its frontrunner position in smartphones in the earliest quarter of 2012. Although Samsung hasn't officially published smartphone shipments, researchers believed that it had shipped 32 million devices, putting it behind Apple's 35.1 million iPhones. If true, the gap would be wider than in the fall, when Samsung's reported 35 million to 36 million was close to Apple's 37 million.

New lawsuit targets Apple over Smart Cover design
A Colorado resident, Jerald Bovino, has filed a new lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company's Smart Cover infringes a 2005 patent. Bovino owns patent 6,977,809, which describes a "Portable Computer Case." One similarity between the patent concept and the Smart Cover is a series of visible "rib" lines.

Business-minded HP 'Slate 8' tablet surfaces in leaked image
This one is still very much unconfirmed, but a "trusted source" recently provided Neowin.net with the image you see above, which purports to be a mockup of a forthcoming business-minded tablet from HP dubbed the Slate 8. Foxconn Brazil workers reportedly threaten to strike
According to a report from TechGuru, workers in Foxconn's Brazil plant are threatening to strike. Factory workers in a Jundiai, Brazil plant cite overcrowded buses, poor quality food and lack of water as their primary complaints. The United Steelworkers of Jundiaí and Region said Foxconn has ten days to resolve all issues cited by the workers at a meeting held last Monday. The workers will meet again next week to gauge Foxconn's progress.

Kodak sees losses grow to $366m as reorg, lawsuits continue
Kodak saw mixed performance on Friday as it fought to get back to profitability. Although it now had a cash balance of $1.4 billion, up from $500 million in a pre-bankruptcy fall 2011, its losses widened from $246 million to $366 million. The deeper impact was pinned on restructuring costs as the company hoped to sell off money-losing divisions.

Nokia sees third credit rating cut in a row, S&P says junk
Nokia faced its third credit rating cut in a month on Friday in signs of a further confidence problem. Standard & Poor dropped Nokia's rating to junk status based on a shortfall in cash strength. Apple Q2 2012: 39,2 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz, 11,6 Milliarden Gewinn
Apples Quartalszahlen für das zweite Quartal übertreffen die des ersten nochmal: nachdem die iPhone-Verkäufe zuletzt zumindest in den USA stagnierten, hat Apple gestern Abend die neusten Zahlen veröffentlicht. Demnach konnte der Umsatz vom Vergleichszeitraum des letzten Jahres von 24,7 Milliarden Dollar auf 39,2 Milliarden Dollar vergrößert werden, der Gewinn wurde von sechs Milliarden Dollar auf 11,6 Milliarden Dollar nahezu verdoppelt. 35 Millionen iPhones und fast 12 Millionen iPads gingen laut CEO Tim Cook über die Ladentische, fast so viel wie im Weihnachtsquartal des letzten Jahres und im Vergleich mit dem Vorjahr 88 Prozent

Nachdem die legendären Urzeitkrebse, der Lügendetektor und die Fingerfalle fürs iPhone erschienen, hatte wohl keiner mehr an ein Yps-Comeback geglaubt. Heute hat Yps via Facebook bekanntgegeben, dass das Gimmick-Magazin am 11. Oktober wieder in den Druck geht. Von 1975 bis 2006 war das Kindermagazin mit draufgeklebten Plastik-Gadgets, Spionagetools und anderen Basteleien erschienen und hatte für Generationen den Einstieg in die Gadget- und DIY-Welt bedeutet. HackStore will Cydia für Mac OS X sein

Andrey Fedotovs HackStore macht zwar vollmundig auf Anti-Piracy, hat aber augenscheinlich im gleichen Atemzug kein Problem damit, sich großzügig am Layout des App Store zu bedienen. Das Ziel soll sein, all die legalen Mac Apps verfügbar zu machen, die es aus welchem Grund auch immer nicht in den App Store geschafft haben. Deswegen liegen Tools wie FileZilla, Gimp und andere schlicht als ".dmg" bereit und es lassen sich auch eigene Apps hochladen. Wie sicher der HackStore ist, weiss bisher allerdings niemand, deswegen: Ausprobieren nach dem Quelle-Link auf eigene Gefahr.

Video: Idioten installieren tödliche Mittelalter-Stolperfallen im Wald, werden auf Facebook verpfiffen

Ein ausgeprägter Basteltrieb ist mitnichten immer eine feine Sache: beispielsweise wenn zwei Idioten auf die Idee verfallen, neben einem vielgenutzten Wanderweg merkwürdige Unterstände aus Holz zu bauen und an diesen tödliche Stolperfallen in Mittelaltermachtart zu installieren. Genau das haben zwei Idioten im US-Bundesstaat Utah aber tatsächlich gemacht, bei einer Falle sollte das Opfer in angespitzte Stöcke stürzen, bei der zweiten ein mit Spitzen gespickter Stein auf seinen Kopf schwingen. Textercuffs fesseln den Daumen SMS-Süchtiger

Handy-fixierte Menschen können ganz schön nerven, vor allem wenn man selbst gerade sozial in Fahrt ist, aber die Aufmerksamkeit des Gegenübers eigentlich dem Display gilt. Der Instructables-Nutzer mit dem Nick rsmaudsley hat nun eine mechanische Zwangslösung für das Problem ausgetüftelt: die Textercuffs, eine Daumenfessel in Eigenbauweise, für die man nur einen Tennisball und konventionelle Handschellen benötigt. Aber auch wenn das Teil recht drollig ausschaut, kann es keine Lösung sein, weil sich psychische Suchtroutinen durch Fessel und Peitsche eben nicht in Wohlgefallen auflösen.

Lego-Tachikoma rollt und krabbelt durchs Gelände

Lego hat ja seit einer Weile eine Plattform für Produktvorschläge, wobei eine Kreation mehr als 10.000 Stimmen kriegen muss, um als Set realisiert zu werden. Der Lego-Fanatiker mit dem Nick mahj konnte für seinen "Motorized Tachikoma" bereits fast 3.000 Stimmen einsammeln und das zu recht: das ferngesteuerte Gefährt wurde von "Ghost in the Shell" inspiriert und es sieht nicht nur fein aus, sondern beherrscht auch die Antriebsarten Rollen und Krabbeln. Apple WWDC: 11.-15. Juni in San Francisco, nach zwei Stunden ausverkauft

Heute hat Apple die diesjährige WWDC in San Franciscos Moscone West offiziell gemacht, los geht´s am 11. und dauern soll sie bis zum 15. Juni. Der Fokus liegt auf der Entwicklung für OS X Mountain Lion und iOS, in über 100 Veranstaltungen, technischen Sessions und Hands-On Labs soll die Entwicklergemeinde mit Apple-Mitarbeitern zusammenarbeiten. Die Tickets waren allerdings schon zwei Stunden nach der Ankündigung ausverkauft, aber allerhöchstwahrscheinlich gibt es bei uns dann einen Liveblog.

Google Maps führt Foto-Touren zu mehr als 15.000 Orten auf der ganzen Welt ein. Die Fotoreihen setzen sich aus Picasa- und Panaromio-Bildern zusammen und sind so angeordnet, dass sich - mal mehr, mal weniger - ein räumliches Erlebnis einstellt. Wenn ihr auf den untenstehenden Quelle-Link klickt, gelangt ihr zu einer Karte, auf der sämtliche Touren verzeichnet sind. iPavement: Straßenbelag mit eingebautem WiFi und Bluetooth (Video)
Strassen und Bürgersteige ohne große Probleme mit WiFi und Bluetooth ausstatten, das will die spanische Firma iPavement mit ihrem gleichnamigen Strassenbelag ermöglichen. Neben dem normalen Netzzugang lassen sich mit den Platten, die über ein eigenes Betriebssystem verfügen, auch via eigener Apps Dienste anbieten. Unter anderem soll es eine virtuelle Bibliothek, einen Stadtplan mit Fahrplan und Notfalldienste geben. iPavement soll im Juli an den Start gehen.

PSA: Space Shuttle Enterprise flying over NYC this morning
JFK may be a place that many, many people have gone to before, but it's safe to say that the Space Shuttle Enterprise will be going there boldly. Much like the Space Shuttle Discovery turned heads in DC last week, Space Shuttle Enterprise will be stopping traffic in New York City today. NASA has confirmed that today's 747-100 ferry flight across Manhattan is a "Go" and that the duo will "fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Friday" before landing at JFK. We thought the 8K 85-inch Super Hi-Vision LCD we saw during CES was impressive, but Japanese broadcaster NHK is already looking to surpass that by going even bigger. Sharp to flip to small profit, spends $468m in mobile switch
Sharp in reporting its full-year results Friday both outlined a planned return to health and detailed the costs of a shift to mobile technology. It posted a steep loss equivalent to nearly $4.7 billion for its fiscal year, which ended with a $1.4 billion loss for its March quarter, but planned for its current fiscal year to get a slight profit of $248.2 million. Most of that would come from its partial change to mobile, as it expected TV sales to drop 19 percent even as the overall LCD business grew 29 percent.

Chips: Intel sieht Zusammenbruch des Modells externer Chip-Herstellung
Die Herstellung neuartiger Prozessoren und anderer Chips ist derart aufwendig, dass sich nur wenige Unternehmen eine eigene Produktionslinie leisten können. Eines davon ist Intel – das aufgrund jüngster Entwicklungen meint, dass das Geschäftsmodell anderer Chip-Designer, die herstellen lassen, nicht funktioniert.
Der Chip-Hersteller TSMC aus Taiwan hatte kürzlich angekündigt, nur einen statt wie zuvor geplant zwei 20-Nanometer-Produktionsprozess anzubieten. Der Intel-Manager Mark Bohr sieht das als Zeichen dafür, dass TSMC nicht über genügend technische Fähigkeiten oder Kapazitäten verfügt.

First image of Sony NEX-F3 leaked, outs 16.1 MP sensor
Leave it photography buffs to leak product shots that are decidedly unblurry, if poorly framed. Dpreview forum goer Bibogue outed a sneak peek at the Sony NEX-F3, a mirrorless shooter that seems to be poised to replace the NEX-C3. The leaked picture appears to reveal a 16.1 megapixel sensor, a built in flash and a 180-degree tilting screen, and Bibogue says the unit sports a new peaking level feature to help fine-tune manually focused shots. The new unit seems to retain its predecessor's proprietary accessory connector as well, so prospective buyers should choose their peripherals wisely.

LG's IPS monitors head downmarket with 2D-only IPS4 series launching soon
While LCD monitors with in-plane switching technology were once decidedly settled at the high end, LG apparently thinks its time for everyone to have one and is launching its mainstream IPS4 line. Estimate: Samsung ousts Nokia as world's top cellphone maker
Samsung has achieved a milestone in toppling Nokia for the crown of top cellphone maker, Strategy Analytics estimated in a new study. Using unofficial figures for Samsung as well as official data elsewhere, it had Samsung leading with 93.5 million cellphones sold, or 25.4 percent of the entire space. Nokia's rapid decline in smartphones saw it tumble from 108.5 million phones at the start of 2011 to 82.7 million a year later, or 22.5 percent.

Economist sees print dead in 25 years, Flipboard as rival
Most print publishing will be gone within the next 25 years, The Economist CEO Andrew Rashbass predicted in a presentation on Thursday. Paper magazines were at new highs, and his publication was hoping to keep demand hihg, but he told paidContent and others at Madrid's Paley Center international council that he was realistic about print going away. Softbank posts profits on iPhone sales, fends off rivals
The iPhone continues to be the key for growth and profits with cellphone carriers in Japan, as third-ranked provider Softbank Corporation posted a 65.4 percent increase in profits for its fiscal year, which ended in March. The company credited growing subscriber numbers and iPhone 4S demand as factors, despite the emergence of rival KDDI Corporation as an alternative provider of iPhones. The company had spent heavily on promotions to avoid having customers change to KDDI.

Samsung nets record $5.2b profit on smartphone sales
Samsung reported a best-ever first quarter profit equal to $5.2 billion on Thursday. The company singled out strong smartphone shipments as the core factor behind the 81 percent jump, both in established models as well as new "high-end strategic models" like the Galaxy Note. It wouldn't reveal shipments, but did say that shipments were higher in all areas, most of all in the developing world.

MacTech Conference - There's a developer track here, although MacTech's forte has always been IT. Samsung's Q1 2012 profits nearly double year-over-year on higher margins for TVs and phones
The numbers for Samsung's first quarter of 2012 are in and as it expected they are up sharply over the same period from 2011. After predicting profits of 5.8 trillion won it managed to top that, notching an operating profit of 5.85 trillion won ($5.16 billion US) for the quarter, a 98 percent gain over a year ago. Phones accounted for 73 percent of the profit, contributing 4.27 billion won to the bottom line. Brazilian Foxconn plant workers threaten strike
Workers at the Foxconn factory in Jundiai, Brazil may go on strike beginning May 3rd if the company does not resolve "severe" issues involving poor-quality food, water shortages and overcrowding of transportation vehicles, according to a statement from the workers' union. Foxconn has been given 10 days to resolve the issues, which came up at a meeting between some 2.500 workers and company officials on Monday, reports local paper Jornal de Jundiai.

In a possible glimpse into Apple's planning, TriQuint Semiconductor in Oregon (which has supplied chips for several versions of the iPhone) has warned investors that sales some of it older chips will fall at least 19 percent in the current quarter, but that the revenue drop was likely to be only temporary. Although CEO Ralph Quinsey did not specifically name Apple, it is well-known that the iPhone maker is TriQuint's largest single customer, reports The Oregonian.

Apple to build large, off-campus cafeteria
Yum. The San Jose Mercury News reports that Apple is building a cafeteria for employees. The new off-site eatery will be more than 21,000 square feet, and it's only for Apple folks.
The News quotes an Apple honcho as saying "We like to provide a level of security so that people and employees can feel comfortable talking about their business, their research and whatever project they're engineering without fear of competition sort of overhearing their conversations," Dan Whisenhunt, Apple's director of real estate facilities, said. "That is a real issue today in Cupertino because we've got other companies here in our same business."

FTC hires outside lawyer for Google antitrust case
The Federal Trade Commission in a media briefing said it was hiring an external lawyer for its antitrust investigation into Google. Beth Wilkinson, best known for securing the death penalty for domestic bomber Tim McVeigh, would start as of Monday, the Mercury News said in its account of the meeting. FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz stressed that the agency hadn't decided on whether it would formally accuse Google of being anti-competitive.

Some Iconia Tab A500s getting Ice Cream Sandwich early, Acer Ring is MIA
Last week, Acer announced that Ice Cream Sandwich would make its way to Iconia Tabs A100 and A500 in Canada and the US starting April 27th, but Phone Arena reports that some owners of the 10.1-inch A500 are getting the option to update a day ahead of schedule. If you're one of the lucky few to be in on the early upgrade, you should be ready to rock with Android 4.0.3 after a 30-minute install. The one potential downside to getting ICS ahead of time? You'll have to wait for the Acer Ring hub, which didn't make the cut for this update.

Another Apple executive heads to J.C. Penney
Another Apple employee has left for J.C. Penney. Benjamin Fay, who was Apple's senior director of retail real estate, design and development, will head up that department with J.C. Penney. Fay had led the design team responsible for upholding Apple's brand image at its retail stores.
Fay's new boss will be former Apple retail chief Ron Johnson. Both men were noted on the recent issue of a patent for the Shanghai Apple Store design. Last fall, it was reported that Johnson was looking to

Adobe updates Lightroom 4.1 beta, adds HDR, camera support
Adobe is in the final stages of testing the forthcoming Lightroom 4.1 update, offering Release Candidate 2 on its Adobe Labs website for free download. The self-expiring test release corrects issues reported from the first release candidate and initial 4.1 test release. The company took the opportunity to add further RAW file format support for some additional cameras, new controls to correct color fringing and support for HDR files.

Walmart's website lets you Pay With Cash, strips away the 'convenience' of shopping online
Here's an idea: order products online, and then pay using regular 'ol dollar bills. Intrigued? That's exactly what Walmart has begun offering on its website today with its new Pay With Cash service. It's no different from initiating a normal web order, save for being another -- and potentially convoluted -- option to hand over your funds and checkout. After selecting PWC, you'll receive an order confirmation, which then allots you 48 hours to print it out and present it your local Wally World. iFixit tears open an HP Z1, finds it impossibly easy to repair
Those guys and gals at iFixit love nothing more than destroying something beautiful and, in the process, finding out exactly what makes it tick. The latest victim of their reckless deconstructive tendencies is HP's Z1. The all-in-one turns out to be just as beautiful on the inside as it is outside.
