Sony woes continue as SOE confirms data breach
Are you starting to feel bad for Sony yet? No? Maybe this will change your mind. Sony Online Entertainment has, apparently, been the victim of another breach that has, according to Nikkei.com, resulted in the release of 12,700 credit card numbers -- and presumably some other information as well. 4,300 of those credit card numbers are said to be Japanese, but no saying how many are American. Thankfully, most cards are said to have expired in 2007, making us wonder if perhaps this wasn't some sort of backup that was exposed. Regardless, SOE's online services were taken offline earlier

AMD debuts first embedded GPU with support for OpenCL and six displays
Disappointed by the lack of support for multiple displays and OpenCL in embedded GPUs these days? Then AMD may have just made your day. It's just debuted its new "desktop level" Radeon E6760 discrete GPU, which packs both OpenCL support and Eyefinity-enhanced support for no less than six independent displays. AMD also notes that the GPU can be paired with its upcoming Llano APU for some additional graphics and parallel computing power and, while it might not wind up in many consumer devices, the company says it's ideal for everything from casino games to medical imaging. State Farm outs driving coach app for iPhone, iPod
Vehicle insurance company State Farm has just launched a Driver Feedback app (free, App Store) that turns iPhone and iPods into digital driving coaches. The point is to foster and encourage safe driving habits that decrease the likelihood of a crash. The iOS device's accelerometer is used to monitor acceleration, braking and cornering forces that are used to give drivers a score.

Hackers race to jailbreak iPad 2
Two prominent iOS hackers are currently racing to jailbreak the iPad 2, reports say. The first is Joshua Hill, also known as p0sixninja, and perhaps most recognized for his work on greenpois0n. Hill recently challenged other developers to dump the iPad 2's bootrom, and one of the people to accept so far is George Hotz, who uses the alias Geohot.

Cultured Code releases Things Cloud Sync beta
Of the many to-do apps available in the App Stores, one of the perennial favorites is Things from Cultured Code (US$9.99 for iPhone/iPod touch, $19.99 for iPad, $49.99 for Mac). While the cross-platform app has been lauded for its beautiful user interface and ease of use, there have been continuing complaints from users who want to be able to sync their To-Do tasks between devices. Other apps like Wunderlist (free) and OmniFocus have had cloud syncing for a while, and today Cultured Code has finally taken the wraps off of an implementation of cloud sync.

Peugeot EX1 sets new lap record for electric cars at Germany's Nürburgring circuit
Some concept cars may just be for show, but not Peugeot's all-electric EX1. It made its debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and has continued to be fine-tuned by the automaker ever since -- work that has now paid off in the form of a new lap record for electric vehicles at Germany's Nürburgring circuit. Despite "unfavorable" weather conditions, the car managed to post a lap time of 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds (with an average speed of 85.9 miles per hour), which handily beat the previous record of 9:51 set by a modified Mini E last year. Verizon to put location warning sticker on iPhones
Expect to peel off one more warning sticker when you buy an iPhone from Verizon Wireless. In a letter dated April 19, 2011, and addressed to U.S. congressmen Ed Markey and Joe Barton, Verizon detailed the processes it uses to protect customer privacy and revealed plans to begin adhering the warning sticker pictured here to any new device capable of tracking its owner's location.

iPhone TV remote maker Peel lands $16.7m, vows new platforms
Peel began its week by getting a large $16.7 million round of financing. Lima promises webstore for jailbroken iOS devices
A group called the Infini Dev Team is working on a webstore for users of jailbroken iOS devices, says MacStories. Called Lima, the store will let people find, download and install unofficial apps and themes. At present visitors will likely navigate to a dedicated homepage to log into a personal account. iOS 4.3.3 rumored to be coming within next two weeks with fix for location tracking issue
Apple promised last week that it would address the iPhone tracking issue in a software update in the "next few weeks," and BGR is now reporting that the update is coming within the next two weeks, or "possibly sooner." iOS 4.3.3: Fix für Geodaten-Speicherung bereit
BGR hat wieder, wie es zur Zeit mit jeder neuen Version von iOS der Fall ist, das kommende Update 4.3.3 von iOS samt Changelog erhalten, welches in wenigen Tagen den Endnutzer erreichen soll. White, black iPhones same thickness say Phil Schiller, Consumer Reports
A flurry of reports over the weekend claimed the White iPhone was just a bit thicker than the standard black model.

It just keeps getting harder for America's enemies to hide from the technological marvel that is the modern US military. I-O Data intros 3TB external drive with USB 3.0 support
I-O Data has quietly introduced an external hard drive, the HDCA-UT3.0K, with three terabytes of storage capacity. Apple is world's second-largest buyer of accelerometers, gyroscopes, microphones
The popularity of Apple's iOS devices propelled the manufacturer to the top of the consumer microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensors market. The millions of iOS devices in the wild are chock full of 3-axis gyroscopes, accelerometers, microphones, and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) duplexers. In 2010, Apple's purchase of these sensor components rose 116.7% year over year and climbed to a whopping US$195 million.

Consumer Reports disputes claims white iPhone 4 is thicker
Consumer Reports on Monday disputed claims that the white iPhone 4 was thicker than its black counterpart. Using calipers, the buying advice magazine claimed both color iPhones were about 0.37 inches. It went so far as to try three cases and said all three fit properly.

Apple now second-largest buyer of MEMS sensors, says iSuppli
Apple has become the second largest buyer of MEMS (microelectromechanical system) sensors in the world, claims research firm iSuppli. During 2010 the company bought approximately $195 million worth of MEMS sensors, a 116.7 percent increase over the $90 million spent in 2009. The new figure puts Apple ahead of Nintendo, which slipped 11.5 percent from 2009 to $123 million, and just $5 million shy of Samsung, which grew 46 percent to $200 million.

MacDefender malware targeting Mac users
Mac owners usually have little to worry about in terms of computer viruses and spyware, but a new malware attack seems to be causing issues for some users.
According to a report on The Next Web, a specialized malware attack targeting Mac users is making the rounds. iOS 4.3.3 to fix location tracking issue, due soon
A rumor out of BGR suggests iOS 4.3.3 will land in the upcoming weeks. As expected, the update will fix the location tracking issue that blew up last week. In this public debacle, Apple confirmed cell tower and WiFi hotspot information was being stored on the iPhone and 3G iPad to improve location fix acquisition.
Apple promised to address these issues and, according to BGR, the changelog for 4.3.3 will include the following improvements:

ING Direct's iOS app adds 'bump' money transfer feature for well-heeled posses
Look, violence doesn't solve everything, but ING Direct reckons a gentle fist bump can help fix financial quarrels between you and your buddies. Recently added to the bank's iOS app is a feature that makes use of Bump Technologies' API, with which a physical bump between two active devices instantly triggers a money transfer, thus saving the sender from having to put in account details. 'Course, this is only usable for transactions within ING for the time being, so you'll have to stick to other methods for some quick and dirty mobile payments to the outside world.

'MACDefender' malware targets Mac users via web links
A new piece of malware called MACDefender is currently targeting users of Mac OS X, says security firm Intego. The exploit begins with a person clicking on a link to a malicious site with special embedded JavaScript code. Studie: Tauschbörsen sind Hauptumschlagsplatz für Kinderpornografie
Laut der Studie "Herstellung und Verbreitung Kinderpornografie über das Internet" des Kriminalwissenschaftlichen Instituts der Leibniz Universität Hannover stellen kostenlose Tauschbörsen den größten Markt für kinderpornografisches Material dar. "Es ist nach derzeitigen Erkenntnissen nicht festzustellen, dass hier ein Markt besteht, auf dem eine Regulierung des Preises nach Angebot und Nachfrage stattfindet", erklärte Bernd-Dieter Meier, Direktor des Instituts. 66 Prozent der HD+-Kunden zahlen für hochauflösende Privatsender
Rund anderthalb Jahre nach dem Start von HD+ hat die für den Betrieb der Plattform des Satellitenbetreibers SES Astra zuständige HD Plus GmbH erstmals offizielle Zuschauer- und Kundenzahlen veröffentlicht. Demnach haben zwei Drittel der 172.000 Kunden, die zwischen dem 1. November 2009 und dem 31. März 2010 ein HD+-Empfangsgerät gekauft haben, nach Ablauf der einjährigen Gratistestphase ihren Vertrag für 50 Euro im Jahr verlängert. Ende März 2011 gab es somit 114.000 zahlende HD+-Kunden.

Eine gute kompetente Kundenberatung und ein Maßband tun es vielleicht auch. Aber beides ist in Modeläden der heutigen Zeit ja bekanntlich eher Mangelware. Dann greifen wir natürlich gerne zu High Tech wie diese "Revolution" im Kleiderkauf namens mybestfit. Wichtigster Bestandteil hierbei ist der Bodyscanner, der mit Funkwellen über 196 Antennen ein 3D-Modell des jeweiligen Kunden anfertigt, was in etwa 10-15 Sekunden dauert. Insgesamt werden dabei mehr als 200.000 Daten angelegt. Einmal gescannt kann dem Kunden nun die passende Kleidung im Laden am Bildschirm vorgestellt werden. Apple's promised short-term iOS security update is known as iOS 4.3.3, and should arrive in two weeks or less, a source with the company says. The person notes that as expected, it should reduce the size of the location cache, and prevent the file from being backed up to iTunes. So we finally got our dirty little hands on RIM's new BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone here at BlackBerry World 2011. It's basically the old Bold but with a capacitive touchscreen and updated innards including a 1.2 GHz CPU, 768 MB of RAM, a GPU , HSPA+, and NFC support. From a design perspective it mixes BlackBerry's traditional formula with iPhone 4-like materials (that familiar stainless steel rim). A small misstep by Apple in a MacBook Air image hints at the rumored iWork 11 suite. Located directly above the iPhoto image in the right sidebar is a reference to the rumored productivity suite. Rumors coming fast and furious last year pointed to a January launch of the iWork 11 applications along with the Mac App Store. While the OS X App Store debuted on time, the suite of applications which include Pages '11, Numbers '11 and Keynote '11 did not materialize. Nachdem die Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview veröffentlicht wurde, tauchen allmählich immer mehr Features der kommenden Rechner OS von Apple auf. Wie AppleiGuide herausgefunden hat, wird es eine integrierte Uninstall-Funktion geben, die der aus iOS sehr ähnlich ist. Der Lion Uninstaller läuft über Launchpad. Hält man die Maustaste über eine Weile auf dem Icon, beginnt wie bei IOS das Icon an zu wackeln und ein Kontextmenü fragt, wie man weiter damit verfahren will. Google has managed to oust traditional businesses to claim the top reputation among US companies, Harris said Monday. The search giant and Android maker pushed Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway down to fourth place. Samsung Sliding PC 7 Series now available for $649 Amazon pre-order
Samsung has yet to announce a revised release date for its Sliding PC 7 Series tablet / laptop hybrid, but the 2.2-pound netvertible slider is already available for pre-order on Amazon. Wikileaks-Dokumente: USA setzten Kanada wegen Urheberrechtsschutz unter Druck
Die von Wikileaks veröffentlichten Depeschen der US-Botschaften zeigen laut einem Bericht von Ars Technica und dem Blog des kanadischen Datenschützers Michael Geist, wie die USA in Sachen Urheberrecht Druck auf die kanadische Regierung ausgeübt hat. Da der Druck nicht den gewünschten Erfolg zeigte, kam das Nachbarland 2008 sogar auf die Special 301 Priority Watch List: eine Liste von Ländern mit aus amerikanischer Sicht besonders schlechtem Urheberrechtsschutz. Dort befindet sich Kanada unter anderem in Gesellschaft von Russland und China.

Crescent Moon Games is the developer behind popular iOS titles like Aralon and Ravensword, and it's returned to the platform recently with a new game called Gears. This is a sphere rolling game in the vein of the old Marble Madness, though as you can see from the screenshot above, we've come a long way since that first isometric title. In Gears, you use a finger (or the tilt controls, though those don't work quite as precisely) to roll a ball around on your iPhone or iPad, guiding it through a series of obstacles of different types. As you might expect, gameplay's simple to pick up, but complexity gets added in later on with more mechanics and tougher levels.

ITC judge sides with Apple in Elan multitouch patent dispute
It's not over just yet, but Apple has now scored a significant victory in its longstanding dispute with Elan Microelectronics. As those with a long memory for patent-related matters may recall, Elan had claimed that Apple infringed on two of its multitouch-related patents in its various iOS devices, and it asked the ITC to impose an outright ban on the sale of those devices until the matter was settled. Dish Network will pay TiVo $500 million to settle DVR lawsuit
Dish Network and TiVo have come to a settlement on their long running patent dispute that will see the satellite company pay $500 million to settle all ongoing litigation. We stopped covering the various court judgements in this case last year as each side continued to file one stay and injunction after another, but this time it's finally over. According to the press release, the two companies have licensed certain patents to each other, including the infamous Time Warp patent that was at the heart of the dispute. Details are in the press release after the break, but TiVo's scored an upfront $300 million cash payment, with the remaining $200 million to be paid out between 2012 and 2017.

A few days ago I highlighted a new flexible and water-resistant Bluetooth keyboard from the folks at Scosche. As many of the people commenting on that post noted, flexible "chiclet-type" keyboards of this type have a reputation for being difficult to type on. Nach dem Incredible S hat uns HTC heute noch das Desire S zum testen geschickt. Das Smartphone kommt mit einem 3,7"-Display und hat ansonsten die gleichen Specs wie das minimal größere Incredible S. If you haven't heard of Dr. Amar Bose directly, you've surely heard of his eponymous audio equipment company. Late last week, the 81-year old founder and chairman of Bose Corporation announced that he's donating the majority of shares in the privately held company to his alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. New features of Mac OS X Lion are slowly leaking out after the last Lion Developer Preview was released. The latest find, noticed by AppleiGuide.co.uk, is a built-in uninstaller function, reminiscent of the way you remove apps in iOS.
The Lion app uninstaller works through Launchpad, Mac OS X's app launcher "home screen" layer. IDC: Smartphones bescheren Handymarkt 20 Prozent Wachstum
Laut IDC wurden im ersten Quartal 2011 weltweit 371,8 Millionen Mobiltelefone verkauft. Das entspricht einem Anstieg von 19,8 Prozent gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs. Das Wachstum begründen die Marktforscher mit einer großen Nachfrage nach Smartphones. Samsungs Gewinn bricht um 30 Prozent ein
Samsungs Nettogewinn ist im ersten Quartal wie erwartet um 30 Prozent zurückgegangen. Den am Freitag vorgelegten Geschäftszahlen zufolge erwirtschaftete der koreanische Elektronikkonzern zwischen Januar und März einen Überschuss von 2,78 Billionen Won (1,75 Milliarden Euro). Im Vorjahreszeitraum waren es noch 3,99 Billionen Won. Der Umsatz erhöhte sich um 7 Prozent auf 36,99 Billionen Won (23,3 Milliarden Euro). Hinweise auf MobileMe-Nachfolger in neuer Lion-Preview
Vergangenes Wochenende gab Apple die Developer Preview 3 von Mac OS X 10.7 Lion für Entwickler zum Download frei. Wie üblich verstecken sich darin auch einige sichtbare Neuerungen. Die auffälligste Detailänderung an der Lion-Optik der Developer Preview 3 stellen neue Slider dar. Slider werden benötigt, um innerhalb eines Fensters zwischen unterschiedlichen Inhalten zu wechseln, beispielsweise in den Systemeinstellungen von «Schreibtisch» zu «Bildschirmschoner». Diese Slider kamen in den bisherigen Vorabversionen von OS X Lion im iOS-Look daher, was für einige Kritik unter den Testern gesorgt hatte. White iPhone 4 teardown shows real camera, sensor changes
A teardown of the white iPhone 4 caught this weekend has shown that the white iPhone 4 has been changed on the inside to accommodate the new color. As spotted by MacOtakara, Japan's Smartphone Doctor found that the camera sensor is noticeably more deeply recessed than on the black version. HP's Veer gets AT&T logo, two-tone exterior
We suspected HP's diminutive webOS 2.2 smartphone might be on its way to AT&T, and now a handful of leaked photographs rocking a panda-like color scheme have further confirmed our suspicions. As you can see from the image above, the little guy's working the carrier's logo in the upper left-hand corner of its 2.6-inch display. The photos of HP's smallest webOS smartphone first appeared over at Pocketnow on Friday, just days before the Veer's May 2nd launch party is scheduled to pop off in Los Angeles. iOS 5 testing going back to iPhone 3GS, 3rd-gen iPod touch
Further anecdotes of iOS 5.0 device testing have suggested Apple is once again going back about two years for device support. While it was already known to be going back to last year's hardware, 9to5 has seen instances of the iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch. The crash longs generating the reports wouldn't guarantee support but suggested that iOS 5 was at least being designed with 2009-era hardware as a factor.

Motorola promises more Atrix-like laptop docks for future phones
Motorola's Atrix 4G laptop dock was a seriously sweet concept, which is why we were so disappointed when it failed to pan out. Sounds like Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha is ready to give it another try, though -- on the company's earnings results call this past week, he told investors that Moto is planning a whole series of Lapdock devices in the second half of the year:

South Park makes fun of all things Apple in season opening
South Park has aired the opening episode of its fifteenth season, and it blasted not only Apple's products, but the culture surrounding the company as well. We knew this was coming, based on a Steve Jobs parody keynote promo shown leading up to the premiere.
Some of the best bits were the Genius Bar segment (see below -- sorry, Flash required) and the part were Eric's mom tries to get him to buy a Toshiba HandyBook instead of an iPad. I'll let the episode speak for itself though. You can watch the full thing here. Be warned, however -- as usual, South Park is very NSFW.
