Vudu steps up heat on Apple with first TV shows
Vudu chose Tuesday to throw itself into more direct competition with iTunes and Netflix by carrying TV shows. The deal gives it access to shows from ABC, AMC, Fox, HDNet, Palm, Showtime, Sony, Starz, and The CW, such as Weeds and The Walking Dead. As a paid service, its episodes will show a day after the air date rather than weeks or months like on Netflix.

Fresh Apple job posting points to new iOS Maps app
Apple is now explicitly hunting for someone to improve the Maps app in iOS, a new job listing reveals. The successful candidate will take on the mantle of "iOS Maps Application Developer," working in or around the vicinity of the company's Cupertino headquarters. Applicants must have "real-world experience developing sophisticated user interfaces," and cooperate with the Apple human interface team to "add new and innovative features."

Designer pitches concept for usable iOS notifications in video
Like many of us here in the TUAW compound, designer Andreas Hellqvist is dissatisfied with the intrusive and often downright annoying notifications system iOS 4 offers today. Like me, he expresses his distaste for iOS's notifications by turning them off in almost every app on his device. After exploring other concepts on the web and finding most didn't adhere to existing iOS concepts, the Swedish designer took it upon himself to illustrate his own vision of what iOS notifications should be.

Singapore joins countries halting online iPad 2 orders
iPad 2 sales have come to a halt at Apple's Singapore online store, checks show. All models, whether Wi-Fi or 3G, are now listed as "currently unavailable." There is no indication of when sales will resume, although it should still be possible to buy iPads through local retail vendors. No physical Apple Stores exist in the city.

Analyst expects OmniVision still locked for iPhone 5 camera
Lazard Capital Markets analyst Daniel Amir on Tuesday told investors that he didn't expect Apple to turn to Sony for iPhone cameras. He still believed OmniVision, the long-time camera sensor maker for Apple, had a "significant" opportunity with its Apple deal. The firm was unique in scaling from the very low end to advanced cameras and still had one of the best backside-illuminated camera sensors in its BSI-2-based chips.

EA buys out Real Racing developer Firemint
Game publisher Electronic Arts says it has acquired Firemint, the developer of titles like Flight Control and Real Racing. Firemint dates back to 1999, and currently employs about 60 people. The terms of the deal have yet to be announced, even though the acquisition process is expected to wrap up in four weeks.

Colorware starts customizing iPad 2
Colorware has began offering custom painted iPad 2s, with a configurator now available on the company's website. The rear body can be painted, as well as the Apple logo on the rear and the home button on the front, all independently of each other. There are 21 solid color options, the same amount of metallic hues and four pearl shades to choose from. Either gloss, original or SofTouch finishes are available, with the last adding $10 to the price tag.

DOJ launching deep probe of AT&T buyout of T-Mobile
An insider said Tuesday that the US Department of Justice had decided to launch a deep investigation of AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile. Officials reportedly decided against an "early termination," or a fast-track approval within a month, in favor of a longer investigation that could take months. The Reuters tip was short on details, such as the main direction of the investigation or whether there were any major doubts.

Nachdem wir bereits vor einigen Tagen über das kommende Feature „Reading List“ in Safari berichten konnten, kommt heute die nächste Neuerung: Anscheinend wird man auf Mac OS X Lion einen Button in der Toolbar von Safari finden können, der ein Popup mit allen Downloads aufbringt. Läufen ein oder mehrere Downloads, so sieht man auf diesem Button eine grobe Übersicht über den gemeinsamen Fortschritt aller aktiven Downloads, ähnlich der, die man sieht, wenn man eine App auf dem iPhone oder iPad aus dem mobilen App Store installiert oder aktualisiert.Dieses Feature scheint auf den ersten Blick nicht allzu besonders zu sein, aber zum einen erspart es Nutzern die Tastenkombination, zum anderen gibt es einen Überblick über Downloads ohne weiteren Platz auf dem Bildschirm aufzubrauchen. NEX-C3 instruction manual appears on Sony's Czech site, quickly removed
Sony is still staying mum on any official details for the NEX-C3, but the camera's instruction manual has now made a brief appearance on the company's Czech Republic site, offering yet more evidence that the successor to the NEX-3 is set for an imminent launch. Apple stellt neue iMacs vor
Wie bereits mehrmals in den letzten Wochen spekuliert hat Apple heute nach guten 3 Stunden, in denen der Online-Store nicht erreichbar war, die neuen iMacs vorgestellt. Das Design wurde nicht verändert, dafür kamen reichlich Features. Als erstes wurde natürlich die Thunderbolt-Technologie verbaut, welche im 21,5-Zoll-Modell mit einem und im 27-Zoll-Modell mit zwei Anschlüssen kommt. Thunderbolt soll Übertragungsgeschwindigkeiten bis zu zwanzig Mal schneller als mit USB-Alternativen bei zum Beispiel externen Festplatten bringen. Auch kann man darüber sowohl Displays anschließen, zum Beispiel Apples Cinema Display, als auch den iMac als Display für zum Beispiel die neuen MacBook Pros nutzen.

If you think schlepping a tripod along with your DSLR isn't worth it because you're convinced you can get a clean shot if you just concentrate hard enough, we have to ask how's that working out for ya? To demonstrate the destructive power of shaky hands, Camera Technica attached a laser to the hotshoe of a Canon 7D, with the light reflecting off a wall 20 feet away. The lesson: it's challenging enough to get a crisp shot with a tripod -- let alone without. NVIDIA settlement forcing Windows replacements on Mac buyers
A determination (PDF) by the court in the wake of NVIDIA's class-action settlement has left Mac users and many others angered at unfair treatment. Judge James Ware declared "without merit" objections from those who were told the only replacement option was an entry-level Compaq CQ-56 notebook. The sub-$500 notebook "meets or exceeds nearly all of the specifications" of the systems whose graphics failed, Judge Ware claimed, further believing that any missing components could be added in.

Nielsen estimates show first drop in TV ownership in 20 years, Mayans nod approvingly
The Nielsen Company has announced that its estimated number of TV households for 2012 is dropping to 114.7 million (96.7 percent), down from 115.9 million (98.9 percent) the year before which is the first time it's gone down in two decades. Comparing the old iMacs with today's new models
Earlier today, Apple updated the iMac line with Thunderbolt, quad-core processors across the line and a HD camera for FaceTime. Prices start at US$1,199 for the 21.5", 2.5 GHz model and climb to $1,999 for the big daddy. How do the specs compare to the previous models? Here are some of the highlights.

Apple bars app reviews tied to promo code downloads
Apple is no longer permitting iOS app reviews by people downloading with developer promo codes, representatives for the company say. App developers are regularly assigned a limited number of codes to share with media outlets or anyone else the developer feels necessary. The problem, says Apple, is that some developers are "compromising" the App Store rating system through various schemes.

Apple has reportedly made a change in its App Store app review policies preventing reviews or ratings of applications downloaded using promotional codes. Mac Rumors reports that the change has been made to “prevent comprimising [sic] of the rating system,” presumably by developers providing promo codes in exchange for positive reviews and high ratings of their applications. Appigo just beat Things to cloud sync with latest Todo for Mac
I've been a Todo user since the iPhone app, then bought the iPad version, but I never tried their online service since Todo ties in nicely with my cloud todo service of choice, Toodledo.
That may change now that Todo for Mac has been announced for the Mac App Store and features cloud sync with the Todo Online service. Previously you had to use Appigo's sync client on your Mac to sync your iOS apps, or use a 3rd party service like Toodledo.

EA buys Firemint, makers of Flight Control and Real Racing
Here's yet another big iOS developer picked up by a traditional gaming giant: EA has acquired Firemint, the maker of iOS hits Flight Control and the Real Racing series. This is a pretty big purchase, but not a big surprise: Firemint has done work for EA in the past, including a few ports of popular EA titles, and as it has just merged with Infinite Interactive and has a big new title on the way called Agent Squeek, Firemint seemed primed for a connection with a larger company.

TV ownership drops for first time in 20 years
The number of TV owners in the US has dropped for the first time in two decades, Nielsen discovered in a study posted Tuesday. Although slight, ownership dropped from 98.9 percent in the last study to 96.7 percent in early 2011. Results had first shown signs of change in 2008 but hadn't become as clear until this year, said the researchers.

Apple posts Boot Camp 3.2 update for 2011 iMacs
Apple has posted a new version of Boot Camp, its software allowing Windows partitions to run on a Mac. The v3.2 update -- measuring just 638KB -- is a minor one, only resolving problems with Japanese and South Korean keyboards when operating on a 2011 iMac. Windows 8 app store plans uncovered in code
Previously challenged rumors of a Windows 8 app store were proven to be real on Tuesday after a code check found numerous references. Like the Mac App Store it would be cloning, the shop would have ratings, reviews, and developer feedback, Windows8Italia found. Microsoft's emphasis on having a single download on Windows Phone 7 and Xbox would carry over and make it more unique, letting users get the trial version of an app and unlocking it rather than forcing a second download.

For those of us who use the TripIt service and app to keep track of our upcoming travel plans, the lack of an iPad version of the app was somewhat annoying. You could always load the iPhone app onto your iPad and use the 2X button to expand the size, but it just didn't look or feel right. Korean carriers suspend iPad 2 online sales
Korean mobile carriers SK Telecom and KT Corp have suspended online sales of the iPad 2 only a week after the product was launched. According to a report this morning, tight supplies of the tablet were responsible for the suspension.
Reuters noted that the SK Telecom website is showing an apologetic message stating that "our iPad 2 inventory has been depleted and we apologize for failing to provide enough supplies due to the product's global supply shortages."

Analyst: Apple claiming half of smartphone industry profits
Apple claimed half of the operating profits of the eight largest cellphone manufacturers during the March quarter, says Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley. Unofficial estimate has 674,000 actual Windows Phone 7 sales
Microsoft may have moved just 674,000 Windows Phone 7 devices in its first few months on sale, well-known Russian phone leaker Eldar Murtazin said in a new estimate. While the company said it had shipped 1.5 million to partners, its figures for late 2010 would have netted less than half that amount. The situation is believed to have been exacerbated in early 2011 and in April, Murtazin said.

Seagate intros first 3TB drive with 1TB per platter
Seagate on Tuesday brought out a world-first hard drive for storage density. The 3.5-inch drive breaks the 1TB per platter barrier and will first be available in the company's GoFlex Desk external drives. The drive has an areal density of 625 gigabits (78.13GB) per square inch, which is the highest in the industry.

Stolen Camera Finder is a site that promises to find missing cameras, as long as they've been stolen by cooperative criminals. All you have to do is drag and drop a JPG photo taken with your lost camera, and Stolen Camera Finder will hunt for any matches on the web, using the image's EXIF data. iPhone, iPad demand poses drain on digital camera suppliers
Intense demand for iPhones and iPads could affect the results of several major digital camera suppliers, say sources described by DigiTimes as with "upstream players." In particular the report suggests that companies like Altek, Foxconn, Ability Enterprise and Asia Optical may see shipments fall lower than forecast for the current quarter because of a shortage of small-sized panels, triggered by Apple. Target Display Mode missing in action on new iMacs
Cast your minds back to the launch of the 27" iMac in mid-2009. One of the new features was Target Display Mode, which introduced the ability to use the iMac as a pure external monitor, bypassing the built-in computer entirely. This could be useful if you wanted to dock a laptop to a big screen temporarily -- or if you were worried that the substantial investment in a 27" screen would, in years to come, be hobbled by the ageing CPU and GPU inside the iMac. Apps downloaded with a promo code can't be reviewed anymore
Last month, Apple began tweaking its App Store to more accurately rank applications based on criteria besides the number of downloads. Presumably, this new rating system takes into account both app reviews and ratings from customers. To tighten up the reviews and keep them honest, Apple has reportedly implemented a new policy that prohibits people from leaving a review when they obtained the application using a developer promo code.

Fluid for Mac gets updated to 1.0, offers paid version
Fluid, the neat little application that turns websites into standalone native Mac apps, has finally grown up into version 1.0 after three and a half years of development.
The application allows you to move frequently updating pages like Gmail or Facebook out of your browser tabs and onto your Dock where you can more clearly see 'unread' or 'New mail' notifications. It can also help with browser tab clutter (while at the same time adding to the clutter on your Dock).
As before, the app is free, but there's now a US$4.99 optional license that unlocks a few neat extras: the ability to create apps with separate cookie storage, pin Fluid apps to the Status Bar and use Userscripts or Userstyles in Fluid apps.

Apple updates iMac with Thunderbolt, beefier GPUs
Apple has refreshed its iMac all-in-one desktop line with upgraded CPUs and a few other new features. The key upgrades for the iMac refresh are the new quad-core Sandy Bridge processors and the Thunderbolt I/O port first introduced in the most recent MacBook Pro updates. Offering speeds of up to 10 Gbps, Thunderbolt provides a far faster connection than either USB 3.0 or Firewire. The iMac has also seen an upgrade to its GPUs, which are now three times faster than the previous model.

Apple validated some expectations early Tuesday morning by taking down the online Apple Store. It might look like a poor man's game of Pong now, but a new laser steering system coming out of North Carolina State University could make blowing things up Star Wars-style cheaper and more efficient. The setup enlists a series of "polarization gratings" through which a laser beam passes. Das Südkoreanische Unternehmen LG führt mit dem 14-Zoll großen P430 und dem 15,6-Zoll großen P530 seine neue Laptopreihe Blade ("Klinge") ein. Der Name kommt nicht von ungefähr, denn die beiden Modelle wurden einer radikalen Schlankheitskur unterzogen, so dass ihre Displays nur noch 4,5 mm und 4,7 mm dick sind. Ikea scheint es ernst zu meinen mit dem Solarleuchtmittelsegment, jedenfalls hat der Konzern die Lampenserie Solvinden seit Jahresbeginn auf eine beachtliche Größe gepimpt: von der Solarlichterkette über den Solarschlauch und die Solarstehleuchte bis zur Solarhängeleuchte ist schon alles am Start. Browserstatistik: IE9 überholt Opera
Der Marktanteil des Internet Explorer 9 ist im April auf 2,41 Prozent angestiegen, 1,41 Prozentpunkte mehr als im Vormonat. Google Chrome Canary browser now available for Mac
Google's Chrome Canary, a "pre-developer" version of the Chrome browser intended to be tested by "the bravest" of users -- people who would be comfortable with bugs and instability -- now has a Mac version available, according to the company's Chromium blog. The release follows the initial version of Canary for Windows last year, which the company says helped further development and gather feedback on Chromium and Chrome. LG's P430 and P530 Blade laptops set out to conquer the world with slim bezels, aluminum bodies, and Core i7
We heard of a bezel-hating LG Shuriken display sneaking its way onto Acer laptops recently, but the Korean company has wisely opted to debut that cutting-edge technology in its own portable computers first. Supply chain issues limit ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer production to 10,000 a month?
So, it seems that ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer has been hard to find, at least in part due to reasons other than customer demand. According to Netbook News, the Taiwanese company is having trouble sourcing the supplies needed to build the tablet / keyboard combo in sufficient numbers. For now, that means only 10,000 Transformers a month -- a fraction of the 300,000 ASUS was reportedly hoping to make. Peel iOS remote raises $16 million in funding
We've posted about the Peel universal IR remote before. It's an interesting setup using a third-party unit that looks almost like a pear, designed to fit right into your living room wirelessly. It connects to an iOS app and turns your iDevice into a universal remote for any other units you might happen to have. In addition to the slick design, there's a nice bit of TV browsing functionality included. It's a remote designed not only to help you control your TV, but also give you an idea of what you actually want to do with it.

Amazon tablet made by Quanta, due second half of 2011
The rumored Amazon tablet is being made by contract manufacturer Quanta and should be available by the end of the year, part suppliers said Monday night. It would make as many as 700,000 to 800,000 of the tablets a month and could ship them as soon as the second half of the year. Digitimes was told Amazon would have a unique tie-in with its usual e-paper supplier: although E Ink would supply some display components, it would be giving just the fringe field switching technology used in LCDs and a touchscreen layer.

Lion exploration reveals new downloading window, uninstaller
Various sites combing over the pre-release developer versions of Lion have made two further discoveries of changes to OS X, both influenced by Apple's other operating system, iOS. A more thorough uninstalling option appears when users click-and-hold on an application in Launchpad, making it "wiggle" and offering the chance to uninstall. In addition, Safari in Lion sports a new icons that appears to the right of the search bar with a visual progress indication of downloads.

MLB introduces mobile-phone-only subscription
Major League Baseball has switched up the pricing on its streaming MLB.tv service, and while most of the changes lately have been sending prices upwards (the iOS apps went up in price again this year), these changes are somewhat of a discount. The premium and regular packages have dropped in price by $10 each (which isn't really that big a deal, especially since we're a month into the season already). But more importantly, MLB is now offering a "smartphone-only" streaming service, allowing you to watch live baseball games on your iDevice or other approved smartphones for only $49.99 a year.

Working Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 spotted, handled in Germany (video)
We had a chance to peek at a glass-protected dummy version of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 8.9 at CTIA, but the real thing popped up at an event in Germany over the weekend, in all its svelte gadget glory. Our friend Johannes went hands-on with the tablet in Frankfurt, and liked what he saw. The version he saw was noticeably thinner than the prototype 8.9-incher that we got to smudge up in March (it's even slimmer than the iPad 2), and if this Europe appearance is any indication, Sammy may be on track to launch these sometime this summer, as promised. RIM: no Flash, Android for BlackBerry 7
RIM in conversations Monday night revealed that had no plans to support some of the features in BlackBerry 7 that it did in the BlackBerry PlayBook. The company no longer planned to support Flash on the current BlackBerry platform and would wait until the phones were sharing the same QNX-based roots as the PlayBook tablet. BB7 phones like the Bold 9900 also wouldn't qualify to run the OS and would need at least a dual-core replacement, handheld software manager Andrew Bocking told PCMag.

Kinect plus iPhone used to create gaming prototype
Rockmoon is a developer in Singapore that built this rig above -- it's an iPhone hooked up to Microsoft's Kinect motion controller, used to work with a game prototype similar to the old Sewer Shark Sega CD title. Basically, it's a two player affair, with one player using the Kinect to actually steer the in-game vehicle, and another using the iPhone to control the onboard guns.
As you can see in the YouTube video after the break, it all works quite well, though obviously given all of the various forces at play here, there's likely no way this can be a viable commercial solution. Report: 68% of Mac users running Snow Leopard
As GigaOm points out, a new report from Net Applications shows that 68% of Mac users are running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Mac OS X 10.5 is a distant second at 24%, while Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger holds just 6% of the Mac market. The remaining 2% is made up of Macs running Mac OS X 10.3 or below. For those of you keeping track, the highest ever adoption of a Mac OS was 10.5 Leopard, which reached a 71% Mac market share in July 2009, a month before Snow Leopard shipped.

AAPL shares survive rebalancing on Nasdaq today
Last month the stock index Nasdaq announced that it would be rebalancing the weighting of AAPL shares to better reflect the actual number of shares floating on the market. At the time, AAPL accounted for 20.5% of the Nasdaq. After the rebalancing today, AAPL now accounts only for 12.5% of the Nasdaq.

Twitter said certain to buy TweetDeck for at least $40m
Rumors that Twitter would buy TweetDeck firmed up on Monday night after a source said the deal was now settled. The terms reportedly had the app developer being sold for at least $40 million and as much as the $50 million reported earlier. In talking to TechCrunch, the source claimed that it would be formally unveiled within the next few days.

Samsung takes 200K Galaxy S II pre-orders, passes iPhone 4
Samsung claimed an at least initial win for the Galaxy S II. The company took over 200,000 pre-orders across all three major Korean carriers between Monday of last week and the launch on Friday. About 160,000 of those were at the country's largest carrier, SK Telecom.

Foxconn lists requirements for making iPads in Brazil
Last month we reported that Foxconn was in ongoing talks to invest US$12 billion in building manufacturing facilities in Brazil that would be used for the production of iPads and iPhones. The Brazilian president said the the deal was under consideration, but it appears that nothing is set in stone yet. This weekend Brazilian paper Folha de São Paulo said that Foxconn has issued a list of requirements the Brazilian government would have to agree to before they commit to opining the new facility. New downloads window coming to Safari in Lion
A few days ago it was discovered that Apple is building in a new feature to Safari called Reading List. The feature works like Instapaper and allows users to save web pages for later viewing. Now Italian Mac site Melamorsicata.it has discovered another tweak set for Safari v. 5.1 in Lion -- a revision of the downloads window.

At just $0.99 in the US App Store, Zarik HD provides a great little software title for puzzle lovers. The concept couldn't be easier: you move dice into square outlines, each turn removing a pip from the front face.
The devil is, however, in the details. You have to get each die into a square using exactly the right number of moves. How you do so can take seconds, minutes, or hours to figure out. You won't win if your die is in the right place but with pips remaining.
