Tachyon launches OPS and OPS HD helmet cameras, not as durable but way more tiny
We can't say we've ever been particularly impressed by the video quality delivered by the Tachyon line of helmet cameras, but they're a good choice for those who need a recorder that can take one heck of a beating -- if you don't mind some extra bulk. That fat has been banished in the new, slimmer OPS line which will be available in two flavors: a $90 VGA base unit and a slightly higher-end HD (720p) one for $140. Screen Grabs: Kyocera Echo goes back to the alternate-reality future in Fringe
We liked the Kyocera Echo quite a bit, but perhaps the dual-screen tabletphone concept is a mite ahead of its time -- here it is fifteen years from now, helping the Fringe team pull up security blueprints for an opera house. Or perhaps Astrid has become a vintage technology connoisseur? We have to admit it's a step up from the Streak seismograph, but we can't help but frown -- we wouldn't be caught dead running Froyo in the year 2026, after all.

US Cellular announces 4G, plans to light up LTE by end of year
Just when we're finally basking in the warmth of spring and picking May flowers, US Cellular finds a reason for us to look forward to the cold and dark winter to come. The carrier announced plans to deploy its own LTE network, intent on blanketing two dozen markets (representing 25 percent of its customer base) with blazing-fast 4G service in time for the holiday season. And the party ain't stopping just because the mistletoe comes down and the decorations are put away; the holiday deployment will only be the first phase, with US Cellular continuing its 4G expansion efforts through 2012. Juicies: A colorful Kickstarter project with the Earth in mind
Kickstarter has been a wonderful way for entrepreneurs to get the money they need to fund a project, and we've seen our share of successful -- that is, fully funded -- projects here at TUAW as well as some that have been flops.
A few weeks ago on Earth Day, we received notice of a rather plain product with a different twist. Microsoft patent details a 3D desktop interface with a room for your windows
Many have tried and failed to bring a 3D desktop interface to an otherwise 2D operating system, but that certainly hasn't stopped others from trying. The latest example to crop up comes courtesy of none other than Microsoft, which recently received a patent for what it describes as a "method and apparatus for providing a three-dimensional task gallery computer interface." BeBook Live tablet delivers the goods for Froyo diehards

Conde Nast rethinks its iPad strategy
A few weeks ago, after Conde Nast announced the company was slowing the process of bring magazines to the iPad due to the ability to deliver the scale advertisers want (ie: iPad magazine sales suck), I wrote that sales of magazines on the iPad wouldn't get better until publishers woke up and realized that not many readers are going to pay $5 to read a single issue of a magazine on the iPad.
Many readers agreed with me and, as of today, it appears that Conde Nast does too.

DX11- und AA-Patch für Shogun 2 am Montag

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 kostet bei Amazon 1292 Pfund, Auslieferung am 20.Mai

Die Leaks haben schon einiges über das Lenovo ThinkPad X1 verraten. So gab es vor zwei Wochen bereits eine Angabe zum Preis, als das Gerät in einem Schweizer Onlineshop für 2585 Schweizer Franken (etwa 2052 Euro) gesichtet wurde. Als Beginn der Auslieferung wurde damals der 20. Mai angegeben, ein Datum, das nun eine Auflistung beim britischen Amazon bestätigt. Der Preis für das 13,3-Zoll große Laptop mit 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M CPU, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, hintergrundbeleuchteter Tastatur und versprochenen acht Stunden Akkulaufzeit liegt dort bei 1292,52 Pfund, das sind umgerechnet ca.1477 Euro.

Archetype goes free with Archetype Cadet
Archetype is a solid first-person shooter for the iPhone that didn't really get a fair shake when it came out. It was popular enough, but the US$2.99 purchase price probably kept a few more people away than should have played it. Wir kennen zwar bereits einige Bilder des ThinkPad X1, aber die chinesische Webseite Mydrivers.com hat das Laptop von Lenovo nun zum ersten Mal in freier Wildbahn erwischt. WIe man oben und auf weiteren Fotos hinter dem Quelle-Link gut erkennen kann, ist das ThinkPad X1 tatsächlich sehr dünn - angeblich sind es nur 21,5 mm - dennoch hat Lenovo Platz für eine hintergrundbeleuchtete Tastatur geschaffen (Bild nach dem Break). Australierin wegen SIM-Card-Diebstahls zu Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt
Eine 33-jährige Australierin ist jetzt von einem australischen Gericht zu 18 Monaten Gefängnis verurteilt worden, weil sie die SIM-Karte (Subscriber Identity Module) aus einem Stromzähler entfernt und damit für über 190.000 US-Dollar (131.000 Euro) Gebühren verursacht hatte. Von der Haftstrafe wird sie vermutlich nur sechs Monate absitzen müssen. Dafür darf sie sich drei Jahre nach dem Ende der Strafe nichts zuschulden kommen lassen. Skype security flaw already patched, but you have to download manually
There's a big problem with Skype on the Mac: and no, it's not its ugly UI (although that is a big problem). As noted by Mashable's (and former TUAW blogger) Christina Warren, the latest version of Skype for Mac has an unpatched security flaw that that allows a person to gain remote access to another's machine simply by sending a Skype message. The flaw was discovered last month thanks to the work of researcher Gordon Maddern from the firm Pure Hacking.

Apple said talking to Nuance for voice recognition in iOS 5
Word of an Apple deal with Nuance may have gained momentum early Saturday as hints have emerged that a deal is underway. Rather than the previously dismissed buyout, Apple would forge an agreement to bring Nuance's voice recognition system into iOS, most likely iOS 5. After a security researcher publicized a vulnerability in the Mac version of Skype, the company revealed plans to release a public fix next week. New iMacs 25 percent faster than previous generation
A few days ago, we reported on Macworld's benchmark results for the new Sandy Bridge-equipped iMacs. Macworld found them to be, on average, about 16 percent faster in the Speedmark 6.5 test than the previous generation. Now Primate Labs has put together a report detailing the iMac's speed increases based on user-submitted Geekbench 2 results.

Skype for Mac vulnerability found, fix coming next week
Gordon Maddern, a security researcher in Australia, has reported a serious hole in the current Mac version of Skype that could be exploited by an attacker to remotely take control of the computer, CNet says. Skype has since responded saying they had already issued a "hotfix" for the vulnerability but will release a formal update to address it next week, over a month after Maddern reported it to the company. Maddern is not releasing details of the "extremely dangerous" problem until Skype has fixed it, he said.

This purported eight-core, hyper-threaded Sandy Bridge E-series processor is apparently a third party tester unit, hence the cloak and dagger "Intel Confidential" stamped in the middle of the thing. Apple rumored talking to use YouKu on Chinese iPhones
Apple was rumored on Friday to be making a rare exception and customizing the iPhone for a particular country. Chinese video site YouKu's head Victor Koo was purportedly talking with Apple chief Steve Jobs about having a YouKu app preloaded in the default configuration for phones sold in China. Apple has launched a new site called Apple Customer Pulse which allows select users of Apple's products to submit feedback on a variety of issues. Currently the site is only accessible to those users who have received an email invite from Apple. Several TUAW reads have contacted us saying they have received invites, but there is no firm way to know what the total numbers of invitees are or how Apple goes about choosing them.

Rovio, maker of Angry Birds, has been nominated for three different awards at this year's Develop Awards, honoring some of the best names in video game and interactive software development. The Finnish company has been nominated for Best Use of a License or IP (presumably for the Angry Birds Rio spinoff), Best Indie Studio, and Best Handheld Studio for its work on the mobile platforms.

10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook reportedly already seen live
First mention of a 10-inch BlackBerry PlayBook just this week has been quickly followed up by a sighting mentioned Friday. A reportedly credible traveller on a flight from Dallas to Toronto saw a device he said looked virtually identical to the seven-inch version but with a visibly better display. It was described to CrackBerry as unmistakable since it was using the same BlackBerry Tablet OS and was running Need For Speed, one of the bundled PlayBook games.

Comcast launches Xfinity 3G / 4G MiFi for $25
Comcast teamed up with Clearwire to bring WiMAX to the masses a couple of years ago, and now the company is jumping on the bandwidth-sharing bandwagon by offering a mobile hotspot. New iMac, MacBook Pro support 450 Mbit/sec Wi-Fi
HardMac is reporting that the newest iMacs released this week support up to 450 Mbit/sec Wi-Fi, following in the footsteps of the latest MacBook Pros. To accomplish this, Apple added a third antenna to the machines. Each antenna is capable of a data rate of 150 Mbit/sec. Combined, the three antennas achieve the 450 Mbit/sec speeds using the multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) wireless standard.
