Ballmer: 'next generation of Windows systems' coming next year
The name "Windows 8" may have been tossed around a lot as of late, but Steve Ballmer himself has only just now uttered the name for the first time in public at the company's developer forum in Japan. What's more, while he didn't divulge a ton of specifics, he did say that the "next generation of Windows systems" will be coming out next year, and that "there's a whole lot more coming," including "slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors." As ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley notes, the distinction between "slates" and "tablets" as two separate form factors is certainly an interesting one, as is the fact that he curiously didn't use the name Windows 8 in connection with those next generation Windows systems. Gameloft CFO calls app development 'an ugly scene'
Gameloft's CEO Alexandre de Rochefort spoke last weekend at the Reuters Global Technology Summit in Paris, and gave a particularly stark view of this growing global app market. While a lot of big time developers are bullish on the app market and its possibilities, de Rochefort presented a more tempered view. He called it "an ugly scene," and said that "the smartphone market is not a goldmine for developers. It's a bit like playing the lottery."
He's got a point -- there are some major developers making a lot of money selling their apps on the App Store (and Gameloft is one of those), but there are also thousands if not millions of developers out there whose apps just can't seem to find the public's interest. i3D app brings glasses-free 3D to iOS, tracks your gaze like a creepy portrait tracks Scooby Doo (video)
i3D is a new app that can create a glasses-free 3D display on iDevices, using a technology known as Head-Coupled Perspective (HCP). Developed by the folks from the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) Research Group, HCP uses a front facing camera to track the movements of a user's head, allowing the app to adjust the display accordingly. The result is a monocular 3D screen that creates the illusion of looking into a box. Leak: Sinofsky to demo Windows 8 tablet interface at D9
A rumor on Monday suggested that Microsoft might show Windows 8's tablet interface at the D9 conference next week. Windows group leader Steven Sinofsky, who was just today confirmed to be an interview guest at the show, is now rumored to be giving the Immersive UI its first public display. The demo according to WinRumors would be a "technology preview" and not necessarily a finished representation of what would ship.

Apple, MTA in communication about Grand Central store
In spite of rumors, New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority has talked with Apple about a possible store in Grand Central Terminal, according to MTA spokesman Jeremy Soffin. Although an Apple spokesman has refused to comment, Soffin adds that he hopes the company will bid on a space that's become available for rent. Other businesses may choose to compete for the location.

Verizon rolling out LTE coverage in 21 additional markets on June 16th, wins 4G blackjack
This could be just the news your lonely little Thunderbolt has been waiting for. Verizon today announced the addition of 21 new markets to its LTE coverage, starting June 16th. The list includes some biggish spots, like Boise, ID, Milwaukee / Madison, WI, Salt Lake City, UT, and Hartford, CT -- Northern California will be getting a major coverage boost, as well, with the existing Bay Area coverage being expanded to Marin and Solano counties. Apple snaps up over 200 patents from Freescale Semiconductor
Apple has acquired rights to over 200 patents and patent applications from Freescale Semiconductor, a report notes. Although assignment of the patents dates back to April 11th, it was only recorded on May 18th, and more recently discovered. Freescale was originally a division of Motorola, dating back to 1949, which also makes it one of the oldest semiconductor makers in the world. Motorola divested itself of Freescale in 2003.

Nike+ GPS app free in the App Store now
Nike+ is about to turn five years old and they are celebrating by giving their Nike+ GPS app away for free for a limited time. The app is similar to other run-tracking apps, but it's got a much cleaner interface than most and a color-coded map line so you can see the parts of your run where you were faster or slower.
Nike+ GPS also offers some fun features other running apps don't, such as motivational messages from Nike's top athletes, personalized PowerSongs to jazz up your run, and even the ability to hear mid-run cheers every time your friends like or comment on your run status.

Liberty: Barnes & Noble buy a bet Android will rule e-books
Liberty Media's proposed buyout of Barnes & Noble is a wager Android will control e-book reading, chairman John Malone said in an interview Monday. He believed that Android itself could control unit sales and that the Nook would be the primary platform, whether the device itself or through the third-party app. The business had an edge since it wasn't tied to Barnes & Noble's hardware, the WSJ heard from Malone.

Square Register and Card Case hands-on
It looks like Square's little headphone jack-connected credit card reader has some company. The mobile payment startup introduced two new additions to its unique stable of payment options in San Francisco this morning that do away with credit cards, paper receipts, and even the bantam reader itself (to some degree). First up is the Square Register, an app that allows merchants to accept payments by way of the card reader or through a card-less (no, it's not NFC) tab -- like, "put it on my tab" -- system, and uses Google-style analytics to keep track of payments, receipts, and trends. Apple demands end to Lodsys licensing requests
Following up on its investigations, Apple has sent a letter to Lodsys asking that the company stop demanding patent licenses from iOS developers. Lodsys has claimed that by supporting in-app purchases, developers are in violation of patents it owns. In a series of blog posts, the firm further charged that while Apple is licensed for in-app purchase technology, its "pixie dust" does not extend to developers.

Apple responds to Lodsys infringement accusations, says developers are not responsible
Apple has responded to developers targeted by Lodsys, a patent holding firm that accused iOS devs of infringing on its intellectual property covering in-app upgrade purchases. In a letter from Apple dated today, the company claims that Lodsys's accusations are baseless, and explains that devs, or "App Makers," are "entitled to use this technology free from any infringement claims by Lodsys," because Apple has already licensed the technology on their behalf. i3D - Head Tracking-App nun erhältlich
Vor einem Monat ging ein Video durchs Netz, in dem 3D-Technologie ohne Brillen auf dem iPad gezeigt wurde. Das funktionierte dank Headtracking. Nun ist dieses Konzept als i3D kostenlos für iPhone 4, den aktuellen iPod touch und iPad 2 im App Store erhältlich und bietet neben dem ursprünglich gezeigten Modell auch noch einige andere, die auf der gleichen Technik basieren. Weder das Gyroskop noch der Beschleunigungssensor werden verwendet. Natürlich funktioniert die App nicht bei jeden Lichtverhältnissen, aber das Konzept an sich ist sehr eindrucksvoll. Eee Pad Transformer gets overclocked to 1.4GHz, deemed less than stable
While many of you continue your quest for an Eee Pad Transformer, some folks, predictably, have already figured out how to overclock it. Someone in the XDA forum posted a custom kernel allowing hackers to crank the tablet's clock speed to 1.4GHz, the same peak reached by the ViewSonic G Tablet. Beware, though, that performance at that speed has proven unreliable, so the with the dev recommends a more modest 1.2GHz to avoid data loss, a meltdown, and "injury of assorted puppies."

Apple has sent a letter to Lodsys, in which it states that iOS application developers are protected from any infringement claims thanks to Apple’s patent licenses. “Apple is undisputedly licensed to these patent and the Apple App Makers are protected by that license. 3D (sort of) on your iPad without glasses
There's a nifty little free demo you may want to pick up that uses the iPad camera to do some head tracking and create a kind of faux 3D on your iPad display. Square kills the need for NFC with virtual "tabs" and Card Case
Square CEO Jack Dorsey certainly had the right idea in having his presentation broadcast as part of the TechCrunch Disrupt conference this week. In an announcement made this afternoon, Dorsey essentially announced a sea change in the way that people can make purchases at local businesses.
To start with, the company has announced a way to eliminate the need for near-field communications (NFC) capability in smartphones. iPad 2 production may not be affected by explosion at Foxconn plant
Asian tech industry blog Digitimes has reported on two seemingly contradictory stories regarding how Friday's tragic explosion at the Foxconn plant in Chengdu China will affect iPad 2 production. In one post Digitimes states that production has been suspended at the Chengdu plant. Although the Chengdu plant produces less than thirty percent of iPad 2s, the production suspension report has caused concerns over availability constraints in the near future. The majority of the devices are manufactured at a plant in Shenzhen.

Noch nicht ganz unsichtbar, aber dafür bekommt das Wort Handy eine bedeutungsschwangere Ebene zusätzlich verpasst. Grundlegende Befehle brauchen also nicht mehr auf dem Device sondern können direkt auf der Handinnenfläche ausgeführt werden. Microsoft entwickelt Prototyp von Dateisystem

Amazon tablets may cost $349 and $449, forced to go LCD only
Further insight may have surfaced for Amazon's Coyote and Hollywood tablets with Taiwanese sources claiming Monday to know more about pricing and Amazon's original goals. The seven-inch Coyote is now targeted to cost $349 and could be one of the least expensive dual-core Tegra 2 tablets. iPhone 5 rumors prompted by Apple purchase of glass-cutting machines
Cheesy phishing scams notwithstanding, there is an incredible amount of interest growing in Apple's next-generation iPhone. The rumors about the iPhone 5 started the day that the iPhone 4 began showing up in stores, and almost a year later, they're reaching a fever pitch. Sony erwartet Milliardenverlust

WSJ: Apple still eyeing Grand Central terminal for new retail store
Last week, The New York Observer claimed an anonymous source within the Metropolitan Transit Authority confirmed that Apple has killed plans to lease space within New York's Grand Central terminal. Today, the Wall Street Journal refutes that report with its own sources that suggest Apple is still considering the lucrative retail space.

Mozilla debuts first beta of Firefox 5
Mozilla has posted the first official beta release of Firefox 5, its next browser upgrade. Changes from Mozilla's experimental Aurora channel were merged and tested over the weekend. Kobo this morning put itself back into contention in the e-reader space at BookExpo America by launching the eReader Touch Edition. Verizon detailed one of its largest expansions yet with notice that 21 cities would get its LTE network on June 16. The upgrade will focus the most on Michigan and Wisconsin, with Ann Arbor, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Madison, Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, and Wisconsin Dells all getting 4G. As rumored, T-Mobile overhauled its individual and family plans today and simplified your options to just three tiers of voice service. Individuals can choose between 500, 1,000 or unlimited minutes, with unlimited text messaging adding $10 and data add-ons ranging from $10 for 200MB to $60 for 10GB. Family plans come in 1,000, 2,000 and unlimited minute varieties while the sharable data and text services cost twice as much as their individual counterparts. Microsoft teases 500 new WP7 features, hints new hardware
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer gave clues at his presentation for the Japan Microsoft Developer Forum (video below) that the upcoming Mango update for Windows Phone 7 would not just have a large number of features but might be matched by new hardware at the same time. The release would have over 500 new features, including the known expanded language update that would give Japan devices by the end of the year. He alluded also to more details of hardware partners and carriers, suggesting more hardware might show at the planned May 24 event.

Meine Lieblingssportarten sind schnell zusammengefasst: Schwimmen und Rad fahren. Da Schwimmbäder in Berlin in der Regel für normale Arbeitnehmer geschlossen haben bleibt das Rad fahren übrig. Seit 1999 leistet mir hierfür ein damals 1.500.- DM teures Mountain Bike gute Dienste. Wenn ein LinkedIn-Nutzer sein Kennwort über die SSL/TLS-verschlüsselte Seite eingegeben hat und erfolgreich authentifiziert wurde, leitet ihn das Business-Netzwerk auf eine unverschlüsselte Seite zurück. Anschließend erhält er ein Authentifizeirungstoken namens leo_auth_token und eine Session Id - beides als unverschlüsselte Cookies. Diese beiden Parameter lassen sich in einem unverschlüsselten WLAN, etwa einem öffentlichem Hotspot am Bahnhof oder im Hotel von jedermann mitschneiden.

Sechs Mal mehr Datenverkehr hat Sunrise auf ihrem Mobilfunknetz als noch vor zwei Jahren. Um die Hälfte zugenommen hat laut Sunrise auch dier Sprachbereich. Z2Live is the Seattle-based developer behind the popular freemium Trade Nations title for iOS, and the company's latest release is another freemium app called MetalStorm Online. As you can see from the picture above, it's a combat flight simulator, which has you piloting a series of jets through the air and trying to take down enemies both real and computer-controlled.
It's relatively simple, so flight buffs will be disappointed with how superficial the game is, but as an arcade flight simulator, I liked it. Apple said pushing for curved glass on next iPhone
Apple may borrow a cue from earlier iPod nanos and even Dell for the display of the next iPhone, insiders claimed Monday. Component suppliers have heard Apple would implement a curved glass cover and had been pushing to overcome the cost barriers to the technology by buying the glass cutter machinery itself. The Legacy Photo Project: die größte Kamera der Welt
Man nehme einen Flugzeughangar und schon hat man die größte Kamera der Welt. Das Legacy Photo Project ist natürlich alles andere als urlaubstauglich, dafür gibt es ein souverän großes Bildformat. Die riesige Lochkamera ist 13,71 x 48,76 x 24,38m groß und das produzierte Bild hat eine Größe von 9,62 x 33,83m. Das Bild wurde 2006 in der Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro/Kalifornien geschossen.

According to MacRumors, yet another Apple-styled phishing email is making the rounds. This one seems to be a lot more insidious than another phishing email that circulated last week. While the earlier email had several aspects to it that were dead giveaways it was fake, this new email could very easily trip up anyone who doesn't pay attention to the latest Apple news. Brazil's World Cup host cities first in line to get 4G upgrades
Well, it looks like folks in Brazil that live in one of the twelve host cities for the 2014 FIFA World Cup now have another reason to be glad their city was chosen. The Brazilian government has just announced that those cities will be the first in line to get 4G service when the country's long overdue network upgrades eventually begin. Unfortunately, it's still not clear exactly when that will happen -- a government official only said that companies will go through a bidding process to win the contract for the network, which should presumably roll out sometime before the World Cup kicks off in three years' time.

McDwiff reads DWF files on your Mac or iPad
In the world of computer-aided design (CAD), Autodesk's Design Web Format (DWF) file format is a common way to send drawings to others who need to view, review or print design files. Through the use of compression schemes and a way of sending only what recipients need to see, DWF files are small and easily transferred through email. BBC HD quietly begins broadcasting in 1080p, but not all Sony HDTVs can handle it
We'd pretty much given up waiting for broadcast 1080p, since other than some video on-demand services you'll generally need to stick to Blu-ray to tick that box, but around the end of March BBC HD changed all that. It's taking advantage of a part of the Freeview HD spec that allows the broadcaster to dynamically select between 1080p / 25fps and 1080i / 25fps transmission and the boxes are mandated to be able to output 1080p / 50fps. Bericht: Google war wegen illegaler Medikamentenwerbung vorgewarnt

HP thinks the TouchPad will be 'better than number one,' if that's even possible
HP's expectations for its new TouchPad tablet are running pretty high -- so high, in fact, that they can only be expressed with a make-believe number. During a recent press conference in Cannes, HP's Eric Cador boldly declared that his company's new slate won't just be the best on the market, it'll be the bestest. Cador explained:

Apple making huge strides into government, enterprise, and small business
On Friday, Needham analyst Charlie Wolf released a research note stating that Apple had made some huge advancements into the government, enterprise, and small business markets in the US -- sectors typically dominated by Windows PC sales. Total shipments of Macs increased 66 percent in the first quarter of 2011, while PC sales only increased 4.5 percent.
Apple's gains get more interesting when you break them down into sectors. In the same time period, Mac sales increased 94.7 percent in enterprise (large businesses) and 80.4 percent in small businesses. In government, Mac sales were up a whopping 155.6 percent, while PC sales were up just 2.3 percent in the government market. I

Apple Store app updated with new options
Apple has updated its Apple Store iPhone app. The update incorporates several new features, including an enhanced in-store mode that lets users get help and support quickly when they're at an Apple Retail Store. The app also allows users to custom-configure a new Mac with build-to-order options (such as more RAM or a larger hard drive).

Paper claims iPad 2 untouched by explosion, 3rd worker dies
Mixed news emerged late Sunday in the wake of the Foxconn plant explosion in Chengdu that compounded the tragedy but also gave hope for production. Foxconn confirmed that a third worker had died as a result of wounds from the Friday plant blast at one of its polishing workshops. The company also revealed in early investigations that "combustible dust" in a duct, likely aluminum, was responsible for the accident.

Following the tragic explosion at Foxconn's Chengdu plant on Friday, the company has now confirmed to All Things Digital the death of a third employee, with nine remaining in hospital.
