Pocket 5.0 adds "Highlights," new navigation
Pocket 5.0, the reborn/renamed version of the Read It Later app, has been released. Version 5.0 for iOS has been redesigned to provide a more streamlined approach to search and navigation. The update introduces a new feature called Highlights that uses your reading habits to make a reading list of the most relevant articles.
Navigation has been improved to make switching between your reading list, highlights, favorites, and archive faster. Filtering has also been tweaked. Finally, the search function has been unified between lists, meaning if you won't have to re-enter your search query when you go from your list to your archive.

iOS 7.0.4 ist da, iBooks wird modern

Apple hat ein Punkt-Update für iOS freigegeben. Große Neuigkeiten gibt es nicht, es geht vor allem um Bugfixes und offenbar um ein Problem bei der Vermittlung von FaceTime-Gesprächen. Das Update ist auf iPhone und iPad Air jeweils rund 38 MB groß und kann direkt über die Geräte geladen werden.
Zeitgleich rollt Apple auch eine neue Version von iBooks aus, die das lieb gewonnene Holzregal für die E-Book-Sammlung gegen die iOS-7-Optik tauscht. iBooks war eine der letzten Apple-eigenen Apps, deren Design mit dem Sprung auf iOS 7 nicht überarbeitet worden war. Ebenfalls neu: iTunes U.

BlackBerry Messenger Now Supports iOS Devices Without Cellular Connections [iOS Blog]
BlackBerry has updated its BBM messaging app for iOS to include support for the iPod touch and (sort of) the iPad, as well as additional sharing options and other improvements. The prior version of BBM only worked with iPhones and iPads that have a cellular connection, and wouldn't work with iPod Touch or Wi-Fi-only iPad devices. However, BlackBerry has not rewritten the user interface to fit the iPad and BBM on the tablet works solely in pixel-doubled mode. A new update to BBM is rolling out for Android and iPhone users. In rare 1983 speech, Steve Jobs alluded to the iPad, Siri, the App Store, mainstream Internet connectivity, Google Maps and more
About a year and a half ago, I attended a startup event in Chicago which featured Siri co-founder Dag Kittlaus as the keynote speaker. Kittlaus' speech centered on the future of technology, though he did manage to relay a number of interesting tidbits about the history of Siri (i.e Steve Jobs wasn't a fan of the name).
In describing how the acquisition process got started, Kittlaus recalled that Apple first called Siri's office back in 2010, just three weeks after the Siri app launched on the App Store. Apple told Kittlaus to soon expect a call from Scott Forstall.
Time passed and the call from Cupertino, as promised, came in. Only it wasn't Forstall on the other end of the line, it was Steve Jobs.

Apple Retail Stores Experiencing Computer Downtime, Personal Pickup Affected
Customers at Apple Stores around the country are running into problems attempting to pick up ordered merchandise and make purchases, as Apple's retail stores appear to be experiencing a system-wide outage that is preventing the store from making some sales. We have received quite a few tips from readers and additional complaints on Twitter indicate that the issue is widespread and affecting quite a few Apple customers. Part of the outage includes Personal Pickup, which means people have been unable to collect ordered Retina iPad minis in stores. First Look: Skech Flipper for iPad Air
Coming from Skech, Flipper for iPad Air ($40) is a lot like the company's earlier Fabric Flipper for the previous iPad. Apple iWatch to come in two sizes, analyst claims
Apple's "iWatch" will come with OLED displays in two sizes, for men and women, according to an analyst who specializes in the Asian display market. Alongside iOS 7.0.4, Apple has released version 6.0.2 of its Apple TV software, which is based upon the same iOS code. There do not appear to be any obvious changes to the interface in the update. Apple seeks $380 million in damages re-trial; Samsung offers up $52 million
It can sometimes be tricky keeping up with the seemingly never-ending onslaught of legal filings and court complexities in Apple's ongoing suit with Samsung.
As it stands now, Apple and Samsung are currently engaged in a re-trial on damages stemming from their first trial. To help keep things simple, here's a basic recap of events to be aware of before we get into the latest news from Apple and Samsung's current trial.
In August of 2012, a jury found that a wide range of Samsung smartphones infringed upon Apple's intellectual property. Consequently, the jury awarded Apple US$1.05 billion in damages.

Apple Releases iOS 7.0.4 With Fix for FaceTime Call Issue
Apple today released iOS 7.0.4 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, a minor update that includes a number of improvements and bug fixes for the operating system. According to Apple, the update repairs a bug that could cause FaceTime calls to fail for some users. Apple has also released iOS 6.1.5 for the fourth generation iPod touch. iOS 7.0.4 comes just over three weeks after the release of iOS 7.0.3, which added support for iCloud Keychain and fixed accelerometer issues. iOS 7.0.4 can be downloaded via the software update tool in the settings menu on iOS devices.

iBooks for iOS update ditches the wooden shelves, iTunes U updated too
Apple has updated its iBooks and iTunes U iOS apps with an iOS 7 look and feel. The new iBooks app ditches the wooden shelves for a Newsstand-like frosted glass background. The store portion of the app has also gotten a complete makeover, now mimicking the look of the App Store and iTunes Store apps. Not all skeuomorphic details are gone, however. Page curls remain.
As for iTunes U, the app now has a very similar look and feel to the new iBooks app, with frosted shelves and a Catalog where users can download new content that looks similar in style to the App Store. Both apps have new icons.

Apple to pay quarterly dividend today for AAPL shareholders
AAPL investors take note: today is the company's payday for AAPL shareholders. By the close of market today Apple will pay shareholders of record its quarterly dividend of US$3.05 per share. Shareholders must have held the stock no later than Wednesday, November 11th to get this quarter's dividend.

Patentstreit zwischen Apple und Samsung: Apple beharrt auf Schadenersatz
Nachdem das US-Bezirksgericht in San Jose am Dienstag die Jury für den Patent-Prozess zwischen Apple und Samsung gewählt hat, startete am Mittwoch die zweite Runde des Rechtsstreites zwischen den beiden Unternehmen.
Apple wurde im August 2012 zu einer Schadenersatzzahlung von mehr als einer Milliarde US-Dollar verurteilt. Review: Speedometer GPS Tracker and HUD
Speedometer is a nifty U.S. $1.99 universal iOS app that provides a speedometer for cars and cycling, as well as start times, time elapsed, distance, average speed, maximum speed and your altitude.
The app also features a map mode where you can see your starting point and current position, and a share button to email your current position information. The app also provides your latitude and longitude, and an indication of how accurate the GPS information is. A compass gives you your direction in degrees, and more generally, like NW or SE.

We all love ads (no we don't) and if there's one thing we love even more than random ads (which we don't love) it's ads that are very clearly targeted at our mobile devices because a social network (which we trusted) is using our device info against us (which is pretty lame), right? In a blog post Twitter revealed today that it will now let advertisers target mobile ads based on the device you use, the OS, and even the method you use to connect to the network.

Italian IRS disputes with Apple for more than a billion euro in subtracted revenues
Like many orher hi-tech corporations, Apple also has come under scrutiny of the italian Internal Revenue Service. Apple allegedly set up trade operations with foreign companies in order to subtract the Italian tax authorities more than a billion Euro.Yesterday the company's headquarters in Piazza San Babila, facing the world famous cathedral of Milan, was searched by men of the financial police (Guardia di Finanza) on the orders of prosecutors Adriano Scudieri and Francesco Greco, seizing computer documents and phone records. They also issued formal notifications of investigation addressed to two Apple Italy's executives, whose name haven't been disclosed yet. The indictment alleges that Apple Italy subtracted to the Italian tax authorities € 206 million Euro in 2010 and more than 853 million Euro in 2011, falsifying records in order to make any investigation difficult to operate. MapQuest gets new look, features for iOS 7 users
With Google and Apple locked in an epic battle to win the maps wars, many forget that there are other decent mapping services for iOS. One such service is MapQuest, the tried-and-true mapping solution that has been around for years and years.
Today the company updated its MapQuest app for iOS 7 adding a sleek new interface and several feature enhancements including route bookmarking and, my favorite, a status bar that displays your full route statistics, including where you are along the journey and the time and distance left to reach your destination. Apple investiert 10.5 Milliarden US-Dollar in Produktionsmittel
Apple erwartet für das laufende Fiskaljahr, das am 1. Oktober begonnen hat, Investitionen im Umfang von 10.5 Milliarden US-Dollar für die Herstellung von Produktions-Materialien. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr investiert das Unternehmen 61 Prozent mehr Kapital in die Herstellung und den Kauf spezieller Maschinen. Im Vergleich zum Jahr 2008 haben sich die Ausgaben in diesem Segment fast verzehnfacht.
Aufgrund der spezifischen Design-Vorgaben von Apple muss das Unternehmen entweder eigene Maschinen entwickeln oder die Produktions-Anlagen von einem Partner herstellen lassen. Using Calendar's 'travel time' feature in Mavericks
One of OS X Mavericks' coolest features is the addition of a travel time calculator in Calendar. You may not know exactly how make it work, or even know it exists, but rest assured it's there waiting for you.
Simply open the calendar application and open an event. Regardless of if it's a preexisting event or not simply look for the "Add Location" info box below the event title. When you click this box your Mac will tell you the computer would like to access your current location. This allows the travel time calculator to know how far you are from your location. Here's an interesting little fact: the Christiana Mall Apple store in Newark, Delaware sells more iPhones and any other Apple Store in the United States. As ABC news reports that's because Delaware has no sales tax so people can pick up iPhones and other Apple products there at a significant discount compared to the rest of the country. The folks at SeaTurtle.org want to help you find your next iOS device and have setup a web tracker and notification service for Apple's latest iPhone and tablets, including the Retina iPad mini. The online tracker allows you to enter your zip code and select your iPad or iPhone model. The resulting table will then show the availability at nearby Apple retail stores. If the device is out of stock, users can opt to sign up for a notification service that'll fire off an email when the iPad or iPhone model shows up as being in stock on Apple's inventory list again.
The service says it does not scrape the Apple website and instead uses a publicly accessible XML service on the Apple site to determine iDevice availability. It likely adds

Mavericks
Binnen der letzten zwei Wochen habe ich alle meine Macs auf Mavericks umgesetzt. Bis auf ein Mailproblem auf einem Mac auch vollkommen problemlos und gewohnt komfortabel.
Der Ersteindruck ist ausgesprochen positiv. Was auch immer Apple mit seiner Speicherverwaltung angestellt hat, Mavericks hat offenbar panische Angst davor, eine Auslagerungsdatei zu verwenden und zaubert magisch mehr Speicher in den Rechner:

Wir hatten es ja neulich schon von Elektronik-freien Lautsprechern für Smartphones. Hier ein Design, das etwas einfacher daherkommt. Das Radio Dock lässt sich mit dem iPhone 4(s) und iPhone 5(s) betreiben, bei Bedarf kann das Ladekabel von hinten in die Aussparung für das Smartphone gezogen werden. Auch hier geht es um die Verstärkung der Telefon-Lautsprecher durch einen größeren Korpus. Wie es klingt? Keine Ahnung. Der Preis ist jedoch mit 40 US-Dollar deutlich günstiger als die Gramohorn-Variante für Besitzer des HTC One.

Apple could be planning to discontinue the iPad 2 in the first quarter of 2014, an analyst has said while predicting shipments of the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 this week. Samsung Galaxy Core Plus: Neues Mittelmaß für Taiwan

Ein neuer Tag, ein neues Galaxy. In Taiwan geht aktuell das Galaxy Core Plus an den Start. Irritierend dabei ist jedoch, dass die Ausstattung des Vorgängermodells, Galaxy Core, leicht besser war. Häh?
Konkret reduziert Samsung das Telefon-RAM von 1 GB auf 768 MB und den internen Speicher von 8 GB auf 4 GB. Das neue Smartphone läuft mit einem 1,2 GHz schnellen Doppelkern-Prozessor und immerhin mit Android 4.2. Gleich geblieben ist die Auflösung des 4,3"-Displays (800x480 Pixel) und die der Kamera (5 Megapixel).
Das Galaxy Core Plus kostet rund 200 Euro ohne Vertrag.

Der Umsatz mit SMS geht erstmals zurück
Der mit dem Versand von Kurznachrichten von deutschen Mobilfunkanbietern erzielte Umsatz wird dieses Jahr erstmals rückläufig sein. The statistics included a claim that there had been a doubling of iPads sold into education in the UK, and an astonishing 94 per cent market share in education in the US, must have made grim reading for Apple’s competitors. As a veteran developer of education apps for iOS, I already had a pretty good view of the landscape of tablets in education. Research I conducted this summer pointed towards a similar picture, with a fourteen-to-one lead over Android in the UK, and a fifty-to-one lead in the US. So while Tim Cook’s numbers didn’t surprise me, it was good to confirm my findings. Bei Bloomberg werden u.a. neue Laser für die MacBook-Produktion erwähnt und auch Werkzeuge für die Oberflächenpolierung von Smartphones. Interessantes Detail: Apple schließt mit immer mehr Werkzeug- und Machinenbauern Verträge ab, die die exklusive Nutzung garantieren soll. Neuesten Gerüchten zufolge soll die Entwicklung des Fernsehers aus dem Hause Apple zugunsten der iWatch vorerst auf Eis gelegt worden sein. Bislang gingen die meisten von einem Start des iTV Ende 2014 aus. Schon seit längerem gibt es Gerüchte, dass Apple an einem eigenen Fernseher mit revolutionärem User-Interface arbeitet. Italienische Steuerbehörden ermitteln angeblich gegen Apple
Gemäss einem Insider aus italienischen Justizkreisen ermittelt die Mailänder Staatsanwaltschaft gegen Apple. Die Staatsanwaltschaft will im Rahmen einer regulären Steuerprüfung angeblich den Nachweis erbringen, dass Apples Tochtergesellschaft «Apple Italia» in zwei Steuererklärungen mehr als eine Milliarde Euro nicht deklariert haben soll.
Apple soll es im Jahr 2010 unterlassen haben, den italienischen Steuerbehörden 206 Millionen Euros zu melden. Im Jahr 2011 soll der nicht deklarierte Betrag auf 853 Millionen Euro angestiegen sein. Den Vorwürfen zufolge hat das Unternehmen Teile des Gewinns über die irische Tochtergesellschaft «Apple Sales International» verbucht. «Apple Sales International» kauft die Apple-Produkte bei den asiatischen Zulieferern und verkauft sie über eine weitere Tochtergesellschaft an die Apple-Händler. Kaum eine Spielhalle in Japan ohne "Taiko no Tetsujin", ein Trommelspiel für ein oder zwei Spieler. Every time Apple introduces a new product at a media event, they love showing us a video depicting the incredible, and sometimes pioneering, manufacturing methods used to create their latest and greatest device.
