Apple blocking older version of Flash Player plugin on Safari
Apple announced today that they've updated the web plug-in blocking mechanism in Safari on OS X to disable older versions of the Adobe Flash Player. The move is a way to protect users from a recent vulnerability that took advantage of an older version of the Flash Player plugin.
If you're running one of these older versions, a "Blocked Plug-In" alert may appear on the Safari browser page where the Flash Player is located. Clicking the alert displays the message shown at the top of this post, which enables downloading of an up-to-date version of the plugin.

Lockheed Martin powers up its first GPS III satellite, stays on track for 2014
It's been awhile since we heard much about Lockheed Martin's GPS III satellite family beyond mention of an early prototype. The next-gen positioning system just took a big step forward with word that the company has successfully powered up the first production craft of the bunch, Space Vehicle One. Judge Koh reduces damages in Apple v. Samsung case by $440 million, orders new trial
There's been a significant development in the court case that saw Apple awarded $1.05 billion in damages last August. According to The Recorder, Judge Lucy Koh has ordered that the amount Samsung must pay Apple be reduced by $440 million, or almost 40%, and that a new trial be held to decide how much of that amount will still be paid.
There's evidently been some question regarding 14 of the Samsung devices covered by the lawsuit and exactly how much of the damages originally awarded to Apple can be attributed to them. This new trial will look more closely at the specific intellectual properties these devices are violati

tap2focus is a clever poor man's Lytro app for the iPhone
We've all been impressed with the Lytro Light Field Camera, which allows a single picture to have multiple focus points. It's a complex process, and the Lytro cameras aren't cheap: they begin at US$399. Our Steve Sande reviewed the Lytro Camera about a year ago and was impressed with the technology.
Now, a $0.99 app called tap2focus kinda, sorta simulates what a Lytro Camera can do, but in a rather low-tech but clever way.
Here's how the app works. You take a picture by tapping on an area you want in focus. Then you tap another area that should be in soft focus. Tap3focus then snaps another

FCC chairman Genachowski to examine cellphone unlock ban
The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission has weighed in on the Internet response to the expiration of the exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) which now bans the consumer unlock of cell phones. Speaking to TechCrunch, Julian Genachowski said that he believes that the ban "raises competition concerns; it raises innovation concerns" and the agency would look into what they could do about the matter.

David Einhorn drops his lawsuit against Apple
Greenlight Capital hedge fund manager David Einhorn has decided to end what Apple CEO Tim Cook has referred to as a "silly sideshow" by dropping the lawsuit he'd brought against 1 Infinite Loop in early February. Filed in conjunction with other Apple shareholders, the lawsuit sought to force Apple to share more of its cash with investors and kill a vote by shareholders involving preferred shares.

Researchers discover new, in-use vulnerability in Java
A new vulnerability has been discovered in the latest versions of Java, v1.6 Update 41 and v1.7 Update 15, say researchers from security firms FireEye and Kaspersky Lab. Critically the bug is already being exploited in order to download and install a remote access tool, "McRAT," on targeted computers. The malware is being spread through a JPG file hosted on a Japanese website.

T-Mobile Attacked by AT&T in Newspaper Ad Ahead of Potential Rebranding
According to TmoNews, T-Mobile is gearing up to introduce significant changes to its service in March, eliminating both contracts and early termination fees, along with implementing installment payments for its equipment. T-Mobile's move to end subsidies was confirmed by the company in late December.-For starters, kiss contracts goodbye as T-Mobile moves to a no-contract world. Existing customers will finish out their current contract or upgrade to a new device without a new contract, whichever comes first. New customers won't have to suffer with any long-term commitments. Contract wise that is. -Early termination fees will be a thing of the past as well, which makes complete sense when announced with the removal of contracts.

League of Legends out now on Mac in open beta ... finally
League of Legends has finally released that Mac open beta that we heard was coming just a little while ago. Back in 2010, Riot Games had a ported Mac version all ready to go, but eventually determined that it just wasn't good enough, and not compatible with, the way they wanted to run their game. That led to a shutdown on development, but the company secretly restarted work on a native client, and it's now out and ready for download for everyone.

Judge invalidates almost half of Apple’s $1B verdict against Samsung
According to a report from MSN News/MacRumors, US District Judge Lucy Koh has invalidated part of the $1 billion originally awarded to Apple in its patent infringement case against Samsung back in August. Judge orders new Apple vs. Samsung trial to reevaluate $450.5 million in damage awards
Samsung has tentatively been on the hook for $1.05 billion in penalties after allegedly infringing on Apple's patents, but that figure is about to change -- for better or for worse. News: Apple’s $1.05B award from Samsung cut by $440M
Apple’s award of $1.05 billion in damages from Samsung was reduced by more than 40 percent by Judge Lucy Koh today, according to a tweet from The Recorder reporter Vanessa Blum. Koh has reportedly ordered a new damages trial on the $440 million removed from the award. Apple was initially awarded the $1.05 billion in August after a jury found Samsung violated Apple patents. Five-year-old spends $2,500 on in-app purchases
The next time you let your child play with your iPad or iPhone, you might want to pay attention to what he or she is up to. The BBC ran a story today about five-year-old Danny Kitchen of Bristol, England, who ran up a £1,700 (about US$2,500) bill in iTunes after his dad entered his passcode to allow Danny download a free iPad game from the App Store.
While Danny only spent about fifteen minutes playing with the game, that was long enough for him to repeatedly tap an in-app purchase button and rack up a string of £69.99 (about $105) charges. Mum and Dad received emails from the iTunes App Store the next day itemizing the purchases, but they figured that the charges were an error and ignored them.

FOSS Patents reports that judge Luck Koh has struck nearly half of the $1 billion in damages awarded to Apple in its patent lawsuit against Samsung last August, calling for a new trial to set revised damage amounts for the affected portions of the judgment.The $450 million amount [struck from the damage award] corresponds to 14 Samsung products, with respect to which a new damages trial must be held because the court cannot make the adjustments it deems necessary for legal reasons: the jury set only one damages figure per product, but half a dozen different intellectual property rights were found infringed, resulting in a lack of clarity as to what portion of a per-product damages figure is attributable to a given intellectual property right.

Breaking: Apple and Samsung to retry $440 million in damages
In a ruling minutes ago out of San Francisco, Judge Lucy Koh ordered $440 million in damages payable to Apple set aside from the landmark smartphone trial's damages applied against Samsung. Sometimes photography is all about capturing the moment quickly and not the expensive camera equipment you tote around in your bag. Wired has an excellent story about Ben Woodworth, who used an iPhone 5 and a $5 macro lens attachment to capture a series of stunning snowflake portraits. News: Kid spends $2,500 in 15 minute in-app purchase spree

FCC Will Investigate U.S. Mobile Phone Unlocking Ban

Apple deals: Save up to $920 on Macs
At Apple's online store save $230 on the refurb. 21.5-inch iMac with a 2.9GHz Intel quad-core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, it is now only $1,269. A 20 percent price break on the refurb. 27-inch iMac, with a 2.7GHz Intel quad-core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive, lowers the cost by $340 to $1,359. The refurbished 15.4-inch Retina MBP with 2.3GHz Intel quad-core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of flash storage has been reduced by $320 to $1779.

Apple blocks older versions of Flash in Safari
Apple has updated the plugin-blocking component in Safari to prevent earlier versions of Flash from being used, a new support document states. Lion, Mountain Lion, and Snow Leopard users are affected. The update comes in response to recently-discovered vulnerabilities in Flash that have already been patched by Adobe, but which could impact people who don't update on a regular basis.

iTunes exclusively streaming David Bowie's new album
As reported by Apple Insider, David Bowie's forthcoming album, The Next Day, is exclusively available to stream on iTunes in its entirety until March, 12th, when the album is released.
The Next Day, available for pre-order now, is Bowie's first album in 10 years and has come as somewhat of a surprise. Bowie first announced the album in early January with a video for the track "Where Are We Now?".

Logitech cuts 5 percent of core staff as part of its shift to mobile
Logitech made clear in January that it was jettisoning weight in a bid to stem losses and focus on more successful technologies like mobile peripherals. Sadly, we're learning today that this also includes cutting jobs. First Looks: iFixit iOpener
Hopefully you never have to open up an iPad, but if you do, iFixit is offering iOpener ($15) as the way to do it. In the set, you get a tubular bean bag -- the iOpener itself -- plus two plastic opening tools, eight guitar picks, and a small suction cup. You stick the bean bag in the microwave, and then lay it on the edge of the tablet to melt the glue. iFixit says you'll be able to pry off the display in about half an hour.

Greenlight Capital withdraws lawsuit against Apple
Greenlight Capital has withdrawn its lawsuit against Apple over a proxy proposal that was meant to be voted on at this week's shareholders' meeting, says AllThingsD. Before the meeting Greenlight had managed to secure an injunction against the vote from a federal judge. Regarding the withdrawal, a Greenlight spokesman explains that the company managed to achieve its aims with the lawsuit. "Apple removed the bundled proposal from the shareholder meeting therefore resolving the issue."

Tapestry lets you create tap-able iPhone stories
Tapestry describes itself as "a portable collection of beautifully designed, short, tappable stories." It's an online service from Betaworks that lets you create short stories for others to read on their iPhone or iPad. Unlike a traditional ebook, the Tapestry stories are meant to be read in one direction. You tap to go forward and you can't go back.

Google's Zopfli compression algorithm aims to speed up the web
Google's latest attempt to squeeze data into increasingly smaller and smaller spaces comes with a rather silly sounding name inspired by Swiss bread. Zopfli is a compression algorithm that Mountain View claims can create files between three and eight percent smaller than Zlib. Of course, the trade off is that it requires between two and three times as much CPU time to finish shoving everything into a neat little package. Apple argues against data tracking case going class action
Apple has asked US District Judge Lucy Koh to block a motion to turn an iPhone and iPad location tracking lawsuit into a class action, Bloomberg reports. The company says that the plaintiffs haven't shown that any personal information was collected by apps, and hence that any harm was caused. On top of this Apple alleges that the plaintiffs' lawyers have abandoned damage claims because they can't show any injury, and are just trying to recover legal fees.

YouTube adds AirPlay competitor to iOS app
In another push to compete against AirPlay and the Apple TV, the latest YouTube update for iOS adds the ability to direcly stream video to a TV without AirPlay. This is a feature its Android brother has had since November.

iFixit releases tablet repairability list, Apple scores poorly
iFixit, the trusty resource for tech teardown and repair, has put together a tablet repairability guide for its readers. Unfortunately for the home tinkerer, Apple's iPad has performed rather poorly. iFixit places a high value on tech that is designed with repairability in mind, where consumers can easily and cheaply repair their tech.
Out of a score of 10 for ease of repairability, the iPad 2, 3 and 4, and the iPad mini, came in a at 2, with the mini being nearest the bottom. Reasons for the low score are primarily down to excessive amounts of adhesive used and a high chance of cracking the glass during the disassembly, making repairs extremely difficult.

An der Northwestern University und der University Of Illinois arbeitet man an dehnbaren Batterien, die vor allem dafür da sein sollen, dass man sie problemlos in den Körper implantieren kann. 300-fache Ausdehnung ist den Forschern bislang gelungen ohne dabei die Leistung zu verringern und über drahtloses Wiederaufladen ist es auch nicht so schlimm, dass die Batterie bislang nur 8 bis 9 Stunden hält. Metro: Sonderfaktoren drücken das Ergebnis 2012

Apple-Uhr mit flexiblem Display frühestens in drei Jahren
Im Februar gab es Spekulationen, wonach Apple schon bald eine eigene Uhr auf den Markt bringen wird. Diese «iWatch» sollte gemäss einigen Gerüchten zum Beispiel eine sinnvolle Ergänzung der iOS-Geräte darstellen und aus einem flexiblen Display bestehen. Researchers at Oxford University are working on technology that would let you ride in a self-driving car that's partially controlled by an iPad. According to a report in Clean Technica, the RobotCar UK project is headed up by Professor Paul Newman of Oxford University's Department of Engineering Science.

Twelfth 10.8.3 beta sent to developers with no new changes
Late on Thursday, Apple released yet another build (12D74) of OS X 10.8.3 to developers for testing, though as with recent revisions there appears to be no significant code changes, and no new release notes or immediately-obvious differences. As before, Apple is asking testers to focus on graphics drivers, AirPlay, AirPort, Safari and Game Center. The company has already fixed a strange "file URL" bug that would cause all kinds of applications to spontaneously quit when the phrase "File:" followed by three slash marks was written, but has not yet released 10.8.3 to the public.

Logitech to cull 140 employees under cost cutting measures
Peripheral manufacturer Logitech is looking to lay off five percent of its workforce over the next year, as part of a cost-savings exercise. Evernote yesterday updated its iOS app to version 5.2, adding a new Snippet View for iPad, a new PDF viewer, new formatting options and more. The company detailed the update on its blog, noting that Snippet view allows users to quickly scan their notes. Bug in latest Evernote for iOS update causes the app to crash
Evernote pushed out a big update (version 5.2) yesterday that's causing problems for a growing number of customers. According to Evernote, some users are reporting a bug in the update that causes the app to crash at launch.
We are aware that some users are experiencing crashes on upgrade. We are testing a fix for this issue and will get a new version to you as quickly as possible. In the meantime, uninstalling and reinstalling the app should resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience.

iPad-mini-Verkäufe steigen schneller als erwartet
Aus einer Studie von «NPD DisplaySearch» geht hervor, dass die Verkäufe des iPad mini die Verkäufe des klassischen iPads deutlich stärker beeinträchtigen, als man es im Vorfeld erwartet hatte. Wie die Analysten errechnet haben, haben die Hersteller der 9.7-Zoll-Displays, welche vor allem im iPad verbaut werden, im Januar deutlich weniger Displays ausgeliefert als im Vormonat. Während im Dezember noch 7.4 Millionen 9.7-Zoll-Displays verkauft worden sind, wurden im Januar nur noch 1.3 Millionen Displays verkauft. Die Verkäufe der 7.9-Zoll-Displays, welche vor allem im iPad mini verbaut werden, stiegen hingegen auf über 5 Millionen Einheiten. Ebenfalls stark gestiegen sind die Verkäufe der Displays mit einer Diagonale von 7 Zoll.
Noch im Dezember erwarteten die Analysten von «NPD DisplaySearch», dass Apple im Jahr 2013 40 Millionen iPad mini und 60 Millionen iPads verkaufen wird. Die Januarzahlen haben nun da

An der Duke University hat man zwei Rattenhirne lebender Ratten (eine in Brasilien eine in den USA) miteinander verbunden über das Internet und so gleiche Dinge tun lassen. Es wurde wohl in der Brasilianischen Ratte ein Encoder installiert, die Daten an die US-Ratte geschickt, die dann die gleichen Bewegungen ausgeführt hat, und eine belohnte Aktion in Brasilien führte in den USA zu besserem Verhalten. Das wussten wir nicht, ist auch kein richtiger Hack oder Virus in der Form, dürfte aber dennoch sehr, sehr nervtötend sein. Das geht mit HTML5 mit einem wohl recht einfachen Trick. Der Web Storage Standard erlaubt jeder Seite Daten auf einer lokalen Festplatte abzulegen. Firefox hat daher ein Limit im Browser installiert, bei Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer und Google Chrome ist dies nicht der Fall. Apple verteilte in der Nacht auf heute eine weitere Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.3. Registrierte Entwickler können die neue Beta mit der Build-Nummer «12D74» somit ab sofort laden und testen. Apple gibt in der Beschreibung der neusten Vorabversion an, dass keine Fehler bekannt sind. Die Entwickler sollen sich beim Testen wie bei den vorhergehenden Vorabversionen auch auf WiFi, AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, Grafik-Treiber und Safari konzentrieren.
Vor rund zwei Wochen verteilte Apple die letzte Vorabversion von 10.8.3. Noch immer ist unklar, wann die fertige Version von OS X 10.8.3 für alle Nutzer verfügbar sein wird.

New 10.8.3 beta sent to developers with no new changes
Late on Thursday, Apple released yet another build (12D74) of OS X 10.8.3 to developers for testing, though as with recent revisions there appears to be no significant code changes, and no new release notes or immediately-obvious differences. As before, Apple is asking testers to focus on graphics drivers, AirPlay, AirPort, Safari and Game Center. The company has already fixed a strange "file URL" bug that would cause all kinds of applications to spontaneously quit when the phrase "File:" followed by three slash marks was written, but has not yet released 10.8.3 to the public.

Apple corrects iCloud email glitch, blames spam filters
A bizarre glitch has revealed the existence of "pre-filtering" spam deletion algorithms being used by Apple for its iCloud email. The company acknowledged the issue and has since fixed it, but when an iCloud user would attempt to send an email with the phrase "barely legal teens" in the subject, body or title of some kinds of attachments to another iCloud user, the email would not be delivered. Replies to emails with the phrase, or messages sent to non-iCloud users with the phrase, were successfully sent. Unusually, offending messages were deleted rather than simply flagged as spam.

Über eine Milliarden iTunes U-Downloads
Apple hat gestern bekannt gegeben, dass über Apples-Bildungsportal «iTunes U» bisher eine Milliarde Downloads getätigt worden sind. Über iTunes U stellen derzeit über 1’200 Universitäten und weiterführende Schulen sowie 1’200 vorwiegend amerikanische Grundschulen ihre öffentlichen oder privaten Kurse den Nutzern zur Verfügung. Dank der Zusammenarbeit mit bekannten Hochschulen wie beispielsweise Cambridge oder Oxford ist es auch nicht eingeschriebenen Personen möglich, ausgewählte Kurs dieser Elite-Universitäten mitzuverfolgen und somit das Wissen zu verbessern. Gemäss Apple werden 60 Prozent der Inhalte von Nutzern heruntergeladen, welche nicht in den USA leben. Damit zeigt sich, dass dieses interaktive Angebot weltweiten Anklang findet.

Overzealous spam filter causes never-delivered iCloud emails
Back in November, InfoWorld's Robert Cringely told the story of a Hollywood screenwriter's travails involving his iCloud email account. It appeared that iCloud was unable, or unwilling, to deliver messages with a PDF attachment containing the words "barely legal teen."

Apple now requires executives to hold 3x salary in stock
Despite recommending (and obtaining) a "no" vote on a similar measure, Apple has updated its bylaws and now requires executive officers to hold at least three times their annual salary in AAPL stock, reports the Wall Street Journal. The rule adopted by Apple has significant differences from the proposal put forth at Apple's annual shareholder meeting, but embraces the same principle -- that executives (and in this case non-executive directors as well) need to be personally invested in the companies they manage.

Mac Game of the Week: Runner2 is a gorgeous, trippy journey
The Bit.Trip series of games are always fun examples of mixing music and gameplay, and Bit.Trip Runner was probably my favorite of these. It is a relatively simple game, where a little black box of a guy named Commander Video runs along, jumping up over obstacles and onto platforms in time with the really excellent retro chiptunes as you play. Bit.Trip has been working on a sequel to Runner for a while now, and Runner2 (full title: "Bit.Trip Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien") is now available on Steam for the Mac (as well as PC and Linux).

iFixit Releases Tablet Repairability List, Puts Most Apple Tablets Near the Bottom [iOS Blog]
Today iFixit released its first "Tablet Repairability" list, which ranks some of the more popular tablets by ease of repairability. The majority of Apple's tablets found themselves near the bottom of the list with a rating of 2/10. The list was based on iFixit's findings from their teardown work. Two of the biggest reasons for low repairability scores were excessive adhesive and a high probability of breakage during disassembly. The majority of Apple's iPad family were guilty of one or both of those symptoms. The lone Apple tablet with a good repairability rating was the original iPad with a 6/10, notching in below the Nexus 7 on the list. iFixit releases tablet repairability list, puts Apple and Microsoft on the bottom
Not only has iFixit long been the go-to source for gadget teardowns, it's often seen as an authority on just how repairable a device is post-purchase. So when the outfit released its "Tablet Repairability" list recently, we took notice. The Dell XPS 10 took top marks (9 out of 10) for its color-coded screws and labeled cables, while Apple and Microsoft slumped to the bottom. Solidoodle 3D printing stores set to bring 'upscale fashion shopping' to Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan
Looking for an "upscale fashion shopping experience" in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan or Belarus? Solidoodle's got your back. The company is set to launch 3D printing stores in those areas, featuring its low cost 3D printers and "lifestyle" items created on said devices. The Russian store is set to be the first to open this summer. The company also used its press conference today to announce plans to sell printers in Brazil, Canada, Korea and Japan, as well as a join initiative with Georgia Institute of Technology's Mars Society to test the devices in "harsh environments like Mars" (places like Utah, apparently). Oxford researchers develop iPad-controlled self-driving auto
Advances in robotics enabling a car to "drive itself" have been installed in a Nissan Leaf electric car by researchers at Oxford University. The technology is centered around an iPad mounted in the dashboard that prompts the driver the option to allow the car to take over driving duties for some parts of the trip. The navigation system recognizes its surroundings with an array of cameras and lasers integrated into the body of the vehicle, all linked to a computer in the trunk. Apple refunds epic in-app purchase bill to unaware parents
Parents Greg and Sharon Kitchen, preoccupied by "lots of visitors" in the home, provided the child the family app store password, and in ten minutes, the child purchased 19 high-value in-app purchases for "freemium" game Ninjas versus Zombies at £70 each ($106) plus some smaller ones. According to reports, Apple is calling over $2,500 in in-app purchases made by a five-year old child "unintentional" despite all measures designed to prevent the action either disabled or bypassed, and is completely refunding the monies spent.

Koozoo lets you watch and send live pictures
The free Koozoo app is based on an intriguing idea. It lets you shoot video with your iPhone and share it live with other users. You could conceivably use it to monitor the view of a city, check the line at a favorite restaurant, and so on. The catch is that only San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas are supported so far.
Once you've created a free account, you're ready to browse the online streams. You can look for active cameras, or just watch snippets that have been uploaded. You'll find categories for traffic, parking, food, neighborhoods, etc.
The developers suggest you use your iPhone to grab some quick shots when you can, or place an old iPhone on a WiFi network in a window for use as a live webcam.

Apple Seeds Build 12D74 of OS X Beta 10.8.3 to Developers [Mac Blog]
Apple today seeded build 12D74 of OS X Mountain Lion to developers, marking the twelfth beta iteration of the newest version of Mountain Lion. 10.8.3 was first seeded to developers in November of 2012. Build 12D74 comes two weeks after build 12D68 and features no listed changes. Registered developers can download the update on Apple’s Developer Page.
