Tablet-Markt: Apple weiter vorne, Konkurrenz wächst stark
Das iPad ist nach wie vor das beliebteste Tablet der Welt. Jedes Jahr werden mehr Geräte verkauft, als vorher. Doch im 4. Quartal 2012 sank der Marktanteil zum zweiten Mal in Folge im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. Die Konkurrenz von Samsung und Amazon hat die Fährte aufgenommen — bleibt aber noch abgeschlagen.In einer Übersicht der weltweiten Tablet-Verkäufe unterschiedlicher Hersteller von IDC zeigt sich deutlich, dass Apple mit dem iPad weiter Marktführer bleibt. Daily iPhone App: Puzzle & Dragons combines a grindy RPG with puzzle-y goodness
You'd probably be forgiven for dismissing Puzzle & Dragons on first glance -- I certainly did when I first played the game a little while ago. It's not exactly accessible for those of us who appreciate well-designed software, requiring an Internet connection and using some of the worst features of online social games, including a really grindy progression system and a fairly insistent friends list.

iOS games make 3.5 times more than Android counterparts
Popular App Store tracker App Annie has released its latest report, and the news is good for iOS developers. Not only is iOS revenue up in general (by about 20% year over year), but it's still about three and a half times higher than Android revenue. Both Apple's App Store and Google Play saw big revenue increases in the latter half of last year, as you can see above, but iOS is still clearly much higher, which is definitely one of the reasons developers are so keen to be on Apple's platform in the first place.
It's notable that the top apps on the App Store aren't games at all: Apple and Google are the two top companies with the most downloads on the marketplace, and they don't produce

Apple rolls out firmware update to revive old, troubled batteries
Yesterday, Apple rolled out a trio of firmware updates for MacBook users to help address a rare issue that can cause the batteries to malfunction. The update targets the System Management Controller in the MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, which can run into issues as the computer ages. As Apple explains, "This update addresses a rare issue on some Apple notebooks where a battery that has accumulated more than 1,000 charge cycles may unexpectedly shut down or stop functioning."

iOS 6.1 jailbreak almost ready for prime time
The newly formed evad3rs are close to completing their work on the latest iOS 6.1 jailbreak. The team, made up of @MuscleNerd, @pod2g, @Planetbeing and @pimskeks, have created a website for their jailbreak and are updating it with progress reports.

IDC: Apple leads in tablet shipments, but overall market share slips
According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, tablet shipments reached a record 52.5 million units worldwide in Q4 2012. Apple remains the leader in the tablet market with shipments of 22.9 million units and a 43.6 percent market share. This is a 48 percent year-over-year increase in tablet shipments.
Though Apple is shipping more tablets per quarter, its overall market share is declining slightly from 46.4 percent in Q3 2012 down to the current 43.6 percent. This decline can be attributed to competition from vendors like Samsung, which saw its tablet shipments grow to 7.9 million units last quarter (a whopp

European customers lose the Mac Pro on March 1, maybe earlier

Apple scores trademark for store design
Given that Apple is well known for its iconic, glass-heavy store designs, the fact that the company has been attempting to trademark its look shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Now, Mashable reports that as we approach the three year anniversary of Apple's attempt to trademark the design, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has finally granted the company its request.
"The store features a clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled facade consisting of large, rectangular horizontal panels over the top of the glass front, and two narrower panels stacked on either side of the storefront," reads the trademark application. Givit makes video editing, sharing easier
Every year at Macworld/iWorld I see another great video application for iOS. Last year one of the Best of Show winners was Game Your Video, a nifty app for adding effects to video. While I enjoyed the app, it wasn't very straightforward, and editing wasn't a great experience. Givit, on the other hand, almost nails the simplicity of finding and adding those moments you capture to a cohesive timeline and gives you some worthwhile sharing options (in other words: Not just Facebook). Bowblade is an actual archery bow for your iPhone
There are a lot of accessories to be seen at Macworld 2013, but none caught our eye -- nay, shot an arrow into it -- like the Bowblade. After all, it's kind of hard to miss what looks like a hunting bow being brandished in the middle of a computing convention.
Currently in prototype form, the 4-pound accessory holds an iPhone or iPod touch and uses a mechanism to tap your device's screen when you pull a string with a metal ring attached -- the equivalent of releasing the arrow on an actual bow. The catch is that the mechanism won't work unless the bow is pulled back into its full firing position, a feat that requires a bit of strength. Thus, the accessory's makers are also touting its use as a workout device.

After the U.S. Court of Appeals reversed a proposed sales ban on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus this past October, Apple requested that the ban be reconsidered. The request was a long shot and it didn't swing in Cupertino's favor, as Reuters reports that the ban has been shot down by the court yet again.

iOS 6 gab sich bisher eher sperrig, wenn es um den Jailbreak geht. Zwar gibt es bereits diverse Versuche, die auf unterschiedlichen Gerätegenerationen laufen, mit dem tethered evasi0n-Jailbreak sollen jetzt aber ausnahmslos alle iOS-Geräte möglich sein, und zwar mit iOS 6 und sogar schon iOS 6.1. Das Ganze soll in nur fünf Minuten getan sein, via Mac, PC und Linux laufen und befindet sich momentan im Beta-Status, wobei angeblich nur noch am GUI gefeilt wird. TVCatchup reaches Windows Phone 8 in the UK
British Windows Phone owners won't have to let their TV viewing habits slip while they're on the move. TVCatchup has just posted the promised Windows Phone 8 version of its streaming app, giving locals access to live programming from the BBC, ITV and others. OS-specific optimizations aren't extensive, but they exist -- it's possible to pin a favorite network to the Start screen, and to use voice commands to jump directly to a channel or guide. Pocket for iOS gets native sharing to Facebook, simpler option to delete articles
Good news are in for those who are avid users of Read it Later Pocket on iOS, as the handy application's been updated with some social tools and a few UI improvements. New iOS 6.1 hits 22 percent adoption in just 36 hours
Because Apple lets users upgrade to the latest version of iOS on all compatible devices on the day its released, the adoption rate is naturally higher than on Android -- where carriers generally decide when or if a given device will receive updates on a model-by-model basis, and have a natural incentive to limit the upgradability of a device. Even so, reports that iOS 6.1 -- released on Monday -- is already installed on more than 22 percent of all compatible iOS devices represents the fastest uptake of a system update ever.

Apple has posted a pair of new job listings in the last week that suggest the company will be making further use of plastics in future products, supporting rumors that have circulated about the company producing a lower-cost iPhone that would prominently feature plastic in the body of the device. Forthcoming jailbreak for iOS 6.x gets name, website
A "supergroup" of well-known iOS hackers now called the Evad3rs have launched an official website to promote the team's jailbreak for a wide variety of iOS devices running iOS 6 or 6.1, the latter of which was just released on Monday. The jailbreak should enable most recent iOS devices to be able to further customized and let users install apps unavailable from the official App Store -- but as with any jailbreak, the exploit required for it to work could be used for pirating and malware as well.

Fusion-io shares drop after Apple, Facebook delay SSD orders
SSD maker Fusion-io has cut down its revenue forecast after Apple and Facebook delayed their orders. Apple loses 8.1 percent of shipping tablet marketshare
Although the iPad remains the best-selling tablet, Apple's share of the tablet market dropped 8.1 percent year-over-year during the last quarter -- albeit based on shipments rather than actual sales to end users, according to new iDC numbers. Shipments rose from 15.1 million to 22.9 million, but the company's marketshare dipped from 51.7 percent to 43.6 percent. Stealth OS X update once again blocks use of Java
Apple is once again blocking the use of the Java web plug-in in OS X, reports say. The company has issued a silent update to OS X's anti-malware system which sets the minimum version of Java beyond the current Mac release, Java 7 Update 11. Evernote updates Penultimate, Hello apps for iOS
Evernote has made important upgrades to two of its iOS apps. Penultimate -- the stylus-based notetaking app Evernote acquired last year -- is now free, and can optionally sync with the core Evernote app. Accompanying the change is a new handwriting search feature, which analyzes writing to locate notes, and a redesigned interface. European Mac Pro sales to halt in March, report claims
Apple will stop selling the current-generation Mac Pro in Europe on March 1st, according to 9to5Mac sources. A leaked memo indicates that the computer is "not compliant with Amendment 1 of regulation IEC 60950-1, Second Edition which becomes effective on this date [the 1st]." Resellers will be able to sell any remaining stock after that deadline, but Apple will no longer take vendor orders after February 18th, and must be able to deliver systems before March.

Court quashes Apple attempt to revive Galaxy Nexus ban
The US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected an Apple bid to revive a pretrial ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Reuters reports. The company wanted the court to re-examine an October decision it made on the matter, which had it gone in Apple's direction would've kept the Galaxy Nexus off the market until at least March 2014, the current target date for the trial. The Court of Appeals hasn't issued any explanations or dissenting opinions for today's ruling.

Apple has bought 18 patents from a Canadian firm called Maya-Systems, according to a press release from the latter party. The patents are said to relate to Mayas's "axis-based user interface technology."
