Google Now for iOS? Promo video appears, removed
Users of Android's recent editions have been exposed to Google Now, the "before you know you need it" search tool.
Google Now tries to look ahead at your schedule and physical location to let you quickly access the most relevant results -- traffic for your commute, flight schedules for your trips, local restaurant recommendations and the like. G-Now uses a card metaphor to pop the necessary info right onto your device screen with minimal intervention.
While Siri can handle quite a few of those search chores on iOS, she's not exactly the anticipatory type. SRI's recent Tempo calendar app gives you some of the same halo of savvy around your schedule,

'Google Now' for iOS Promotional Video Leaks on YouTube
Google Now, an Android-only app that aims to provide users with "the right information, at just the right time", is coming to iOS, if a leaked video is to be believed. Google reportedly posted this promotional video to YouTube accidentally. It was quickly removed, but not before an Engadget tipster snatched a copy of it. The video has since been pulled from YouTube and appears to feature the same voice actress as the original Now announcement (which you'll also find after the break for comparison). Supposedly, Now will be accessible in an upcoming iOS app update simply by swiping up from the main screen. Of course, there's always the chance that is an impressive fake or even a canceled project that's only being leaked now. Dropbox for Mac updated to version 2.0
Dropbox has released an overhaul to its Mac client today. Version 2.0 of the client for OS X introduces a new tray feature. Now users can see the most recently shared files right from OS X's menubar and share files directly from the drop-down menu. Users can also accept or reject shared items directly from the drop-down menu.

FAA approves 787 Dreamliner certification plan for testing Boeing's battery fix
The last we heard in the saga of the grounded 787 Dreamliner came last month, when Boeing announced that it had developed a "permanent" fix to the airliner's battery fire issues. Today, the FAA issued its approval of the company's certification plan, allowing Boeing to begin testing its proposed battery improvements. Boeing's fix includes redesigned internal batteries, better insulation and new venting system, and the FAA has given the go-ahead for testing prototype versions of the setup on two aircraft. FCC green lights T-Mobile, MetroPCS merger
Earlier today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allowed T-Mobile's parent company Deutsche Telekom to merge its US wireless division with MetroPCS. The FCC believes that the combination will speed LTE deployment, expand MetroPCS into new markets, and overall build a stronger and faster national telecommunications network. The deal announced in October would see the nation's fourth-largest carrier merging with its fifth-largest. MetroPCS' 9.3 million-strong customer base would be added to T-Mobile's existing 33.2 million customers

Briefly: Prescription Google Glass, Seagate drive shipments
Google has shown it is still developing a version of Glass for wearers of prescription glasses. An photograph on Google+ shows Google employee and wearable computing pioneer Greg Priest-Dorman wearing a version of glass with the frame seen in the Explorer Edition replaced with seemingly normal glasses. Google states the prescription version will not be ready for release at the same time as the Explorer Edition, but apparently will still make an appearance later this year.

FileMaker announces highlights for 2013 Dev Conference
Apple-owned FileMaker has announced some schedule highlights for the 2013 FileMaker Developer Conference, scheduled for August 12th through the 15th at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel. Participants will get to see demonstrations by FileMaker and other exhibitors, and network with fellow users of the software. Survey: Interest in iPad mini is growing
TechBargains.com is a deals site that I follow, and it recently shared the results of a survey that demonstrate that Apple's iPad mini a winner, and suggest that its popularity will continue to grow.
TechBargains polled its readers, and found that interest in the smaller iPad has nearly doubled since the tablet was announced last October, with 33 percent of respondents saying that they plan to buy the next iteration of the iPad mini, compared to 18 percent last year.

Dropbox 2.0 for Mac adds new drop-down interface
Cloud storage service Dropbox has released a significant update of its Mac client, bringing the software up to v2.0. The core change is the addition of a new drop-down interface, as accessed from the Menu Bar. Study: Only 16% of users will retry a malfunctioning app
Developers -- first impressions are important when you are selling an app. According to a new study by Compuware that was reported by TechCrunch, you only have one chance, maybe two, to get a customer to become a regular user of your app. If glitches force a customer to try your app a third or fourth time, you risk losing 84 percent of your user base.
Compuware queried 3,534 respondents in the US, UK, France, Germany, India and Japan about their app habits. The results show that the majority (79 percent) of users will try an app again if it fails the first time. On

Smaller A5 chip in Apple TV still 32nm Samsung design
The new, smaller A5 chip in recent Apple TVs is actually still a Samsung design, and still built using a 32nm process, says semiconductor analysis firm Chipworks. Initial examination suggested that the processor had switched to 28nm, which might also have pointed to TSMC as the responsible manufacturer. IDC Predicts Android Tablet Shipments Will Overtake iPad Shipments in 2013
According to a new report from research firm IDC, tablets running Google's Android operating system are poised to overtake the iPad during the course of 2013. A surge of low cost Android-based tablets has prompted IDC to forecast worldwide tablet shipments of 190.9 million, an increase from its previous estimate of 172.4 million. 48.8% of those are expected to run Google's operating system, giving Android the plurality of the tablet marketshare by the end of the year. In comparison, Apple is expected to retain just 46% of the tablet market, while Windows and Windows RT will make up 4.7% of overall tablet shipments. Acer upgrades C7 Chromebook with more battery life and memory for $280
When we got our hands on Acer's initial C7 Chromebook, our chief gripe was its frankly disappointing 4-hour battery life. We now know that Acer had its ear to the ground after launch. It's rolling out a new trim level, the C710-2055, that mends the short runtime and beyond. The new edition carries a 6-cell battery that should give it six hours of battery life -- still not as good as the 6.5 hours of Samsung's ARM-based Chromebook, but it's at least in the ballpark. Google settles Street View Wi-Fi data collection suit in US
Google has agreed to settle a lawsuit concerning its collection of data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks across the US. Curiosity rover finds conditions on Mars that could have supported living microbes

OS X 10.8.3 Build 12D78 Seeded to Developers [Mac Blog]
One week after the previous seed, Apple today released a new build of OS X 10.8.3 to developers. The latest version, which arrives as build 12D78, represents the 13th developer seed since Apple began developer testing last November. As with previous builds, Apple is asking developers to focus their testing on AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, Graphics Drivers, and Safari. We had previously heard that Apple was seeding the prior 12D76 build to employees, suggesting that a public release might be imminent, but it seems that Apple is continuing to make final tweaks to the operating system update.

US Senators introduce bill to allow phone unlocking
A group of US Senators, including Al Franken and members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, have introduced a bill that would restore rights to unlock phones after a contract has expired. A5 Chip in Tweaked Apple TV Still Manufactured by Samsung
Earlier this week, we opened up the newly tweaked Apple TV to find a remarkably small A5 chip inside rather than an A5X as had been suspected from the device's software posted by Apple over a month ago. Since that time, we've been talking with chip experts at Chipworks and Silicon-IP about the possibilities and have confirmed that, unlike in the previous Apple TV, this even smaller A5 does not use a stacked chip design involving the DRAM. We were unable to to identify the chip to the left of the A5 in our unit due to illegible markings, but Chipworks has cracked open another unit and discovered Elpida DRAM in that location.

Jefferies cuts Apple stock price target to $420

Analyse zeigt Produktionseinbruch bei Apple-Zulieferer
Die Analysten der Citigroup gehen in einer neuen Analyse davon aus, dass Apple die Umsatzziele für das zweite Fiskalquartal nicht erfüllen könnte. Dabei stützen sich die Analysten auf die Daten des «Apple Monitor», welcher von Topeka Capital erhoben wird. Mit dem «Apple Monitor» werden verschiedene Daten der wichtigsten Apple-Zulieferer zusammengetragen, womit man einen besseren Einblick in die Produktion der Apple-Produkte erhalten will.
Gemäss Brian White von Topeka Capital ist der Apple Monitor im Februar um 31 Prozent gefallen. Normalerweise sinke der Indikator im gleichen Zeitraum um lediglich 8 Prozent. Auch wenn man Sondereffekte wie das chinesische Neujahr herausrechnet, so kommt man immer noch auf ein Minus von ‘nur’ 15 Prozent. Pixelmator has released a preview of a new text feature in Pixelmator 2.2 Blueberry in a short video. The new feature is called 'Convert Text into Shape' and allows users to define any typed text as a shape. Users can then make stylistic changes to entire paragraphs, words, or individual letters. Die Experten von der englischen Konsumentenzeitschrift «Which?» wollten für einen Test herausfinden, welches Windows-8-Ultrabook die längste Akkulaufzeit aufweist. Um die Geräte vergleichen zu können, nutzten die Tester das Surfen im Internet und betrachteten zudem Videos, welche auf der Festplatte gespeichert waren. Um die Ergebnisse in einem grösseren Zusammenhang betrachten zu können, gesellten sich zu den 18 Windows-8-Ultrabooks ein 13-Zoll MacBook Pro mit Retina Display sowie ein Samsung «Series 3»-Chromebook.
Im reinen Internet-Betrieb am besten abgeschnitten im Which?-Test hat das Retina MacBook Pro von Apple — dies mit einer Akkulaufzeit von fast 6 Stunden und 30 Minuten. Use Keyboard Maestro to quit and relaunch apps before and after using Skype

Mario muß Level um Level untätig zusehen, wie ihn die eifrige Heldin versucht zu retten, während er von Donkey Kong in den nächsten Level geschleppt wird. A woman from Oklahoma who calls herself "Sweet Brown" became famous over a short but colorful interview she gave to a local TV and radio station following an apartment fire, best known for the signature line from it, "ain't nobody got time for that." The line has subsequently become an Internet "meme," or widely-quoted idea or sentiment. Deutlicher Produktionsrückgang bei Apple-Zulieferern im Februar

Report: iPhone dominates mobile web video watching
Yet another real-world usage study has emerged that would seem to contradict data based on shipments of smartphones. In a report issued by web video network provider Ooyala, iOS users account for two-thirds (67 percent) of mobile traffic for watching videos on smartphones, with Android devices making up only one-third (33 percent). This comes in seeming defiance of statistics from IDC that say Android devices have 68 percent share of smartphone shipments, with iOS only 19 percent of the market.

Just when we had gotten used to the idea that the PS Vita's price drop in Japan would not be followed by a similar one here, Joystiq reports many Sony stores are offering the 3G bundle at a discount. UK law enforcement investigating HPs acquisition of Autonomy
According to regulatory documents filed Monday, UK law enforcement has opened up an investigation into HP's claims that it was badly misled when it acquired software developer Autonomy. Google zeigt Google Glass Apps: New York Times, Gmail, Path, Skitch und Evernote

Google hat auf der SXSW stolz Google Glass vorgeführt und auch ein paar der Apps gezeigt, die gerade in der Entwicklung sind. Unter anderem haben Page und Co. auch mit der New York Times eine App entwickelt: einfach nach einer News fragen und die NYT-App liefert Schlagzeile, Autor und die Zeit, zu der die News gepostet wurde. Per Tap bekommt man dann den ganzen Artikel vorgelesen. Außerdem testen sie ein Feature in dem eine Eilmeldung automatisch beim Erscheinen als Nachricht erscheinen. Auch die GMail App war zu sehen: der Versender einer Nachricht wird mit Bild und Namen eingeblendet, antworten lässt sich dann per Diktat an die Daten

Daily iPhone App: 7 Little Words for Kids is a well-made word game for youngsters
I'm a big fan of 7 Little Words, a word game that's different from the rest, in that you need to simply figure out vocabulary clues and match up syllables rather than playing Scrabble yet again or lining up letters. Now, the app's creator has returned with a version for children called (surprise) 7 Little Words for Kids.
As you'd imagine, the Kids' version is a bit more colorful and easier than the serene and challenging original, but it offers the same very addictive and rewarding gameplay of being given clues for just seven little words, and then assembling a collection of syllables up to form them. The K

Rdio on iPhone now shows which friends are listening, web streaming hits seven countries
Listen enough to Rdio on the desktop and you'll know your friends' taste in music when they're fellow subscribers. As of a fresh update to the iOS app, you'll also appreciate any musical kinship while on the road. iPhone users receive an overhauled playback view that shows just which friends have listened to that favorite album or playlist. Apple suppliers had a very tough February
February is usually not a great month for the companies that supply Apple with its iOS and Mac device parts (Chinese New Year usually falls right in that month, and production in China always take a big downturn as people celebrate there). But this particular past February was especially bad, according to reports: Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White says that the suppliers for Apple that he tracks saw their sales data fall down 31 percent over the past month, as compared to the usual 8 percent drop in past years. That makes for the worst February on record for Apple's suppliers, which may or may not soon have an impact on Apple.

Apple under pressure for new dividends, repatriation of cash
Despite moves to buy back shares in itself and the creation of a dividend program, Apple adds money to its enormous cash reserve far faster than it can distribute it -- a problem many companies would like to have, but one that is actually quite thorny for Apple. Wall Street appears to be orchestrating an effort -- or acting on insider information -- to put pressure on the company to make some kind of announcement for a future, additional dispersal of cash to investors. Meanwhile, governments have increased their calls for the "repatriation" of foreign-held profits.

Gmail's mobile web interface now looks just like the app
I use Gmail pretty much exclusively for my incoming email, with three or four different accounts that redirect to my always online, easily accessible, and seemingly bottomless inbox. I thought the app the company recently released with a brand new look was pretty impressive, and apparently so did the web designers at Google: They have just switched the mobile website to make it look just like the official Gmail app.
Unfortunately, the changes haven't proliferated to my corner of the web, but the screenshots of the new design look great -- nice and clean, with just a few important bits of color to keep your incoming messages straight

The advent of internet radio let many of us tune into music we never would have heard without packing our bags for a trip. Google just took some time at SXSW to show off Google Glass, and it's taken the lid off some apps that are currently in the works. As it turns out, Page and Co. have been working with the New York Times to build an app. Just ask for some news and the Glass will deliver a headline, a byline and an accompanying image.
