Report: Customer retention is a major factor for the App Store
Yes, the conclusion of this report might be a little obvious to anyone who's been following the App Store closely, but it's true: Flurry's latest writeup of App Store stats suggests that keeping users playing a game or using an app can be a major factor in that app's success. Flurry filed the apps it follows into a set of four categories, based on star systems. Black Holes feature low amounts of monthly users, and low amounts of retention over a couple 30-day periods. Shooting Stars have put a lot of users together quickly, with high user numbers but relatively low retention. In a move that'll likely have event planners and meeting organizers around the world leaping for joy, Gmail has just announced that you can directly add .ics calendar attachments to your Google Calendar without having to download and import them manually. iPads at Idaho elementary's 'iSchool' pilot program
Idaho's Paul Elementary School has shared a video praising the iPads and networking that iSchool Campus set up for them. Students, faculty and staff all received iPads and after two-and-a-half months, the teachers and staff are seeing great results.
Principal Colleen Johnson notes, among other things, the financial benefits of running iPads. "We've saved about $20,000 per month making copies and on paper," she says, noting also that the iPads are used to take notes and practice skills, reducing the use of consumables.

Verizon BlackBerry Z10 launching March 28th, pre-orders begin March 14th

Smaller A5 Chip From Tweaked Apple TV Contains Only One CPU Core, Revamped Analog Circuitry
For the past few days, we've been following the story of the smaller A5 chip found inside of the recently tweaked Apple TV, seeking to understand what changes Apple has made in order to shrink the chip to roughly half the size of the previous A5 chip. Twitter to Release Standalone 'Twitter Music' iOS App [iOS Blog]
CNET is reporting that Twitter has acquired a music discovery service and plans to release a standalone music app. The company reportedly acquired We Are Hunted, "one of the world's leading music discovery services" according to the company's website. iPhone takes second place in Indian smartphone market
The iPhone is now the second-most popular smartphone in India, having achieved a 15.6 percent share in Q4, according to IDC data reported by CNN. The shift is attributed to Apple finally accommodating the "mom-and-pop" stores that dominate the Indian electronics market, instead of depending solely on carriers and major resellers. Samsung remained on top of the local smartphone market in Q4 at 38.8 percent, while Sony was in third at 9.4 percent. CNN notes that in the previous quarter, the iPhone wasn't even in the top five.

A big update from Zite fixes a lot of user complaints
I was an early admirer of Zite, the free iOS app that learns what you're interested in and creates a magazine just for you. As Zite got more popular, some changes came in that drove some users wild.
I thought the biggest offenses were the addition of CNN News (CNN owns Zite) and the What's Popular on Zite sections. Many users, myself included, felt that forcing content was unwarranted and unwanted in an app that prided itself for being personalized.

A U.S. District Judge has ordered Apple CEO Tim Cook to sit for a deposition in the antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department against the company over alleged e-book price-fixing, reports Reuters. Los geht´s: der Kindle Fire HD 8.9 ist ab heute auch in Deutschland zu haben. Das kleinere Modell mit 16 GB Speicher kostet 269 Euro, für 32 GB werden 299 Euro fällig. Da er in den USA so gut läuft und auch die Vorbestellungen unter anderem in Japan wohl über den Erwartungen waren, wird er nun auch in den USA billiger angeboten. A group of Russian car enthusiasts announced on their blog (translated via Red Hot Russia) that they have modified a car to be controlled remotely by an iPad. The group used an iPad 3 and created an app to control the car via a host of added electronic components to control the acceleration, steering, braking and gear shifting in addition to seeing the road from the perspective of the car. While doing tests outside, I froze like a dog. Besides, the tablet screen quickly becomes wet and fingers numb and lose sensitivity, making tapping on the screen more difficult. Apple Stores in France may not make employees work late
The High Court of Paris put the brakes on late night work by Apple Store employees in France. According to a report in the AFP, Apple is banned from having employees work between the hours of 9:00 pm and 6:00 am. The ban is the result of a complaint filed by several French labor unions which claim Apple's overnight work policy violated French labor laws.
In France, companies can only require overnight work when the shifts are necessary for the economic viability of the company or offer a social service. Samsung tops Apple in 2012 US phone ad spending
Samsung spent $401 million in US TV, Internet, print, and billboard advertising for phones during 2012, surpassing HTC and even Apple, according to Kantar Media data obtained by the Wall Street Journal. The figure represents a quintupling of its budget for 2011, which amounted to just $78 million. By contrast, Apple's budget went from $253 million to $333 million, and HTC's budget actually shrank from $124 million to $46 million.

France fines Apple 10K euros for demanding overnight work
Apple France must pay labor unions 10,000 in fines for regularly forcing retail employees to work after 9PM, a Parisian court has ruled. A teardown of the Pebble smartwatch found it to be a fairly unrepairable device, though its expected longevity is a saving grace. Wie erwartet ist das Innenleben eher unreparierbar, schon beim Öffnen geht das Display kaputt, alle Innereien sind auf einem Board konzentriert: Accelerometer, die 120MHz Cortex-M3 MCU und der Bluetooth-Chip. Apple verteilt vierzehnte OS-X-10.8.3-Vorabversion an Entwickler
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute eine weitere Vorabversion des nächsten Minor-Updates für OS X Mountain Lion an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Die mittlerweile vierzehnte Beta von OS X 10.8.3 trägt die Build-Nummer 12D78 und soll weiterhin keine bekannten Fehler mehr enthalten. Die Entwickler sollen sich auch beim neuen Build vor allem auf die Bereiche AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, Grafik-Treiber und Safari fokussieren.
Die erste Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.3 verteilte Apple im vergangenen November. Seit Ende Januar werden fast wöchentlich neue Beta-Versionen verteilt.
Dass es etwas länger dauert, bis das dritte Minor-Update einer Major-OS-X-Version veröffentlicht wird, ist übrigens nichts neues. Readdle expanded its portfolio of excellent apps today with a free version of its popular Calendars app. The free version will replace the paid version of Calendars by Readdle, which is now known as Calendars+.

Ooyala: iPhone-Nutzer schauen mehr Web-Videos als Android-Nutzer
Wie das Online-Video-Portal «Ooyala» in einer neuen Erhebung festgestellt hat, nutzen iPhone-Nutzer die Dienste des Video-Portals öfter als Nutzer eines Android-Smartphones. Obwohl das iPhone lediglich über einen Marktanteil von 19 Prozent verfügt, werden 67 Prozent der mobilen Video-Aufrufe bei Ooyala von iPhones aus getätigt. Die restlichen 33 Prozent der Video-Aufrufe, welche von einem mobilen Gerät stammen, kommen demnach von Android-Smartphones. In der Statistik nicht enthalten sind die Video-Aufrufe, welche von Windows Phones getätigt werden. Welche Gründe für die hohe Verbreitung der iPhones ausschlaggebend sind, konnte in der Erhebung nicht herausgefunden werden. Swisscom LTE/4G: 6 weitere Orte erhalten Hochgeschwindigkeitsnetz
Die Swisscom baut sein LTE/4G-Netz laufend aus. Das Ende 2012 gestartete Netz wurde erst Anfang November um die Städte Bellinzona und Olten erweitert, nun folgen die nächsten sechs Orte. Wie die Swisscom via Twitter informiert, kommen ab sofort auch die Ortschaften Aarau, Aigle, Giubiasco, Neuenburg, Sursee und Uster in den Genuss der vierten Mobilfunk-Generation «LTE».
Die Swisscom hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, bis Ende Jahr 70 Prozent der Schweizer Bevölkerung mit 4G versorgen zu können. Auf der Webseite der Swisscom bietet der Mobilfunkanbieter eine Übersichts-Karte, auf der ersichtlich ist, wo in der Schweiz welche Mobilfunktechnologie angeboten wird. Kommt «Google Now» bald auch für iOS?
Google hat gestern für kurze Zeit ein Video auf YouTube bereitgestellt gehabt, welches darauf hindeutet, dass der Konzern die Android-App «Google Now» bald auch für das iPhone und das iPad anbieten wird. Die App «Google Now» soll dem Nutzer dabei helfen, die tägliche Informationsflut so aufzubereiten, damit man die Informationen nur dann bekommt, wenn man sie tatsächlich benötigt. Beispielsweise zeigt einem die App mögliche Verkehrs-Staus auf dem Weg zur Arbeit an, wenn man seinen Arbeitsort im Kalender eingetragen hat. Der Nutzer kann zudem wie bei Apples «Passbook» Boarding Pässe für den nächsten Flug speichern.
Der Umstand, dass das Video auf YouTube bereits wieder gelöscht worden ist, deutet darauf hin, dass das Video versehentlich heraufgeladen worden sein könnte. Andererseits könnte es sich auch um eine Marketingmassnahme von Google handeln.

Google Now könnte schon bald auf dem iPad und iPhone landen: Auf YouTube ist ein Promo-Video aufgetaucht, das Now für iOS vorstellt. Wir haben Google um einen Kommentar gebeten, aber noch hüllt sich der Internetgigant in Schweigen, und auch das Video ist schon wieder von YouTube verschwunden. Es könnte also durchaus ein Fake sein, allerdings - wovon ihr euch nach dem Break überzeugen könnt - ein sehr gut gemachter, da sowohl Stil als auch Stimme der Sprecherin perfekt mit der ersten Video-Ankündigung von Google Now übereinstimmen.

Report: interest in iPad mini, next-gen model increasing
Just as happened with the original release of the iPad, more conservative tech buyers (who don't fit the "early adopter" profile) had only moderate interest in an iPad mini -- but unlike most electronics, interest in the scaled-down version of the iPad has increased significantly since its introduction, according to a report from deal site TechBargains. When it did a survey just prior to the iPad Mini's release, only 18 percent planned to buy it -- now, interest has nearly doubled to 33 percent. Apple on Tuesday updated both its Apple Store buying app and (in a "silent" update) Maps application with expanded options. Apple continues to improve Maps for several cities around the world
Apple has updated a number of cities with new or expanded Flyover support, updated 3D buildings, and turn-by-turn navigation, according to The Loop. The updates have been quietly rolling out over the last few months. Since the updates are pushed via Apple's maps servers they do not require updates to iOS.

National Archives donates 1.2 million digital objects to Digital Public Library of America pilot project
The new Digital Public Library of America (or DPLA) will be kicking off its first big pilot project at the Boston Public Library next month, and it's now gotten a big shot in the arm courtesy of the US National Archives. It announced today that it's donating some 1.2 million digital objects to the effort, which range from founding documents to Civil War photos to World War II posters. FTC: your mobile and social media ads still need disclosures*
We've all seen online banner ads with lengthy disclosures and other warnings that what we see isn't necessarily what we'll get. Think that the tight spaces of a smartphone screen or a 140-character tweet are exempt from the rules? Think again: the FTC just updated its guidelines to make clear that any "constrained" ads on mobile platforms or social networks still have to reveal their true purposes and show realistic figures. Z2Live picks up former AAA execs, rebrands as Z2
Z2Live is the company behind some really big freemium hits on the iOS App Store, including Battle Nations and Trade Nations. The company has today announced that it's rebranding itself as Z2, instead, dropping the "Live" and premiering a new brand identity on its new website.

Microsoft issues updates for Office 2011, 2008, Entourage
Microsoft has updated its flagship Mac product, Microsoft Office for Mac in both the 2011 and 2008 editions, along with a separate update for Entourage Web Services for Office 2008. The updates fix critical security issues and also help improve overall security, including "fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code," according to the release notes. In addition, the 2011 Office update delivers several bug fixes, and the Entourage update now syncs information with Exchange Server.

The Blockheads changes the game with a major update
The Blockheads is an excellent game by New Zealand developer David Frampton, also known as Majic Jungle Software. Steve Jobs to be Immortalized in Japanese Manga Series [Mac Blog]
An upcoming manga comic book series from Japanese artist Mari Yamazaki will feature the life story of Steve Jobs, as told by Walter Isaacson in his best selling biography of the former Apple CEO. According to Pocket-lint, the officially licensed series will appear in a "female comic" magazine called Kiss, published by Kodansha, Japan's largest manga publisher.
