Verizon to update the Droid 4 with Jelly Bean 4.1 starting tomorrow

It's always a good day when we can report on older handsets getting updated with some fresher software. If you happen to have bought the Droid 4 when it came out on Verizon last year, then today's your lucky today: the carrier has confirmed it will begin updating the phone to Android Jelly Bean (4.1) starting tomorrow. As always, this is more of a rollout than anything else, so try and stay patient if your phone doesn't immediately show an update prompt. And as ever, do hit us back and let us know how the upgrade goes.Filed under:

Big Brother Camera Security for iOS is back after App Store ban

Big Brother Camera Security is an intriguing free app that lets you know if someone is snooping around your iPhone. When you install the app you pick a passcode for your phone, and give it your email address. You'll get a confirming email with a code to validate it's you setting up the app, and once confirmation is complete you're ready to go. Once the app has been launched, anyone who picks up your iPhone is asked to enter the passcode. If they fail to enter the correct passcode, the camera takes their picture using the front-facing camera. They get another try, and the app takes another photo. Big Brother Camera Security instantly emails you both the photo and the location of your phone. It's a bit like

Funny or Die end-runs Kutcher, makes own Jobs movie

Online comedy site Funny or Die will become the first to have a full-length Steve Jobs movie hit the mainstream market, when they debut their own parody film of Jobs' life, called iSteve, on April 15. The Funny or Die film, intended to poke fun at the competing bioflicks of Jobs -- the completed-but-delayed Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher and the big-budget Sony Pictures effort being written by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) -- stars Justin Long, who played "the Mac" in Apple's "Mac vs. PC" ads.

Editorial: Tech is a flock of starlings

You've seen the videos -- thousands of starlings flocking in the sky to swirl and surge across wide, cloudless backdrops. The beauty of their coordinated motion is stunning. The phenomenon is expressively called murmuration. There might be purpose to starling choreographies, but if so, it is movement without destination. The flock shapes and re-shapes itself continuously. Doing so makes preying on the flock difficult, but beyond that, the motivation of these group flights is ineffable. If ornithologists told us that starlings were imitating the group behavior endemic to tech-adoption culture, it would be easy to see the similarity. The s

Ask iLounge: Watching Rented Movies on Multiple Devices

Hacker sentenced to 41 months for exploiting AT&T iPad security flaw

Hacker Andrew "Weev" Auernheimer was found guilty last year of spoofing iPad user IDs to gain access to an AT&T email database, and he's now been sentenced to 41 months in prison. In addition to the nearly three and a half years behind bars, Auernheimer also faces another three years of supervised release, and restitution payments of $73,000 to AT&T. To begin setting up Siri to read your books aloud to you, go to Settings > General, then scroll down to Accessibility. Review: Audio-Technica ATH-ANC33iS QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling In-Ear Headphone

Two years ago, we reviewed Audio-Technica’s ATH-ANC23, a pair of hybrid earbud/canalphones with 12.5mm drivers inside. Pioneered by Sony some years ago, the hybrid earbud/canalphone design is as large as a classic earbud, resting most of its housing outside of your ear canal, but channels sound through silicone rubber tips that provide some passive noise isolation. Audio-Technica has augmented the earbuds with a battery-powered active…

Playing an actual game with Oculus Rift: hands-on with Valve's Team Fortress 2 'VR Mode'

Valve's free-to-play first-person shooter, Team Fortress 2, is getting Oculus Rift support with its VR Mode update in the coming weeks. Think of it as a large beta test -- Oculus Rift dev kits ship to Kickstarter backers and Team Fortress 2 players on PC can snag a free update, thus feeding Valve valuable feedback on how people play TF2 with VR. The only thing left to know is perhaps the most important: how does it play? We found out just that on a recent visit to Valve's Bellevue, Washington offices, where Valve programmer Joe Ludwig lead us through a hands-on demo of the game's VR Mode update, replete with a near-final build of the Oculus Rift dev kit (not quite the one shipping

Geocentric App Developers Compare Apple's MapKit and Google Maps SDK

FastCompany has released a detailed comparison of Apple's MapKit and Google Maps SDK after interviewing the developers behind two popular geocentric apps. Lee Armstrong (Plane Finder) and Bryce McKinley (Tube Tamer), who are experienced with both mapping platforms, criticized Apple for focusing overly much on flashy features over base functionality, but lauded the company for MapKit's performance, low cost, and overlay features. Both developers noted that Google had superior location finding services, satellite imagery, and 3D support, pointing out that Apple's satellite imagery was often blurry, dark, and lacking in contrast. The other issue is the way roads are drawn in the 'Hybrid' view. The Google SDK and, in fact, the Apple

Apple Adjusts Warranty Coverage in Australia to Comply With Consumer Protections Law

Australian law requires that sellers of products offer warranties for "a reasonable period from date of delivery until the failure becomes apparent". This has been interpreted as two-years for computers. Apple's standard warranty on all products runs for one-year, while AppleCare extends coverage to three years on Macs. The Sydney Morning Herald writes of the warranty requirements, including that Apple Retail Store employees and authorized resellers have been notified of a change in how Apple handles warranty claims in the country. On Friday, Apple's Australian retail store staff and authorised Apple resellers were notified about a change to Apple's internal policy on how i

Triggering AppleScripts from Calendar Alerts in Mountain Lion

AppleScripts are great tools for increasing your daily productivity. They're even better when they can be set to run unattended, at night, on weekends, or during downtime. In Lion, iCal included a handy option for attaching a script to a calendar event. Just create an event, add a Run Script alarm, point it to the desired script and you're good to go. Things changed in Mountain Lion, though. Presumably for security reasons, the Run Script alarm option was removed from the Calendar app. Despite its removal, however, there are still some ways you can trigger scripts from Calendar events.

What constitutes a reasonable length has been left flexible, but the country's Competition and Consumer Commission recommends that for a product like an expensive TV, the period can be up to two years.

Verizon's lead programming negotiator, Terry Denson, has told the Wall Street Journal that a more logical usage-based approach may come to FiOS TV. «Why iPhone» — Apple mit neuer Kampagne für das iPhone

Apple hat im Verlaufe der letzten Woche die iPhone-Webseite in den USA aktualisiert. Auf der neuen Seite «Why iPhone» vergleicht Apple zum ersten Mal das iPhone indirekt mit den Smartphones der Konkurrenz. Die Headlines auf der neuen «Why iPhone»-Seite — wie «There’s iPhone. And then there’s everything else.»

Apple loses 'Ifone' appeal case in Mexico

Apple has lost its appeal case and Mexico over the naming rights to the iPhone in the country, according to the Wall Street Journal. As we reported in November, in 2009 Apple asked Ifone, a Mexican telecommunications company which registered its name in 2003, to change its name to avoid confusion. Sharp will miss deadline for $60M Qualcomm investment, is getting an extension instead

Sharp already received the first half of that windfall at the tail end of 2012, whereas the remaining $60 million wasn't going to distributed until "sufficient progress has been made." If that last bit sounds vague, Sharp was actually being held to some clear terms: it had until March 29th to finalize specifications for new power-saving screens that will be used in both tablets and smartphones, and which Qualcomm will help produce. Sharp also needed to generate an operating profit of 100 billion yen ($1.05 billion)

In any case, Microsoft seems to be taking a more direct approach going forward: the company posted a brief table on its site, explaining when it will end support for Windows Phone 8 and 7.5. In short, each OS gets a total of 18 months of support, and that per

Neuer A5-Chip in Apple TV braucht massiv weniger Strom
