Apple Releases Security Update 2013-001 for Snow Leopard and Lion [Mac Blog]
Apple today released Security Update 2013-001 for Snow Leopard, Snow Leopard Server and Lion users, on the heels of the release of OS X 10.8.3. Daily iPhone App: Ridiculous Fishing is ridiculously good
Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing is finally out on the App Store today, after a long and rough development cycle that included a well-publicized battle against a clone. Mozilla unveils Firefox OS Simulator 3.0 with Push to Device, rotation simulation

OS X 10.8.3, Safari 6.0.3, Security Update 2013-001 go live
Following an unusually long development cycle, Apple has finally released the completed version of OS X 10.8.3. The software is mostly a maintenance update, for instance fixing problems with stuttering sound on 2011 iMacs, Logic Pro freezing when using some plugins, and apps crashing when opening file URLs. It makes several enhancements as well however, such as adding Safari 6.0.3 and upgraded Boot Camp features. The latter now supports Windows 8, and can run on Macs with 3TB hard drives.

Redbox Instant by Verizon goes live in United States
After beta testing for nearly four months, the combined Verizon and Redbox streaming media effort Redbox Instant is available to the general public. For $8 a month, or $9 a month for blu-ray kiosk rentals the service offers four rental days a month, in addition to computer and portable device viewing of the rotating selections on the online movie service.

Apple issues SMC update to MacBook Pro with Retina display, fixes fan issue
In addition to the OS X 10.8.3 update, Apple has also issued an update for the retina MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update v1.1 update addresses two major issues owners have been complaining about, including a rare issue where users may experience slow frame rates when playing graphics-intensive games on the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3, Security Update 2013-001 now available
Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and the first security update of 2013. The update includes a number of good improvements including:
The ability to redeem iTunes gift cards in the Mac App Store using the built-in camera on a Mac
Boot Camp support for installing Windows 8 and Macs with a 3 TB hard drive
Various fixes for issues that cause a URL to quit apps unexpectedly, that might cause Logic Pro to become unresponsive and stuttering audio on 2011 iMacs.
The update also includes Safari 6.0.3.

China Mobile plans $6.7 billion in LTE upgrades
China Mobile has announced plans to spend $6.7 billion in developing its 4G LTE network during 2013, Reuters says. The carrier adds that it expects to have licenses by the end of the year; Reuters indicates that the company is aiming explicitly at supporting the iPhone, which is incompatible with its 3G network. Mobile uses a proprietary 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, which has so far led Apple to favor Mobile's rivals, China Unicom and China Telecom.

BlackBerry to extend Enterprise Service 10 to iOS, Android
According to BlackBerry, the company is planning on offering a solution to secure and divide work and personal data on both iOS-powered devices, as well as tablets and smartphones running Android. The offering could help BlackBerry recover from the last few years of plummeting sales, and supplement the income from its new BlackBerry 10 platform and pair of new smartphones. First Looks: Amzer Silicone Skin Jelly Case for iPhone 5
We've reviewed versions for the iPad and iPad mini; now, here's Amzer's Silicone Skin Jelly Case for iPhone 5 ($10). Duke Nukem 2 on its way to iOS
Duke Nukem 3D is already available to play on the App Store now, and just in time for the sequel's 20th anniversary, Duke Nukem 2 is coming to the App Store soon. Interceptor Entertainment (the folks behind the recent Rise of the Triad reboot announcement) has teamed up with 3D Realms to bring the second, side-scrolling Duke Nukem to iOS, as you can see in the reveal trailer, up now. They're working on a version that will contain all of the original's 32 levels, plus some new artwork and music, as well as touchscreen support (of course), and leaderboards.
Interceptor says the game is due out on iOS in April for a price of $1.99. We'll look for it then.

Tim Cook ordered to testify in ebook case
According to Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook will have to sit for a deposition in the US government's case against Apple regarding ebook price fixing.
U.S. District Judge Denise Cote decided in favor of the Justice Department's request to have Cook on the stand. He will be made available for four hours on the day he's in the courtroom. In its request, the Justice Department argued that Cook likely had conversations with then-CEO Steve Jobs about ebooks.
Apple was opposed to having Cook take the stand, saying that his testimony would be "cumulative and duplicative," but Judge Cote apparently did not agree.

NVIDIA opted out of PlayStation 4, cites Sony not offering enough money
Having produced the graphics chips that powered both the original Xbox and the PlayStation 3, it was a surprise to see NVIDIA's name left out of Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal event last month. Evidence points to new Netherlands Apple Store
It looks like Haarlem, The Netherlands will soon have the luxury of a new Apple Store along Grote Houtstraat, a prime retail location in a popular pedestrian walkway in the city.
ifoAppleStore reports that construction has begun on the ground floor of what appears to be the beginnings of an Apple Store. The space is said to comprise of approximately 8,000 square-feet. 6,800 of that will be public retail space, while the rest will be back-of-house.
The Netherlands currently has an Apple Store in Amsterdam (as pictured). Another is under construction in The Hague, although it's believed Haarlem's store could be completed first.

EU group issues recommendations that may impact app stores
The Article 29 working group -- composed data protection authorities from across the European Union -- has issued a new set of recommendations which may have a significant impact on app developers. Under the new guidelines, it's proposed that developers should ask for consent for each kind of data an app wants to access, including not only common items like location, contacts, payment info, and social network logins, but browsing history and other content. China Mobile Announces Big LTE Push, No Progress on iPhone Negotiations
The Wall Street Journal reports that China Mobile -- the largest cellular carrier in the world -- is planning to spend $7 billion on its LTE network this year, paving the way for the company to support the iPhone 5. Mac 101: How to backup your Google Reader account
Google is sunsetting its Reader service in July and you may be on the hunt for a new RSS service and client to use. Before you fire up that new client, you should take a few minutes to backup your current Google Reader feeds as you may need to import them into your new app. Importing your feeds will be a lot faster than manually re-subscribing to each one. Gravidi wants to put clickable hotspots on videos for iOS
At SXSW I found a kiosk showing off a beta of the app Gravidi. It allows producers to add a layer of interactivity to videos by embedding hotspots in the video, and adding other activity around it. For users, it provides a way to learn more about moments in a video, or people or objects in that video as it plays. The app is currently in beta, but they are showing it off around SXSW featuring a number of bands and their music videos.
While clickable video has been tried before (I remember adding hotspots to QuickTime video a decade ago), Gravidi is offering a nicely designed experience for users and tools for producers on the back end. Samsung gibt mehr aus für Werbung als Apple und der Rest der Branche
Kanatar Media hat in einer neuen Studie die Marketing-Budgets der verschiedenen Smartphone-Hersteller genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Wie die Studie zeigt, dürfte die Dominanz von Apple und Samsung auf dem Smartphone-Markt nicht nur von den soliden Geräten herrühren. Auch von den grossen Werbebudgets dürfte dieser Erfolg abhängig sein: Im Jahr 2012 gab Samsung in den USA 401 Millionen US-Dollar für Smartphone-Werbung aus. Die Marketing-Ausgaben von Samsung sind um mehr als das Fünffache im Vergleich zum Vorjahr angestiegen. Im Jahr 2011 betrug Samsungs Marketing-Budget in den USA noch 78 Millionen US-Dollar. Mit diesem starken Ausgaben-Wachstum überholte Samsung auch Apple. Apple gab im Jahr 2012 333 Millionen US-Dollar für iPhone-Werbung aus, was gegenüber dem Vorjahr einem Zuwachs 33 Prozent entspricht.

Adobe shuts off BrowserLab testing service
Adobe is putting an end to its free BrowserLab service effective immediately, the company has announced. The service simplified testing websites across multiple desktop browsers. Adobe says, though, that the market has shifted towards smartphones and tablets, causing BrowserLab use to drop during the past year. Apple offering iMacs with optional VESA mount adapters
Apple has begun offering iMacs with an optional VESA mount adapter. The new BTO option was first noticed by Macworld UK. Users who buy an iMac on Apple's online store can order the iMac with the VESA mount adapter instead of the standard foot stand for an additional US$40.
The pre-installed adapters cannot be swapped out for the iMac's standard foot stand later. Apple is currently not selling the VESA mount adapters individually for use with previously purchased slimline iMacs. TSMC may be starting early preparations for A7 processor
TSMC is expected to "tape out" an Apple A7 processor with a 20nm process this month, then move into risk production in May or June, claim industry sources for DigiTimes. The sources say that TSMC is expanding its production capacity at Tainan Science Park in Taiwan with a total investment of $16.87 billion, and plans to use some of the extra capacity to build A7s. The people add, however, that the company would only start shipping A7s commercially in the first quarter of 2014.

Apple has added new versions of the iMac, with built-in VESA mount adapters, to its online store. The systems are identical in specifications to their counterparts released last year, except that they can now be mounted to a wall or ceiling in the same style as an HDTV. Digitimes reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will "tape out" the design for an A7 system-on-a-chip built on a 20-nanometer process this month. US regional iPhone carriers ban together to ease unlocking rules
Smaller wireless carriers in several US regional and rural areas are backing bills in Congress that would allow consumers to unlock mobile phones and tablets without a carriers' permission, according to Bloomberg. Neu: iMac mit VESA Mount Adapter
Apple bot für iMacs und Cinema/Thunderbolt Displays ein VESA-Kit an, mit welchem man die Geräte z.B. an einer VESA-Wandhalterung befestigen konnte. Die im vergangenen November/Dezember eingeführten «schlanken» iMacs waren aber bisher nicht mit dem VESA Mount Adapter kompatibel. CERN's latest update to its god particle project is that the new particle that it was able to pick up is behaving "more and more like a Higgs boson." HTC One mit Lieferverzug, Verkauf in Deutschland nach Plan

Phil Schiller lässt sich über Android aus
In einem Gespräch mit dem Wall Street Journal zeigte sich Apples Marketing-Chef Philip Schiller nicht sonderlich beeindruckt vom anstehenden Launch des Samsung Galaxy S IV (wird heute Abend vorgestellt). Zwar anerkennt Schiller, dass bereits vom Samsung Galaxy S III ein grosser Druck auf Apple ausging und auch das Galaxy S IV Funktionen bieten wird, welche den Nutzern gefallen könnten. Der hochrangige Apple-Manager schränkt aber ein, dass Android-Smartphones nicht dasselbe Erlebnis bieten würden, wie es ein iPhone tue. Zum Lizenzkonzept von Google meinte Schiller, dass er Android als kostenlosen Ersatz ansieht.

Netflix snags global streaming rights for The Killing season 3, after it airs in the US
AMC's detective series The Killing had an inconsistent first couple of seasons, but it is surprisingly returning for a third. Feedly promises 'seamless' transition after Google Reader to its own backend
If you (like many of us at Engadget) are in a state of shock facing the end of Google Reader this summer, there may be an easy replacement. Samsung's ITC complaint against Apple pushed to May 31
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has once again delayed a full panel ruling on Samsung's complaint that Apple violated patents related to the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. The preliminary ruling in September by a single judge held Apple blameless of violation, with the full ITC judgement being the final word on the subject. Google to shut down Google Reader, Snapseed for Mac among others
Fans of Google Reader are going into mourning, as Google has announced that it is shutting down the RSS reader service on July 1. As part of its now annual spring cleaning initiative, Google says service usage has declined. It urges people to find an alternative in the three and a half months before Google Reader sees the sunset. Users can export their data using Google Checkout.

I'm always on the lookout for a new travel app -- I've used TripIt a little bit and I don't mind it, but it hasn't really grabbed me a must-use way just yet. So when TripCase sent word that they'd just hit version 3.0 with a new design and some new features, I decided to give the app a quick look.

Report: carrier files in iOS could be misused for malware
An Israeli security firm has published a proof-of-concept pointing a weak link in Apple's otherwise very tight security for its mobile platform iOS -- mobileconfig files. The profiles, which are often installed by carriers or enterprise device management solutions, can be downloaded from unencrypted websites, reports Skycure Security. If users were tricked (through social engineering or redirected websites) into installing a malicious profile, it would configure system-level settings to allow attackers access to several key iOS services.
