D-Link ships its AC1200 802.11ac WiFi router / thermos doppelganger
True, D-Link's AC1200 may better resemble the container keeping your coffee hot at work than a traditional WiFi router, but it remains a rare take on networking design that's frankly appreciated. We're glad to report, then, that it's shipping to stores. Shopster is a new app from Quadion Technologies that'll help you avoid that dreaded moment when you realize that you forgot to get that critical ingredient for tonight's dinner. Rather than a static to-do list with date reminders, Shopster uses geo-fencing as a trigger to alert you about items on your shopping list. Zinio magazine app heads to Windows Phone 8 as a Lumia exclusive

Pop-up Gmail compose now default whether you like it or not

TweetDeck for Mac gets column, user search filters
Twitter has released a new Mac version of TweetDeck, 2.7.1. The main improvement comes in the form of filters, which can be applied to columns and search results. This includes filtering by media, retweets, and included/excluded terms in the case of content, or verified status and list membership in terms of users.

Apple updates Find My Friends with new UI, more in-depth location controls
We haven't seen many changes to Apple's location-based Find My Friends app since it debuted on iOS 5 more than a year ago. Apple today rolled out a new advertising theme for the iPad on its website, highlighting a number of reasons why people love their iPads. Apple may pick Innolux, drop Samsung for iPad mini panels
Apple is taking on Innolux and Century Display as panel suppliers for the next-generation iPad mini, claims David Hsieh, NPD DisplaySearch's VP for the greater China region. Rego for iPhone is a fun way to record your travels
Years ago I enjoyed recording my travels with Gowalla. That disappeared and so I jumped on Stamped, as it had a minor feature that let me collect a list of places I'd like to visit. It, too, went to the great App Store in the sky.
Now I'm using Rego for iPhone by Makalu Interactive. It's a simple app designed to let you note the places you've been as well as spots you hope to visit someday. Unlike Gowalla and Stamped, the social aspect of Rego is totally optional. In fact, it's turned off by default.

YouTube API will allow video games to more easily stream in-game content

Google names 10 patents in open patent pledge to developers
Perhaps trying to appease the US Federal Trade Commission and other governmental agencies concerned about patent abuse, Google is "taking a stand on open source and patents" and pledging to not sue "any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked." Ten patents initially identified are related to MapReduce, a computing algorithm designed to efficiently deal with large-scale data processing.

Sony speakers combine NFC and WiFi / Bluetooth for minimal streaming effort
The whole syncing thing proving too much effort for your music listening habits? Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8 adds minor upgrades, several fixes
Apple has released Final Cut Pro X 10.0.8, an update to its video editing suite. The code adds several minor features, such as support for Sony's XAVC codec up to 4K resolution, and the ability to display ProRes Log C files from ARRI ALEXA cameras with standard Rec. 709 color and contrast levels. Time-reverse clips can now render in the background, and editors can use key commands for adjusting Clip Appearance settings in the timeline, and view reel number metadata in a file's timecode track.

Daily iPad App: Magicka arrives on iOS with Wizards of the Square Tablet
Magicka is a long-running game series from Swedish developer Paradox Interactive that the company has recently decided to go big on. In addition to an upcoming multiplayer spinoff, Paradox has released this version for iOS today, hoping to bring some of the PC game's magic to Apple's touchscreen platform. And in general, they're successful. While it's not perfect, Magicka for iOS does recreate some of the desktop series' wackiness and creativity.

Rogers' more reasonable unlocking policy takes effect
See where an appropriate amount of public pressure will get you? As promised, Rogers' long-due rational unlocking policy is in full effect. You can now pay $50 to have Rogers unlock a device if it's either fully paid off or has been on the network for 90 days, making it easier to take your phone on a vacation -- or to a rival carrier, if you also pony up any relevant cancellation fees. New hack allegedly lets AT&T iPhone 5 on T-Mobile LTE
A new hack allows a current-generation AT&T iPhone 5 to operate on the 1700MHz band of T-Mobile's network, reports claim. The method involves a custom carrier file, and demands an unlocked A1428 model of the phone, whether with AT&T or officially unlocked by Apple. Find My Friends has received a small, but important update. Version 2.1 of Apple's friend-location software introduces a new UI to search and set location-based notifications. Google pledges not to sue open-source devs and users
Google has always been pretty firm in its stance that "open systems win." Now its going so far as to publicly pledge that it will "not sue any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked." The Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge, as the company is calling it, is the latest effort to back open-source software which Mountain View contends is one of the driving sources of innovation in cloud-computing and the internet. Sunrise is a free iPhone app designed to make using Google Calendar easier, and through an innovative user interface that makes good use of gestures it accomplishes that goal. Back in June 2011, Apple launched Final Cut Pro X, a complete reworking of the company's video editing software aimed at professional users, but the new software was met with significant criticism over missing features. Professional users in particular were upset over what seemed to be a "dumbing down" of Final Cut Pro in order to reach more mainstream users. Jennifer Schneidereit is one of three developers who worked with the legendary game developers Rare on Kinect Sports. That same group of three later created their own company, Nyamyam games.

Facebook schaltet VoIP im Messenger für Deutschland frei

In den USA, Kanada und England läuft der Versuch schon eine ganze Weile, jetzt geht es auch bei uns: telefonieren im Facebook-Messanger. Das neue Feature ist ab sofort auch in Frankreich, Italien und Spanien verfügbar. iOS-Nutzer können laut Facebook die Funktion auch in der regulären App nutzen, das funktioniert bei uns aktuell noch nicht. Der Verbindungsaufbau in der Messenger-App geht schnell und problemlos vonstatten, egal, ob man sich im WLAN oder aber im Mobilfunknetz befindet. Auch die Sprachqualität geht in Ordnung, die Verzögerung ist aber deutlich spürbar.

Für Unternehmen bietet Google schon länger das kostenpflichtige Maps Engine an, ein Dienst zum Erstellen von eigenen Karten. Jetzt erhalten auch alle anderen Zugriff: Google hat eine weniger umfangreiche, aber dafür kostenlose Variante namens Maps Engine Lite als Beta veröffentlicht, zu der ihr hier eine sehr gründliche Anleitung findet. Es gibt sie allerdings nur Englisch, so wie auch Maps Engine Lite bisher nur als englische Version verfügbar ist. Ihr habt bereits Karten in My Maps gebastelt? Ein Entwickler beschwerte sich mit einem ausführlichen Artikel bei «The Verge», dass iCloud nicht wie von Steve Jobs an der Keynote versprochen funktionieren würde. An der Keynote vom 6. Juni 2011 kündigte Steve Jobs «iCloud» als ein Produkt an, bei welchem alles automatisch geschieht und wozu man als Benutzer nichts neues erlernen müsse. Für die Entwickler sehe das etwas anders aus. Bei iCloud würde es sich um den «schlimmsten Albtraum eines Entwicklers» handeln, wie ein Entwickler zitiert wird.
Den Entwicklern bereit vor allem die Synchronisation der «Core Data» Mühe. Bei Core-Data handelt es sich um die Datenbanken, in welche die Daten der iCloud kompatiblen Applikationen gespeichert werden. Wie sich Apples Einnahmen und Ausnahmen verteilen
In einer in der letzten Woche veröffentlichten Studie hat Asymco-Analyst Horace Dediu bereits die Entwicklung von iTunes zum «Umsatz-Biest» nachgezeichnet. Trotz des respektablen Gewinns der iTunes-Sparte sind diese Gewinne klein im Vergleich zu dem, was der gesamte Apple-Konzern an Gewinnen generiert. Beispielsweise machen die Einnahmen von iTunes rund 7 Prozent der Gesamteinnahmen von Apple aus. Für die Vermarktung der iTunes-Inhalte fallen allerdings 10 Prozent der Verkaufskosten von Apple an. Schlussendlich trägt die iTunes-Sparte lediglich 4 Prozent zu Apples gesamten Gewinn bei.

iPad mini: Angeblicher Produktionsrückgang könnte neues Modell ankündigen
Gerüchten aus Asien zufolge wird Apple die Produktion des iPad mini im zweiten Quartal diesen Jahres deutlich zurückfahren. Eine solche Entwicklung könnte auf sinkende Verkaufszahlen zurückzuführen sein. Denkbar ist allerdings auch, dass Apple damit die Produktion des Nachfolgemodells vorbereiten möchte.

EE switches on 4G in 13 more areas, plans another 30 by the end of June

Die Nacht als Steve Jobs zu Apple zurückkehrte
Nachdem Steve Jobs im Jahr 1985 sein Amt bei Apple niedergelegt hatte, gründete er das Unternehmen NeXT und später die Animationsschmiede Pixar. Im Jahr 1996, nach der Übernahme von NeXT durch Apple, kehrte Steve Jobs zu seinem früheren Arbeitgeber zurück und übernahm dort nach kurzer Zeit den Posten des (i)CEOs.
Der ehemalige Mac OS Evangelist Tim Holmes hat nun auf Flickr einige Fotos veröffentlicht, welche von einem Meeting in Apples Town Hall stammen. Das Meeting fand kurz vor Weihnachten im Jahr 1996 statt. An diesem Meeting war Steve Jobs zum ersten Mal wieder im Hauptsitz von Apple zu sehen. Fisker puts US workers on furlough to conserve cash

ComScore: Apple.com now 8th most popular website
Industry analyst ComScore has decided to include mobile web visits as well as desktop-and-notebook visits to its ranking of the web's most popular websites, causing a significant shift upwards in popularity for all websites but particularly for Apple.com. The change gave Apple a 54 percent gain in visitors, enough to move it from the 11th most popular website in the world to 8th place. Thousands of Amazon S3 data stores left unsecured due to misconfiguration
Will Vandevanter, of Help Net Security, made a rather disturbing discovery: thousands of Amazon S3 data "buckets" were improperly configured and left exposed to prying eyes. US funding bill slips in 'cyber-espionage' IT purchase check

In this episode of "Stupid Siri Tricks," I make my iOS devices control a remote Mac. How remote? Well, it should work anywhere on the planet (or off, if you happen to be on the International Space Station) with Wi-Fi or a cellular data connection. Former Mac OS Evangelist Tim Holmes has posted a set of previously-unpublished pictures on photo-sharing service Flickr documenting the evening event at which Steve Jobs was formally introduced as returning to Apple, late on Friday, December 20, 1996. The set of photos was taken with an Apple QuickTake camera, which Holmes notes "Jobs killed within the year." BBC News app hits version 2.0
The BBC has updated their BBC News iOS app to version 2.0. The much needed update fixes a number of annoying bug issues, including an issue where readers would sometimes see duplicate stories next to each other. As for the new features of BBC News 2.0, the app now has a number of UI tweaks to make discovering and viewing news easier. Users will see larger images with stories and now have the ability to pull the news feed down to refresh it - a welcome change since users are used to refreshing feeds in other apps in a similar manner.
The 2.0 update also sees a new portrait mode for the iPad app in the ability to edit, organize, or remove news categories. The full release
