Fehler in Apple Data Detectors führt zum Absturz von vielen Programmen
Alle Programme, die in OS X die Apple Data Detectors unterstützen, können in der OS X 10.8.2 durch die Eingabe einer einfachen Zeichenkette sofort zum Absturz gebracht werden. Sobald in ein Textfeld die Zeichenkette File:/// eingegeben wird stürzt das betreffende Programm sofort ab. Großer Hackerangriff auf Twitter - 250.000 Konten betroffen
Twitter hat am heutigen Mittag bekanntgegeben, dass man Opfer eines großen Hackerangriff geworden ist. Bis zu 250.000 Konten sollen von dem Angriff betroffen sein, potentiell sind Benutzername, Passwort und E-Mail-Adresse des Nutzers erbeutet worden. Apple kauft Maya-Patente – Basis für neuen Finder in OS X und iOS
Apple hat Patente von Maya-Systems gekauft. Sie beziehen sich auf ein achsenbasiertes Nutzerinterface. Dies könnte die Verwaltung von Dokumenten und Mediendateien auf den Macs und den iOS-Geräten komplett umkrempeln.
Wie Maya-Systems gestern Abend (via CNS) bekanntgab, hat Apple im dritten Quartal 2012 einige Patente gekauft, die eine “innovative, achsen-basierte Technologie eines Nutzerinterfaces” von Maya-Systems beinhalten.

Samsung auf Rang 2: Apple größter Handy-Hersteller der USA
Gemessen an den verkauften Mobiltelefonen auf dem US-Markt musste Samsung im 4. Quartal 2012 seit Jahren erstmalig den Titel des größten Herstellers an Apple abtreten. Mit den folgend eingebundenen Videos werfen wir einen Blick zurück ins Jahr 1967 und lassen uns vom damaligen CBS-Nachrichtensprecher Walter Cronkite erklären, wie man sich die Technologie der Zukunft, genauer gesagt die des Jahres 2001, vorstellt. Tim Berners-Lee: Gegen Apps und für Root-Zugriff
Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, bekannt als Erfinder des World Wide Web, trat auf im Rahmen der Linux.conf.au 2013, einer Linux-Konferenz in Canberra. Er sprach sich gegen native Apps aus und forderte Root-Zugriff auf allen Geräten.Volle Administrator-Rechte, denn das bedeutet Root, seien notwendig, um sicherzustellen, dass das Gerät nur für einen selbst arbeite — nicht für jemand anderes. Berners-Lee sieht auch ein, dass solch umfassende Zugriffsrechte auf allen Geräten, vor allem Smartphones und Tablets, ein gewisses Sicherheitsrisiko birgt.

CES 2013: Tran fährt Tram – Das letzte Video aus Las Vegas
Die CES hinterlässt ihre Spuren. In unserem Falle hat das dafür gesorgt, dass wir ab einem bestimmten Punkt nur noch sehr sinnlose Gespräche geführt und so ziemlich über alles gelacht haben. Glücklicherweise lief dabei manchmal auch die Kamera.

Anleitung: SHSH sichern mit TinyUmbrella
Mit dem ersten Untethered Jailbreak von iOS 6.1 vor der Tür gibt es ein paar wichtige Aufgaben, die man noch erledigen sollte bevor man sich an einen Jailbreak wagt. Künftig in zwei Varianten erhältlich [Update 2]OmniGroup hat heute einen Ausblick auf OmniFocus 2 für den Mac präsentiert. Die fertige Anwendung soll "im Laufe des Jahres" auf den Markt kommen. Apple TV may get HBO Go in first half of 2013
Could it finally happen? Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is "in negotiations" with HBO to bring HBO Go to the Apple TV in app form during the first half of 2013. As our fearless leader Victor Agreda pointed out upon hearing the news, "Of course they're in negotiations -- they're in them all the time with everyone, and have been forever." (That's paraphrased, but you get the gist.)

Other World Computing is a popular manufacturer and seller of a big line of Apple-friendly hardware, and as usual they have a commanding presence at Macworld/iWorld 2013. Among the new products the company announced this year are the NuGuard KX rugged cases for iPhone and an upcoming 3.5-inch SSD under the Viper label that will provide high capacity and incredible speed.

Chromebook 101: How to make your new toy more Apple-y
Steve is a deeply bad influence. He started the trend, which prompted me to order my own Chromebook (although I had been waiting to pull the trigger for several weeks). Slowly this US$250 MacBook-wannabe has been infiltrating TUAW households.
It's great for kids. It's a unit you don't mind taking on non-work trips. It's undemanding.
But it's not quite the MacBook experience, especially for our Apple-trained fingers. The problem is that we want the Control key next to the space bar, not waaaaaay off to the left.

Jam for iOS hopes to be 'Instagram for music'
Most of the apps on display in Macworld/iWorld 2013's "Appalooza" annex are of the productivity variety, but that doesn't mean there isn't some fun stuff to be found. One that caught my eye was Jam from Australian developer DreamWalk Mobile.
Launched two weeks ago on the App Store, it's a free music-creation app for iPhone and iPod touch with a unique hook: You sing -- not even especially well, even -- and the app auto-tunes you and creates an original backing track, then mixes it all down into something you can share on Facebook.

Get a USB 3.0 hub plus Gigabit Ethernet with Kanex's DualRole

ZipaClip gives you secure video sharing on iOS
ZipaClip is an interesting approach to privacy for videos that you don't want to share through social media services.
The free app encrypts video and sends it to a secure server. If the recipient has the app, they can download it from the cloud. It's good for family sharing or when you need security in a business environment. You can also use the app to send private text messages.
Free is good, but there is some fine print. If you want to send clips longer than 30 seconds, you have to buy additional time. It ranges from 20 minutes of storage (US$0.99) to 120 minutes ($5.99). The free version allows you to send unlimited 30-second clips until you exceed 30 minutes of storage.

Apple overtakes Samsung as top US mobile phone vendor
Strategy Analytics' latest mobile phone report is out, and Apple's iPhone is the winner here in the US, taking the top spot for the first time in its history. Apple displaced Samsung, which has held the title as America's most popular mobile phone brand since 2008.
According to Strategy Analytics, Apple shipped 17.7 million iPhones in the quarter and grabbed a 34 percent market share. Estimates for Samsung suggest the carrier shipped 16.8 million phones for a 32.3 percent market share. Samsung Super Bowl ad teases Apple
As noted by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Samsung spends almost $12 billion a year to promote its brand. A chunk of this money is going to clever ads like the one below that is a lead up to the company's bigger Super Bowl Sunday spot.
Apple fans will likely see the irony in the video below, which pokes fun at the NFL and its tight licensing of its trademarks. Guess Samsung's disdain for intellectual property is evident in its commercials as well as real life.

Path reaches a settlement with the FTC over COPPA violations
Path is paying handsomely for allowing minors under the age of 13 years old to sign up for its service. According to a statement released Friday, Path has settled with the FTC over an alleged violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protections Act (COPPA) involving 3,000 underage accounts. The social network has agreed to pay an US$8,000 fine. It will also establish a privacy program and submit to regular privacy assessments for the next 20 years.

XMG Studios announces Evil Empire, Hero and one more at Macworld
Just as they were last year, XMG Studios is on the floor of Macworld/iWorld 2013 in San Francisco. XMG has three new games to talk about that aren't playable just yet, but should be released this year.
XMG's Lydia Schaele told us about a big title called Evil Empire. It's darker and more stylistic than older XMG games like Cows vs. Aliens and last year's Ghostbusters title.

Here's an iPhone app that's great for kids just learning about music. Dr. Smith's Music Factory, (free) listens as you hum or whistle a tune and then composes music around it. You can also touch icons if you don't want to rely on your ability to carry a tune.
Here's how it works. You select a mood. So far, Sweet and Funny are supported. You hum, whistle, tap on the screen or randomly shake the phone to create notes. After a few seconds, the song is composed. If you save it, you can then share it with friends or family via mail, MMS, Facebook or Twitter.

Double Robotics shows off its iPad-equipped robot
We heard about Double Robotics and their plan to make an iPad-topped robot last year, but the real thing is running around the floor of Macworld/iWorld 2013 this week, and I think it's the coolest thing I've seen at the show. Company founder David Cann told me that Double was originally working on a toy accessory for iOS, when he and his co-founder discovered that they'd have to do a lot of traveling to Asia to set up manufacturing and production lines. They had the idea then of making a telepresence robot with an iOS device, and from that idea, the Double was eventually born.

Omni Group's Ken Case on OmniFocus 2 and the origins of the app
One of the true joys of attending Macworld is getting to talk to some of the best developers in the world. Among the best of the best in the Apple world is Ken Case, CEO of The Omni Group. Today the company officially announced OmniFocus 2, the next generation of its flagship task management / GTD (Getting Things Done) app. On Thursday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Ken to discuss the upgraded app and see it in action.

Telekinesis Kyle is an upcoming platformer with psychic power
There aren't all that many games on the expo floor at Macworld/iWorld 2013 this year, unfortunately. It seems like a lot of game developers stayed home, as most of the apps on display are utility or productivity apps. There are a few games out there in Appalooza (as the app section of the show floor is called), and Telekinesis Kyle is one that stood out to us. It's an upcoming app from a company called Vellum Interactive, and it's based on a cool idea: You play as a kid who can not only jump around on various platforms, but he can also move various physics-enabled objects through the game's environments.
The game is still in early production, so the graphics and the levels aren't at all finalized (and in fact, there was a bug in the scrolling mechanic in

Daylight Viewfinder keeps the sun from spoiling your photo taking
I've been pretty successful thus far in my ongoing quest to find the most unusual accessories here at Macworld/iWorld 2013, what with products like the BowBlade catching my eye. Today I ran across a little doodad called the Daylight Viewfinder, which is an optical viewfinder -- the kind you'll find on DSLR cameras and the like -- that sticks to your iPhone or iPod touch screen and lets you see what you're shooting even if the sun's washing out your display.

MMT offers a mobile monitor for your Mac or iPad
This is the first Macworld for MMT, Mobile Monitor Technologies, and the company is offering a slightly different twist on portable USB monitors. Each is wrapped in brushed aluminum, and each has a nice build quality with what appeared to be an outstanding screen. Another week, another Java exploit: Computerworld notes that Oracle has once again updated the Java VM for all platforms to fend off a prospective exploit. The update is technically the scheduled February critical updates release, but the delivery was pushed up.

Airturn is a Bluetooth-enabled music page turner for iPad
We heard about the Airturn when it first released a few years ago, and the company is here at Macworld/iWorld 2013 this week in San Francisco, showing off both the older two pedal unit, and the brand new four pedal unit you can see above. Na geht doch: Panasonic schreibt wieder Gewinne

Im Quartal 4 2012 hat der Elektronikkonzern Panasonic einen Gewinn von 61,4 Mrd. Yen verbuchen können, was in etwa 492 Mio. Euro sind. Da darf man schon mal eine Flasche Sekt für aufmachen, weil ein bisschen überrascht haben, dürften diese Zahlen in Zeiten des Darbens der japanischen Riesen (Sharp, Sony etc.) durchaus alle Beteiligten. Gut, es ist kein Gewinn, der in die Firmenannalen eingehen wird. Stimmt uns aber alle zufrieden, dass es auch mal Gutes zu berichten gibt.

Es ist erstaunlich, dass es sie noch gibt. Die gute alte MiniDisc. 20 Jahre hat das System durchgehalten, obwohl es gefühlt in mindestens den letzten 10 davon eher ein völliges Schattendasein geführt hat. Im März läuft dann wohl bei Sony der letzte MiniDisc Player vom Band, denn eine bestimmte Komponente wird einfach nicht mehr produziert. Andere Hersteller wie Onkyo werden wohl etwas weiter machen. Damit wäre auch das Ende der proprietären Sony Formate gekommen, halt, in der PS Vita haben sie überlebt.

Schräg und resistent: Pentax Optio WG-3 und WG-10 Hands-On

Auf der CP+ in Yokohama vorgestellt, ist die WG-3 eine 16-Megapixel CMOS-Sensor Kamera mit 3-Zoll LCD, 4x, f/2-4.9 Linse und schafft bis zu 14 Meter Wassertiefe. Mit den beiden Superzoom Kameras, die Nikon auf der CP+ vorgestellt hat, macht es mal wieder einen Schritt auf das Objekt zu für die Mittelklassekameras. Beide kommen mit BSI CMOS Sensoren. Die ca. 450$ teure P520 schafft 18,1 Megapixel mit einem 42-fach Zoom (24-1.000mm), die 280$ teure L820 hat einen 30-fach Zoom (22,5-675mm). Wenig überraschend: Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS und 115 IS im Hands-On
Keine Frage, die IXUS aka PowerShot Serie von Canon hat sich im Design nicht verändert. Die 330 HS kommt mit einem 12,1 CMOS Sensor, die 115 IS hat einen 16 Megapixel CCD Sensor. Der Zoom der 330 HS ist von 8 auf 10-fach gestiegen, aber auch in der PowerShot UI hat sich ansonsten nicht viel getan. It appears that the company is wrapping up the week with an outage: Outlook.com appears to be down, and many users are reporting that the Office 365 subscription service is unavailable as well. NPD: Apple tops Q4 US smartphone sales, Samsung a strong second place

Bloomberg: Apple, HBO adding HBO Go to Apple TV
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple and HBO are in talks to bring HBO Go, the company's app- and web-based Video On Demand (VOD) service, to the Apple TV. Existing HBO subscribers would then be able to access the HBO catalog of more than 600 hours of material on the Apple TV device without having to use AirPlay to "stream" it from their iPad or iPhone as is currently required. It is possible that HBO may even allow non-subscribers some form of limited "sample" access to the service, akin to how the BBC's Global iPlayer works.

Audio chip maker Audience posts $3.1M profit, beats street
Previous Apple supplier Audience has reported quarterly revenue well above Wall Street's estimates, after it diversified its suppliers beyond the Cupertino manufacturer. Shares climbed 24 percent in after-hours trading after the company reported that it was expecting revenue between $43 and $46 million in the March quarter, trouncing analyst estimates of $31.8 million. Quarterly profit was $3.1 million, up more than $8 million from 2011's $5.6 million loss.

Apple products continue to drive Softbank mobile profits
Japanese mobile phone operator Softbank doubled its profits in the third quarter largely on the strength of Apple's iPhone and iPad. Net income climbed to 65.9 billion yen ($724 million) in the quarter that ended in December, up from 32.8 billion yen ($357.5 billion) a year ago. Sales grew 7.1 percent to 923.7 billion yen ($10.1 billion). The company rose 2.7 percent to close at 3,260 yen ($35.53) before the earnings announcement.
