Apple requests immediate damages retrial; Samsung stalls
As expected, Apple has filed a motion with Judge Lucy Koh in the Northern District of California to request a April 3 case management conference in order to expedite the ordered repeat of the damages phase of the first smartphone patent trial between Apple and Samsung. A competitive motion from Samsung was filed after Apple's, with the Korean manufacturer requesting a partial final ruling which Samsung will then appeal -- and based on that, it is requesting a stay of the damages retrial indefinitely.

Illinois town buys 600 MacBook Airs for high school students
The small suburban village of Barrington IL, just northwest of Chicago, has approved a plan to equip all of its high school students with MacBook Air models over the course of the next school year. After researching other options, a committee of teachers and administrators recommended the Air as the best option for the intended age group. Though the board has not yet finalized the funding required, it gave its approval to the request and said it would find the money for the initiative, which will cover some 600 students.

DevJuice: WWDC '13 alert service now accepting customers
Last year, if you didn't have a personal Apple rep calling you at 5 AM to help you register for WWDC, you may have relied on a service like WWDC Alerts.
Tokens developer Oisin Prendiville decided to go a little more entrepreneurial this year. Offering an alternative to WWDC Alerts, his site will limit subscribers by charging a nominal €1 fee to sign up.
This way, Prendiville writes, the site won't be "overloaded with requests that would result in potential notification delays like with http://wwdcalerts.com last year."
Prendiville is happy to be bribed. "It's not entirely democratic," he writes. "Queue skipping is allowed by paying more!"

Herschel telescope detects some of the youngest stars ever seen
Astronomers at the Herschel space observatory have discovered some of the youngest stars ever seen, NASA reports. With observations from the Herschel telescope as well as the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) in Chile, researchers were able to detect 15 protostars -- the biggest group of such young stars in a single star-forming region. Bring on the cat GIFs! Google adds animated filter to image search

Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch Reportedly Joining Apple
CNBC's Jon Fortt has just issued a Tweet reporting that Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch is leaving the company to join Apple. A second Tweet from CNBC claims that Lynch's departure from Adobe is coming this week. It is not yet clear what role Lynch will be taking on Apple, but Fortt presumably has a full report coming soon. Epic Rap Battles of History gets an iOS app
You've probably seen the YouTube series Epic Rap Battles of History before -- they're the wild guys behind the (slightly not safe for work) Steve Jobs and Bill Gates rap battle, where the two creators, Peter Shukoff and Lloyd Ahlquist, face off as the two titans of the computer industry in a catchy rap song. Shukoff and Ahlquist have been working hard on the video series, which is now in season 2, and has portrayed fights such as Obama vs. Mitt Romney, Adam vs. Eve, and Hitler vs. Darth Vader to the tune of more than a billion YouTube views so far.

Facebook alums plan WiFi network to support 68,500 fans at 49ers' stadium
The 49ers may not have won the Super Bowl, but at least fans will have something to look forward to during the 2014 season. The brand new Santa Clara Stadium, which boasts 68,500 seats and an estimated $1.2 billion construction cost, is expected to pack the country's most powerful WiFi network. The new installation is being overseen by two Facebook IT alums, and is expected to feature roughly one terabit of overall capacity. According to an Ars Technica feature, every attendee will be able to connect to the network simultaneously, without bandwidth restrictions.

Belkin's Thunderstorm case cranks your iPad to 11
In my office I tend to rock out to a 300-watt stereo system. When I go to wash dishes and have to use my iPad's native speaker, well, there's no comparison. Belkin's Thunderstorm case won't crank up to the level of a really large stereo, but it is loud enough to punch through very noisy environments with ease. At CES I tried one on the show floor where the sound level (according to my iPhone) was close to 100 decibels and the Thunderstorm was not only loud enough to hear, the audio actually sounded good. Sapphire ships Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition
Component maker Sapphire has officially launched the Mac Edition of its Radeon HD 7950 video card. The add-on includes 3GB of GDDR5 memory, and is said to boost game framerates by as much as 200 percent or more, and general benchmark performance by about 30 percent. Apple releases Apple TV software update 5.2.1
Apple has released the Apple TV 5.2.1 software update. The update addresses a number of security issues on the Apple TV, including one in which a local user may be able to execute unsigned code. In a security document, Apple describes the issue: "A state management issue existed in the handling of Mach-O executable files with overlapping segments. This issue was addressed by refusing to load an executable with overlapping segments."

Hulu redesigns Apple TV app with new layout, features
Hulu has launched a new version of its Apple TV app for Hulu Plus subscribers. The app uses a new interface, for example adding TV, Movies, Kids, and Latino content categories to the top navigation bar. Each category highlights both new content and any series a person already watches. Repix lets you remix and paint your photos on iOS
I'm amazed at the variety of photo editors available for the iPhone and iPad. Many are "me too" apps that don't offer many unique features, but Repix (free) offers a fresh idea. It can help you create some very artistic photos with only a little effort, even if you aren't the most creative photographer on the planet.
Repix contains a collection of brushes that you use to paint over your image. Each brush applies a unique effect. For example, there are brushes to "cartoonize" your image, or make it look like charcoal media. There are also brushes for edge enhancement, super saturated colors, and posterize brushes. Hulu Plus on Apple TV redesigned with simplicity and easy discovery features in mind

Apple will re-open expanded Texas Apple Store
We just mentioned yesterday that Apple was going to be revamping a few of its stores here inside the United States, and here's another one. The Apple Store in Barton Creek near Austin, Texas is set for a re-opening this weekend, after closing last year. The new store has taken over a place formerly used by Pottery Barn, and will reopen its doors on March 23 at 10am. Just like most of the other revamps across the country, the new store has lots more space, to be used to show off more demo units, run more training sessions, and a larger Genius Bar as well.

NVIDIA reveals Volta next-gen GPU platform
We're here at NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, and company CEO Jen Hsun-Huang has just revealed the next step in its GPU roadmap. Called Volta, it's scheduled to arrive after Maxwell, and will advance GPU technology with a ridiculous amount of memory bandwidth. GameStick shipping dev units this month, marks progress on controller, SDK and UI
Things seem to be rolling along nicely for Kickstarter success story, GameStick. The makers of the compact Android console will be shipping a dev unit later this month, measuring slightly larger than the final version, thanks in part to a Type A USB slot for mousing / keyboarding. Apple TV Software Updated to Version 5.2.1 with Bug Fixes, Hulu Redesign
Alongside today's update to iOS 6.1.3, Apple also updated the Apple TV to version 5.2.1. The 5.2.1 software contains a number of bug fixes and has also brought a redesigned Hulu app to the device. ABC has live-streaming mobile app in the works
The New York Times is reporting that ABC is working on an app to stream live ABC programming to the iPhones and iPads of cable and satellite TV subscribers. ABC, which is a subsidiary of Disney, would become the first American broadcaster to provide a live Internet stream of both national and local programming.
By providing the stream only to those who already pay for cable or satellite TV, the Times notes that ABC "preserves the cable business model that is crucial to the bottom lines of broadcasters, while giving subscribers more of what they seem to want -- mobile access to TV shows."

Dropbox has a new "Fix Permissions" feature
I consider myself fairly savvy when it comes to Dropbox, but I learned a new tip from Mac OS X Hints.
If you get "Permission Denied" errors, you can try to "Fix Permissions" in Dropbox. This is not repairing disk permissions in Disk Utility, it's within the Dropbox app itself.
To get to it, open Dropbox preferences, then click "Account" and you'll see this:
Make sure that "Unlink This Computer" is highlighted (if it isn't, press Tab until it is).

Mac sales up as iMac supply improves
Mac sales were down for the holiday 2012 quarter due to supply constraints on the new iMac models, but NPD Group data is showing that sales are up 14 percent year over year for January and February.
According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, that growth is due to improved availability of the all-in-one iMacs that began shipping in November, 2012. Munster believes that total global Mac sales for the March quarter will be down 5 percent year over year, but provided some positive spin in saying that there's room for "some slight upside."

EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding blasted Apple in a speech in Brussels today and urged EU member states to ensure that Apple complies with consumer protection laws, which require consumer electronics devices to come with a mandatory two-year warranty.

One of the challenges of owning an iPhone and iPad is sharing files between devices. Many iOS owners, me included, pass on iCloud and turn to third party solutions like Plex or Dropbox to seamlessly share files. One competing service worth a look is Quik.io.
Quik.io is a self-hosted, streaming solution that uses a desktop server to connect to your iOS device. It sounds complex, but it's not as the setup of the system is easy. Google testifies before House of Representatives, calls for updated email privacy laws
Google's legal director of law enforcement and information security, Richard Salgado, is set to testify before the US House of Representatives this morning about the need for new email privacy legislation. In his written testimony, Salgado notes that the 1986 ECPA (Electronic Communications Privacy Act) doesn't reflect the "ways in which people use the internet in 2013," noting how cloud computing has increased the amount of user information shared and stored online. Google is calling for ECPA to be updated to require that law enforcement obtain a search warrant for accessing users' emails and information stored online. Eine Studie von Gartner zeigte vor kurzem auf, wie dynamisch sich der Smartphone-Markt in den letzten Jahren entwickelt hat. Nokias Betriebssystem verlor über die letzten drei Jahre über 90 Prozent des Marktanteils und gehört nun zu den Nischenanbieter. Gleichzeitig stieg Android in nur drei Jahren vom Nischenanbieter zum dominierenden Betriebssystem auf und ist momentan auf rund 70 Prozent der Smartphones installiert.
Aufgrund dieser Garnter-Zahlen ist Analyst Charlie Wolf von «Needham & Company» der Frage nachgegangen, wieso sich die Smartphone-Industrie so schnell entwickelt. LG suspects Samsung of infringing its eye-tracking patents with the Galaxy S 4
Samsung's Galaxy S 4 isn't even available yet, but already it's being eyed for possible patent infringement. According to a report from Korea's Yonhap News, LG suspects the S 4 might violate eye-tracking patents used in the Optimus G Pro. At the crux of this squabble is a patent LG applied for in 2009, though the company also plans to investigate whether Samsung infringed other eye-tracking patents dating back to 2005. So far, of course, Samsung has denied any wrongdoing, saying its eye-tracking tech is implemented differently and is based on proprietary technology. Given that the

Satire-Film über Steve Jobs
Justin Long dürfte den meisten Apple-Benutzern von der «Get a Mac»-Kampagne bekannt sein. In dieser Apple-Werbekampagne spielte der junge Schauspieler zwischen 2006 und 2009 den «coolen» Mac, während John Hodgman den «langweiligen» PC verkörperte. Januar und Februar: Apple weiterhin mit guten Mac-Verkaufszahlen
Analyst Gene Munster von Piper Jaffray hat eine Studie veröffentlicht, wonach die Mac-Verkäufe in den USA im Januar und Februar gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 14 Prozent angestiegen seien. In der Studie greift Munster auf Daten vom Marktforschungsunternehmen NPD zurück. Alleine im Januar 2013 sollen die Verkaufszahlen um 31 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr angestiegen sein — damit hat das Wachstum im Februar zwar wieder nachgelassen, bliebe aber auf einem soliden Wert.
Erst noch im Weihnachtsquartal musste Apple erstmals seit Jahren ein happiges Minus bei den Mac-Verkäufen hinnehmen. Zwischen Oktober und Dezember 2012 wurden 700’000 weniger Mac-Computer verkauft als im gleichen Zeitraum im Jahre 2011. Nokia obtains injunction on HTC in Germany over battery saving wireless technology
Last May Nokia announced a serious patent offensive against several companies, one of which is HTC. According to FOSS Patents, today a German court awarded Nokia a patent injunction based on power saving technology it has patents for, and it claims is infringed upon by Qualcomm chips used in HTC's phones. While some of its other cases in Germany were stayed or dismissed, this ruling could be used by Nokia against HTC even during a potential appeal. Google Street View bringt euch mit allen Zehen auf Mount Everest und Kilimanjaro
Wirklich hohe Berge hochzukraxeln ist in der Realität nicht unbedingt jedermanns Sache und die meisten sind ja inzwischen nicht nur überfüllt, sondern leider auch zugemüllt. WhatsApp bald auch für iOS mit Abo-Gebühr (für neue Nutzer)
In einem Interview mit einem holländischen Journalist bestätigte WhatsApps CEO Jan Koum, dass die Kurznachrichten-App auch für iOS bald in einem Abo-Modell verkauft werde. Bereits seit vergangenem Jahr muss auf Android, BlackBerry und Windows Phone für die Benutzung von WhatsApp eine Jahresgebühr von 1 US-Dollar entrichtet werden. Das Abo-Modell soll noch in diesem Jahr auch unter iOS eingeführt werden. Da die App selbst bereits 1 US-Dollar kostet, ist die Nutzung im ersten Jahr kostenlos. Ab dem zweiten Jahr wird dann jährlich eine Abo-Gebühr von einem US-Dollar für WhatsApp verrechnet. Betroffen sollen nur neue Nutzer sein, wer WhatsApp also bereits nutzt, muss die neue Gebühr nicht entrichten. Wann genau die iOS-Version auf da Abo-Modell umgestellt wird, ist noch unklar.

An attempt by China Central Television (CCTV) to paint Apple and Volkswagen in a bad light through a celebrity-driven Sina Weibo campaign has backfired badly on the state-run media outlet after one of the celebrities posting an "Apple-bashing" post accidentally included an instruction on when to post from the TV station alongside his prepared talking point. WhatsApp to shift iOS app to annual subscription model
Mobile messaging service WhatsApp plans to move its iOS program (which delivers free SMS-like messages to other WhatsApp users) to an annual subscription model rather than the one-time fee the app currently charges. The subscription would be very low-cost as well -- the first year free, then just $1 per year afterwards -- but would increase revenue and move the app to the same model the company uses on all other platforms it serves. Daily iPhone App: Dojo Danger is worth the wait
It's hard to believe it was almost exactly a year ago that I met up with Kihon at last year's Game Developers' Conference to see this game called Dojo Danger. It's now available on the App Store, but it took quite a while. Even though the game was almost finished last year, Kihon chose to focus on a Draw Something-style game called SketchPhrase instead, only bringing Dojo Danger out a little while ago.

STMicro closing down, 1,600 jobs axed by chip design firm
Manufacturing partners Ericsson and STMicroelectronics will be shuttering ST-Ericsson, its poorly performing mobile chip joint venture, and will divide parts of the business between the two companies. The venture had been suffering from a large drop from its largest customer, Nokia, as market share of the companies handsets plummeted against competition from Apple and Samsung. ST-Ericsson had not turned a profit since it was formed in 2008, despite one in four smartphones sold in 2011 having some fort of its technology integrated.

Facebook updates iOS app, polishes group messaging, more
On Monday, Facebook updated its iOS app to version 5.6, revamping its messaging feature slightly to make it easier to name and group conversations and require fewer taps to start a group message. The other main improvement is the ability for users to updated their cover photo directly from the app, though this ability is limited to the iPhone and draws only from the camera or the photo library. Facebook had added free VOIP calling last month, after a brief trial period where the feature was implemented in Canada only.

Justin Long to play Steve Jobs in Funny or Die biopic parody
For years, actor Justin Long played the Mac to John Hodgman's PC in Apple's US TV advertising. Now Long is starring as Steve Jobs in a biopic parody due from the comedy website Funny or Die on April 15, 2013.
Ryan Perez, the writer and director of the upcoming iSteve, said that "in true Internet fashion, it's not based on very thorough research -- essentially a cursory look at the Steve Jobs Wikipedia page. It's very silly. But it looks at his whole life."
The movie is expected to run anywhere from 60 to 75 minutes in length, short for a feature film

EA expects poor quarterly financial results, CEO steps down
