Innovative Automation targets iCloud in patent lawsuit
In the always exciting world of patent infringement claims, Apple's iCloud is under attack. The Mac Observer reports that Innovative Automation, a company specializing in automated manufacturing solutions, is waging a patent war at Cupertino for allegedly infringing on a pair of patents for "Method and System for Supplying Products from Pre-Stored Digital Data in Response to Demands Transmitted via Computer Network."

Internal Microsoft Kin testing videos offer a new look at what went wrong
The downfall of Microsoft's Kin smartphones is a fairly well-known story at this point, and something that Microsoft would no doubt prefer to forget, but details have a tendency to keep trickling out. Apple investors 'return to senses' with big rally today
A massive sell-off in Apple shares that's been going on for about eight weeks now appears to have been nipped in the bud with a rally from Friday's close of US$527.68 to a high around $560. While the news out of Washington, DC about possible action on the upcoming "fiscal cliff" appears to be driving a broader market rally today, John Paczkowski at AllThingsD points out the real driver behind the AAPL rally -- Wall Street analysts are pointing out the stock slide as "unmerited".

Briefly: Apple Retail employee gain new bonus, PowerJolt SE
A new report from 9to5Mac has indicated that Apple will begin offering a new perk dubbed "App Discovery" to its retail employees. While Apple has previously offered retail employees free access to its own paid apps, the new perk extends the bonus to a catalogue of popular apps from third party developers. Reports also indicate that this may be a temporary holiday promotion that will not remain in place forever. Update: MacNN has received confirmation from an Apple Retail employee that the perk is indeed being offered to all retail staff.

Apple-owned AuthenTec sells off embedded security division
AuthenTec is selling off its embedded security solutions division to another firm, Inside Secure, says NFC World. The reason for the move hasn't been disclosed. AuthenTec was bought out by Apple earlier this year, however, and the latter is likely trying to get rid of unwanted parts of AuthenTec that use technology it doesn't need, or have clients it doesn't intend to support. In September, a Korean report claimed that AuthenTec will cut off all non-Apple customers in 2013.

Steve Jobs autographed computer chip
Letters of Note is a wonderful repository of "fascinating letters, postcards, telegrams, faxes, and memos," and a favorite destination of several members of the TUAW staff. Today's find was actually published on October 6, 2011, the day after Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs passed on. The typewritten letter, dated November 16, 1983, is from Jobs to an Apple fan ("Francis") who had apparently expressed enthusiasm about the company's early products.

How a kid-friendly app leaks mature content via YouTube
With the rose-hued glasses of nostalgia firmly in place, today's tech-tangled parents may long for a simpler pre-Internet time when kids simply got into fights or stayed out too late, rather than getting tangled up in sexting mishaps or giving out inappropriate personal info on Facebook.
For all technology's hazards, however, it has given moms and dads the opportunity to engage and explore our kids' preferences in media and leisure activities collaboratively with them. When we're enabled by parental controls or app ratings to help our kids make good choices, that's a win. When the rating systems or the restrictions don't encompass an edge case, unfortunately, that's a problem.

Greenpeaces downgrades Apple over transparency issues
Environmental activism group Greenpeace has downgraded Apple in its 18th annual Guide to Green Electronics. The slip to sixth place is blamed on a "lack of transparency" with several issues, namely "GHG [greenhouse gas] emission reporting, clean energy advocacy, further information on its [Apple's] management of toxic chemicals, and details on post-consumer recycled plastic use."

MiFi Liberate review: does the world need a mobile hotspot with a touchscreen?
There are two factors that are of the utmost importance when it comes to choosing mobile hotspots: speed and battery life. Further down the list is portability, with hardware design ranking even lower. So the idea of a touchscreen MiFi struck us as a ridiculous luxury, the sort of thing we'd find in a SkyMall catalog. This is why we were intrigued by the MiFi Liberate, Novatel Wireless's first-ever 4G LTE MiFi with a built-in touchscreen. While it might seem like a gimmick, the interface does, in fact, provide quick access to vital stats like data usage. Google breaks ground with pan-European music deal, shows that streaming knows no borders
We now know how Google could offer its European music services to multiple countries so quickly. New iMacs not delayed after all

Mac OS X 10.9: Apple Maps und Siri für Macs
Angeblich wurden in ersten Testversionen von Mac OS X 10.9 Hinweise auf eine Integration des sprachgesteuerten Assistenten Siri gefunden. Außerdem soll die Maps-App aus iPad und iPhone bald den Weg auf den Mac finden. iOS App Store to reach 1 million submitted apps milestone
An unofficial count from AppsFire, an app discovery and promotion platform, suggests the iOS App Store is about to accept its 1 millionth app submission, according to a report in The Next Web. The company broke down the app submissions since 2008 and found that 49 percent (493,289) were paid apps and almost 16 percent (158,848) were games. These figures include only the iOS App Store.

Messages beta for OS X Lion users ends December 14
Apple is notifying Lion users that the beta version of the Messages app will expire on December 14th. The app debuted as a free beta download for Lion users and was incorporated into OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion when the latest version of OS X was released earlier this year.

iTunes Match down for many
After a brief outage yesterday that affected iMessage and FaceTime, Apple's iTunes match service is now apparently down for some iOS and Mac users this morning. President Obama meets with Tim Cook, others
President Barack Obama spoke with prominent business leaders over the weekend to discuss his plan to avert the financial crisis that is looming early next year. According to Reuters, the list of senior corporate leaders with which Obama spoke include JPMorgan Chase's Jamie Dimon, investor Warren Buffet and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Details of designing the Jobs family yacht
Last month we saw images and a video of the Jobs family yacht Venus, which features a row of 27-inch iMacs on the bridge, floor-to-ceiling glass in many places, and a very unique design. SuperYacht Times recently interviewed famed French designer Philippe Starck, who collaborated with Jobs on the design of Venus.
Starck noted that at the beginning of the design process, Jobs gave him "carte blanche" to do whatever he wanted -- the requirements were just the length of the yacht and the number of guests Jobs wished to entertain on board.

NY Times: App gold rush leaves many struggling developers
The New York Times appears to have finally caught on to the big secret that many independent developers have known for a while -- the days of grabbing a pot of gold by writing an iOS app are over. In a Saturday post, the Times regaled readers with the stories of two app developers who have seen very different results on the App Store.

Apple App Store feiert einmillionste App

Apple hat heute einen großen Milestone erreicht. Laut Appfire soll heute die einmillionste App den hauseigenen App Store erreicht haben. Innerhalb von vier Jahren wurde diese Zahl erreicht, die nicht genehmigte, abgelehnte Apps nicht berücksichtigt. Laut TNW sind 45 Prozent der Apps kostenpflichtig und 16% davon sind Games. Ohne Frage eine Erfolgsgeschichte, die die Kassen in Cupertino auch gehörig aufgefrischt haben dürfte in der Zwischenzeit.

FBI arrests JFK worker in NYC iPad mini heist
The FBI has arrested an airport worker in the case of last week's iPad mini heist at New York City's JFK airport, according to sources and court documents obtained by the New York Post. The man, Renel Rene Richardson, is said to have been outed after Port Authority detectives talked to his coworkers, and learned that he had been asking unusual questions about both the iPads and where forklifts could be found. A forklift was used to load two pallets' worth of iPads into a truck, and might've been used to load even more had the thieves not been confronted by another airport worker.

Obama calls Tim Cook, other CEOs for 'fiscal cliff' advice
US President Barack Obama recently called several CEOs for advice on dealing with the upcoming "fiscal cliff" faced by the federal government, according to a White House official in contact with CNN. Der Apple-Fernseher hält sich seit Jahren in der Gerüchteküche. Vor wenigen Tagen wollte ein Analyst Anzeichen dafür entdeckt haben, dass das Gerät in naher Zukunft erscheinen wird. Bei genauerem Hinsehen dürfte der Fernseher aber doch noch etwas auf sich warten lassen.

Aus einer unternehmensnahen Quelle haben wir erfahren, dass Apple im Laufe der kommenden Woche ein größeres Produkt-Update durchführen wird. Worum es sich genau handelt, ist leider nicht bekannt. Store-Mitarbeiter sollen aber bereits zu Schulungszwecken abgeordnet worden sein und iTunes 11 wartet bereits in den Startlöchern.Wie wir von, verständlicherweise anonymen, aber über Interna informierten Personen erfuhren, werde es in den kommenden Tagen neue Produkte aus Cupertino geben. Leider gab es keine Details dazu, welche Geräte oder Programme nun aktualisiert werden.

Seit geraumer Zeit liegt Googles Android im Mobilfunkmarkt vor Apples iOS. Das mag kurzfristig kein Problem sein, schließlich ist die Marge von iPhone, iPad und Co. sehr hoch. Auf lange Sicht wird Apple sich aber entscheiden müssen: Bruttomarge oder Marktanteil.Android und iOS beanspruchen derzeit nach Angaben von Businessinsider zusammen fast 90 Prozent des Marktes weltweit. The Facebook app for iOS has received a slew of welcome features in its latest update, version 5.2. The biggest change is the new Share button, which the website has had for a while. Now users can share a friend's photos, links or videos on their or another friend's wall with just a tap.

iPads in the classroom reinvigorate teachers
We often hear about the iPad's impact on students and their academic achievement, but a new article in Edudemic also discusses the effect iPads are having on teachers. The report comes from Fred Sitkins, principal of Boyne City Elementary School in Boyne City, Mich., who writes "I've never observed anything else that has had the impact on teacher personal learning like the introduction of the iPad."

Apple grabs more than 1,000 patents from Rockstar Consortium
Apple is beefing up its patent portfolio with the recent transfer of over 1,000 patents from Rockstar Consortium. The patent and patent application transfer was first reported by Yonhap News and confirmed by patent transfer records in the US Patent and Trademark Office database.

Nintendo launches first paid iOS app
Cling tenaciously to your Pokémon cards, because this may come as a shock. Nintendo has launched a paid iOS app. The game is Pokédex, a DS title that was originally released in Japan and serves as an encyclopedia of Pokémon characters.
As Ars Technica notes, don't read too much into this release. A "glorified wikipedia" of Pokémon characters is one thing, and a full-on game is another.

Google's Blogger app gets iPad support
Google's Blogger weblogging service has been around since 1999, and 13 years later still provides blog publishing to a huge number of users. Google just announced version 2.0 of the free Blogger iOS app, now providing support for the iPad as a universal app.
The new version also added some bug fixes, but user comments indicate that it may have also introduced some new bugs. The app now has an easier user experience, supports 57 languages from Afrikaans to Zulu, and has finally provided support for viewing a scheduled post time.

Add an iPad mini with Verizon 4G to an existing Family Share Plan
Many of you may be receiving your iPad mini with WiFi + Cellular today or in the next few days, and there was some concern that people who already had a Verizon Family Share plan and were adding the mini to the plan would have to wait for postpaid SIM card to arrive from VZW prior to being able to use it. Well, David Chartier crossed his fingers and tried adding the mini to his plan from the Verizon website, and it worked just fine.

Tokens for Mac makes App Store codes easy to make and track
If you're an app maker, you already know the process of generating and distributing promotional codes for your software can be a bit of a headache. Apple's default app management tool, iTunes Connect, isn't exactly robust in its options for promo code distribution and tracking. A new application called Tokens aims to capitalize on iTunes Connect's shortcomings by offering an easy tracking solution for app publishers.
Tokens lets you generate promotion codes for iOS or Mac apps from within the application itself, and then label each "token" with the name of the individual it was sent to. You can share tokens via Mountain Lion's sharing feature, or manually by copying and pasting.

iPad sales in China climb after trademark resolution
Remember Apple's trademark dispute with monitor manufacturer Proview over the name iPad? The tiff was resolved in July of 2012 when a Chinese court told Apple to pay the company US$60 million, resulting in Apple getting full control of the iPad trademark in China. That trademark issue was apparently keeping many Chinese citizens from purchasing an iPad, because sales of the tablet have skyrocketed since July.
IDC analyst Dickie Chang attributed the growth in iPad shipments to Apple's ownership of the trademark in China, which opened the door to "legal" sales of

Daily iPhone App: Micro Miners combines Lemmings and mining in a cute brew
Back before he invented Minecraft, developer Notch made a little Java game called Miners 4K, which had you digging tunnels on a 2D playing field for little miners to find minerals and other goodies below the dirt. Another developer named Jean-Philippe Sarda later decided to take that idea and run with it on Apple's iOS platform, and the result is this game, Micro Miners, out this week on the App Store.

Court adds iPhone 5, Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy S III to patent lawsuit
Both Samsung and Apple may expand their patent infringement claims to include recently released devices, says a report in Computerworld. A California judge handed down an order that let Apple add the Jelly Bean OS and new Samsung products like the Note 10.1 and the Galaxy S III to an ongoing patent lawsuit between the two companies.
The same order also lets Samsung amend its infringement device list to include the iPhone 5 and possibly both the iPad mini and the iPad fourth generation. The order was handed down by Paul S. Grewal, Magistrate Judge of US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Enfour shares more details about app piracy
A few days ago, we wrote about the story of Enfour, an app developer that's specialized in a bunch of dictionary apps, who recently tried to shame pirates of their apps over Twitter, in a plan that caught too many legitimate users and didn't end up so great. iPhone 101: Switch Panorama direction
Want to go right-to-left when you create a panorama on your iPhone? There's a tap for that. Yes, if, for whatever reason, the left-to-right default is getting old, just tap on the arrow that appears on screen. The arrow will flip, allowing you to pan the other way while you are creating your ultra-pixel masterpiece.
The panorama feature was added to iOS 6 and requires either the new iPhone 5 or an iPhone 4S. Remember, that if you take a full panorama the image could be more than 16 megabytes, but if you send it from the phone it will be scaled down. Be sure to transfer the original to your computer to keep the high resolution version if you want it.

Home Theater Magazine has released Home Theater Top Picks for iPad, which has capsule coverage and pricing of audio and video equipment that's been reviewed favorably in the magazine. The app is divided into categories such as flat-panel displays, processors & amps, furniture and more.

JFK worker who helped steal 3600 iPad minis nabbed by FBI
Justice has prevailed! The FBI has arrested a worker at New York's JFK airport who acted as a lookout for a pair of accomplices who stole 3,600 iPad minis last week. Renel Rene Richardson (not to be confused with René Ritchie of iMore.com) was arrested after co-workers told Port Authority detectives that he had made inquiries about when the iPad minis were supposed to arrive, as well as where he might get a forklift.

Fake Apple apps available briefly in Google Play store
For a brief time last weekend, a developer impersonating Apple was selling versions of the company's popular iOS Apps in the Google Play Store. According to a post on Reddit, six apps with familiar titles like iPhoto and iMovie were being sold by Apple Inc. The icons were similar to the official titles and they were priced as the same as their iOS versions. An unknown number of customers purchased the apps and negative reviews began pouring in before Google pulled them from the Play Store.

iPad mini Diebstahl: FBI nimmt beteiligte Person fest

Wer gestern Abend Probleme beim Versenden von iMessages hatte, der braucht sich keine Gedanken zu machen, dass eventuell der Mobilfunkanbieter hierfür Schuld sein könnte. iFixit seziert das Google Nexus 4, Akku leistet Widerstand

Die Reperaturprofis von iFixit haben das Google Nexus 4 in seine Einzelteile zerlegt und es mit 7 von 10 Punkten benotet (10 ist am einfachsten zu reparieren). Die Rückseite des Android-Smartphones ist mit etwas Geduld leicht entfernt. Auch die insgesamt 15 Schrauben machen keine Probleme, sie lassen sich mit herkömmlichen Schraubenziehern lösen. FingerSense: Neuartiger Touchscreen hört dein Klopfen (Video)

Ein kalifornische Startup namens Qeexo hat eine Technik entwickelt, welche die Touchscreen-Bedienung erheblich erweitert. Mit "FingerSense" kann der Nutzer nicht nur seine Fingerspitzen, sondern auch die Fingernägel oder -knöchel verwenden. Ein akustischer Sensor, klein genug um in ein Smartphone zu passen, unterscheidet die Vibrationen der verschiedenen Berührungen. Jeder Teil des Fingers übernimmt andere Aufgaben - etwa könnte einmaliges Klopfen als "Rechtsklick" dienen - und auch Stifte werden erkannt. Curiosity Rover misst die Strahlung auf dem Mars

Faceshift: Kinect ahmt Gesichtsausdrücke in Realtime nach (Video)

Faceshift hat sich an die Verfeinerung der Kinect-Aufnahme von Gesichtsausdrücken gemacht und dabei ein System entwickelt, das selbst die kleinsten Bewegungen im Gesicht auf einem Avatar auf dem Screen wiederspiegeln kann. Auch wenn EverQuest 2 schon ähnliche Funktionen hat, ist das nicht nur ein System, das sich in der Zukunft für Games nutzen lässt, sondern auch für Videochats, in denen man mal etwas mehr als nur das Make-Up auflegen möchte. Projecteo: Instagram als Diashow für Zwerge
Es ist schon putzig. Auf Kickstarter werden gelegentlich die absurdesten kleinen Kisten konzeptioniert. Projecteo will ein Diaprojektor sein, der Instagram Bilder auf einen 35mm Film gebannt (sehr umständlich) an die Wand wirft und das alles mit einer Größe von winzig. Ihr seht es ja selbst. Wann genau - ausser auf einer Obskuritätenshow toter Medien - dieses Ding zum Einsatz kommen sollte, wissen wir nicht, aber es ist so putzig und vielleicht ja etwas für die Kids, die sind solche Bildformate noch aus diversen Klickkinokisten gewohnt und eine iPhone App zur Bedienung gibt es auch. Bio-Bots mit Rattenherz-Getriebe (Video)
An der Universität von Illinois arbeitet man an Bio-Bots, die mit einem Bein auf der Basis von Zellen eines Rattenherzens angetrieben werden und so in Zukunft durch den Körper als Medizinische Bots watscheln sollen um z.B. spezifische Giftstoffe aufzuspüren und auszumerzen. Natürlich wäre das nicht nur innerhalb eines Körpers, sondern auch in der sonstigen Umwelt möglich. Bug: Android 4.2 hat was gegen den Dezember

Wer schon das Update auf Android 4.2 durchführen konnte, weiß vielleicht schon Bescheid: Die neue Version von Googles Betriebssystem kommt mit einem Bug, der zwar eher amüsant als schlimm ist, im Zweifel aber doch nerven kann. Finden wir uns damit ab, dass Patentklagen mittlerweile zum guten Ton im Tech-Business gehören. While the humble touchscreen has become the standard interface for most smartphones, and capacitive displays make it a painless experience, the folk at start-up Qeexo think things could still be improved. It's developed a technology called FingerSense that could add even more functionality. Essentially, by using a small acoustic sensor, it measures the vibrations as objects tap the screen, and can tell the difference between them. Report: Google finishing up iOS 6 Maps application
According to sources familiar with the matter, Google is distributing beta versions of an iOS 6 compatible Google Maps application. The Wall Street Journal's source claims that Google is putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it to the Apple iTunes store. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon start carrying iPad mini
AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have announced that they are now carrying the LTE iPad mini. Sprint is warning people that launch stocks may be limited; if a store is out of the device, though, the carrier is offering people reservations contingent on buying a $50 gift card that counts against the tablet's price. In terms of plans, Sprint is selling month-to-month options ranging from $15 for 300MB up to $80 for 12GB, or discounts for current smartphone subscribers valued at $10 for 100MB or $15 for 1GB. Activations fees are being waived for all of the carrier's tablets.

Report backs Apple talks with cable companies about TV
Apple has indeed been talking with "a few large cable operators" about a new TV product, says AllThingsD. The information comes from anonymous sources, reached in response to a recent investor memo from Jefferies & Co. analyst James Kisner. Kisner claims that at least one big cable operator is running tests to determine if it can handle the bandwidth an Apple HDTV might require. He suggests that this could point to "an imminent launch," but AllThingsD disputes the claim.

AT&T 4G network expansions now cover more than 150 million
Carrier AT&T is continuing the roll-out of its 4G LTE network, announcing the expansion to 24 new markets this week. The move means 150 million US residents now have access to the high-speed network, which is more than double of the number the carrier catered to last year. AT&T said it's ahead of schedule with the roll-out, and its 4G network can be as much as 10 times faster than 3G speeds when accessing data on the go.

The Australian government is asking the local division of Apple to pay $28.5 million in back taxes, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Chinese iPad shipments double following trademark dispute
Following the resolution of the lawsuit between Apple and Proview over the iPad trademark, iPad shipments to the Chinese market have nearly doubled. This according to analysts with research firm IDC, who found that shipments of Apple's tablet jumped from 1.15 million units in the second quarter of this year to 2.07 million in the last quarter. The release of the third-generation iPad had been delayed following the finding by Chinese government officials that Proview rightfully held claim to the iPad trademark.

Talks are underway between Apple and Google's Motorola Mobility to resolve disputes over critical smartphone technology patents, according to a court filing. Reports hold that the two companies have been exchanging proposals on binding arbitration that would bring a licensing agreement for standards-essential patents, one that could lead to a general settlement of all of their patent disputes worldwide. Analysts say that, depending on the size and scope of the agreement, the negotiations could result in greater protection for the many licensees of Google's Android platform.

Apple discontinuing Messages beta for Lion on December 14
The Lion version of Messages, which existed as a beta only and gave users a taste of the way the program operates on Mountain Lion, will never emerge from beta and will be discontinued on December 14, according to an email from Apple to existing Messages beta users. The change does not affect those running Messages on Mountain Lion, but closes the only non-ML portal to the service. Users are encouraged to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but those who can't will be able to continue to use iChat, which offered many of the same features but lacked the full level of message integration.

VP of Hardware Dan Riccio sells $11M in AAPL
The Vice President of Hardware Engineering for Apple, Dan Riccio, has sold over 20,000 shares of Apple stock he had accumulated over the years, netting the executive nearly $11 million in total, though around $525,000 of it has been set aside as a charitable donation. Including that gift, the total value of the 19,726 shares sold is approximately $10.73 million, minus any applicable taxes. Riccio replaced the formerly-retiring Bob Mansfield as head of hardware engineering, with Mansfield returning to the company to head up a new "Technologies" group.

Fake 'Apple' apps appear on Google Play, quickly pulled
For a brief time on Saturday, a batch of apps claiming to be from "Apple Inc." and including all the titles formerly grouped under the headings "iWork" and "iLife" appeared as Android apps on Google's Play store. The apps, which were apparently lightly-disguised scams, were pulled from the store a few hours later. It is unknown how many Android users may have been fooled and downloaded the apps, and its not yet known for what purpose the fake apps appeared (though malware, very common in the Android community, is very possible).

Federal judge may approve Google's FTC Safari deal [U}
At least one of Google's conflicts with the Federal Trade Commission may be close to a finish, as a San Francisco judge has signaled that she may approve a $22.5 million settlement over Google's placement of cookies on Apple's Safari browser. Google agreed to pay the fine in August of this year, and now U.S. District Judge Susan Illston has given a preliminary view that the $22.5 million fine will be adequate. A final ruling is expected soon.

The patent D670,713 covers the animated page turn capability that Apple has implemented in the iBooks application, which simulates a virtual page turn, helping to give readers of e-books the feeling of reading a real book.
