Could your iPad case stop a bullet?

Our friends over at the newly remade Engadget get to have all the fun. In order to test a VestGuard UK iPad panel that purports to be bulletproof, they actually pulled out some bullets and guns. They snapped the case on a first-gen iPad, grabbed both a 9mm and a .357 Magnum, and got to shooting. Both firearms were fired at the case in a relatively straightforward way, with the iPad leaned up against some bales of hay, protective case facing the incoming bullet. So did it work? You can see both bullets fired in the picture above, and the case did work: Neither bullet, even at such close ranges, made it through the case. So the good news is that yes indeed, this case could save your life.

Facebook tests auto-uploads; Foursquare gets new category

Facebook is testing automatic photo uploads for its iOS app, Engadget reports. Firefox und Thunderbird 17 veröffentlicht

Pünktlich sechs Wochen nach Firefox 16 wurde heute offiziell Firefox 17 veröffentlicht. Diese Versionen gibt es auch als ESR-Version (Extended Support Release) mit Langzeitsupport. Gleichzeitig wurden auch Firefox für Android und der Thunderbird-Mail-Client in Version 17 freigegeben.

Nielsen: iPad dominates kids', teens' demands

The Apple iPad is far and away the most coveted product for by kids and teenagers, a new Nielsen study suggests. 48 percent of surveyed kids aged 6 to 12 would like one in the next six months, while 21 percent of those 13 and older want the device. The iPad mini is fourth place amongst the 6-12 group at 36 percent, and ninth place in the 13+ demographic, coming in at 11 percent.

According to a report in GigaOM, Google is working on a wireless media streaming solution that'll rival Apple's AirPlay. Report: Google developing open AirPlay alternative

Google is said to be working on an open alternative to the AirPlay functionality seen in Mac OS X and iOS devices, enabling owners of mobile devices to interact with and beam contact to connected televisions. Details on the new standard are scarce, but Google is said to be working with a range of device and software vendors with the goal of "[moving] the whole industry forward." It is possible that the standard would involve solely Android and Google TV products at first, but the goal of a truly open standard could mean that it would be featured on other platforms and other devices as well.

Apple TV users report issues after updating

The latest Apple TV Update (version 5.1) is causing headaches for some users. Mozilla releases Firefox 17, drops OS X 10.5 support

Mozilla today made available version 17 of its Firefox desktop browser, bringing a number of functionality fixes and security upgrades. The upgrade brings an improved Awesome Bar experience with larger icons, revision of the Social API and support for Facebook Messenger, and click-to-play blocklisting to prevent vulnerable plugin versions from running without user permission. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch confirmed on company's site, scheduled for December launch

Announced quietly on its site today, Lenovo's pushing its Ultrabook legacy forward with the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch. Some people updating their Apple TVs to the latest firmware have found it rendering their set-tops useless, notes AppleInsider. Plex releases Media Server v0.9.7.3 with new Plex/Web client

The latest update to Plex Media Server allows access to the new Web client, which is pretty sweet. It lets you access your content from anywhere in the world using a fairly recent browser and it works great on Chrome and Safari. Navigation is smooth and quick, and the in-browser media player works well. It's also easy to correct issues with your library from the web client, a bit easier than on the desktop I find. I've been using the Plex iOS app for the better part of a year, and it's been great on my iPhone and iPad. As promised, Nokia has released a native HERE Maps app for iOS. The app uses NAVTEQ data, and attempts to fill in some of the gaps left by the absence of Google Maps in iOS 6. OpenFeint gaming service closing down December 14

App Store-connected social hub Openfeint isn't going to be around much longer, relinquishing iOS gaming leaderboards to Apple's own offering. Its owner, Gree, picked up the iOS and Android gaming platform back in April 2011 and is now trying to convince developers to bring their titles across to its main social gaming service. HTC "happy" with Apple settlement

HTC chief executive Peter Chou told Reuters that his company is "happy" with its recent settlement with Apple. He also noted that the press's suggestion that HTC will pay Apple between six and eight dollars per phone sold as part of a licensing agreement is "outrageous." "I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong," Chou told Reuters. "[The popular estimate] is a outrageous number, but I'm not going to comment anything on a specific number. A new study by Strategy Analytics shows that Appleís iPad will continue to lead downloads for tablet apps through 2017. The iPad will continue to lead the market in downloads with a share of 56 percent, with the new iPad mini will help to pave a new wave of tablet app downloads from the App Store. Conversely, by 2017, Google Android-powered smartphones will lead the market in app downloads with a 45 percent share, while Appleís iPhone app downloads will comprise half that at 22 percent. According to the cofounder of iOS app discovery tool Appsfire, Apple's iOS App Store has passed the milestone of over one million apps submitted and approved into its marketplace. The store, which opened in July 2008, currently hosts approximately 736,247 apps, 45 percent of which are paid and 16 percent of which are games. Color Labs acquisition confirmed by lawsuit against CEO

USITC plans review of Samsung patent violation verdict

As part of the regular review process of a US International Trade Commission (USITC) judgement, the commission has declared that it will review a judge's decision which found that Apple was not in violation of Samsung-held patents in making its line of multitouch iOS devices. Microsoft to build a biogas-fueled data plant, keeps DeLorean dreams alive

Leave it to Microsoft to power its cloud services with a very different kind of cloud -- a smellier, gaseous one. The computing giant is investing $5.5 million in research and development to see if it can use the biogas from the Dry Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Cheyenne, Wyoming to fuel a data plant. It's working together with the city of Cheyenne and a company called FuelCell Energy to get the project built by spring of 2013. According to Microsoft, the fuel cell plant will provide 200 kilowatts of power with any excess going back to reduce electricity cost. US Cellular promo brings unlimited LTE to smartphone owners for $40 per month, but tethering is another $20

A US Cellular rep confirmed today that the carrier is now offering a new unlimited 4G LTE data plan. Customers within the company's LTE markets can now add unlimited 4G data for $40 per month -- only through January 31st of next year, though. If surfing the web on a smartphone isn't enough, you can add optional tethering for an additional $20, which requires a separate tiered hotspot data plan. Just in time for the holidays, this ample offering lines up with the carrier's recent LTE expansion and its plan to bring 4G access to 58 percent of its customers

ITC to review decision that cleared Apple of infringing Samsung patents

AC/DC catalog comes to iTunes Store

Australian hard rock band AC/DC have signed a deal to put their whole catalog on the iTunes Store. The library includes 16 studio albums, four live recordings, and featured tracks on three compilations. Unique to iTunes are two collections: the first, simply titled The Collection, costs $100 and bundles together all of the band's studio albums. The Complete Collection is $150, but incorporates the live albums as well as rare and demo tracks.
