LightSquared to cut staff by 45 percent as troubles grow
Yet another bit of bad news to add to the pile for LightSquared -- the company announced this week that it will be cutting back on its employment numbers by 45 percent. The cost cutting move comes a day after word got out that it had defaulted on a hefty $56.25 million payment. According to reports, the Virginia-based company, which currently employs some 330 people, is apparently not looking into bankruptcy, in spite of its mounting troubles.

Dell falls short on Q4 earnings: $16 billion in revenue, only $764 million in profit
Q4 of fiscal year 2012 was another rough one for Dell. The company fell short of expectations yet again, collecting roughly three quarters of a billion dollars in net income on revenues of $16 billion. The one bright spot was its enterprise division, which had another record quarter -- accounting for 30 percent of revenues ($4.9 billion). Proview ready to negotiate on eve of court hearing
After threatening to sue Apple, Proview is now preparing to talk with the American company about its iPad trademark. It hopes to reach a settlement before an upcoming trial on its trademark begins. Proview's lawyer Xie Xianghui says it is approaching Apple with "peaceful intentions" according to a report in AppleInsider and The Times of India. Apple verschiebt Sandbox-Deadline auf 1. Juni 2012
Eigentlich wollte Apple schon am 1. November 2011 Entwickler dazu zwingen, dass Programme, die über den Mac App Store vertrieben werden, in einer so genannten Sandbox laufen. Nokia's Pulse app looks and smells familiar to anyone who's ever used Google Latitude. Patent application hints at Voice Actions for Google TV
Android on your phone can send texts, perform searches, set alarms and execute plenty of other tasks with little more than a simple voice command. Microsoft says Office for iPad story is based on 'inaccurate rumors and speculation'
The Daily got a lot of folks hopes up earlier today with a rumor that Office would soon be making an appearance on the iPad, but Microsoft is now throwing a bit of cold water on that news. While it's not exactly an outright denial that such an app is coming, a Microsoft spokesperson has now told The New York Times' Bits website that "The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation," and that it simply has "no further comment" at this time.

News: Apple to allow environmental audits of suppliers
Apple will soon allow independent environmental reviews of at least two of its suppliers’ factories in China, according to a new report. Proview sucht Einigung mit Apple
Die Associated Press veröffentlichte gestern ihren Bericht über das Gerichtsurteil aus Huizhou, einer Stadt in der südlichen Provinz Guangdong. Raspberry Pi wears a new Fedora (video)
If you've been keeping an eye on this tasty little computer, you'll know it's a pretty exciting concept already. To further sweeten the deal, it just got its own version of Fedora. A special "remix" edition has been ported over to the micro-machine by a team at Seneca College. Although there's already a Debian release for the diminutive device, the project's official blog states that Fedora Remix is the distribution it'll be recommending to users. Samsung's iCloud rival delayed

Created by Physical Apps, LLC, TheO is a soft foam ball that serves as a cradle for your iPhone or iPod touch. Tja, sieht danach aus, als ob eine iPad-Version von Microsoft Office kurz bevor steht. The Daily haben wohl schon eine Betaversion antesten können, mit der sich Word-, Excel und PowerPoint-Files online und lokal erzeugen lassen. Die Oberfläche ähnelt der OneNote App, hat aber auch Designelemente von Metro. Laut The Daily wird es definitiv keine Android-Version geben, Office fürs iPad aber bald beim App Store eingereicht werden. Da dürfte die Wolkenlösung CloudOn ernsthafte Probleme bekommen.

China Telecom bietet iPhone 4S ab März an - neuer Absatzboom für Apple
Neuer Megadeal für Apple: In China ist das iPhone Monopol gefallen. Nach dem bislang China Unicom Apples Exklusiv Partner für den chinesischen iPhone-Markt war, bietet ab 9. März 2012 Chinas drittgrößtem Mobilfunkanbieter China Telecom das begehrte Smartphone an. Das wird bei Apple ordentlich die Kassen klingeln lassen.
Mit seinen rund 130 Millionen Kunden ist China Telecom für Apple ein lukratives Feld. Viele Kunden werden sich am 9. März auf das iPhone 4S stürzen und somit Apple nicht nur ein horenden Absatz ermöglichen, sondern zugleich auch den Marktanteil in China wachsen lassen. Samsungs iCloud-Konkurrent S-Cloud wird verschoben

Die koreanische ETNews berichtet, dass Samsungs Antwort auf Apples iCloud, die S-Cloud, deutlich nach hinten verschoben wurde. Zunächst sollte Samsungs IT Infrastrukturabteilung SDS die Sache in die Hand nehmen, nachdem das Ergebnis aber als "untauglich" eingeschätzt wurde, sah sich Samsungs Media Solution Center gezwungen, den koreanischen Cloud-Spezialisten KT und Amazon zu Hilfe zu rufen. Apple threatens defamation lawsuit in Chinese iPad trademark case
Apple and Proview are in a heated legal battle over the ownership of the iPad name in China and now Apple is threatening to sue the Asian company for defamation. Apple is upset with Proview's attempt to reclaim the iPad trademark and use it to ban iPad sales in China. According to PC World, Apple supposedly sent a letter to Proview founder Yang Rongshan which says, "It is inappropriate to release information contrary to the facts to the media, especially when such disclosures have the effect of wrongfully causing damage to Apple's reputation," Apple's letter follows a public press conference by Yang during which he claimed Proview never transferred the trademark to Apple. Microsoft Office kommt aufs iPad
Exklusiv hatte Matt Hickey von The Daily die Gelegenheit, sich das Office-Paket von Microsoft auf Apples Tablet anzusehen. Das Design von Office fürs iPad soll dem der bereits verfügbaren OneNote-App ähneln, jedoch auch Elemente von Microsofts Metro-UI besitzen.
Mit Hilfe der Office-App können Word-, Excel- und PowerPoint-Dateien auf dem iPad und online erstellt und bearbeitet werden. Ob weitere Office-Anwendungen von Beginn an unterstützt werden sollen, ist bislang unklar.

Rumor: iPad 3 case thicker, shows more gradual taper
Chinese tech website M.I.C Gadget gets some amazing spy shots on occasion. This time, they have photos that purport to show the back case of the rumored iPad 3. As you can see from the photos above, the alleged iPad 3 case (bottom) is slightly thicker than the case of the iPad 2. Although the difference in thickness appears to be significant, another photo (below) shows that the iPad 3 case is actually only about 1 to 1.5 mm thicker.

We already had a strong hunch that it was coming to US Cellular, thanks to the FCC, but now it's official: Samsung's iconic Galaxy S II is finally making its way to the regional carrier in the coming weeks for $230 on a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. This version of the GSII offers the same 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos CPU found in the original version, as well as a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. Apple patents new method for water detection
Apple has submitted a patent that describes a better method of detecting water in an electronic device. In other words, Apple has devised a way to know if your iPhone has been in a pool (for example) before you try to return it to an Apple Store as defective. The patent describes a method of covering up an internal electronics sensor with a glob of water-soluble glue, which dissolves and reveals the sensor when exposed to water. The appearance of the sensor would tip off anyone examining the phone to water exposure. There are a number of different methods described in the patent, but they all follow that basic idea. It's that time of the year when Barnes & Noble's accountants reveal the figures for the quarter to determine if the age of print is over. Turns out there's some good news for bookseller. Die Firma Focus Designs hat ihrem Einrad mit Autobalance nach dem Segway-Prinzip ein Update verpasst, das für 1500 Dollar plus Versandkosten zu haben ist: die zweite Version des E-Einrads oder auch SBUs (Self Balancing Unicycle) macht bis zu 10 km/h und soll es mit einer Akkuladung immerhin 12 Kilometer weit bringen, das Aufladen soll dann in 2 Stunden erledigt sein. iTunes Store und App Store: Apple soll großes Redesign planen
Laut 9 to 5 Mac möchte es Apple den Store-Besuchern leichter machen, Musiktitel und Apps zu finden. Besonders der App Store wird angesichts der Masse der iOS-Anwendungen zunehmend unübersichtlicher. Georgia Tech's BrailleTouch is a Braille writer for iPhone
Researchers from the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech have developed a prototype iPhone app called BrailleTouch that should revolutionize texting and data entry for visually impaired iPhone users.
