Clearwire says it plans on launching TD-LTE network by June 2013
Clearwire's been promising us that speedy LTE network for quite some time now. The good news is, we may have a clearer view of when to expect the waves to start flowing. During yesterday's Q4 earnings call, CEO Erik Prusch said his company plans on rolling out its LTE tides by June of next year, with the help of 5,000 wave sites around the US and a "longer-term" plan of adding about 3,000 more. Mountain Lion signals end-of-life for older Macs
In its announcement of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on Thursday, Apple failed to mention that a handful of Macs that will be cut from the fold when the next generation operating system debuts this summer due to end of support for older Intel integrated graphics chipsets.

Magnus magnetic stand has a hold on your iPad 2
Sometimes the most simple accessories can be the most effective. When I received a tiny box from Ten One Design claiming to hold a stand that would support an iPad 2 in an upright position, I scoffed. But it turns out that the Magnus magnetic stand (US$49.95) really does work. The Magnus is a tiny sculpted piece of aluminum with a very powerful magnetic strip at the bottom. When you place an iPad 2 onto it in the designated landscape orientation (with the home button on the right side), the Magnus and iPad click together. Held in the magnetic clutch of the Magnus, the iPad is nicely balanced and stays securely perched. This is one of the smallest iPad stands I've reviewed so far and I've reviewed a lot of 'em.

SumOfUs criticizes FLA head, plans new petition deliveries
Activist group SumOfUs has issued a statement criticizing the president of the Fair Labor Association, Auret van Heerden, for initially approving of Foxconn factory conditions. Even though the FLA is just beginning its study, based on early tours, van Heerden has already claimed that Foxconn plants are "first-class" with conditions "way, way above average of the norm." Hero Academy Dwarves update coming Feb 22, for $1.99
Hero Academy has fallen a bit out of my gaming attention lately (truth be told, Triple Town is stealing most of my iOS gaming time these days, probably more than is healthy), but it's still an excellent free-to-play title, and I still have about 15 games going on at any given moment. My BMW Remote app reaches iOS in the US
BMW has made its iOS app available to its car owners in the US (free, App Store). The app, My BMW Remote, lets owners use their Apple device in conjunction with the company's BMW Assist service to remotely access and control their vehicle's features. Basic remote functions include finding the car's location, remote door locking and unlocking, and pushing a local Google search to the vehicle.

Boxee and the NCTA debate if ClearQAM is good for us
The National Cable & Telecommunications Association and Boxee don't see eye to eye on whether or not ClearQAM is good or bad for us. Mountain Lion drops support for several older Mac models
Every new version of OS X comes with harsh news for owners of older Macs: "Your Mac is too old. You're stuck with your current OS. Forever." For Mac OS X Leopard in 2007, anyone who owned a Mac with a processor slower than 867 MHz was stuck with Tiger. In 2009, Snow Leopard made the biggest (and most controversial) shift yet and dropped support for all PowerPC Macs. Mozilla offers Gaia UI first look, will reveal Boot to Gecko partners at MWC
Mozilla surprised us last summer when it announced plans for its Boot to Gecko mobile OS. BioWare, Razer show off Mass Effect 3 PC, Xbox, iPhone gear
Gaming peripherals maker Razer has just introduced its Mass Effect 3 branded gear. Developed by and licensed with BioWare, there are seven peripherals in total. Tim Cook discusses Mountain Lion with the Wall Street Journal
Many media outlets got a sneak preview of Apple's next version of OS X, Mountain Lion, and the Wall Street Journal was no exception. Source tip Apple Store plans in New York, Florida, Australia
Some of Apple's 2012 retail plans should involve New York and Florida in the US, and the city of Adelaide in Australia, according to ifoAppleStore sources. The Carousel Center mini-store in Syracuse, New York is expected to move into a larger space later this year, possibly to one currently under construction near a Clark's in the same mall. News: Apple wins injunction against Motorola in Germany
Apple has won a permanent injunction against most of Motorola Mobility’s products in Germany. Clik lets Android, iOS control any browser-based device
Kik launched an offshoot app, Clik, on Thursday. The Android- and iOS-based apps borrow a trick from Sony's Vscreens that lets a mobile device remote control and push video to any target device with a browser. Visiting the website (above) makes a QR code unique to that computer that, when scanned by the app, lets the phone or tablet push YouTube videos to the computer's larger screen. RIM to release BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 on February 21st?
By now, you've seen all that RIM's 2.0 software update for the PlayBook is prepared to give -- just not in your own hands. Wer sich jetzt noch nicht auf die Suche nach einer Developer Version gemacht hat, der wird u.U. gerne mal das nächste Mac Betriebssystem im Einsatz sehen. PS: Wer sich wundert warum es eigentlich kein Apple Event dazu gegeben hat, den können wir beruhigen. Es gab sie. iCloud gains 15 million users in 21 days, now at 100 million users
Apple CEO Tim Cook, speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference yesterday, noted that iCloud now has over 100 million users. Fujitsu Roadmap zeigt Ultrabooks und Slates

IHS iSuppli: Kindle Fire eating ASUS, Samsung share the most
A rare breakdown of tablet market share by IHS iSuppli has shown that the Kindle Fire may be doing more damage to other Android manufacturers than to Apple. Amazon was estimated to have shipped 3.9 million units in the fall, or enough to get it 14 percent of the market. While this dropped the iPad's 15.4 million units from 64 percent share to 57, other Android supporters lost over a quarter of their own share.

Amazon China not approved to sell iPad, sources claim
Amazon pulled the iPad from its Chinese storefront because of a lack of authorization, sources for the Wall Street Journal claim. The sources add that Apple has been working with Amazon for weeks on the matter, and that the takedown has nothing to do with Proview, the company suing Apple over use of the iPad trademark in China. Amazon.cn pulled the iPad from listings earlier this week; the Journal's report doesn't explain why another retailer, Suning, also withdrew listings.

The new beta for Messages has left me and other members of TUAW staff reaching for aspirin and lamenting that this is nowhere near ready for prime time. Looks like that Google approval's taking a little longer than expected. ASUS just announced that the Android 4.0 update for its first Transformer tablet now likely to land between now and next month. We've just inched over the mid-February deadline last offered up by the company and this new, vaguer release date arrives from ASUS's Singapore arm. Motorola found violating Apple slide-to-unlock patent
Apple won a crucial win against Motorola in a Munich court after it won a permanent ban against most Motorola uses of its slide-to-unlock patent. Motorola's current smartphones, though not its tablets, allegedly copy two techniques first seen in 2007 on the iPhone. A third representation leveled against the Xoom (and likely Xyboard) was exempted and likely points to Android 3 and 4 devices not being covered by the victory.

Das jedenfalls war mein erster Gedanke als ich schon wieder von einem dieser wirklich banalen Patentrechtsstreite die heute in München entschieden wurden lesen musste. Die meisten Motorola Smartphones (das Xoom ist ausgenommen) verstossen laut Gericht gegen das Patent von Apple. Berufung folgt dann in Folge 213 des nuklearen Patent-Dramas Apple vs. Android. Ja, diese Saison scheint sich voll und ganz in Deutschland abzuspielen. In Mannheim liegt z.B. das gleiche Patent gegen Samsung vor.

Cook sees merging of notebooks, tablets as possibility
Although notebooks and tablets will continue to co-exist, further convergence of the two is a possibility, says Apple CEO Tim Cook. Intel releases Core i7-3820 CPU, proves Sandy Bridge E isn't entirely elitist
The cost of entry to the LGA-2011 party just tumbled by around $250 thanks to Chipzilla's Core i7-3820 processor. It's a proper Sandy Bridge E processor with PCIe 3.0 support and more PCIe lanes, more memory bandwidth and room for more RAM compared to older platforms, but of course it's also lower specced than the pricey 3960X and 3930K. Nielsen: 70% of children in homes with tablets use one
Nielsen in a fresh study showed that 70 percent of US families with tablets let their kids use at least one of the devices. The use, which applied to every child under 12 this fall, was a nine-point hike from just this past summer. Double Fine's CEO Tim Schafer, who made almost two million dollars last week through Kickstarter for his next game, has announced that thanks to all the extra donations (the project was originally budgeted at just US$400,000), Double Fine will be able to put all sorts of extra features and compatibility into the title. Apple claims backing for rights to Chinese iPad trademark
Apple has broken its usual silence on legal matters to defend its assertion to the iPad trademark in China, a China Daily report indicates. "We bought Proviewís worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple, and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter," an Apple statement claims. Apple on Thursday released a public beta of Messages, its next-generation messaging app for the Mac that will be a part of Mac OS X Mountain Lion. The automatic blocks wouldn't safeguard personal information, and could artificially impede the personal freedom to send and receive data, according to the Brussels ruling. Xbox 360 system update gets its colors in order, makes it mandatory
Remember those color problems experienced by some Xbox 360 users after last year's dashboard update? Microsoft appears to have fixed the issue in its latest system update, although it will take time for the fix to roll out across the associated apps -- we've been told this will happen over the next few months. Its Sony rival also rolled out its own (optional) update for the PS3 yesterday, improving "certain aspects" of the UI. Intel may push Ivy Bridge back to June
Intel may delay full scale production of its highly anticipated Ivy Bridge processors due to weak PC sales, the result of the slowdown in the global economy. According to Digitimes, Intel is giving PC makers more time to clear their stock, so that Intel in turn can clear its own inventories of Sandy Bridge-based second-generation Core i-series processors. Intel is said to have notified partners that it will delay its production ramp for Ivy Bridge to June, with shipments starting in early April.

Sony completes Ericsson stake buyout, runs phones itself
Sony at early Thursday Japanese time formally completed its buyout of Ericsson's stake in Sony Ericsson. The move now leaves Sony Mobile Communications as a completely Sony-owned company. Bert Nordberg would still be CEO of the mobile group, which it revealed had about 100 million euros ($130.3 million) in stated working capital.

European Parliament approves January 2013 deadline for 4G spectrum free up
Back in November, the European Commission, European Parliament and its member states agreed on plans to repurpose their 800MHz frequency bands for 4G mobile networks. Today, that decision has been officially approved. The Radio Spectrum Policy Programme (RSPP) has been set up to coordinate the use of this spectrum for fourth-generation services across the continent. Currently, 800MHz is used for analog television, but the new ruling gives member nations until the 1st of January 2013 to switch over to digital and authorize the band for its new role.

Android Jelly Bean may optimize for tablets again, dual-boot
Google's future Jelly Bean version of Android, unofficially known as Android 5.0, might be focused even more on larger screens than recent versions. A rumor from Taiwan suppliers late Wednesday claimed to Digitimes that Jelly Bean was "further optimized" for tablets. Some elements of Chrome or Chrome OS would supposedly be in place to allow a live dual-boot: users could flip from Windows to Android without having to shut down one or the other.

Apple's latest lawsuit versus Samsung is considerably wider than outlined in its bid for a preliminary ban. Although it's focusing immediate attention on the Galaxy Nexus, a total of 17 devices are alleged to be infringing a twice-as-large set of eight patents. YouTube user Mark Rober, last seen making a gruesome Halloween costume with a couple of iPad 2s, has posted another video on YouTube featuring another relatively unconventional use for Apple's mobile devices. Rober found that during a trip to the zoo, he could use the iPhone's front camera and screen to both get the apes' attention and film them at the same time. Yale Physicists develop quantum computing error correction, are a qubit pleased with themselves
We're big fans of quantum computing, and hopefully it's about to get a lot more reliable. Researchers at Yale have demonstrated quantum error correction in a solid state system for the first time. Quantum bits were created from "artificial" atoms using superconducting circuits, these qubits are then given either of the typical bit states of "1" or "0," or the quantum state of both simultaneously. The researchers developed a technique that identifies each qubit's initial state, so any erroneous changes can be reversed on the fly. Until now, errors have been a barrier in quantum computing, accumulating and ultimately causing computational failure. A

HP CEO worries Android may be closed after Google-Motorola
HP's chief Meg Whitman in a presentation at her company's Global Partner Conference on Wednesday was concerned that Google's likely completed Motorola acquisition would create a chilling effect in mobile. Spirits out on Mac App Store now
Spirits is a really amazing title that original came out on iOS last year: It's sort of a Lemmings clone, though the art style and the game's floaty physics mechanics really add a lot of great new elements to that old classic. Now, Spaces of Play has brought the game to the Mac App Store, so if you haven't gotten to play it yet, you can see it on the big screen with full audio running. Unfortunately, there's no new content available, but Spaces of Play has of course tweaked the game's graphics and interface to work on the desktop rather than on a touchscreen. Gartner reports Apple top among smartphone vendors
Gartner released its quarterly and yearly mobile phone sales estimates and, not surprisingly, Apple was the leader in the smartphone market. Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter and became the world's top smartphone vendor with 23.8 percent market share. Worldwide smartphone sales climbed to 149 million units in Q4 2011, a 47.3 percent year over year increase. Apple is also the top smartphone vendor for the year with a 19 percent market share. Total smartphone sales in 2011 grew 58 percent year over year and reached a staggering 472 million units sold. FCC seeks to streamline licensing requirements for 800MHz band
A new proposal set forth by the FCC would modify the Commission's licensing requirements of the 800MHz band by replacing its current site-based model with more contemporary geographic guidelines. Commissioners argue the change is needed, as site-based rules were originally established to consider the propagation of analog signals -- now obsolete by anyone's standards. Kodak cleared to get $950m bankruptcy financing
The judge overseeing Kodak's bankruptcy proceedings has approved the company's proposed $950 million financing arrangement between itself and its lenders and bondholders. Kodak filed for Chapter 11 protection in January and sought to use the funds while it sold off some of the 1,100 patents it held to generate cash while it restructured itself and continued to make payroll. NVIDIA sets low outlook, sees Tegra 3 phones by end of April
NVIDIA in a mix of quarterly and yearly results disappointed investors even as it teased quad-core phones coming quickly. During the nine years I spent in Windows Hell[TM] at IBM, WinZip was on every machine I used.
