Lenovo taps former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci to lead new Europe, Middle East and Africa division
It looks like former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci's recent gig as a consultant for Lenovo has worked out pretty well -- Lenovo confirmed today that it's bringing on Lanci in a permanent position as the head of the its new Europe, Middle East and Africa (or EMEA) division. As The Wall Street Journal reports, that move is part of a broader reorganization within the company (going into effect April 2nd), which will see it have four units focused on different regions instead of the current three. Current Lenovo execs will head up the three other divisions.

Xi3's TAND3M software enables two users to tap into a single modular PC
Hard to say how many Xi3 "modular computers" have been moved to date, but enabling a single one to serve two masters might just create a new market for it. The outfit's here in Vegas to introduce its new TAND3M software, described as a program that'll enable two people to simultaneously share and use one Xi3 Modular Computer for all computing functions. The outfit's trumpeting the lower overall cost of implementation, and while the app itself will demand $100, that's far cheaper than paying a few hundred bones for an entirely new rig. In order to take advantage, you'l

Nokia Lumia 900 coming to AT&T, further details expected on Monday
Lookie here -- The New York Times has confirmed that Nokia's much-rumored Lumia 900 (800 shown above) will be coming to AT&T, with official details expected here at CES. There's no word on where it'll be hawked outside of the States, but it looks like T-Mob's Lumia 710 is about to get upstaged. We're told to expect more information here on Monday, and in case you had any questions, Elop was quoted as affirming that no Android plans are in the pipeline. Shocker. As for rumored specifications, there's a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive touchpanel, half a gig of RAM, Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) and an 8-meg

Sony quits OLED TV in the consumer market, we quietly shelve hopes for the XEL-2
Hope you're in the mood to pour one out, because the Daily Yomiuri Online has just confirmed that Sony is giving up the OLED TV in its consumer business. According to the report, it has discontinued production of OLED TV sets for the mainstream market, and while it'll continue selling 'em to its corporate clients, it'll concentrate the home-use TV portion on LCD models. For historians in attendance, they'll no doubt (fondly) recall the XEL-1 -- a devilishly thin personal OLED TV that never stood a chan

China Unicom offers iPhone 4S free with subsidy, really just wants your commitment
The leaders at China Unicom are placing their bets on the iPhone 4S in a very big way. With a new promotion that begins January 13th, the nation's second largest mobile carrier will offer both the 32GB and 16GB versions of Apple's latest iPhone free on-contract. To score the high-end model, consumers must sign a three-year agreement with a minimum monthly cost of 286 yuan ($45). Alternately, those looking to avoid the long-term commitment may pick up the 16GB version on a two-year contract with a minimum price of 386 yuan ($61) per month. With the obvious price differential, one thing is for certain --

Sanho's bantam CloudFTP puts USB storage devices online, streams on battery power and sheer will
Pogoplug, as they say, just got served. Sanho -- the same geniuses responsible for the HyperMac -- is introducing yet another intelligent box here at CES 2012. The diminutive CloudFTP is a battery-powered file server that takes popular USB devices (thumb drives, hard drives, etc.) and then streams 'em to up to three different devices or serves vanilla files to any WiFi device within range. Better still, it's capable of syncing data with iCloud, Dropbox, Box and a slew of other online cloud storage devices, and it'll churn out files for a solid five hours before needing a recharge. There's an ARM9 microprocessor i

Apple faces $1.9b lawsuit for selling unauthorized iBooks
Apple is currently facing a lawsuit in China for allegedly aiding in the sale of illegally published e-books on the iBookstore. The People's Daily reported that nine authors accused Apple of doing nothing to stop bootleggers from publishing 37 works without permission and profiting from it. They contended that Apple owed them the equivalent of nearly $1.9 million in damages, both for letting the publishers through and for profiting from its customary 30 percent cut.

Polaroid launching new tablet, color screen e-reader at CES?
What's this here, then? A sneaky tipster sent of some shots of what looks to be a new Android tab and a color screen e-reader from the photo-shaking folks at Polaroid. Not a lot to go on here, but, fittingly, the company is pushing the photo-taking capabilities of the slate, pitching it as a "tablet + camera," with what appears to be both front and rear cameras / flashes, the latter of which are prominently displayed on the rear of the device. The speaker also seems to get prominent placement, just above the screen. For the record, we whole-heartedly approve of the app selection on the device. On the reader front, we've got what certainly appears to be a color scree

Victorinox to launch 1TB USB / eSATA II flash drive with built-in LCD at CES
Well it looks like everyone's favorite pocketknife company is readying a 1TB combo USB 2.0/eSATA II flash drive for a CES launch next week -- yes, one TERABYTE. From the looks of it, the Victorinox drive will come in black and red finishes with two bodies -- one with a scissor and knife, and a TSA-friendly version without. Besides the optional implements, both drives appear to be virtually identical, with a key ring and plastic clasp to keep the drive safely covered when not in use. Once you've wrapped your head around that gigantic one-terabyte capacity, take a gander at the built-in monochrome LCD, which will be used to display drive c

China trumpets completion of 'world's largest battery energy storage station'

The goal? To provide a "stable solution for transferring vast amounts of renewable electricity safely to the grid on an unprecedented scale." Vuzix designs Smart Glasses to look like sunshades, tout connected transparent display
Vuzix has announced plans to develop a stylish head-mounted display solution in the form of Smart Glasses, through a licensing partnership with Nokia. The yet-unnamed product would integrate a bright, high-contrast display with a pair of seemingly ordinary-looking sunglasses -- sounds like a perfect companion to the ZionEyez in-glasses camera prototype we saw last month. In Vuzix's words:

Vizio's next market? Desktop and laptop PCs
Just when it seems like everyone is running away from the PC business, well known HDTV company Vizio has apparently decided that after dabbling in lightbulbs, it's a great time to get in. Chief Technology Officaer Matt McRae revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that it will introduce two desktop all-in-ones and three notebooks at CES next week, the former which probably explain that sleek display it flashed during its 2012 Rose Bowl advertisement. As usual, the focus is on value pricing, as he promised they would arrive by June (we're still wai

OLPC XO 3.0 tablet to show at CES with Android, Sugar
The One Laptop Per Child project's long-in-waiting XO-3 tablet, now called the XO 3.0, will get its formal unveiling at CES. The eight-inch, 1024x768 slate will have a ruggedized body to survive rural schools and, like the original notebooks, consumes very little power. OLPC notes that it can take energy from a solar panel and that a hand crank can give it 10 minutes of power for every minute of turning, letting it work even in remote areas where electricity isn't guaranteed.

Vizio to jump into PCs at CES, plans to undercut Apple
Vizio on Friday revealed that it would be getting into the PC market as of CES. A work in progress for two years, the strategy outlined to the Wall Street Journal would include all-in-one desktops and thin notebooks. Details are vague, but the all-in-one would hide the computer in its base, notebooks would range from 14 to 15.6 inches, and designs would try to avoid an industrial look.

OLPC outs XO 3.0 tablet at last, will make its debut at CES
OLPC's XO 3.0 tablet has been in the works for what seems like forever, and now it's finally ready to be unveiled at CES. Nicholas Negroponte apparently either found the unbreakable screens he was looking for or simply decided the crowds at CES 2012 should get to see the new slate first. It's powered by a Marvell ARM PXA618 SoC that runs Android or Linux and has the same Pixel Qi display seen in other OLPCs. Plus, it has special charging circuitry so it can top up its battery using solar cells and hand crank

Tesla's Model X SUV reportedly pushed to February, first deliveries coming in 'late 2013'
So much for December, eh? While Tesla's been talking up an electric sport utility vehicle for months on end, it's evidently harder than expected to actually deliver it. Shocking, we know. The latest hit in the saga comes via GigaOM, who has confirmed with Tesla CEO Elon Musk that the Model X will finally -- finally -- see a public unveiling on February 9th. Details beyond that aren't yet known, but

IT sector to spend 50 percent more on Apple gear in 2012
Apple's acceptance in the enterprise sector (leading with the iPad and iPhone) has been one of the more surprising changes in the corporate landscape over the past two years, but even more remarkable is data that shows that the revolution appears to be gaining strength. A new global survey done by Forrester Research indicates that the enterprise sector will increase its spending on Apple products by more than 50 percent in 2012.

Visualized: How Verizon preps LTE and 3G services for CES
With the population of Las Vegas growing by a few hundred thousand each year during CES, cell phone carriers begin planning boosted coverage weeks before the crowds arrive. We noticed a temporary cell site parked near the Las Vegas Convention Center, and asked if we could pop in to get an idea of how AT&T, Sprint and Verizon plan to accommodate all those extra devices. Fusion-io breaks one billion IOPS barrier, pauses to congratulate itself
Let's get a little perspective, shall we? Corsair's Force Series 3 SSD -- a wholly awesome product in its own right -- is capable of hitting around 85,000 IOPS. On a good day. Fusion-io has been pushing the NAND storage envelope for years now, but even its recently-unveiled ioDrives deliver between 700,000 and 900,000 IOPS. Today, however, the company's pausing to pat itself squarely on the back -- and rightfully so. It mana

Apple to get tax refund, but is rebuffed by CA top court
A tax refund issue dating back to 1989 has been resolved in Apple's favor by the state of California's Supreme Court, but Apple's accompanying request for a change in tax status for multinational companies like itself was denied, meaning Apple and others will not see huge tax breaks in the state for "repatriating" foreign earnings back to the US. The case was specific to Apple's overseas earnings in 1989, but has implications for companies generally, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

TUAW Best of 2011 wrap-up and editor picks
It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better.
The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all o

Say 'ta ta' to the Tata eMO: the $20,000 EV you'll never set eyes on
This story ends before it even starts, but it's nice to look at what could have been, should destiny -- or a corporate boardroom -- have taken a different course. Tata Motors, maker of the Nano EV, has been working on new concept -- the eMO -- that it already tells us, we'll never see. It claims the nifty looking car would do 100 imaginary miles per charge and a theoretical 65 mph top speed. It would cost a fictitious 20,000 dollars, thanks to lots of non-existent weight being saved through thrift design principles -- such as space saving suicide doors. There

Why can't navigation apps be fun?
With all the holidays, many of us TUAWians spent more time on the road over the past few weeks than we normally do. And when it comes to tech-savvy bloggers, more time on the road means more time with navigation apps. And more time with navigation apps made us ever more aware of our lingering frustrations with the most popular apps.
Sure Navigon and TomTom will get us from here to there, but they represent not just the lower end of design possibility, but the most Windows NT-like user experience. (We say that as an insult. We're Apple bloggers.) We're talking Soviet-era usability.
On a platform that sports such shining examples of beauty and design, including Omni's suite of tools, Apple's brilliant in-house offerings, an

Find My Car Smarter uses Bluetooth Smart to locate your car
One time, I spent hours wandering the parking lot after a concert. I really wish I had marked the location of my car and not relied on my memory to navigate. Next time I find myself in that situation, I'm going to use Find My Car Smarter. It's a Kickstarter project from FMC Smart which automatically marks your location every time you park your car.
The system uses a low-power Bluetooth Smart device (shown below), an iOS app and a Bluetooth 4.0 compatible phone like the iPhone 4S. The Bluetooth Smart device is a small USB dongle that fits in a standard car charger. It plugs into your car's 12V accessory charging port and stays there. The iOS app, Find My Car Smarter, connects to the Bluetooth Smart device and runs in the background

Motorola warns fall sales below expectations, blames Apple
Motorola sent out a warning late Friday that its fall performance wouldn't meet. It would still see "modest profitability" based on revenue of $3.4 billion, but it would see just 10.5 million phones shipped, 5.3 million of which would be smartphones. The number would be a sharp contraction from the 11.6 million shipped in the summer, when it moved 4.8 million smartphones.
