AU Optronics, Idemitsu Kosan announce 'strategic alliance' on OLED development
The OLED-infused future is fast approaching in Taiwan, where AU Optronics today announced a "strategic alliance" with Japanese firm Idemitsu Kosan. Apple copes with OS X 10.7.3 'CUI,' iMessage bugs
Some OS X 10.7.3 users are reportedly suffering from an odd application crash bug. Affected people will see apps crash often, with the unusual twist of error messages that feature the word "CUI" stamped over them. A 9to5Mac source claims that the company has already sent out an email to a v10.7.3 test group, asking them if they've run into the problem and requesting bug reports if so.

Tim Cook focuses on charity during Town Hall meeting
Apple held an all-employee Town Hall meeting a little while ago after the earnings call, and The Verge is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook took quite a bit of time during the meeting to point out Apple's charitable contributions to the world. He said that Apple has given $50 million to Stanford hospitals, and over $50 million to the Project RED effort (to help fight AIDS in Africa), making Apple that fund's largest contributor. Huawei's MediaPad joins AT&T's '4G' army, pauses to rethink possible
Ready to rethink possible, tablet-style? AT&T announced today that it'll be getting its 4G (well, HSPA+, that is) paws on Huawei's MediaPad, roughly half a year after the Android tablet made its debut. The seven-incher offers up a 1.2GHz dual-core processor courtesy of Qualcomm, front and rear facing cameras and Honeycomb, with ICS still on the horizon. Google: we've scanned for Android viruses since 2011
Google's Android engineering VP Hiroshi Lockheimer has detailed a process of screening for malware at Android Market that it has quietly been running for the past year. Known as Bouncer, it automatically scans both incoming and existing apps for recognizable malicious code. The routine also runs the apps themselves and checks for hostile behavior in practice, hoping to catch apps with suspicious behavior.

VeriSign revealed to have suffered repeated security breaches in 2010
It took some digging through more than 2,000 pages of SEC documents, but Reuters revealed today that VeriSign was attacked "repeatedly" by hackers in 2010, and that some undisclosed information was stolen from the company. The key danger there is the DNS records that the company manages -- which ensure that URLs take you to the correct website -- but VeriSign says that its executives "do not believe these attacks breached the servers that support our Domain Name System network." As Reuters notes, however, the company isn't ruling anything out. Former Xbox Live marketing exec joins Apple
Apple conquered the smartphone and tablet market, and it may be turning its sights on the gaming market next. According to a report from MCV, Robin Burrowes, the Xbox Live marketing manager for EMEA, has left Microsoft to join Apple. Burrowes will supposedly take over marketing for the App Store in Europe. Apple hasn't commented on this report, so this is still a rumor. If this is true, Burrowes will become the third high-profile gaming hire to join Apple in the past year. comScore: iPhone now matching Android in growth rate
The sustained effect of the iPhone 4S launch has kept the iPhone growing at the same pace as Android in the US. Google's platform grew a collective 2.5 points over the fall to 47.3 percent, but Apple nearly matched it with a 2.2 percent hike to 29.6 percent. As with much of the past year, the two were only really drawing from other platforms, with the BlackBerry down nearly three points to 16 percent.

AMD's new plan: focus on tablets, cloud computing and developing markets
Chipzilla has long been atop the PC chip manufacturing mountain, with AMD running a rather distant second. That's why AMD's new top man, Rory Read, plans to move the company in a more mobile direction. An escaped internal video for Nokia staff intercepted on Thursday has shown that Windows Phone 8 should be a massive leap, most of all in hardware. Apple seeds Safari 5.1.4 beta to developers
Apple has begun seeding a beta Safari 5.1.4 release to developers. Mac and Windows distributions are available, although if not on Snow Leopard the Mac version requires OS X 10.7.3. The Lion and Snow Leopard disk images measure about 44MB and 47MB, respectively, while the Windows ZIP file is 109MB.

US government wants schools to embrace digital textbooks
Although they haven't exactly explained how school systems or parents are going to pay for iPads or other tablets for every student, the US government is pushing a new initiative to move from standard printed textbooks to digital textbooks within the next five years. While it's good to see that a focus on digital textbooks is finally at hand, it's going to take more than a press release, five years and a "playbook" to make the transition happen. Cook revealed charitable contributions at Town Hall meeting
Another topic discussed at Apple's "town hall" meeting last week was the company's charitable contributions, according to sources for The Verge. CEO Tim Cook reportedly stated that Apple had donated $50 million to Stanford's hospitals, split evenly between a new main building and a new children's hospital. Kindle Fire users get more media, not as happy as iPad users
Amazon Kindle Fire owners get more digital content, but aren't as happy as their iPad-using counterparts, ChangeWave found Thursday. About 29 percent said they would spend more in the next 90 days, a 10-point lead over those who didn't have the Android tablet. Even so, only 54 percent said they were "very satisfied" with the device, or well under the 74 percent of iPad owners who were similarly happy.

Wenn man sich mal kurz vor Augen halten möchte, wie sehr Smartphones mittlerweile den Weltmarkt bestimmen: Apple hat zum ersten Mal im vierten Quartal 2011 LG vom dritten Platz des Handy-Gesamtmarkts gestoßen und befindet sich jetzt, obwohl sie nur iPhones verkaufen, auf Platz 3. Der Gesamtmarktanteil ist mit 8,7 Prozent immer noch weit hinter den Marktführern Nokia (erster) und Samsung, Apple hat aber mit einem Anstieg von 128,4% über das letzte Jahr definitiv die rasanteste Steigerungsrate hingelegt. Apple and AT&T are leading computer and phone support in conditions that are still on the decline, Vocalabs found in a pair of studies of phone help quality. Apple was still out in front by a significant margin in computers, with 54 percent very satisfied to 49 percent of HP owners and 44 at Dell. Das oben abgebildete Samsung Smartphone wurde von Eldar Murtazin via Twitter verbreitet und soll ein Samsung Handy zum MWC sein, auf dem Ice Cream Sandwich läuft. Die Ähnlichkeit zum S II ist unverkennbar, aber ob es nun das S II Plus ist, weiss kein Mensch. For the past few weeks, I have run into a problem with links to Apple.com coming up 404 "not found." Specifically, these have all been links to pages on http://support.apple.com/. For example, this morning I did a Google search for 10.7.3 combo. One of the first results was a link to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 which came up 404. Key Xbox Live marketing exec leaves Microsoft for Apple
Apple has recruited an important executive from Microsoft's Xbox division, Robin Burrowes, reports say. Until this week, Burrowes was in control of Xbox Live marketing for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region. At Apple, he will be responsible for marketing the App Store for iTunes Europe. Other highlights on his resume include work on Microsoft's MSN, and time with music and movie retailer HMV.

Seagate expects flood-related hard drive shortages to continue
Seagate took some time out from its busy earnings reporting schedule to address supply concerns stemming from the recent devastating floods in Thailand. The storage manufacturer announced that hard drives supply will likely fall 150 million units short of demand by year's end. While Seagate's own factories weren't directly hit, suppliers for the company were impacted -- as were competitors, like Western Digital. The events have also had a more positive impact on Seagate, however -- as a result of the floods, a number of large buyers have entered into long-term agreements, according to the company.

IDC: Apple overtakes LG to become third-largest phone maker
New IDC data has shown Apple's 37 million iPhone sales making it the third-largest cellphone maker in the world. More than doubling its shipments, in tandem with LG nearly cutting its shipments in half to 17.7 million, saw it move up a spot and stake out 8.7 percent of the entire cellphone space. The change in position carried through for all of 2011, with Apple's 93.2 million iPhones putting it at six percent of all phones sold that year while LG was down to 5.7 percent, or 88.1 million.

'Strange' event may precede iPad 3, iPhone 5 seen at WWDC
Two tentative rumors on Thursday claimed to be outlining Apple's schedule for its 2012 iPad and iPhone updates. iPod nano: Neue Version mit Kamera soll in wenigen Monaten erscheinen
Laut der Meldung von M.I.C. Gadget hatte das zwei Monate alte Vorserienmodell, welches auf den gestrigen Bildern abgebildet ist, Probleme mit der verwendeten 2-Megapixel-Kamera. So soll das damals genutzte Kamera-Modul Schwierigkeiten mit einer Überbelichtung aller Bilder gehabt haben.
Während es vor zwei Monaten noch Probleme mit der Hardware gab, soll es auf der Software-Seite bedeutend besser aussehen. Die Benutzerführung sei beinahe Final, so die Quelle.

Software Update: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 [Download-Links]
Apple hat den Löwen aktualisiert. OS X Lion erschien gestern in Version 10.7.3, und ist via Softwareaktualisierung verfügbar (Apfel -> Softwareaktualisierung).
Das neuste Update behebt unter anderem das WLAN-Problem nach dem Aufwachen des Ruhemodus. Unter der letzten Version des Betriebssystems musste man manuell neu verbinden, dieses Problem sollte nun behoben sein. Im Update inbegriffen ist auch Safari 5.1.3.

New Sony CEO had to axe three iPad rival projects
A profile of Sony's soon-to-be CEO Kaz Hirai has revealed that he may have been instrumental to getting a credible iPad rival into the market. The Wall Street Journal look showed that, under Sony's traditional structure of independently operating divisions, four different segments of the company were developing their own tablets. Fujifilm X-Pro1 gets prices through Amazon preorders
Fujifilm's X-Pro1 interchangeable lens camera may have had its US prices slip out through Amazon starting to take pre-orders. The X-Pro1 body shows as costing $1,700 by itself, making it one of the more expensive non-SLRs available. Lenses are more in line with expectations and have the 18mm f2.0 and 35mm f1.4 primes each costing $600, while the 60mm f2.4 macro could cost slightly more at $650.

Acer: ultrabooks to merge with netbooks in under two years
Acer chairman JT Wang made more comments at his company's Lunar New Year event that outlined more of how Acer planned to survive Apple and the computer market. Apple has apparently complied with a recent ruling by the Italian government that the company did not do enough, when selling its extended one-year warranties in stores, to let customers know that its products already came with a two-year warranty, as per consumer laws there. Apple Store in Pasadena reopening this weekend
I just got notice from Apple that the store in the Old Pasadena retail district is re-opening this weekend, after an almost yearlong expansion project. The company even opened a temporary store a little bit down the street from the location, as it worked to expand the main store, adding a second level and lots more space for showing off Apple's products. But apparently the work is all done: The store will reopen this Saturday at 10 a.m., and the public will be able to enter and see what changes were made.
