Google said building huge facilities for secret projects

An investigation into Google's public records has hinted that the company is planning large expansions that would be incubators for multiple secret projects. The Mercury News sleuthing found that Google was spending over $120 million in construction around its Montain Vew headquarters for both public and private work. Secret projects would reportedly play a part, including for the Android@Home wireless audio device and Google's well-known but still secretive Project X labs.

comScore: webmail use sinking as mobile use takes over

As part of a larger study, comScore has shown that e-mail is making a large shift away from the web. Among teens and those aged 18 to 24, webmail use dropped by about a third in December from where it was one year earlier. Microsoft Store hacked in India, passwords stored in plain text

Frequenters of India's online Microsoft Store were briefly greeted with the suspicious visage of a Guy Fawkes mask this morning, following a hack that compromised the site's user database. According to WPSauce, Microsoft Store India's landing page was briefly taken over by a hacker group called Evil Shadow Team, who, in addition to putting a new face on Windows products, revealed that user passwords were saved in plain text. The group's motivations are unknown, though the hacked page warned that an "unsafe system will be baptized." The store is now offline, suggesting that Microsoft may have regained control. AT&T's efforts for shared data plans came closer to fruition Sunday after leaks from its Telegence account management system. Spinnennetz-Uhr von Tokyoflash: Durchsichtig, aber wie gewohnt schwer zu durchschauen

Filed under: armbanduhren Bevor ihr Kopfschmerzen bekommt: in der Galerie wird das Zifferblatt erklärt. Ausserdem ist das knifflige Zeitablesen bei dem "Spider" getauften Armbanduhrkonzept sowieso reine Nebensache. Das Spinnennetz-Design dient vor allem dazu, den durchsichtigen LCD-Screen zur Geltung zu bringen. Die Idee tauchte bei Tokyoflash natürlich schon früher auf, war aber bisher technisch nicht umsetzbar. Das soll sich jetzt ändern, und wir sind uns sicher, diese Ankündigung wird für eine Menge durchsichtige Fan-Entwürfe sorgen. Auch wenn es noch eine Weile dauern kann, bis die letzten technischen Hürden genommen sind.

Ursprünglich hatten wir ja mal ein 10-Zoll-Kindle Fire erwartet, dann kam das Gerücht von einer 8,9-Zoll-Version auf, und das wird nun von Boy Genius Report wieder aufgegriffen: Amazon plane, im Sommer neben einem verbesserten 7-Zoll-Kindle Fire ein 9-Zoll-Tablet rauszubringen. Das Weihnachtsgeschäft lief für Amazon nicht so gut wie erwartet, aber vielleicht geben ja neue Tabletgrößen den notwendigen Schub.

Leak: Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 soll noch diesen Monat rauskommen

Filed under: Smartphones Noch ein Phone, das inoffiziell die Runde macht: Das Galaxy Mini 2 von Samsung ist klein, und auch seine Specs sind bescheiden. Es soll mit einem 3,3 Zoll großen Display mit einer Auflösung von 480 x 320 Pixel ausgestattet sein, mit Gingerbread laufen und einen 800MHz-Prozessor an Bord haben. Mit dabei sind ausserdem eine 3 Megapixel-Kamera und 3GB interner Speicher. Rauskommen soll das Galaxy Mini 2 laut GSM Arena im Februar, also vielleicht sogar noch vor dem Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

iPad 3: Leere Lager machen Hoffnung

Besonders die Lagerbestände für das beliebte iPad 2 mit WiFi und 3G verknappen sich, melden laut 9to5mac einige Händler. Bei Verkäufern in Großbritannien seien die Geräte schon ganz offiziell als “ausverkauft” gekennzeichnet. Die lediglich mit WiFi ausgestatteten Modelle seien jedoch nicht betroffen. Late last year, reports of hacked iTunes accounts and unauthorized purchases surfaced on Apple support forums. People complained their accounts were compromised and their gift card balances drained by in-app purchases.
