Umweltkontrollen: Apple prüft chinesische Lieferanten
Apple versucht nun nach den vermehrt negativen Berichten zu den Unternehmen der Lieferkette das Image etwas aufzupolieren und kündigte nun an, Umweltkontrollen bei den chinesischen Lieferanten durchführen zu lassen. Asiatische Umweltaktivisten bestätigten dies der Zeitung USA Today und gaben zudem bekannt, dass Apple unabhängigen Kontrollen zugestimmt haben soll. Im März 2012 sollen die Überprüfungen dann starten.Dabei konzentrieren sich die Kontrolleure vor allem auf die Auswirkungen der Fabriken auf die Umwelt. Demzufolge wird in der näheren Umgebung das Wasser und der Boden auf bestimmte belastende Stoffe kontrolliert, wodurch eventuelle Zusammenhänge geklärt werden sollen, die die Umweltaktivisten anmerken. 2011 Macs get EFI Firmware Update

Everything Everywhere promises 'small-scale LTE launch' in UK by the end of 2012
Everything Everywhere's spilled more details on its 4G hopes and dreams. That £1.5 billion investment is aiming to get a small scale LTE launch by the end of the year -- subject to Ofcom's say-so. ASUS MWC teaser video hints at possible hi-res tablet display?
What's not to love about a short video insinuating something marvelous may be coming soon -- especially if it means a hi-res screen on a tablet, à la that purported Retina Display we saw a few days back. NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 chips get LTE support, radio makers GCT and Renesas on board
After yesterday's clarification that Tegra 3's architecture will now be known as 4-PLUS-1, NVIDIA's got something a little meatier to share. HTML5 is supposed to set the web free. Free to deliver and shape online media in any web browser. MetroPCS Q4 results are in: increased revenue, slowing growth
The nation's fifth largest wireless provider -- MetroPCS -- has checked in with its Q4 2011 financials, and on the whole, the company looks to be doing quite well. Metro reported $1.2 billion in consolidated quarterly revenues and $362 million in earnings, an increase of 16% and 15% when compared to the fourth quarter of 2010. Lumus OE-31: Transparentes Minidisplay

Lumus hatte auf der CES ja schon ein paar durchsichtige Displays gezeigt, aber mit der neuen "Optical Engine" wollen sie jetzt jede Art von Rahmen bedienen. Die kann man in Brillen, Ski-Brillen oder auch futuristischer kleinere Displays wie oben integrieren und damit ein 640x360 Bild in einem 19 Grad Winken projizieren, das wie ien 40-Zoll Bildschirm aus 3 Metern Entfernung wirken soll. Die Möglichkeiten sind vorgezeichnet: Navigation unter dem Motorradhelm oder auf der Ski-Piste, etc. Denn mit nur 10 Gramm Gewicht ist das Modul ziemlich universell einsetzbar. Wann wir Produkte damit auf dem Markt sehen ist noch nicht klar, sie könnten aber zum WMC zumindest mal ein Demo zeigen. Nach dem Break erst mal ein paar Videos.

ComScore report finds 42 percent of US mobile users have smartphones, Android at nearly 50 percent
ComScore released its annual Digital Future in Focus report earlier this month, offering new findings on things like email and web use, and it's now out with its latest Mobile Future in Focus report, which provides a year-end wrap of mobile device use both in the US and around the world. Apple introduces Mastered For iTunes tracks
Apple's trying to differentiate iTunes from its competitors with a new "Mastered for iTunes" section that's filled with high-fidelity, ear-pleasing music. These tracks are processed using a set of guidelines and tools that'll maintain as much of the sound quality of the original, uncompressed file as possible. OMAP 5 vs. Quad-Core A9: Benchmark-Poserei

Der OMAP 5 von Texas Instruments hat sich jetzt mal ganz offiziell in einem Benchmark einem A9 Quad-Core Chip gestellt und laut Texas Instruments ist er natürlich um einiges schneller. Mit nur 800MHz gegenüber den 1,3GHz A9 Konkurrenten (wir vermuten ein Tegra 3) schaffte er die EEMBC BrowsingBench in 95 Sekunden, der A9 brauchte 201. Das alles hilft natürlich nicht darüber hinweg, dass der Tegra 3 auf dem Markt ist, der OMAP5 erst 2013 kommen soll. Batterieleistung wäre auch noch eine weitere wichtige Frage. Qualcomm erwartet 5G WiFi Upgrade Ende des Jahres
Wir wären auch bereit für ein noch schnelleres WiFi. Laut Rob Chandhok von Qualcomm wird der nächste Sprung um einiges schneller gehen als beim letzten und 802.11ac soll Ende des Jahres, spätestens Anfang nächsten Jahres dann gleich auf Routern und Endgeräten vertreten sein. Nicht wie bislang nach und nach. Vorgestellt wurden Prototypen ja schon auf der CES. 802.11ac läuft auch auf dem 5GHz Band mit 80 Megahertz allerdings und einer 4-fach effizienteren Modulation. Maximal 1,3 Gigabit sollen möglich sein, bis wir da wirklich ankommen werden aber noch mindestens zwei Jahre ins Land gehen.

NPD: Apple grabs over a quarter of the mobile PC business in Q4 2011 (including iPads), HP tops with laptops
Just what is a "mobile PC" these days? According to market research firm NPD, that category now includes both tablets and laptops -- and by that definition, Apple is unsurprisingly way ahead of its competitors. Based on its preliminary numbers, Apple shipped 23.4 million mobile PCs in the fourth quarter of 2011 (nearly 80 percent of which were iPads), which was enough to snag a market share of 26.6 percent (and keep it in the top spot for the year). In contrast, the four companies rounding out the top five relied almost entirely on laptops to fill their numbers, with HP coming in at just under a 10 percent market share, followed by Dell, Acer and Lenovo. Wir hören nicht all zu oft von ZTE, aber es scheint so als ist dieses MWC der Startschuss für viel mehr Konkurrenz auf dem Smartphonemarkt. Nach Fujitsu und Panasonic will ZTE jetzt groß auftrumpfen und gleich 8 Smartphone Modelle vorstellen. Und eben nicht nur kleine, sondern auch ein Flaggschiff mit Quad-Core-Model ist dabei. Wir wissen bislang vom PF200 mit 1,5GHz Prozessor und 960x540 4,3-Zoll Screen, dem N910 mit 1,2GHz und 800x400 Auflösung. Und beide haben ICE. Mimosa X ist das Tegra 2 Dual-Core Smartphone mit 4,3-Zoll Display und bald werden wir wohl auch genaueres über das Tegra 3 Smartphone von ZTE wissen. Just when you needed one more reason to carry on loving Windows Vista, Microsoft has gone and increased its customer support period. An extension has also been granted to Windows 7, which will get a full ten years of support instead of the usual five. Shanghai court sides with Apple, iPad sales to continue
There is some good news for Apple and the iPad in China. The Shanghai Pudong New Area People's Court ruled in favor of Apple and denied an injunction request from Proview that would have banned sales of the tablet device in the Chinese city. Both the local Xinmin Evening News and Reuters confirmed this decision. This Shanghai ruling is a win for Apple, but a bigger decision, that could decide the fate of the iPad in China, looms ahead of the Cupertino company. Apple recently lost a case in this battle when the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court sided with Proview and its claim to the iPad trademark. Apple appealed to the Higher People's Court of Guangdong and hearings in this trial will begin on February 29th. I

Earlier this week, ABC News aired a Nightline report that explored the Shenzhen Foxconn factory where Apple products are assembled. Now, Apple, Foxconn, and the Fair Labor Association (FLA) have all issued statements in response to the report. After having seen the Samsung Rugby Smart poke its head out from time to time, Samsung's new rugged smartphone is officially hitting AT&T stores on March 4th. Kampf ums iPad: Chinesische Richter entscheiden für Apple
Nachdem wir gestern noch von den Streitigkeiten vor dem Gericht in Shanghai berichteten, gibt es heute eine Meldung, dass sich die Richter zugunsten von Apple entschieden haben. Ein möglicher Verkaufsstopp in Shanghai ist damit vorerst vom Tisch.
Wurde die Verhandlung nach Auseindersetzungen im Gerichtssaal in Shanghai zunächst noch als vertagt beschrieben, meldet Reuters heute, dass sich das Gericht zugunsten von Apple entschieden habe.

Esperanto isn't just something Microsoft uses to tease Google for abandoning video codecs, it's a legitimate, manufactured language. Created in the late 1800's by Dr. Ludwig L. T-Mobile lost more customers in Q4, will launch LTE in 2013 with AWS spectrum from AT&T

Even a couple of months after the fact, I have to say that iFrogz' Boost speaker was one of the most interesting things I saw at CES this year. It's a little box speaker that works, more or less, like magic. There are no wires or hookups necessary. All you do is set the Boost speaker down, put your iPhone right on top of it as seen above, and then the speaker somehow amplifies your iPhone. The California Attorney General has struck a deal with the world's major app store opperators that will see new privacy policy standards put in place. Apple, Google, Microsoft, HP, RIM and Amazon have all agreed to require any software that uses personal information to provide a privacy policy that can be viewed in the store before an app is downloaded.
