Boxee desktop app being removed from servers tonight, get it while you can
We knew that the Boxee desktop app's days were numbered, we just didn't realize how numbered. It was only the day after Christmas that we learned version 1.5 would be the last to ship for Linux, Windows and OS X. Now, with January coming to a close, its life is officially being snuffed out. Tonight, as you flip the calendar to February, Boxee will be busy purging its servers of the installable media center software. Apple updates Airport stations and Time Capsule, brings bug fixes and iCloud support
It looks as if the Final Cut Pro X update wasn't the only software refresh Cupertino folks had in store for us. In this particular case, it's the company's networking and backup goods -- also known as Airport Express, Extreme and Time Capsule -- that are on the receiving end of the virtual enhancements. The 802.11n stations are getting a fix that solves "an issue with wireless performance," while the capsule is seeing some much needed iCloud support. Macworld | iWorld attendance steady in 2012; many newbies in the crowd
Attendance at this year's Macworld | iWorld event was approximately the same as last year's Macworld Expo -- about 25,000 people -- according to IDG World Expo, the group that organizes the "ultimate fan event." Amazon triples Kindle sales at cost of 58% profit drop
Amazon posted results Tuesday that outlined the costs of pushing the Kindle Fire. The online shop's Kindle device sales almost tripled, at about 177 percent over the past year. Its net profit dropped 58 percent to $177 million, however, underscoring how it had sold the Fire at a loss to get device share.

Valve opens up Steam Mobile beta to general public
After a brief period of exclusivity, Valve has opened up the Steam Mobile beta to the general public. Previously just a select group of Steam users were allowed to try the beta, although invites handed out to testers gradually increased the userbase. Amazon announces Q4 2011 results: sales jump to $17.43 billion, but profits drop 58 percent
Amazon's just announced its Q4 earnings, and it's a bit of a mixed bag. While net sales were up 35 percent year-over-year to $17.43 billion, net income dropped a hefty 58 percent to $177 million, or 38 cents a share -- that's off analysts' expectations, who were looking for sales in the neighborhood of $18.3 billion and earnings of 17 cents a share. Neil Young: Steve Jobs preferred vinyl, wanted new format
Musician Neil Young in an interview at the D: Dive Into Media conference made the contentious claim that Apple's late chief Steve Jobs would have been pushing hard for improved audio quality. The "Needle and the Damage Done" creator claimed that Jobs, despite creating the iPod for digital music, preferred to listen to vinyl records at home. Apple's co-founder would have allegedly been working on higher quality devices, not just formats like Apple Lossless, to improve audio quality.

Steam mobile beta now open to all, still of questionable utility
If you were dismayed to find yourself waiting in the queue for a beta invite after downloading the mobile Steam client the other day, fret no more -- the trial is now open to all who desire entry. Of course, it's still really just a companion to the desktop shop and not a must-have mobile gaming market. Norton launches beta of Identify Safe cloud service
Norton has begun a beta of a new cloud-based security service, Identify Safe. The technology is meant to save and sync private web form data across multiple browsers and devices, primarily logins and credit card information. So far the only computer platform to support the Identify Safe client is Windows, but test apps are already available for iOS and Android.

Foxconn embarks on Brazilian, Chinese expansion plans
Foxconn is planning to build five extra factories in Brazil, according to São Paulo's Secretary of Planning and Development of the State, Julio Semeghini. Each is expected to be manned by about 1,000 workers, and produce iPads, notebooks, and general electronics. The actual locations of the factories have yet to be decided, although São Paulo is claimed to be campaigning heavily.

Apple appeals loss of iPad trademark bid in China
Apple has appealed the rejection of a lawsuit in an attempt to claim the iPad trademark for itself in China. A quietly submitted and just now discovered January 5 filing with the Higher People's Court in Guangdong has challenged the idea that Proview still had its trademarks after a Taiwan branch sold rights to UK intellectual property holding company, IP Applications. The appeal not only wants the trademark given to Apple but for court costs of four million yuan, or about $633,693, to be covered by Proview.

Daily Mac App: Saturn
I've just spent a pleasant hour exploring Saturn, which is free for a short time in the Mac App Store. The GUI is based on LCARS (Library Computer Access/Retrieval System) featured on some of the Star Trek shows and films. The app has a massive amount of data, and it's more than 1 GB to download. What you get are hundreds of images of Saturn and its moons, plus screens and screens of information and diagrams. There's truly a huge treasure trove of topics covered here. Visually, the app is a treat, and it's easy to figure out how to navigate, even if you're not a Star Trek fan. I wasn't wild about the sound effects every time I clicked on something, but they can easily be muted. Author

Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx review
Most of today's smartphones, especially those of the LTE-enabled persuasion, have earned a bad rap for exceptionally bad battery life, with large displays and hungry radios that suck the juice out faster than a three year-old can down a CapriSun. The race to construct the thinnest phones on the market doesn't help much either, since whittling down handsets results in less space for generously sized battery packs. EU plans to cut roaming costs much deeper
The European Union continues its battle against high operators and their high roaming rates. The new measures, headed up by German politician Angelika Niebler, are calling for even steeper reductions, Reuters found. Compared to the reductions outlined last year by European Commissioner Neelie Kroes, who called for a one-minute call costing 24 cents when abroad in Europe, the new law would price the same cost at 15 cents.

Compressor 4.0.2 tweaks marker, export settings
Apple has posted Compressor 4.0.2, an update of its export utility for Final Cut Pro X. The new version makes just a handful of changes, for instance setting markers as chapter markers by default. Uncompressed 8-bit and 10-bit 4:2:2 have been added to the export settings list, and in a related improvement, transcoding uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 should be faster.

Foxconn plans to build five Brazilian factories to produce Apple products
Apple relies on electronics assembly firm Foxconn to build iPads and iPhones in China. Now Foxconn is reportedly planning to build five new factories in Brazil to help meet the demand for Apple products. There's already one plant cranking out iPads and iPhones, and each of the new factories is expected to have about a thousand workers. The exact locations of the new plants have not yet been decided, with officials from the Brazilian government and Foxconn planning on meeting after the Chinese New Year. Witness 2 adds more iOS features to security monitoring
Orbicule has released Witness 2, a major upgrade of the company's Mac-based security software. The app uses webcams connected to a Mac as motion sensors, and pushes out any photos or video out to a web app, as well as an optional iOS app. The v2 update adds two key iOS-related features, such as the ability to watch live images from any Mac in an alarm system. Mozilla posts finished Firefox 10
Mozilla has released finished versions of Firefox 10 for both Windows PCs and Macs this week. Changes, according to the release notes, include a Forward navigation button that doesn't show up until users hit the Back button first, included APIs for viewing web apps in full-screen mode, and anti-aliasing for WebGL graphics. Likewise new is an Extended Support Release that allows enterprises to only download security updates and stay on the same version for seven releases.

AMD puts out less extreme Radeon HD 7950
AMD has hoped to corner the more widely accessible range of high-end video cards Tuesday by unveiling the Radeon HD 7950. It trims back slightly from the range-leading 7970 with 1,792 visual processing cores instead of 2,048, 112 texture units instead of 128, and both 800MHz core and 1.25GHz memory clock speeds versus the 925MHz and 1.38GHz of its counterpart. China Telecom to start selling the iPhone 4S before March
According to a report in China Daily, China Telecom may become the second Chinese wireless carrier to carry the iPhone 4S. The carrier reportedly released a press release on Tuesday with the big news. "China Telecom has already started preparatory work for the launch of the iPhone 4S," says the press release. The CDMA carrier has the three operating licenses it needs from the government and could start selling the iPhone 4S as early as February. Sudoku Watch ist gar nicht so fies und kryptisch

Hier kommt das nächste Armbanduhrenkonzept aus dem Tokyoflash Design Studio, das bei ordentlich positiver Resonanz in Produktion gehen könnte: die Sudoku Watch. Dieser Chronometer dürfte polarisieren, genau wie die Vorliebe bzw. das Unverständnis für die Zahlentüftelei die Menschheit in Fans und Kostverächter teilt. Dabei ist das Uhrzeitablesen mit der Tüfteluhr gar nicht so fies, wie man das zunächst meinen könnte, es sind nämlich bloß 6 Felder im Neunerblock auf dem Touchscreen frei, aus denen sich dann die Zeit in Stunden, Minuten und Sekunden ergibt. Aber weitere Modi für Sudoku-Fanatiker einzuführen sollte ja kein Problem darstellen.

Daily iPad App: Paper Monsters
I've found that iOS isn't the best platform (so to speak) for platformers. I love games like Mario and Sonic, where you drive a little character around, jumping between platforms and collecting goodies. The lack of physical buttons on Apple's touch screens (and let's face it: cheaper production values) make it hard to pull off a great platformer. Often times developers are forced to cut corners or really stretch to generate new ideas. Not so with Paper Monsters (US$.0.99, universal). Crescent Moon's latest is a traditional platform game (complete with double jumps and warp pipes), and it plays that role perfectly. Germany keeps Apple ban on original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
A Dusseldorf appeals court ruled Tuesday to uphold Apple's requested preliminary ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in its original form. The decision, which also covers the Galaxy Tab 8.9, is unusual in not working based on Apple's community design rights but on a breach of German unfair competition laws. EU-Kommission untersucht möglichen Patentmissbrauch durch Samsung

Fujitsu slashes profit target by 42 percent, blames Thai floods
NEC revealed its financial woes to the world yesterday and now Fujitsu is doing the same. The Japanese computer giant originally expected to make ¥60 billion ($790 million) in the fiscal year ending March 31st, but its latest estimate suggests ¥35 billion ($460 million) may be closer to the mark. Düsseldorfer Oberlandesgericht bestätigt Verkaufsverbot des Galaxy Tab 10.1
Im August konnte Apple vor dem Landgericht Düsseldorf ein vorläufiges Verkaufsverbot für das Galaxy Tab 10.1 durchsetzen, welches seitdem in Deutschland von Samsung in einer speziell modifizierten N-Version angeboten wird. Düsseldorfer Gericht bestätigt Verkaufsverbot des Galaxy Tab
Wie Reuters berichtet, entschied Richter Wilhelm Berneke damit zugunsten Apples und sagte: “Samsung nutzt unrechtmäßig den Ruf und das Ansehen des iPad”. Weiter sagte er, dass Samsungs Tablet das iPad imitiere.
Als Begründung für die Entscheidung wird laut Florian Müller ein Verstoß gegen das Gesetz gegen den unlauteren Wettbewerb (UWG) genannt. Apple hatte im August 2011 vor dem Landgericht Düsseldorf eine Einstweilige Verfügung gegen das Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 erwirkt, welche vom Gericht im September bestätigt wurde. NFC: Apple könnte drahtloser Bezahlung zum Durchbruch verhelfen
Fast Company sprach mit Ed McLaughlin, der sich bei MasterCard um die Bemühungen des Unternehmens um “Aufkommende Bezahlungsmethoden” kümmert. Die Welt emanzipiere sich von der herkömmlichen Plastik-Scheck- oder Kreditkarte, auch viele Smartphones erlauben dank der Integration eines NFC-Chips die drahtlose und Geldbeutel-lose Bezahlung an der Supermarktkasse – auch mit MasterCards eigener PayPass-Technologie. iPhone-4S-Hype: Konkurrenz hält sich mit neuen Produkten zurück
Laut DigiTimes wollen sowohl Samsung als auch HTC, Nokia und LG ihre neuen Modelle erst im Frühjahr vorstellen – in der Hoffnung, dass bis dahin das Interesse am iPhone 4S etwas nachlässt. Der DigiTimes-Quelle zufolge, die über die Pläne der Hersteller informiert sein will, lasse ein Vergleich mit der Vergangenheit vermuten, dass die iPhone-4S-Nachfrage im aktuellen Quartal ihren Höhepunkt erreichen, dann aber zurückgehen werde.

Sky will launch an internet based TV service in the UK in the first half of 2012
UK pay TV service Sky has just announced its quarterly results, and despite adding 100,000 subscribers as well as notching its "highest ever first-half adjusted operating profit" it will launch a new internet TV service, available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. New Chinese carriers could add up to 40M iPhones in 2013
Apple will likely sign iPhone deals with both China Telecom and China Mobile "over the next year," adding up to 40 million more iPhone sales in 2013, argues Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. The iPhone is already available on China Unicom, but Huberty suggests that the carrier can only offer Apple 10 percent of a group of about 150 million "high-end Chinese subscribers," those being people who pay more than 100RMB ($16) per month. Megaupload-Daten könnten Donnerstag gelöscht werden
Die Daten des vor einigen Tagen geschlossenen File-Hosters Megaupload könnten schon in dieser Woche gelöscht werden. Foxconn stock hits record high on iPhone 5 rumors
Higher-than-expected sales of the iPhone 4S along with rumors of an all-metal body for the next iPhone has sent shares of Foxconn Technology Company to their highest level in more than five months on the Taipei stock exchange, BusinessWeek reports. Although the company makes nearly 50 percent of all the world's high-tech electronics, its fortunes are closely tied to the status of its best-known customer, Apple. The stock closed the day at NT$101.50 (approximately $3.44 US) a rise of about six percent.

Panasonic prices starter cameras from CES intro
Panasonic's Lumix line got one more update Tuesday night with pricing for the five point-and-shoots we saw at CES. The range-leading SZ1 and SZ7 cameras will cost $180 and $200 each. Both have 25-250mm equivalent lenses, with differences mostly revolving around 720p video in the SZ1 and going to 1080i in the SZ7.

Panasonic TS4, TS20 toughen up point-and-shoots
Panasonic's Lumix line got further upgrades Tuesday with two new rugged cameras. The TS4 is its new, toughest camera and can withstand water depths of up to 40 feet, drops of up to 6.6 feet, most dust, and temperatures down to 14F. Like some of the newest rugged cameras, it has an altimeter and a barometer log, although it now has the new GPS system of the ZS20 to load map data from a DVD for advanced geotagging.

Panasonic brings out ZS15, ZS20 compact superzooms
Panasonic used the lead-in to the CP+ show to introduce even more Lumix point-and-shoot cameras past what it showed earlier in the month. The 20X, 24-480mm ZS20 as the flagship hopes to cure some of the problems of compact superzooms with a new internal structure and nano surface-coated lens that hope to cut back on lens flares and ghosting. A new GPS system both handles the usual geotagging and can even load map data from a DVD like one would car navigation, filling in much more information for 82 countries, such as landmarks.

China Telecom wing: iPhone 4S due as soon as late February
China Telecom sub-label Beijing Telecom stated Tuesday local time that a China Telecom-native iPhone 4S was expected within about a month. AAPL closes at record high, now top-valued US company
Apple's stocked closed at $453.01 on Monday, a new all-time high for the company still seeing the effects of its record-setting last quarter reverberate on Wall Street. HTC may face resurrected patent dispute from IPCom in US
HTC saw a further setback in its attempts to survive patent conflicts on Monday after a US Court of Appeals in Washington ruled (PDF) that an earlier decision invalidating an IPCom patent in a lawsuit couldn't be upheld. The judge who had overseen the original case, where HTC had sued IPCom to negate its patent, would have to listen to arguments from IPCom as to why the patent was still valid. It would revive a lawsuit HTC had initiated in 2008 and thought it had resolved with its victory in 2010.

With iPads included, Apple becomes #1 computer vendor
Apple's extraordinary year-end results has catapulted it to the top position among PC vendors, according to a new report by industry analyst firm Canalys. The company shipped 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs in the calendar fourth quarter, representing 17 percent of all "client PCs" (meaning desktops, notebooks, netbooks and tablets combined) shipped globally during that period. Apple revamps AirPort Utility with iOS-style cues
Apple took a surprise step Monday by completely reworking its desktop AirPort app. AirPort Utility 6.0 (14.1MB) is reworked to look like its iOS counterpart and starts off with a visual topography for the user's network including the active status and whether or not updates are waiting. Freshly available in Software Update are AirPort Utility 5.6 and AirPort Utility 6.0. Microsoft begins Office 15 technical preview, fills up before you knew it existed
Everybody calm we know, we're excited too. We're just dying to see the latest in spreadsheet and presentation technology. But, for now, you'll just have to wait as the technical preview for Microsoft's next version of Office is all filled up. What exactly Redmond has in store for us it wont say but, it's not shying away from hyperbole, declaring it "the most ambitious undertaking yet for the Office Division." Primarily we assume that's because every arrow in the Office quiver is being updated simultaneously, including desktop, mobile and web apps, Visio, Lync and its countless other peripheral programs. Samsung says Super Bowl ad is just for Galaxy Note
Samsung in a series of Twitter updates unintentionally mitigated expectations for its Super Bowl ad. The company said that the spot was for the "revolutionary" Galaxy Note, which at 5.3 inches was so big that it needed an ad during the event to "do it justice." The spot will be one of the longest during the game, Samsung said, and will air during the last quarter.

New Flaming Lips song features Siri on vocals
Siri has been getting around lately. When she's not guest starring on popular sitcoms, she's apparently lending her vocal talents to the music scene. The Flaming Lips have produced an experimental song (embedded below) called "Now I Understand," which features both Siri and Erykah Badu as vocalists.
