Shocker: PS Vita downloads cheaper than boxed games
Digital copies of games that you download bypass the time-and-money-consuming manufacturing, logistics and retail processes. It's only natural that we as consumers expect some of that saving to be passed along to our own wallets. There's a fair chunk of evidence to suggest that downloading PS Vita games over PSN will result in a ten percent saving on the boxed edition (that you'd have to drive to a store for, and everything). Zuckerberg outlines idealistic Facebook mission in IPO filing
IPO filings aren't just a great way to raise money, they're also a perfect place for young CEOs and idealistic internet companies to grandstand and proclaim their altruistic motives. Facebook files for IPO with $5 billlion goal
Facebook on Wednesday uncovered its poorly-guarded secret and filed the S-1 form needed to make an initial public offering of stock, or IPO. The company is hoping to raise a steep $5 billion from the share offering, although Facebook isn't willing to commit to a valuation on how much the company is worth. It did confirm that it had 845 million total users, about 483 million of which sign in to the social network every day.

Qualcomm announces Q1 earnings: revenues up 40%, $1.4 billion in profit
The mobile revolution has been good to Qualcomm. Its Q4 2011 earnings were impressive enough, but the company is kicking off 2012 with even more staggering numbers. The Snapdragon creator pulled in $4.68 billion in revenue during Q1, a 40 percent increase over the same time last year and 14 percent higher than last quarter. Profits were also way up, hitting $1.4 billion, a 20 percent increase over last year and a whopping 33 percent higher sequentially. OS X Lion 10.7.3 released with Safari 5.1.3, Wi-Fi bug fix
The third update to OS X Lion, 10.7.3, has been released and is now available in Software Update. A list of some of 10.7.3's fixes are below. Of potentially greatest interest is the fix that purports to "resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep" -- I know both of my Macs have fallen prey to this bug several times under Lion, and it's been a fairly widespread issue. Hopefully this bug has indeed ben squashed once and for all. Apple spent $4.6 billion on tablet chip parts in 2011
By far, Apple sent the most amount of money in buying tablet chips during 2011, says research firm IHS iSuppli. The company is said to have dished out $4.6 billion, easily trumping Samsung's $603 million, and HTC's $199 million. A recent Gartner estimate put Apple's total semiconductor purchases at about $17 billion.

Apple posts Mac OS X 10.7.3 with new languages, RAW
Apple on Wednesday afternoon posted Mac OS X 10.7.3 (release notes). The Lion upgrade adds several languages, including Catalan for Spaniards as well as Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, and Ukrainian. RAW photo compatibility has expanded to several new cameras, including the Nikon J1 and V1, Olympus' current PEN cameras, and current Sony Alpha and NEX cameras, such as the NEX-5N.

MDLx experiments with leasing smartphones
Telecommunications consultancy group TMNG Global has just introduced a phone leasing option for carriers through Mobile Device Lease xChange (MDLx). This would allow carriers to avoid paying subsidies to device makers and instead lease smartphones. Western Digital shows off a Thunderbolt hard drive at Macworld | iWorld 2012
Hard drive storage company Western Digital was in attendance at Macworld | iWorld 2012 last week showing off its MyBook Thunderbolt Duo setup. The unit is a two-drive box that can hook up to your Mac through the Thunderbolt port, and it's Western Digital's first entry into the protocol. As you might imagine, using Thunderbolt means the transfers are much faster. Western Digital's rep said that while a transfer of 6 terabytes (the drive will likely debut in 4 or 6 TB models) would normally take up to 6 days to completely write over, the Thunderbolt drives can do it in six hours. That's big news for backup fans, who are very much awaiting WD's new models. The drive we saw was only a prototype model, and official pricing or release information hasn't yet been announced, unfortunately.

Leaked Nano a flawed, two-month old prototype, report says
The newly-leaked iPod nano images do indeed represent a camera-equipped prototype, but one about two months old, according to MIC Gadget. The site quotes "factory sources," who further describe the camera as using a 1.3 megapixel sensor, but with serious problems when it comes to image quality. In essence the unit produces overexposed images, with blurring and diffraction in bright conditions when the aperture is too small.

Sony Google TV gets update this week, brings speedier Chrome and 3D Blu-ray support

Keine Einstweilige Verfügung: Schlappe für Apple vor dem Landgericht München
Während Apple sich gestern noch in Düsseldorf durchsetzen konnte, gelang es ihnen, wie Bloomberg berichtet, vor dem Münchener Landgericht nicht.
Als Begründung für die Einstweilige Verfügung hatte Apple ein Touchscreen-Patent für Tablets und Smartphones genannt. Richter Andreas Müller lies dies jedoch nicht gelten, da Samsung gezeigt habe, dass das Patent sehr wahrscheinlich für ungültig erklärt werde, da die beschriebene Technik schon vor dem Patentantrag Verwendung fand.

Foxconn stock climbs on Apple projections

Seagate says drive shortages to last through 2012
Storage drive maker Seagate has updated its previous outlook on hard drive shortages due to the floods in Thailand. During its latest results call, it said shipments will be affected well into 2012, and the total shortage is to reach about 150 million units. Coldplay returns to Spotify, more streaming after standoff
Spotify scored a more symbolic win Wednesday after checks found that Coldplay had put its latest album, Mylo Xyloto, back on Spotify (link). The appearance, which includes other streaming services like We7, follows after the rock band kept its whole album off of streaming music services for fear of losing album purchases at iTunes and elsewhere. The decision was unusual as it came just weeks after the band's manager David Holmes had reiterated his objections to what he saw as lost revenue.

iPhone 5: Apple forciert NFC Integration
Mobiles Bezahlen ist auf dem Smartphone-Sektor ein ganz heißes Thema. Natürlich auch bei Apple, die für das iPhone 5 eine Integration an der NFC-Technologie arbeiten. Einsatzmöglichkeiten liegen laut Apple Insidern vor allem auch im iTunes Store.

PowerDVD 12 brings syncing and transcoding for mobile devices
It's been less than a year since CyberLink revealed PowerDVD 11 and now along comes PowerDVD 12. Among the new features in 12 is the ability to sync media -- we can only assume this excludes protected content -- to PowerDVD Mobile for Android as well as automatically transcode videos for most of the popular mobile devices. Apple contests iPad trademark rejection in China
Last December, a Chinese court rejected Apple's ownership of the iPad trademark in China in favor of Proview International, a large but relatively unknown Chinese monitor company. Now Apple is appealing that ruling, asking the courts to transfer the iPad trademark to it and also asking for Proview to pay 4 million yuan as compensation for legal fees that have accrued. Apple's original lawsuit against the company noted that a Proview subsidiary in Taiwan had sold the iPad trademark rights to "IP Applications," a UK-based company that later sold the trademark rights to Apple in 2010. Samsung has posted a teaser video (below) for its Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad that has already triggered some concerns about its success. The spot now appears to recycle scenes from the original ad of November, including the complaints about how the iPhone 4S looks too much like the old model and the "sketchy" battery life. Apple's new retail head, John Browett, was "the best by far" in terms of possible candidates, says company CEO Tim Cook. One blogger, Tony Hart, says he received a personal response from Cook after sending an email with his own thoughts on the hiring. Apple can't ban Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany
A Munich court on Wednesday denied Apple's motions to have preliminary bans imposed on the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. Judge Andreas Mueller sided with Samsung's view that it was 'more likely than not" the 2011-era Apple patent at stake would be revoked, leaving Samsung's devices in the clear. Purported iPad 3 code look shows new processor, world LTE
A code delve by an insider claiming to BGR to have access to an iPad 3 prototype may have supported some of the previously mentioned but not always corroborated rumors. Using what appears to be an internal Apple tool known as iBoot, the source showed a new S5L8945X processor that appeared to support quad-core references in iOS 5.1. The existing A4 and A5 processors are the S5L8930X and S5L8940X respectively, both of which will have been assembled by Samsung.

Tetsuya Yamamoto, Nikon's head of development was at CES talking up the future plans of the company's 1 system cameras after strong holiday sales. 383 Millionen verkaufte Tablets im Jahr 2017
Wie TechCrunch berichtet, sehen die Daten der NPD Group 383,3 Millionen verkaufte Tablets im Jahr 2017 voraus. Zum Vergleich: Weltweit wurden im Jahr 2011 352,8 Millionen PCs verkauft.
Das Interessante an den schon so beeindruckenden Zahlen ist aber auch, in welchen Ländern die Geräte verkauft werden. Der NPD zufolge sollen im Jahr 2017 weltweit 46 Prozent der Tablets in Schwellenländern verkauft werden. 2011 waren es bereits 36 Prozent.

Samsung has given a technology preview of how it will answer the third-generation iPad with the now more probable Galaxy Tab 11.6. The abstract demo shown to Phone Arena combined the extremely sharp 2560x1600 LCD with the upcoming 2GHz Exynos 5250 chip. Silkscreen: Design-Tool für App-Entwickler
Hat man die Mac-Applikation über WiFi mit dem iOS-Gegenstück gekoppelt, lassen sich Grafik-Dateien unkomprimiert entweder manuell per Drag-and-Drop oder automatisch auf das iDevice “beamen”.

Bisher musste ich mich entscheiden: Für Skype und FaceTime am Mac empfiehlt sich – trotz der relativ guten, integrierten Mikrofone heutiger Macs – ein separates Headset. Wer auf eine gute Sprachqualität nicht verzichten wollte, musste zwangsläufig zu einem USB-Headset beziehungsweise zu deren kabellosen Pendants greifen. Bluetooth-Modelle sind dagegen zwar flexibler in der Anwendung, bieten aber aufgrund der eingeschränkten Bluetooth-Profile nur Sprache in „Telefonqualität“. Crutchfield says this about his video short, One day I got an email, an sms, a phone call, a Facebook message and two tweets all within about 5 seconds of one another. Android tablets nowhere near iPad in web share as IE revives
Android tablets are gaining share of Internet use, but they still present no competition to the iPad online, NetApplications uncovered with its January wrap-up. The combined Samsung Galaxy Tab line had just 0.42 percent of mobile Internet share, while the Kindle Fire's possibly brisk sales still saw just 0.34 percent. Although down from December, the iPad at almost 24 percent was still in no danger from Android tablets, where even Android 3.2 was at 0.77 percent.

Apple shopping around for TV parts, analyst claims
Apple is in the middle of shopping around for parts for its TV, says Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster. The analyst says he recently spoke to sources within a "major TV component supplier," who told him that Apple had contacted the company "regarding various capabilities of their television display components." Its 4.2x (24-100mm) focal length may not deliver the big bad zoom of the P510, and it can't do RAW like the P7100, but it compensates with some serious optical features instead. Falls ihr bei Megaupload noch (legale) Daten habt, könnt ihr euch wahrscheinlich davon verabschieden. Nachdem das FBI seine Ermittlungen abgeschlossen haben wird, planen die Anbieter, bei denen Megaupload seine Server gemietet hatte nämlich, alle Dateien zu löschen. Seit dem 20. Januar sind alle Megaupload-Konten gesperrt, weswegen die Firma auch keine Rechnungen mehr bezahlen kann. Die Electronic Frontier Foundation hat deswegen jetzt zusammen mit Carpathia Hosting, einem der Serveranbieter, eine Webseite aufgesetzt, wo zumindest US-Bürger Ansprüche auf ihre legalen Daten geltend machen können. Samsung confirms: Galaxy S III will miss MWC
Samsung on Wednesday confirmed rumors that its flagship phone for the year, unofficially known as the Galaxy S III, will miss Mobile World Congress. Stopping a relatively brief tradition of launching its flagship smartphone at the Barcelona event, the company told TechRadar it would replace the Galaxy S II at a "separate Samsung-hosted event" closer to when the hardware would actually ship. Sharp struggles with TV competition, Q3 2011 results reveal 86 percent drop in profit
It's pretty tough out there for TV manufacturers. Sharp's reporting its financial results for April-December last year, announcing a profit of 9.14 billion yen ($120 million), a drop of 57.37 billion yen since the same period in 2010. Ein Monat Kindle: Wie liest es sich so?

Der Kindle ist ein Gerät, welches wie aus der Zeit gefallen wirkt. Mit dem langsamen Display und seinen zwei Funktionen (Bücher lesen und im Web browsen) wirkt es neben Alleskönnern wie dem iPad wie ein Greis. Dabei sorgt diese Limitierung für eine wunderbare Entschleunigung. Sicherlich kann ich auch auf dem iPad oder iPhone Kindle-Bücher lesen, aber dort gibt es immer noch Benachrichtigungen, Spiele, Musik, Podcasts und etliche anderen Dinge, die ich anstelle, zwischendurch oder parallel machen kann. Der Kindle kann dagegen kaum mehr als ein Buch sein oder, bei erreichbaren WLAN, ein Web-Browser, der in seinem absurd langsamen Bildaufbau an alte Mailboxzeiten erinnert. Das gefällt mir.

Laut Munster sprach Apple mit “wichtigen Fernseher-Komponenten-Herstellern” über die eigenen Pläne bezüglich eines HD-Fernsehers mit Internet-Anbindung. Apple habe sich über die Leistungsfähigkeit der jeweiligen Komponenten erkundigt. Diese Information sieht Munster als weiteren Beweis dafür, dass er in den letzten Jahren mit seiner Vorhersage richtig lag – und dass Apple vielleicht noch in diesem Jahr einen eigenen Fernseher veröffentlichen könnte.

Treemo Labs announces Appafolio app creation platform
Appafolio is a new app for the iPad and iPhone that enables users to create gallery-type portfolio apps in order to share photos, videos, artwork, catalog or product images or other presentations with other iOS users. Developer Treemo Labs has used the same tools found in Appafolio to develop apps for Beyoncé, The Roots and other clients. Megaupload's digital doors may have been closed due to the presence of pirated materials, but there's still the matter of all that legal content residing on its servers. Zite tablet magazine gains Intel sponsorship
Zite, the magazine-style feed aggregator for the iPad, iPhone and HP Touchpad has announced in a blog post that chipmaker Intel will be sponsoring the Technology section of the app, the second such sponsor the magazine has had. Two online campaigns against Apple factory worker abuse have been launched on Change.org and SumOfUs. Mark Shields started his Change.org campaign after listening to a radio program that discussed the claims of labor abuses at an Apple supplier factory in China. Biomask project could regrow burn victims' faces
We know it's cliche to say something sounds like science fiction, but this is seriously one of the more far out there concepts we've ever heard. Researchers from UT Arlington and Northwestern University are working with surgeons from the Brooke Army Medical Center on a project called Biomask. RIM's BlackBerry London has been refined in looks ahead of what could be an attempt to return to the US in force. An as yet unconfirmed rumor floating around Google suggests that the company's chief business officer and senior VP Nikesh Arora would take effective control of Motorola should its proposed takeover be approved. WTO rules China is violating trade laws with rare earth ban
The World Trade Organisation has now concluded its investigation of China's self-imposed rare earth export restrictions. The ruling has decided against China, and will push it to change policies. The panel ruled that China violated global trade laws by artificially restricting exports of ram materials such as bauxite, coke, magnesium, manganese, and zinc, thus cutting supply and unfairly giving its own companies an unfair advantage.

ITC tosses Barnes & Noble antitrust claims versus Microsoft
The International Trade Commission gave an initial ruling Tuesday that Barnes & Noble couldn't bring its antitrust claims against Microsoft. An Administrative Law Judge granted Microsoft's motion to dismiss the claims that it was abusing patents to try and squeeze Android out of the market. Details of the full ruling were still unpublished, but the Office of Unfair Import Investigations had already hinted that Barnes & Noble wasn't passing legal muster on issues such as licensing, which isn't compulsory for Microsoft.
