whited00r gives older iPhones iOS5 features
Apple devices age well, so well that there are still people using the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. When we think of those phones, we think "classic hardware with older software," but it doesn't have to be that way. For Apple fans with these now classic handsets, there's whited00r, a version of iOS that mimics some of the features of iOS 5. It's been around as a release candidate and finally made it to a stable release.
Whited00r is based on iOS 3.1.3 and has mods that let you experience folders, multi-tasking, iCloud-like functionality via Dropbox, reminders and more. Daily iPad App: Kingdom Rush
I first played Kingdom Rush as a Flash game online, and it's very good in that context as well. It's pretty straightforward tower defense, in that you face a series of invading monsters, and need to build up towers to defend against them. But Kingdom Rush outgrows its simple tower defense roots with a number of intriguing innovations. Instead of just building towers, some towers provide you with actual units to control, and you can set rally points for them and line up your attack a little more carefully than just placing and forgetting. Kingdom Rush also makes heavy use of spells to mix the action up, and there's such a solid balance between spells and towers that more often than not, it's your spells that win the day.

iBooks Author accounts are free, existing developers need a new account
Setting up an account to publish books to the iBookstore has always been free, and the new iBooks Author tool has brought that fact into the spotlight. Self-publishing books to the iBookstore does still have a few hurdles you have to leap through, however. As AppleInsider points out, for iOS and Mac developers in particular, one hurdle is that existing iTunes Connect accounts won't allow you to upload books to the iBookstore; instead, you'll need to set up a separate Apple ID associated with iBooks Author.

Google's Q4 net revenue totals $8.13 billion, Wall Street disappointed
Google just released its fourth-quarter 2011 results, and man, Wall Street is not pleased. The company reported earnings of $9.50 per share and revenue of $8.13 billion -- less than the $10.49 per share and $8.40 billion financial analysts were expecting. Of course, the company spun its results the best it could, emphasizing that it exceeded $10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time (it hit $10.58 billion, to be exact). Still, that figure doesn't reflect the myriad costs associated with growing its web traffic. Needless to say, investors aren't impressed -- as of this writing, the company's stock was down almost nine percent in after-hours trading.One thing you won't see reflected in those raw numbers: Android's still on quite the tear. Microsoft announces Q2 earnings: record $20.9 billion in revenue, $6.62 net income
Microsoft has just announced its second quarter earnings, and it's touting a record $20.89 billion in revenue, up five percent year-over-year. Net income came in at $6.62 billion, which isn't far off at all from the $6.63 billion it netted in the same quarter a year ago. Breaking things down, the company's Business Division saw a 3 percent increase in revenue to $6.28 billion, its Server & Tools business jumped 11 percent to $4.77 billion, its Windows and Windows Live Division dropped 6 percent to $4.74 billion, its Online Services business was up 10 percent to $784 million and, last but not least, its Entertainment & Devices Division jumped a full 15 percent to $4.24 billion.Developing

Intel reports record 2011 earnings, bests Q4 estimates
Intel just released its fiscal year-end numbers, including its Q4 report, and things are indeed looking up for the company. After revising its final quarter estimate late last December on the heels of supply chain reductions, the chipmaker posted $13.9 billion in revenues, beating its prior goal of $13.7 billion, but still falling well under its initial $14.7 billion target. iTunes 10.5.3: Update bringt Unterstützung für iBook 2.0-Sync

Federal prosecutors shut down Megaupload file-sharing site, founders charged
Details are still somewhat light at the moment, but reports are now coming out that the popular Megaupload file-sharing site has been shut down by Federal prosecutors in the US, and that the sites founders and other individuals have been charged with violating piracy laws. According to The New York Times, the indictment says that the company has cost copyright holders some $500 million in lost revenue, and that the site was at one time the 13th most popular on the internet. As the Times also notes, this news comes a day after Megaupload voluntarily blacked out its website to protest the SOPA and PIPA anti-piracy legislation now being considered by Congress. Today's education event was a reasonably small one, so far as Apple pressers go, held at the Guggenheim museum in New York City, with a smattering of media representatives in attendance. Microsoft, Alcatel-Lucent settle decade-old patent spat
It's no secret that Alcatel-Lucent and Microsoft have a long and somewhat litigious relationship, but today the two companies are letting bygones be bygones. Refurbished UK hotel features a Mac in every room
From the land of Shakespeare we have a remodeled hotel that has gone Mac in every room. The Menzies Welcombe Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon is now about as tech-friendly as a hotel can be, especially for a hotel built in 1866.
All guest rooms now contain a Mac, a flat screen TV, internet connections, Skype and Wi-Fi along with something called 'power showers'. There's even a helicopter landing pad. Shakespeare would be impressed.

My non-TUAW job is in print journalism, where I spend my nights as a designer for a newspaper in central Pennsylvania. Part of that work involves being able to estimate, from the glance at a photo in InDesign or a paper dummy, how much of a story I can fit on a page, photo dimensions and more.
The same goes for online design. Design veterans will tell you that knowing how big your elements are, aligning them, how they'll look on various screen sizes and other metrics isn't exactly easy. iBooks 2 lets authors set textbook prices in exchange for Apple exclusivity
Were you wondering about the economics behind Apple's new e-textbooks? Well, it turns out that Cupertino is giving authors the ability to set their own prices as long as they remain $14.99 or under. In exchange, Apple takes a 30 percent cut, and requires authors take an oath of fealty to Tim Cook -- ok, not really, but any e-textbook that wants access to the iPad-toting masses must be an exclusive to iBooks 2. „Fly With Me“ könnte das erste Spiel-Highlight im App Store im noch recht jungen neuen Jahr werden. Im Februar soll das Spiel zum Download erhältlich sein. Doch worum geht es?
Der Name lässt es schon erahnen: Bei „Fly With Me“ schlüpft der Spieler in die Rolle eines schnuckligen Vogels, der vor tropischer Kulisse durch die Gegend fliegt. Um den Piepmatz mittels Flügelschlag vorwärts zu bringen, muss man auf das Display tippen. Aber natürlich braucht der Vogel auch ein bisschen Nahrung, damit er ausreichend mit Energie versorgt ist. Als „Vogel-Treibstoff“ fungieren in diesem Fall Bienen und Hummeln, die während des Fluges verspeist werden.

Since going on sale last April, Samsung has moved some five million Galaxy S II units in its native South Korea. According to the company, that number means that roughly one in every four phone owners in the country now rocks the popular handset, enough for the company to unofficially declare it the nation's "national smartphone," a fact that's pretty tough to deny, given that South Korea's total population is somewhere in the ballpark of 49 million. As part of today's education announcement, you can pick up a preview of the biology textbook book E. O. Wilson's Life on Earth as a free download from the iTunes store. Requirements for this title are an iPad running iOS 5 and the latest iBooks version, the newly released iBooks 2. Parts of this textbook were demoed during the event this morning.

A facelift for iBooks wasn't the only change on Apple's agenda today, as the company's SVP has just announced an overhaul of iTunes U. The service, mostly used as a means of delivering lectures to college students, has seen over 700 million downloads since its launch and is now gearing up to offer full online courses from the likes of Duke University. Today is Apple's big education event and the company kicked off its announcements with iBooks 2, which will bring a new textbook experience to the iPad. As expected, these textbooks will include standard text interspersed with interactive high-quality images, videos, animations and 3-D models.
This content will be more than pretty; it will provide students with an immersive learning environment. Apple has announced the free iBooks Author, an OS X application for creating any type of ebook. As with Pages, a number of templates are available for authors to use to get started with making a book. With a tap, they can be filled with stock text. Elements such as audio and video can be dragged and dropped onto the page. Keynote slides and other widgets can be added as interactive elements, and glossaries can be created with the click of a mouse button. We're here at Apple's education-themed event at the Guggenheim museum in New York City, and Phil Schiller's just introduced iBooks Author, a free OS X program for producing books including -- yes -- educational texts. The real story here is ease of use, with the ability to drag and drop photos, videos and even Microsoft Word files into various templates. Apple launches iBooks 2 e-Textbook platform
We're here at Apple's education-flavored event at the Guggenheim museum in New York City. Phil Schiller has taken to the stage and announced that Apple's "reinventing the textbook" by launching iBooks 2. There are 1.5 million iPads currently in use in educational programs and 20,000 educational apps available for the platform, which prompted development of the new app. The new app resembles a book-stand where you can enter textbooks and paw through content, stopping to take a look at detailed 3D animated models of specific elements within. Use iConvert to scan documents directly to your iPad
I saw quite a few document scanners for iOS devices at CES last week, but this is about as elegant as they come. Brookstone is offering a scanner called iConvert, which uses your iPad as the receptable for anything you scan with it. Not only does it scan your documents with a 300 dpi scanner, but it even does a very nifty graphical representation of the document showing up on the screen.

IK Multimedia used the run-up to the NAMM show to unveil a pair of accessories targeted just at iOS users wanting to make professional music. Apple purchased a whopping 349 million micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) microphones last year to put in all of its various iOS devices, which means it is now the biggest purchaser of such microphones in the world. F-Secure: 'Several dozen' malware threats to Mac in 2011
The Mac platform saw a modest increase in malware outbreaks in 2011 over years past, but still "a small fraction" when compared to Windows, said security firm F-Secure. It added that while malware attacks were increasing, the rate of increase was not commensurate with the growth of the platform, suggesting that most exploits tend to come from programs rather than flaws in the OS itself. In all, the company identified 58 separate threats in 2011, most stemming from a handful of vulnerabilities.

Acer: 35% of our notebooks may be ultrabooks
Acer chairman JT Wang mentioned late Wednesday that as much as a third of of his company's entire notebook line may be ultrabooks. With Digitimes listening, Wang expected systems like the Aspire S5 and Timeline Ultra to account for 25 to 35 percent of all Acer's notebooks in 2012. Barclays: 'soft' US Mac growth to be offset by China sales
Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes is not prepared to lowered his estimate of year-end Mac growth down from 22 percent, despite recent data from research firm NPD that showed Macs growing at about half that rate in the US, reports Barron's columnist Tiernan Ray. Daily iPad App: AntiCrop extends the edges of your photos
There are plenty of photo cropping applications for iOS. Here's a new wrinkle that caught my eye. The app is called AntiCrop, and it's a US $0.99 universal iPad app that does the opposite of cropping a photo. It actually adds new data to the top and sides of an image, allowing you to reframe something that didn't come out right in the first place.
AntiCrop is kind of the reverse of Photoshop's content-aware fill. Content-aware fill allows you to take something out of a photo by blending in nearby pixels. Anti-crop works at the edges, and pretty accurately gives you new data that doesn't look especially fake or blended in after-the-fact.

PS Vita sales dip to 18K in Japan, cloud rivalry with phones

Apple's iPad still doesn't have any immediate threat from other tablets if web usage is an indicator, Chitika reckoned on Wednesday. AAPL hits all-time high, hits $429 ahead of earnings call
On the eve of its education-oriented PR event in New York City tomorrow and less than a week before its fiscal first-quarter earnings call with analysts, Apple stock closed at an all-time high of $429.11 at the end of trading on NASDAQ today. According to Patently Apple, Apple has been awarded a patent that it filed over five years ago related to sorting episodic TV content on the Apple TV. Steve Jobs himself is among the people credited with the patent, which on the surface merely appears to describe the sorting features already present in the Apple TV's interface.
